The Wimbledon Championships

Wimbledon is the world’s oldest tennis tournament and is also thought to be the @BFGCE8FG<:<BHF&<A68<G;4F588A;8?74GG;8??A:?4A7?H5<A*<@5?87BALondon. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (majors), the others being the French Open, the Australian Open and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only major still played on traditional grass, the game's original surface, which gave the game its original name of ‘lawn tennis’.

EventsThe five main events are the gentlemen's singles, ladies' singles, gentlemen's doubles, ladies' doubles and mixed doubles.

There are also four junior events and invitation events where some former professionals return to compete. In addition to this, there are wheelchair singles and doubles matches.

TicketsThe majority of centre court tickets are made available by a public ballot where applicants are selected at random by a computer. Fans without tickets can queue up overnight to get seats on match day.

ScheduleWimbledon takes place for two weeks in July. Usually, there is no play on the ‘Middle Sunday’, however bad weather has sometimes meant that matches are played on this day.

Trophies and Prize MoneyThe gentlemen's singles champion receives a silver gilt cup and the women’s singles champion wins a sterling silver salver which is decorated with figures from mythology. The prize money for the winners of the singles titles runs into the millions!

A Few Famous ChampionsSerena Williams, and her sister Venus, have won Wimbledon several times. They have even competed

against each other in the singles final.

In the Zone at home

Get In the Zone at home (or anywhere else!) with these simple activities about the body. See how you compare against your family or friends.

Brilliant balancing

How long can you balance for when standing on one leg? Practise balancing for as long as you FDQDQGÀQGRXWLI\RXLPSURYHwith practice. Make up your own balancing activity, e.g. standing on your toes or having your arms in the air, and investigate which lets you balance for the longest.

Quick off the block

Stick the reaction tester (overleaf) to a piece of card (or use a ruler if you have one) to test your reactions. Get a friend to hold the tester so zero is at the bottom and then let go – and see how far it falls before you can catch it. Are you faster with your right or left hand? Do you get better with practice?

Did you know?

The fastest-reacting muscles in your body are those involved in your eyes blinking. They allow you WREOLQNXSWRÀYHWLPHVDVHFRQG

Did you know?

There are receptors on the nerve endings in muscles, tendons, joints and the inner ear called proprioceptors, which tell you where you are in relation to the space around you. Many injured athletes use proprioceptor training in order to regain their sense of balance.

Did you know? The tallest man in history was an incredible 2.72 m.

Did you know? When we exercise, our hearts need to pump more blood to our cells to provide enough oxygen for respiration and to remove waste products. Sportspeople try to improve their heart muscles through exercise to gain a low resting heart rate and a quick recovery rate.

Did you know? The breath-holding world record is held by a Swiss free-diver who held his breath underwater for 19 minutes and 21 seconds!

Did you know? The largest muscle in your body is the gluteus maximus, one of three muscles that form your buttocks. It’s used in lots of activities including climbing stairs, running and cycling.

The Wimbledon Championships

Wimbledon is the world’s oldest tennis tournament and is thought by many to 58G;8@BFGCE8FG<:<BHF&<A68<G;4F588A;8?74GG;8??A:?4A7?H5in Wimbledon, London.

There are also four junior events including the boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles matches.

In addition to this, there are invitation events where some former professionals return to compete. Wheelchair singles and doubles matches also take place.

TicketsThe majority of centre court tickets are made

available by a public ballot where applicants are selected at random by a computer. Due to the popularity of the event, the public ballot has always been oversubscribed. Fans without tickets can queue up overnight to get seats on match day.

ScheduleWimbledon takes place for two weeks in July. Usually, there is no play on the ‘Middle Sunday’, however bad weather has sometimes forced play on this day. The middle Sunday is classed as a rest day for the players.

The Courts';8CE<A6<C4?6BHEG8AGE8BHEGJ4FBC8A87<AA4@BI<A:EBB9was added to this court which can be automatically closed.

The winners keep a smaller replica of their trophy.

The prize money for the winners runs into the millions!

A Few Famous ChampionsMartina Navratilova won a record nine Wimbledon singles titles. She often commentates on the women’s matches.

Serena Williams, and her sister Venus, have won Wimbledon several times. They have even competed against each other in the singles final. The sisters have also paired up and won the Wimbledon women’s doubles title on a number of occasions.
