Where is Wimax Today?

Wimax operators today are something between an ISP and a mobile operator, concerning the latter loosing ground to LTE.

Are they sitting between chairs or can they roam around?

How About Value Added Services?

If the WO (Wimax Operator) wants to become an ISP, he has no place in the Web2.0 value chain, except as a bit pipe.

If the WO wants to become a mobile operator, it’s missing traction, lacks terminals and the platform for launching Value Added Services as we know them from mobile operators. Do you hope for IMS? That is another expensive technology driven experiment without traction.

Conclusion

Mobile2.0 is a copy of Web2.0 with enhancements and mobility, but as of now leaves the operator out of the value chain.

Mobile VAS could be implemented on Wimax, but how and where is the business case?

Japan is the first and to date only country with Mobile2.0 services (imode, etc.)

Japanese mobile operators have become a bit pipe for data.

Revenue sharing models are 90/10 in the favor of service and content providers

Japanese operators make good money, but cannot grow.

Mobile2.0 requires ODPs for a good content and service presentation – mobile browsing will remain a pain for some time to come.

ODPs provide an application store with networking effect

The iphone gained 48% mobile Internet market share in 2008

Why ODPs?
