The total acreage in the North Annexation is 4,888 acres equivalent to 7.6 square miles. The “North Annexation” would bring the City up to 12,994 acres, or 20.3 square miles. In 2006 the entire City was 4,470 acres, or 6.98 square miles. The city’s service population is projected to increase at an annual rate of 3,100 people over the next four years and Williston is running out of land to accommodate the growth. “The Northern Annexation allows the City to provide comprehensive planning for subdivisions, utilities, parks and transportation”, say Klug. “Another reason we want this corridor is so we can have some control over the future plans for the highway, bypass major streets and intersections.” “If the area is annexed we hope that the property owners will become fully integrated into the city infrastructure and will receive services such as police and fire protection, water and sewer connections, garbage collection and snow removal,” says Klug. Williston City Auditor John Kautzman presumes that many of the 520 property owners would see reduced utility costs if they are annexed into the city. A public hearing regarding the Northern

If you’re reading this, the world did NOT end and all of the rumors we have been hearing about the Mayan Apocalypse well, didn’t come true.

For the last few years we have all been watching TV shows, listening to commercials, and reading news stories about how on December 21, 2012 the world was going to end. I’ve heard we were going to be saved by aliens, blown to bits by asteroids, and even the world was going to spin the other direction on its axis, throwing off all weather patterns. At 4:11 this morning, all of the planets were supposed to align, and that was going to trigger the end. Well, at 4:11 this morning I was snuggled up in my bed asleep, and when I woke up at 6, lo and behold the world was still there!

You know, if the Mayans had known the world was going to end, don’t you think they would have made a survival plan of some kind? If I knew my world was coming to an end I would sure as heck make every effort to survive.

So now that we’ve established that we’ll all be around for a while longer, let’s talk about making the most of every day. I know, I know, it’s cheesy. But come on. Why wouldn’t you want to live life to the fullest so that on the day that the world does decide to implode, you’ll know that you lived your life with no regrets, and you’ll be ready to go out with a bang. (No pun intended)

So. Go on an adventure. Go kind of crazy. Yes, there are limits. Every day, do one thing that’s just for you, even if it’s going for a run or locking yourself in your room to catch up on a TV show. Everyone needs a little time to themselves.

And other days, go out with a group of friends and have a blast. Drink within your limit, laugh your butt off, and do

whatever you do as a group. As much as anyone needs alone time, hanging out with your best friends makes the day totally worth it.

What have we learned? Well, the Mayans didn’t get their calendars together, you need time to yourself and with a group of friends, and, well, everyday needs to have something new. Who knows when the next apocalypse will happen.

As they say in the movie UP, “Adventure is out there!” Go find it.

How many of you thought the world was going to end? Send me your apocalypse preparations and I’ll put them up next week!

Cheers to another year!

Courtney

The new year is widely accepted as a time to start fresh, and every year people make resolutions to better themselves. For many, this means vowing to make lifestyle changes to improve how they look and feel. However, sticking to restrictive diets and intense workout programs can be difficult and not sustainable for most people. Before you get hooked by the annual flood of diet tips and gym promotions, focus on a few key areas to commit to a healthier lifestyle for 2013.

Consume whole foods Adding more whole foods into your everyday diet is a natural way to obtain the nutrients your body craves without feeling like you’re making a drastic change. One of the easiest ways to do this is by incorporating fresh juices into your daily routine. Whole-food juicing is a quick and easy way to get several servings of fruits and vegetables at once. Simply toss whole fruits, vegetables, or a combination of both into a high-performance blender and then add ice. In seconds, you’ll have a delicious, nutrient-packed beverage, plus the fiber from the whole foods to keep you full longer.

Add more exercise Incorporating exercise into a daily routine is important and can have many health benefits. To begin living a more active lifestyle, experts recommend starting slowly and building up length and intensity of physical activity. You don’t need to spend hours at the gym to reap the benefits of exercise; use the stairs, go for a walk, take a bike ride, or play with your dog

or children to get moving and start looking and feeling better.

Rest up Although jam-packed schedules make it seem like there aren’t enough hours in the day, it’s extremely important to set aside enough time to rest and recharge. Getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night allows for optimal mental and physical performance, and making sleep a priority can have significant impact on overall well-being. To enjoy the many benefits adequate sleep offers, adopt a bedtime routine at the same time each night. Avoid food and drink for 30 minutes prior to going to sleep and stay away from computers, televisions and other screens. Instead, enjoy a relaxing activity, such as reading or meditating, to help you fall asleep.

De-stress daily Stress can cause many mental, emotional and physical health issues, and long

periods of high stress can have debilitating effects. To avoid lasting health problems, learn to recognize stress and how to deal with it effectively. Despite your busy schedule, making time for yourself each day is important and can help you avoid severe stress problems. Whether it is taking a walk, playing an instrument, practicing yoga or even calling an old friend, do something you enjoy every day.

With a few adjustments to your daily activities, you can look forward to a happy, healthy new year and beyond.

North Dakota leads the nation in personal income growth according to statistics released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The report shows North Dakota personal income growth increased by 1.4 percent during the third quarter of 2012.

The report shows growth in North Dakota was tied to farm income, wholesale trade, mining and additional business activities.

“We are very pleased and proud that North Dakota continues to lead the nation in personal income growth,” Commerce Commissioner Alan Anderson says. “That’s the proof our policies for economic growth are working.”

Nationally, state personal income growth slowed to 0.5 percent during that same

time frame. Growth slowed in 34 states, accelerated in 11, and was unchanged in 5.

As defined by the BEA, personal income is the income received by all persons from all sources. Personal income is the sum of net earnings by place of residence, property income and personal current transfer receipts. www.commerce.nd.gov

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20)It will be hard to pin you down this week. Your many interests could keep you busy. Your independence is very important to you, and with it comes a desire for adventure and a chance to go to places you’ve never been. Others seem attracted by your high spirits and fun approach to life. Your career zone moves into focus later in the week, so you might be busy hatching a few plans or working out a strategy to achieve an important goal.TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21)Rework a financial plan and focus on one important area where you want to make progress. You might be willing to take a risk or gamble. There’s even a chance of a small windfall or an opportunity to close a lucrative deal. Listen to your intuition for the best results. Conflicts could cause trouble in romance. Do your best to deal with difficult or restless personalities. An upbeat outlook helps you keep your cool and come out smiling.GEMINI (May 22-June 21)Perhaps you can be of help at a time when a friend’s plight, money concerns, or work issues bring anxiety. Schedule a chat, dinner, or party for a chance to talk things over and cheer up your pal. Relationships seem to be positive and upbeat with plenty of opportunities for fun events and good times this week. The focus later shifts to shared resources. The cosmos may be encouraging you to pay off credit cards and sort out debts.CANCER (June 22-July 22)A health issue might require attention. Because of the positive energy around your health sector, you should be able to sort this out in no time. Listen to the advice of your health professional and read about alternative ideas and other possible treatments. Being proactive about your health is a positive move this week. Make an effort to plan an exercise routine and diet that will give you a boost that lasts through the holiday season.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22)If you feel generous, treat someone special to a good lunch. You’ll both be on the same page and enjoy each other’s company immensely. Romance is in the air. Over this holiday week you seem set to enjoy a lighthearted relationship - or perhaps more than one. You could be involved in organizing events, office parties, and get-togethers, something you love to do. You’ll also be busy at work, so pace yourself and perhaps get a relaxing massage.VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)You’ll enjoy the positive, upbeat focus on your home zone over this holiday week, especially as you’re guaranteed to have plenty of fun. Your place seems to be a social center for friends and family to drop by for a drink and chat. You may even decide to host your work party at your place or invite colleagues over to relax and chill. There’s also a focus on your romance zone, with the potential for one relationship to become intense and passionate.LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23)Friends and family may appreciate you getting in touch over this festive week. The focus is on communication, and it seems you have a lot to say, most of which is positive, upbeat, and often amusing. Being willing to send out invitations and get everyone together will kick-start the celebrations. It looks like you’re going to be doing a lot of organizing at home for other family members. Try to delegate some of the work so you can relax, too.SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)Unless you overindulge or jeopardize your health, this should be a fairly smooth-sailing week. A focus on your money zone suggests you’re in a very generous mood and might decide to splurge on friends and family. Your warm-hearted gesture will be repaid many times over. You may need to kick-start your social life, perhaps by inviting friends over for a get-together or party. It’s important that you get out and mingle.

SAGITTARIUS(Nov.23-Dec. 21)You might want to guard against all forms of excess this week. It might be too easy to go over the top in just about everything, especially promises. Despite this, you seem to be the life and soul of the party and the one everyone wants to be around. Your relationship outlook is very positive. Success is assured concerning efforts to further ties with loved ones. A down-to-earth attitude about employment and physical health is important.CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20)Although there’s an emphasis on your social life, a desire to spend some time alone reflecting on your priorities may win out. You might also approach this holiday week with a desire to help others make their lives easier and more fun. Rather than attending parties, you might want to get involved in charitable efforts and spend your time making a difference. The focus then shifts to your sign to encourage you to rethink your image and perhaps get a makeover.AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19)Socially, you seem to be having the time of your life over this holiday week. There are opportunities to attend plenty of parties, get-togethers, and other celebrations at this time of year. A romantic relationship may blossom this week. You and your latest love interest could go out together a lot more and discover how much you enjoy each other’s company. At the same time, you may be eager to reflect on your priorities and goals for 2013.PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20)Your career seems to be going great guns this week, with plenty of opportunities to get ahead. You may be offered a special deal, perhaps a promotion or an opportunity to renew a valuable contract. It’s also a good time to invite colleagues and professional friends back to your place for some festive fare and fun. They’ll appreciate it, and it could be mutually beneficial. Home and family affairs seem to be happy and fulfilling this week. Your social life is buzzing, too.

This Week in HistoryOn December 28, 1895, the world’s first commercial movie screening takes place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film was made by Louis and Auguste Lumiere, two French brothers who developed a camera-projector called the Cinematographe. The Lumiere brothers unveiled their invention to the public in March 1895 with a brief film showing workers leaving the Lumiere factory and charged admission for the first time. In America, the film industry quickly took off. In 1896, Vitascope Hall, believed to be the first theater in the U.S. devoted to showing movies, opened in New Orleans. In 1909, The New York Times published its first film review (of D.W. Griffith’s “Pippa Passes”), in 1911 the first Hollywood film studio opened and in 1914, Charlie Chaplin made his big-screen debut.
