Introduction from theHead of Senior School

Welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to our new Senior School.

Rugby School Thailand opened its doors to Pre-Prep and Prep pupils in September 2017. Our Senior School will open in September, 2018.

Rugby School Thailand is unique in South East Asia. Sharing its DNA with our parent school, Rugby School, we will be a full-time boarding school. The values, traditions and heritage of our parent school will influence all that we do, every day.

‘The whole person, the whole point’ is more than a tagline. It is a philosophy that undergirds what we seek to achieve at Rugby School Thailand. We have high expectations for all that our pupils do. Drawing on Rugby School’s 450 year history, we seek to mirror Rugby’s success at our site in Chonburi. As our parent school’s prospectus states: ‘All facets of life – academic and artistic, spiritual and sporting – form part of an indivisible whole. The whole person, in fact.’ Nurturing this holistic education shapes our mission at Rugby School Thailand.

Learning at Rugby School Thailand will be typified by the restlessness, reflection and rigour demanded at Rugby School in the UK. We want our pupils to exhibit a restlessness for learning that will extend them intellectually. As learners, we want them to be reflective, and always ready to be self-critical, searching for a deeper truth. Our learning environment will demand confidence and agility that sees our pupils looking through the glass, not gazing upon it.

‘The whole person, the whole point’ is more than a tagline. It is a philosophy that undergirds what we seek to achieve at Rugby School Thailand

We will set very high academic standards. Our curriculum will be broad, offering GSCE and IGCSE courses in Years 10 and 11, and A-Levels in Years 12 and 13. Our teachers will be drawn from around the world. They will be outstanding educators, with proven records of achievement as teachers and scholars. They will have an enthusiasm for teaching in an international setting, and a commitment to making Rugby School Thailand a truly great world school.

Our expansive site offers the very best facilities to our pupils and staff. Boarding is at the core of our School, so our long days that resemble those in Warwickshire are intended to maximise the learning and development of our pupils. Pupils at Rugby School Thailand will learn in a close, but extended community.

A Rugby School Thailand education offers something unique. As a boarding school in the British tradition, our enhanced daily offering including sport, music and other co-curricular activities will complement our rigorous academic programme. Our boarding community will enjoy state of the art facilities, and provide a safe home for our pupils. Very deliberately, we will educate the whole person.

I would welcome the opportunity to meet you in person, and show you around Rugby School Thailand.

Learning and TeachingWe have already engaged outstanding teachers in our Pre-Prep and Prep schools. Drawn from some of the UK’s most renowned schools, each has a passion for their subject area and a determination to nurture learning and critical thinking in our pupils.

We will assemble a team of specialist teachers in the Senior School from around the world. They will be recognised as remarkable educators.

Learning and teaching in the Senior School will focus on academic excellence as one pillar of a great education. It will foster critical thought and resilience in our young men and women that will equip them to brook the challenges that await them after school.

Our teaching team will be led by the Deputy Head – Academic whose focus will be to demand innovation, reflective practice, collaboration, and rigour from staff and pupils. We want to develop an adept community of learners - global citizens whose restless desire for deeper understanding will ensure their success in life.

Senior School CurriculumWe have adopted the nomenclature of Rugby School UK, so our Senior School year groups are known as F Block (Year 9), E Block (Year 10), D Block (Year 11), Lower XX (Year 12), and XX (Year 13)

Pupils will have the opportunity to find and develop their academic passions.

The F Block (Year 9) curriculum is designed to engage our pupils in a broad and rigorous academic experience, offering intellectually challenging and demanding material in all of their subjects. Pupils will have the opportunity to find and develop their academic passions. We want them to begin the process of developing the dispositions necessary for them to become empowered and autonomous. Our goal is that these will include a persistently reflective habit, the disposition to think creatively and critically, as well as resilience and resourcefulness in the face of challenge and failure.

All pupils in F Block (Year 9) study English, Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), History, Geography, Philosophy, Art, Design and Technology, Drama and PSHE. Additionally, they will have a weekly tutor period. They must choose a Modern Foreign Language: Spanish, French, or Chinese. They must also choose a further two options. In the E and D Blocks (Years 10 and 11), pupils study a core curriculum of English, Science (Triple Award), at least one Modern Foreign Language, either History or Geography, and two other elective subjects.

In the Sixth Form (known as Lower XX and XX), pupils will typically choose four subjects to study at A-Level.

Rugby School Thailand has high expectations of its teachers and pupils. We aim for outstanding academic results, and our enrichment programmes that complement our classroom lessons prepare our pupils for their external examinations, and for university studies.

Pastoral CareRugby School Thailand is a full-time boarding school. As such, our Houses in the Prep and Senior schools are the foundation on which our pastoral care program is built. Heads of Houses will guide and assist pupils through their journey through the School. The relationships between pupils and House staff will be close and enduring. Pupils will live in secure, spacious, comfortable boarding houses. Boarding staff will build relationships with families in a partnership focused on the growth of our pupils.

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will devise and constantly update our pastoral care policies and procedures aimed at pupil safety and welfare. Our Pastoral Care programme is designed to build resilience in our pupils, and for them to realise the importance of their own wellbeing and that of others.

Small dormitories of 6 pupils in a room will be in place for Years 3 and 4 boarders; 4 pupils in a room in Years 5 to 9; double rooms in Years 10 and 11; and single en-suite rooms in Years 12 and 13.

Separate dining halls will serve Pre-Prep / Prep pupils and Senior school pupils. Each boarding house will have a Head of House, tutors, and a matron to care for our boarding pupils.

Rugby School Thailand will adopt a Community Action programme akin to that which runs at Rugby School UK. Educating our pupils to use their social, cultural and economic capital for the benefit of others aligns with our commitment to educating the whole person.

Pupils will be given a range of choices of activities to join that will see them actively engaged in both the School and wider communities. Service learning projects underpinned by philanthropy and community service will be devised by the Assistant Head - Co-Curricular. Community Action will occur once each week, and all pupils will be expected to be involved.

Recurrent projects, local outreach, and potential trips abroad will be within the fabric of the Community Action programme.

Co-Curricular Programme

Blessed with magnificent facilities, pupils will be able to participate in a wide array of activities. Our sporting facilities are superb. A significant number of sports will be on offer for pupils, both in teams and as individuals. Few schools can boast the facilities that will be on offer at Rugby School Thailand.

Regular competitions with other schools in Thailand and with schools throughout South East Asia will enrich our internal games programme. Rugby School Thailand will become a host for regular international competitions.

Complementing our sporting programme are our performing arts, including Drama and Music. Expansive facilities provide the arenas in which our pupils can excel. We place a great deal of importance on the learning that happens outside of the classroom, and resource our Co-Curricular programme accordingly.

Other activities such as overseas study and sports tours will add to the breadth of our Co-Curricular programme.

Facilities and Location

With no time lost commuting, our pupils enjoy an expansive programme of classes and activities each day.

Rugby School Thailand sits on 80 acres in Chonburi, about 160km southeast of Bangkok. The city of Pattaya is about a 30 minute drive from the school. Bangkok’s main international airport at Suvarnabhumi is a 70 minute drive north of the school. Pattaya airport at U-Tapao is a 30 minute drive south.

Set in verdant countryside, with an outlook over the Gulf of Thailand, the School is far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. With no time lost commuting, our pupils enjoy an expansive programme of classes and activities each day.

No other school in Thailand has a campus to compare with Rugby School Thailand’s. Four swimming pools; football pitches; basketball courts; tennis courts; two indoor sports centres; a 300m long lake for kayaking and rowing; a golf driving range; and bike and running tracks cater for our sports programme.

Purpose-built classroom blocks; a Music and Drama auditorium; Art and Design centre and gallery; Science centre; Sixth Form centre, and a Learning centre provide an unrivalled learning environment.

Prep and Senior boarding houses complete our campus facilities to provide a secure, comfortable environment for study and relaxation.

Admissions PolicyRugby School Thailand is a selective school. The selection process, though different for each age group, will focus upon assessing three ‘key areas’:

1. Academic ability and potential 2. Talents and potential in other fields, such as sport, music, drama and art 3. Qualities of character.

Whilst a minimum academic standard and a minimum level in English will have to be met by all Prep and Senior School pupils, strengths in any one of the three key areas may lead to the offer of a place.

Our International MixOur aim is to be, from the outset, a truly global school. At the same time, we want to ensure the integrity of Thai culture and customs. Therefore, the mix at which we are aiming is 40% Thai children and 60% other nationalities. By building our school in this fashion, all will benefit from cultural diversity. The school curriculum will be conducted in English, with English as an additional language (EAL) support, if required.
