I was unable to get to either of their final rideouts, but many of you were able to share theselast rides showing how family respect theirdear friends.

We are privileged to have Paula ‘Bunface’write for us about Lockies life celebration day.

Paula writes for ‘Triker’, the USA BTW bi-monthly newsletter publication which goes outworldwide to all members of the BTW family.Letting everyone know what the eachindividual chapter is up to in their corner of theglobe.

At the start of this year everyone I met remarkedupon the shocking amount of sad news thatseemed to bombard us all. At first it was just inthe media, but then the losses came so muchcloser to home. Still reeling from the news thatHoss had passed away, the fact that Lockie hadgone too was just too much. Again, tributespoured out on social media for another loved andlamented friend.

Whilst battling through the gloom, we were allforced to remember what an amazing characterLockie had been. He barely had to know youbefore he had touched your life in ways thatmade him unforgettable.Although there was a bitter chill in the air, thesun shone brightly for Lockie as he went on hislast ride. People crammed the little country pubin preparation for Lockie’s memorial. Old friendsand new acquaintances chatted, swapping stories

about the loveable rogue, and that was just as hewould have wanted it.

At 2 o’clock we all gathered in the picturesquegarden of the Phoenix pub. The mood was amixture of sombre grief intertwined with warmnostalgia as we braced ourselves for our finalfarewell. Warm words and amusing anecdoteswere spoken and we all laughed as we offered upour finest onefinger salute. But still, as the music played, itwas impossible for some to hold back the tears.

It is at this point that, I like to think, Lockie tookover the proceedings. A lone bugler played TheLast Post as we stood in silent reflection. In thedistance a dog howled loudly. The bugler playedon as an eruption of unexpected laughter came inresponse to the dog’s protest. In life Lockie hadalways been so capable of contemplating thegritty side of life but he would always find a wayto cut through the gloom. To me, Lockie alwaysmade a sometimes cruel world feel warm andbright again. I choose to think that the dog wasLockie’s reminder to us that our tears andsadness would have been just as devastating tohim as they were to us; life is short so laughwhile you can.

Lockie’s ashes now reside in that pub garden, overlooked by the stunning views and wonderfulpeople that he had fallen in love with. He nowresides in the shade of a tree with a memorialbench to mark where he was laid to rest.

TALES FROM AREA NINE A slight mishap to kick the year off

The date, 19th January 2016. The time, 16.45. Theplace, My front room.I had just sat down to eat my tea which consisted offish, chips and mushy peas when I remembered I hadleft the beer in the fridge. A nice cold bottle of Spitfire. So up I got and the next second I was sailing throughthe air like a helicopter in distress, arms and legs allover the place. I landed in an undignified heap upagainst the bookcase.

The cat, which a second earlier had been asleep in frontof the fire, twitching as she dreamt of chasingsomething edible, shot about six feet in the air andlanded on my face in a frenzy of spitting, hissing andflailing claws which knocked my glasses off, althoughat the time I didn’t notice. An excruciating pain shotthrough my left arm which resulted in the ‘silent’scream. The sort of scream where it’s so painful that nosound actually comes out. ‘Bless me that smarts’ I thought to myself. I thenrealized that I couldn’t actually bend my arm. Isomehow managed to get to my feet and trod straighton the glasses the cat had so rudely removed secondsearlier. Great! I’d gone from content to agony, one-armed and blind all in the space of about 15 seconds.. Imanaged to wriggle out of my fleece jacket to look atmy arm. ‘Nope, that doesn’t look right at all’ I thought.

A huge lump had appeared on the outside of my elbow.Later I found out that lump was my Ulna. It had poppedright out of place and had settled itself alongside thejoint of the humorous. The radius, not to be outdone, decided it would like to see the view from where theUlna had been. So it had jumped into the space that theUlna had vacated. It was the absolute epitome of pain. Ihave never felt anything like it. One horrible thoughtran through my

mind. ‘Well that isthe end of riding the trike for a while’.As so it was to prove. Being the eternalpessimist I even let the question ‘will I ever be able to ride my tricycle again?’ slip into myhead a couple of times.

Anyway off I went to hospital courtesy of Phil, a verykind neighbour. X-rays done then transferred to anotherhospital 20 miles away in Ashford courtesy of the samevery kind neighbour. This was due to the fact thatCanterbury hospital no longer had an orthopaedics deptdue to the cuts in NHS funding. Utter madness. Everybump and pothole on the way to Ashford shot throughmy arm like an electric shock. When we got there they put me on a table and triedgassing me. Didn’t work. Then they pumped gallons ofMorphine into me. Didn’t work. So they triedsomething stronger which I cannot remember the nameof. That worked. Two burley doctors and a femalenurse were heaving and tugging at my arm trying to getthe joints back in. I have absolutely no recollection ofthis at all but apparently I was still semi-conscious andmy language did take on a bit of an industrial hue. My‘very kind’ neighbour was a very amused spectator andtold me about all this a few days later. He also told methat he wished he had videoed it.

No matter what they tried the joint wouldn’t go back inso it meant an operation the next morning. So the following day at 09.30 they wheeled me down tothe anaesthetic room. While they were pumping drugsinto me I was laying there thinking ‘this stuff isn’tworking’. Ten seconds later I was waking up back onthe ward with my left arm in plaster and the job alldone. Weird!

Page 6: The Whole Newsletter March April 2016 - BTW-UK · The date, 19th January 2016. The time, 16.45. The place, My front room. I had just sat down to eat my tea which consisted of fish,

I had to keep the plaster on for twelve days. There was tobe no riding my trike for a fortnight and I had to push theArea 9 meeting back a week. We’ve got a great littlegroup down here and no one seemed to mind. Well ifthey did they didn’t say anything.

Not being able to ride or even drive was torture. I live ina village with no shops, no pub and very few buses. Itwas utterly unbearable. The days dragged by buteventually the 1st of February came round and off to thehospital we went, this time courtesy of Sylvia, my verykind mum. The plaster was removed to reveal a five inchlong scar running right round the side of my elbow. Ididn’t expect that. Then another x-ray followed by a visitto the consultant. He showed me the X-ray to explainwhat they’d had to do.STREWTH!! Metal work. It revealed a dirty great bigscrew in my elbow holding stuff together. Anothersurprise.Anyway. I’ve got to go back in six weeks to see how itsmending but meanwhile there was still only one questionstill in my mind. ‘Can I ride the trike?’The next morning I togged up and uncovered Black Bess. There she was, waiting patiently. She hadn’t been startedup for a fortnight but her motor burst into life first turn ofthe key.The moment of truth had arrived. My worry was that Iwouldn’t be able to straighten my arm enough to reachthe gear stick. Maybe I should have gone for a Rewacoafter all. I reached down…’yesssss I can reach it’. Intofirst gear, gently does it, ‘ouch that hurt’, so even moregently does it. I needn’t really have worried. Although abit painful I managed it without too much trouble. Thankgawd fer that!

I am back on the road and it feels absolutely bloodyfabulous. And to think this all happened because I forgotmy bottle of beer.Don’t let anyone tell you that drinking is harmless.

Area 9Things continue to develop nicely down here in theglorious South East. We have now had flyers printedready for the new season and it’s great that a few RCshave requested the artwork to get some done for theirareas. We’ll soon be thinking about buying our gazeboand banners so we can do a stand at local events and as Iwrite this one of our members, Claire Carter isconstructing our Area 9 website. Details will be postedon Facebook as soon as we go live. Although by the timethis newsletter comes out I am guessing we’ll already belive and you’ll already know all about it. It’s going to bea good looking site. Come say hello.

We have another little event on the 13th March. TheWhitstable Egg run. Hopefully there will as good aturnout as there was for the Toy Run back in December.

Our Area 9 meetings are still always well attended and agood time is had by all.

We also have a nice shiny new trike among out ranks.Gordon PX’d his trusty old Red WK for a beautiful silverboom low-rider. And despite the best efforts of theDVLA he is now on the road. While we’re on the subjectof the DVLA methinks its time for a bit of a mini rant. The time they took getting things sorted got beyondridiculous. They refused to accept the certificate ofconformity because it was in German. They sent it back to Kevin the seller, who at this timewas still the registered owner and requested he get a newone from Germany but in English. So Kevin had to sendthe document back to Germany so that the Germanscould translate it to English. The Germans then sent itback to Kevin who then had to return it to the DVLA.Now isn’t the DVLA supposed to be a high-techgovernment service? Are they really incapable of gettinga document translated from German to English? So thisdelayed things for another two weeks. They just draggedtheir heels at every single stage. Then, to put the icing onthe cake they asked the question to end all questions withregard to trikes. Is it right-hand drive or left-hand drive?

Unbelievable. Getting things sorted actually took nearlytwo months. Surely they can do better than that….can’tthey? Rant over.Anyway every cloud has a silver Boom lining andGordon is now a very happy chap. And who wouldn’tbe?

Gordon taking delivery of his new trike from Kevin Kilduff of thetriketrader.com

Whilst on the subject of Gordon’s trike I have to put in agood word for Kevin of thetriketrader.com. He reallypestered the hell out of the DVLA and really went thatextra mile to make sure Gordon was happy witheverything. And he’s a really nice and helpful chap. Ifyou’re looking for a new trike then give him a call. If hehasn’t got it what you’re looking for he will doeverything he can to find it for you.Not much else to report apart from it’s bloody cold. Thisis the time of year when I always think seriously aboutgetting myself a car. Never seems to happen though. ButI think its going to happen sometime before next winter.Yes I know what you Northern tough nuts are thinking.‘What a Southern softy’. Thats all folks.. Sean Jordan-Wilson

-Proposals –

1. Propose that the AGM be combined with the annual member’s only rally.

Proposed by Bob Seconded by Nigel Till

2. propose 'LARC DAY'. I suggest that BTW-UK pick a day on the which is set aside for givingthanks to our road captains. Each area can celebrate in any way they fancy. Maybe a

USEFUL INFORMATION FOR YOUR JOURNEY

From Area 8 a belated Happy and Safe NewYear!

At our first meeting of 2016 I was voted in asSecretary!!No other contenders soooo I amperforming my second duty ( first to take minutesat the meeting)to fill in everyone with our ‘antics’in 2015 from what I and we can remember!!We definitely went to Nabd Rally in Chelford itsonly 20 mins down the road for us so very local.Main memories are Smallest tent on site taken byNick. Took this circle off the back of trike andthrew it on the ground, It was sort of dog kennelsize. His partner Jo, who said she had a real tentthey could have brought, was not impressed. Notonly was the tent tiny but he had only broughtsleeping bags to sleep on! No sleeping mats, airbed or extra ground sheet! How we laughed butpoor Jo could hardly walk the next day due to hersore back…..?

Continuing with the Nabd rally excitement –How many BTW trikers does it take to erect Ianand Aileen’s awning to their old trailer tent?Think I counted 7 we were all falling aboutlaughing and that was before we had had a drink.Oh I think Sandy had opened the first can! GreatRally, lots of laughs.

Dusty, Sandy, Darrol plus family, Yaya and Adgewent to AGM in Hull. Very interesting. There was a ‘blow the cobwebs’ off ride out ledby Dusty and Sandy to Holmfirth. Where theyfound a Café, Bar, Pub for the traditional FullEnglish! And just when everyone thought theyhad arrived home safely…No not Dusty runningout of petrol AGAIN but Glyn and Sally’s trike

Throwing off its fan belt and cover.. LuckilyAileen had a spare pair of tights (don’t ask) tomake a ‘make shift’ one - so all was well in theend.

Four of us went up to the ‘Farmyard Rally’Weather was very good to us this year. Love thearea went on a local bus ride from Helmsley toPickering and then on the train, Yorkshire DalesRailway, to Whitby with chips and fish at aharbour café!! Great beer, food and music butmost of all Holy Joe’s for countless cups of teaand the late night hot chocolate!! Oh after thebeer of course…

PlusArea 8 had bought a Coleman Gazebo with sidesso that we could all sit in!! For rent for anyoneinterested in borrowing - it towards area eightfund..only joking. It was a great success andmeant that we could get together at any timeduring the weekend. Great show of trikes difficultto decide which ones to vote for but as always thebest ones won the prizes.

you’?? P.S Ian’s 50’s outfit was Fab U Los!! Seepiccies!! All got home in one piece JUST.Blackpool Bike show ride out was a day toremember! On the pics its lovely and sunny, gotthere without any probs. Some ate at the café in thepark others wanted to go into Blackpoo centre toeat. So off we set Couldn’t find anywhere to parkthat was reasonable!! Tight asses! The sky wasgrowing dark by this time. We parked in aMcdonalds and ate. It had started to rain not heavy. Most of us put on waterproofs.

As we set off home the heavens opened and wewere all soon drenched…some more than others.A lorry nearly jack-knifed in front of Dusty andSandy but that was the only incident to note!!Six of us went to a small friendly Wobbly Wolfrally at Barlow near Chesterfield in Derbyshire(Area x Country??) It was brill, good food, goodbeer, good company, good ride and the views fromthe camp site memorable. Think we, well fatherand daughter team, John and Alice took away mostof the ‘fun day’ games prizes. Well done you two.Great little rally and impressive badge too!

We went on several day visits: Roughley’sStockport gig. Music, food, stalls and meeting upwith lots of other biker friends. Even a wedding. ..None of our lot though.

Roughley’s Christmas toy run.. very wellorganised stopped traffic at every junction nicesafe riding. This run is in doubt for the futurethough as police not too happy about stoppingtraffic. Sad as this is a great Charity run for twolocal Childrens Hospices.

Road Wizards day rally for Combat stress ++. Notsure about this one as I was not involved. Included; stalls, music, food, bike show etc. not sure ifDusty and Sandy ran out of petrol on this outing?

Alan and I kept the side up by joining in the ‘ringo red’ around the M60.Quite a few Trikes and onecouple who had been to one of our meetings. Notjoined yet though? We had to pull off two thirdsround as we were running out of petrol. The lighthad been on for ages nail bitingly close Dusty!Manchester has a Greyhound Racing Track. So weorganised to go the dogs! 8 managed to get aFriday night together. It was great fun we had ameal wine, beer and a competitive spirit as wewere sat at two tables of four. Think we brokeeven. But it was a good do.

We tried to organise an evening for our ChristmasMeal but unfortunately it was impossible to geteveryone together! So 8 of us ate at the LowesArms Denton in our xmas jumpers and t-shirts.The table was set beautifully even had acandelabra a bit like the set for Bat Outa HellVideo?? Spanking meal everyone enjoyed it, lotsof laughter, good company and booze. Why don’tthe xmas hats ever fit?

Well, looking forward to lots of good timestogether in 2016. See you around!!

HOW LOCKIE CHANGED MY LIFEIt was September of 2008 when to many unfortunatemishaps on two wheels determined that I would be wisein investing in a trike.

The alternative being that I spend the rest of my liferiding in cars. No more wind in my hair, no moreexcited silly grins when riding that perfect road and nomore flies in my teeth!

I decided to take a virtual trip around the world to seewhat was out there and what was available to me intrike form, at a price that was permissible.

I found myself in an excited and heady confusion and Irealised I needed to talk to someone that knows trikesand that can answer my many questions.

Many years ago, I think it was in the mid eighties, Iremember sitting in a pub with a bunch of hairy oldbikers where someone had picked up a bike magazineand commented that there was an actual trike ‘club’ (association) called the Brothers Of The Third Wheel. Some laughed, some were intrigued and I sated that if Iwas ever in the position or need for a trike I wouldcheck them out.

So, with this memory I headed for the internet and tofind The Brothers Of The Third Wheel. And that was thebegging of the best decision I have ever made in my life!

I found a really scrappy fixer upper on its last legs andstarted the complete rebuild and redesign. Every nut andbolt was taken off and every nook and crannyexamined. With a lot of had work and the luck ofknowing a lot of bike builders who had businesses that Ineed,ed from polish to paint and everything in between.

I stated being a regular on the BTW-UK forum fromsept 2008, where I learnt about trikes.

But it was more than that. There was a comradery that Ihad longed for amongst the members. A spirit and bondof family and I was soon invited into the conversations.Regaling in stories and long ( very ) tales that had me intears of laughter. I needed no persuasion to join.Though I did have one caveat and that was to finish mytrike and get it on the road before signing up.

Lockie, Tiny, Hoss Paula ‘Bunface’, Hobbit andChrissy spoke to me as if I were part of the family, thetwo years to finish my trike was often spent regularly onthe public section of the forum.

Lockie would pm me and shout out to find where I was.He was insistent that I joined and became a member. Hetold me that “You can come upstairs and have a cuppa, though you may have to do the washing up first “

He told me about the Trikes R Us rally and I decided togo along on the Saturday.

I headed across the carpark and I could see Lockiesitting at a table, relaxed and nursing a cupp of tea, as itwas rather cold and windy.

He knew who

I was without

Introduction

and I knew

we were going

to get along.

There were no

chairs at the

table and

Lockie said

“ I could give you my chair or you could sit on myknee”

I felt I knew him so well that I had no hesition to sit andcollect the long over due hugs that we had spoken abouton the internet.

My final memory that I want to share with you is whenI became his wife ! It was a sunny Sunday and a trip tomeet up with other members from other areas. Mypartner was unable to come due to work. Lockie wasshocked and decided that I needed a husband for the dayWell, it didnt work out to be just the day and I wouldoften here him call me when we were at rallies andevents.

“ Oi ! Wife ! Come here “

Only Lockie !

Blessed be my dear friend, you will always be in myheart.

utsMX d Ne ~ News In Brief ~Axe of area 2 is writing us some words about farewellride out and funeral that was held for our friend Ole’Hoss.

I am assured that this was an

amazing day with a gathering

of trikes and bikes from all

over MK and indeed the UK.

He was an amazing personality

and I cant begin to imagine the

day. I know it will have been filled with laughter andtales of adventures with Hoss.

I am grinning at just typing this, but then comessadness knowing I will never hear his ‘ silver tongue’of whit and charm. Ummm….. I miss you dear friend.

Hoss leaves behind his wonderful partner and newlywed wife, Christine. And to honour her husband,Rodders has been hard at work collecting photos andsignatures, from Hoses' many friends, to put togetheron an amazing t.shirt. Which will be presented toChristine.A truly lovely gesture, Rodders. Could you forward mea photo of it ?

Those of a certain age will probably understand whereI got the idea for the above logo. A real blast from thepast and I am sure many of you will recall the highlychirpy and colourful Noel Edmunds who would appearon your tv on a Saturday morning.

He offered us the chance to swap stuff for other stuff.Ok, that is as far as the connection goes. What I amthinking of here is starting a buy and sell portion ofyour newsletter where members can offer their junk ,which might be someone else's treasure, for sale or forswaps.

I am going to say lets start with trike and triker/bikerrelated goodies and see how it goes. I will kick this offnext issue, so if anyone has something to offer pleasecontact me by email,, facebook or forum.

It has hurt to look at his

photos, even the ones

where he is sporting

a t shirt emblazoned

That was my way

of coming to terms with my loss.

Bring your love with you to the AGM and to ourforthcoming members rally in July.

I willalso cover the rally in more depth in the next edition ofthe newsletter.

With love to you all, my BTW-UK family xXx

I seem to have a few too many words and am finding ithard to edit myself. So, in a ‘nutshell’, please look afteryourselves and each other. Love unconditionally with anopen heart.

There is something that I believe very strongly about andthat is about ‘ how to mourn ‘. There are no guidelinesand I give thanks to that as there is no right or wrongway.

Many of you may not have been able to attend either OleHoss or Lockies final ride due to health, work, distanceor by choice. This is ok, as we must be able to mourn ina way that suits our heart. Do not give a moment to thosethat may judge and whisper, as they are truly misguidedand unable to see the needs of others.

I was unable to attend, but I spent both days in thought, listening to the music I had shared at rallies and rocknights with both of them. I also lit candles and sat inpeace remembering the adventures we had sharedtogether.

I have many more memories of Lockie and myself, as wewere a lot closer than Hoss and I. I have had days where
