ROAD TRAFFIC GROUP UPDATE

Cllr. Bob Adams has kindly agreed to highlight concerns raised with Lincolnshire County Council in July 2017 to see how some of these issues may feed into existing priorities!. North Witham Speed Restrictions Public notices are being put out 14 July 2017; further consultation taking place until 11 August 20172. High Street Ongoing monitoring of problems already reported relating to parking, traffic calming, access and HGVs etc.3. B676 AND STAINBY Signage surveys still to be undertaken. Speeding is still a problem with speeds of over 60 mph being recorded on the B676 at Stainby. Our volunteers are still carrying out community speed checks. Sadly some individuals have limited respect for what is being done or what we are trying to achieve; presumably because there is no consequence for their actions until there is an accident! Abuse will not be tolerated and will be reported to the Police.

Please also make sure you look at the Neighbourhood Plan and SKDC Local Plan (currently in consultation) to see how this may impact on traffic management in our Parish.

THE BIG CLEANSOUTH KESTEVEN DISTRICT COUNCIL IS LAUNCHING THE BIG CLEAN

www.southkesteven.gov.uk/skbigclean or by calling 01476 406066Also if you are willing to help with the clean up, please visit the website for further details.

The referendum on whether or not our Neighbourhood Plan will form part of SKDC’s Local Plan takes place on August 3rd. A huge amount of time and effort, not to mention money, has gone into the creation of the Neighbourhood Plan so I urge you to please use your vote on the day. Let’s not waste this opportunity to have a say in how our home will be shaped in the future. Whilst I’m at it, don’t forget the Wednesday night vigil outside Grantham Hospital..... 6pm - 9pm.

KURLINGWell we are going from strength to strength, with a second day of play. To get our waiting list down we decided to Kurl on a Thursday as well as Monday. The Thursday numbers are slowly creeping up and we no longer have a waiting list. If there is anyone out there who would like to have a go come along on a Thursday at 10am at the Village Hall. You will be most welcome and coffee and biscuits are thrown in. Everyone is very friendly and there is always some one to show you the ropes.I have to make a very special mention now. Two of our members celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary at the end of the month. Chris and Peter, everyone sends their very best wishes and congratulations on your special day. Also, just to make sure I don't miss it, two other people have a special day coming up too. If I forgot this Dave would never speak to me again. He and Anne Marie are tying the knot at the beginning of September. We know Dave is getting nervous because he is really off his game and he's not a bad player really! Have a fantastic day, and we all look forward to being there with you. I shall report further in the next issue LUNCHEON CLUBAs stated in the last In Touch, we are having our annual Bar-B-Q on the 31st July, so are hoping for good weather and sausages that stay on the plate (Bill is in charge of sausages so anything can happen). June will be sorting out the next luncheon in due course. However, if you want to join us please ring June on 861400 and she will tell you all about it.

COLSTERWORTH & DISTRICT GARDENERS & ALLOTMENT HOLDERS ASSOCIATION

We had a real treat for our July meeting - a Garden Walk in the village of Skillington. Six hosts kindly opened their gardens for the evening for our members to admire. The event was organised by Vicky Page, who had planned a circular route through the village, allowing us to appreciate many delightful front gardens, as well as the six 'main attractions'. These were not only beautifully designed and maintained, but also very varied. These ranged from an enormous vegetable garden to cleverly designed small ornamental plots - and from a large, well-established cottage garden to one created only five years ago, with an idyllic sunken pool. The evening ended with refreshments for both members and hosts, served at Vicky's home. Many thanks to her for organising such a delightful evening and to everyone who opened their gardens for us.We take a summer break in August, so there will be no meeting on the second Monday of the month. However, on Saturday, August 26th, we are again holding our Annual Produce and Handicrafts Show. There are classes covering vegetables, flowers, craft and cookery - something for everyone! Women’s Institute

It was just what we needed on a sticky humid day, delicious ice cream or sorbet, and thanks to our guest speaker Robin Dennett manufacturer of the well known Dennett's Ice Cream Co, that is what we had. The firm, based at Spilsby, was founded by Robin's grandparents nearly a hundred years ago. They were farmers and decided to use some of the milk from their herd of Lincolnshire Red cows to make ice cream which was, and still is, popular with the public. They opened a shop on the premises and gradually branched out into neighbouring towns. Their son joined the firm following his demob from the RAF where he served in Italy. He introduced flavours which he had found in Italy and they are still sold today in the shop opposite the White Hart in Lincoln. The farm has long gone except for one field which Grandad left to the seven grandchildren. Robin showed us the extensive list of the different flavours all sounding delicious but Brown Bread flavour, you must be joking! Nevertheless it is very popular. Maybe it's curiosity and there is never a second helping, but it is still a best seller. The shop in Lincoln sells the ice cream on the ground floor and in the 14 century cellar there is a tea and coffee shop selling that

beloved of every W.l. member, cake (must make a note next time in Lincoln). Robin's daughter has joined the firm opening a new shop in Spilsby selling both the ice cream and old fashioned sweets, and she has a daughter who will hopefully take the firm into a fifth generation. The talk was illustrated with photographs of the founders and the equipment used in the process of manufacture. He was thanked by Gillian Dexter for both the talk and the lovely samples which we all enjoyed prior to our usual tea and cake, this month provided by hostesses Kim and Mary. Gillian was in the Chair with the boss still not able to join us. We heard that we had come third in the Lincs Show cake challenge and that Helen Scorror was triumphant in the Allington W.I.quiz, winning the Mastermind trophy. She didn't tell us that last month when she gave a report on the event hiding her light under the proverbial as usual. For the salad workshop and the Take-a-Chance new numbers were distributed. Keeping our fingers crossed for a win, like we had this last year. Two of us have applied for the trip to the Royal Court of Justices. Sandra Quinsee read the report of the National Annual meeting which our delegate from Corby Glen had sent to us. The resolution on the prevention of Plastic Soup was passed with very nearly 100% margin, only 114 Institutes voted against it. County have another quiz night lined up for us in the Autumn, a craft workshop in November and a party to celebrate the Federation's Ruby

anniversary (youngsters). We have also been invited to Dave and Madeleine's celebrations at the White Lion. Our plans for our centennial party were announced and we practised our “anthem”, although I can't see Gareth Malone being impressed if he hears about our “choir”. I caught our speaker having a laugh at the lyrics especially when one verse was appropriate to him. National Federation have confirmed that we are one of the oldest active lnstitutes,in fact we are the 67th oldest in the country and were in the first 140 to be formed - which was the number of Institutes by the end of 1917. We still continue to grow with another new member paying her subs at the start of the meeting. Wow, who would have thought it when six of us at the start of 2012 wondered if we could keep it going. Thanks to everyone who answered the clarion call. The price of a dozen fancy cups of coffee is well worth it isn't it ? The Sports and Social Club will be buzzing when we meet in August with all our invited guests, members of the Executive together with two members of each of our neighbouring Institutes in the Kesteven Group. With an exhibition of our crafts (don't forget to bring them ladies), archives and entertainment extraordinaire it will be a day to be remembered. This year we are having a birthday cake, and can't wait to see it, it sounds quite spectacular. I'll tell you all about it in next month's “In Touch”.

the weather. This means that they can appear synchronised, especially in years when there are few days like this. Last year was a disastrous one for Butterflies, because of a mild winter (when parasites destroy overwintering stages) and long, cold wet periods in summer, when adults should be flying. It is too early yet to sum up this year, which is why Butterfly Counts are so important. Reports of the once locally extinct Silver Washed Fritillary are probably as a result of introductions. Records are in of the first of the new generation of Brimstones and Red Admirals along with those of Blue-tailed and Common Blue Damselflies and brown Hawker Dragonflies. More unusually a Banded Demoiselle, a male with brilliant blue body and dark blue markings on wings, was seen in a garden. To Look For In August - The last day the Swifts are seen. The adults will have gone first. Butterfly records are more important than ever. Cost cutting means that there will be more late flowering plants on verges (regrettably with road safety concerns). Here's hoping we all have at least some time to “sit and stare” and enjoy the summertime.

I look forward to hearing from you at 61 Woolsthorpe Road, 860465, e-mail [email protected]

Jane Ostler

The dry conditions have continued into the third week of July, and with them an abundance of insects. House Martins are among the birds enjoying the feast. Before it was developed for housing they used to nest on derelict buildings at the old Vacu-lug tyre site. Fortunately later generations have adopted the eaves of the new buildings. Nesting sites have remained constant for swallows and swifts but fewer swallows have returned and this year many first nests failed to rear a brood. By the time this issue is received young swifts, feeding in the skies, will have replaced their parents already on their way back to Africa.

Experienced birdwatchers don't rely on matching a bird's appearance to pictures in a book. They use something called “jizz” which puts together all their experiences. This may include stance, movement (walking or hopping), take off and flight, feeding behaviour, contact calls and song, overall size and shape. In this way a group of young Mistle Thrushes in a grass field at the edge of Twyford Wood was eventually recognised from a video. A single adult has also been a regular visitor on the Woolsthorpe Playing Field, joining the Pied Wagtail feeding there.

The Mistle Thrush holds itself quite erect, seemingly proud of its smart appearance. In the recent high winds it lived up to its nick name of Storm Cock as it sang with ruffled feathers from the top of swaying trees. On the roadside verges hundreds of grasshoppers have hatched. This has also been the place to see in numbers, Meadow Brown, Gatekeepers and Ringlet Butterflies, Cinnabar Moth caterpillars on Ragwort and Soldier Beetles paired up on their dining tables of Hogweed flowers. Whilst enjoying the treasury of wild flowers at this time of the year we need to remember the value of plants considered to be weeds in our gardens. The humble White Deadnettle has had bees supping its deep throated flowers since they first emerged in March. Some flowers will still be there for them until it is too cold for the bees, though not for the flowers. There have been mass emergences of insects in gardens too. Flying ants were reported on several days in July. These were almost certainly the Black Pavement Ant (Lasius niger). Contrary to myth these do not always fly in a co-ordinated fashion all over the country on the same day. The males and females emerge from nests to mate and reproduce on days which are both warm (25C is the optimum) and still but also when they anticipate a coming change in

Colsterworth Pre-School News

As you may be aware the government has and still is making huge changes to the shape of Early Years Childcare and Education. Not only is the government focusing on implementing additional free childcare for working parents but there is a huge emphasis on early education with the need for Early Years setting to be managed and led by teams or individuals who have a vast knowledge of child development, Early Years Education and Leadership. This has resulted in a greater commitment needed from the pre-school committee members. As you are aware all of our committee are voluntary members who give up increasing amounts of time and are required to commit to regular training. As the childcare structure has changed so has the structure of everyone’s work/life balance leading to decreasing free time to commit to the pre-school committee role. As a committee we have decided, in the best interests of providing a sustainable preschool into the future, there needs to be a change. Therefore after over 40 years, as of September 2017 the pre-school will no longer be led by a committee. Colsterworth Methodist Pre-school will become Colsterworth Preschool and will be owned and managed exclusively by Sharon McGown and Sam Smith, with a transition period during the first part of the year, while the registration process is completed.Sharon and Sam have a clear vision of moving the preschool forward to benefit children and families. They are greatly excited and are relishing the new challenges ahead. Both the committee and staff thank everyone who has been involved over the years as a child, parent, committee member, volunteer or staff member. Without your commitment the preschool would not be the loving, caring environment it is today and will continue to be.
