Broadcast live from London’s West End, see Ian McKellen’s ‘extraordinarily moving portrayal’ (Independent) of King Lear as Jonathan Munby directs this contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play.

Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a King, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.

Down on his luck in the suburbs, John Falstaff plans to hustle his way to a comfortable retirement by seducing the wives of two wealthy men.

Unknown to him, it’s the women of Windsor who really pull the strings, orchestrating Falstaff’s comeuppance amidst a theatrical smorgasbord of petty rivalries, jealousies and over-inflated egos. For a fat Englishman, a Welshman and a Frenchman, the only way is Windsor…

Vanessa Kirby and Eric Kofi Abrefa star in this brand new production of August Strindberg’s play Miss Julie which remains shocking and fiercely relevant in its new setting of contemporary London.

Wild and newly single, Julie throws a late night party. In the kitchen, Jean and Kristina clean up as the celebration heaves above them. Crossing the threshold, Julie initiates a power game with Jean – which rapidly descends into a savage fight for survival.

LIVE FROM SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE – THE WINTER'S TALEThu 4 Oct, 7.15pm£16.50, £12.50 under 18s

Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, broadcast live from the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End.

Wilde’s much-loved masterpiece throws love, logic and language into the air to make one of theatre’s most dazzling firework displays. Jack, Algy, Gwendolyn and Cecily discover how unsmooth runs the course of true love, while Lady Bracknell keeps a baleful eye on this mayhem of manners.

The Winter’s Tale is Shakespeare’s great play of the irrational and inexplicable, illustrating how uncontrollable emotions can range across gender, country, class and age and taking audiences from the stifling atmosphere of the Sicilian court to the unbuttoned joy of a Bohemian festival.

Staged at the Globe Theatre in London, this new production is directed by Blanche McIntyre and stars Will Keen (The Crown, Wolf Hall), Priyanga Burford (W1A, Marcella) and Annette Badland (EastEnders, Father Brown).

Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo play Shakespeare’s famous fated couple in his great tragedy of politics, passion and power.

Caesar and his assassins are dead. General Mark Antony now rules alongside his fellow defenders of Rome. But at the fringes of a war-torn empire the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and Mark Antony have fallen fiercely in love. In a tragic fight between devotion and duty, obsession becomes a catalyst for war.

It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world but his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the Crown, and expose the fine line between a King and a man.

The cast of this new production of Alan Bennett’s play includes Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss and Adrian Scarborough.

Nikiya, a temple dancer, is in love with the warrior Solor. The High Brahmin pursues Nikiya, and when she rejects him, he plans to take revenge on Solor.

An iconic 19th-century Russian ballet, La Bayadère was originally performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in St Petersburg in 1877. It remained unknown in the West until the Kirov Ballet toured with the Kingdom of the Shades scene in 1961. Natalia Makarova created this production in 1980 which was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 1989.

Wotan craves the ring, but, bound by his own laws, he can’t retrieve it himself. With a mortal woman he has twins, Siegmund and Sieglinde, and hopes Siegmund will become the free agent he needs to take the ring.

Die Walküre has become the most performed of Richard Wagner’s four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, loved and admired for its nuanced and intelligent exploration of complex family entanglements, expressed through music of astonishing power.

Sung in German with English subtitles.
