Mary Rose was built between 1509 and 1511 and was a highly successful warship until she capsized and sank in the Solent in July 1545.

In 1982, after many years of painstaking search and investigation, she was recovered from the sea bed with unprecedented interest from the public.

Retired Operations Director, Nigel Kelland, who worked on the Mary Rose project for many years, will present a fascinating insight into the complex operation to recover this National Treasure, followed by Q&As. He recently returned to England after spending many years as creative director at several advertising agencies in New York City and it’s this graphic design background that influences his work – conceptual, minimalist and bold. The theme for the 2019 Flavel Annual Open Art Exhibition is ‘Shadows and Light’.

If you would like to submit an original drawing, painting, print, photograph, 3D work or textile for consideration please see our website www.theflavel.org.uk for full details and to download an application form, or collect one from the Box Office.

Prizes are generously sponsored by The David Alexander Open Art Exhibition Fund: the Winner's prize is £200 cash, and the runner up will receive a £50 Flavel gift voucher.

'When the soul searching ends and you get that feeling of belonging, well, it's mind blowing, confusing and oh so humbling. You get turned inside out as you come to realise, above all else, that these are your people and nothing in your life will ever be the same again'!

Lili John's heartfelt exhibition exploring the notion of 'Tribe' is a vibrant exploration of the colours and textures from her recent travels to Africa (namely Uganda and Ghana).
