THE LONDON COCKNEY ... There are several guessesas to the origin of the word"Cockney," as applied to an individual; none of those guessescarry much conviction, how-ever. The first meaning of the word seemsto havebeen used to describe a small, misshapenegg, and it was not until the early seventeenth century that the term appearsto havebeenapplied to individuals, especially residents of London.Since about 1800 a Cockney hasmeant a Londoner born within the sound of Bow Bells, thegreat chimes of the Church of St. Mary-Ie-Bow, located in the East-end area of London. The speech of a Cockney is often difficult to understand; the so-called cockney accent waschiefly characterized at the time of Oliver by substituting a "V" for a "W", or vice-versa,alsoby pronouncing an "F" or "V" for "th", thus, fing for thing, farver for farther, etc. Anotherpeculiarity involved substituting the sound of "Y" for ai, ei or a, thus dyly for daily, Iydy forlady for example. Ommission of the "H" when it is the first letter of a word, such as 'usbendis well-known: lessfrequently an "H" is prefixed to many words commer.cing with a vowelsuch asheel for eel, henchor for· anchor, etc.
