WSSC Championship Show Judge 2019 Thelma Ritchie ‘SLAPESTONES’ (Dogs)

Born and raised on a farm on the edge of The Lake District, I have been around dogs all my life. We bought our first Welsh Springer Spaniel in 1996 from Sandra Stevenson. ‘Holly’ (Ch. Steelriver Rysa) started my love for the Breed. She was my first Show dog, my first Champion and Slapestones’ Foundation bitch. Holly was the only bitch left in the litter, how lucky were we! All our Welsh are descended from Holly in a direct line. Two separate five-generations of Show Champions, what a legacy she has left. I have owned or bred, 9 UK Show Champions, 1 Full UK Champion, and 1 US Champion. Over the years I have also been lucky enough to own, Top WSS bitch of the year, top WSS Male of the year, Top Stud Dog, Top Sire and Top Puppy. Our main highlights as well as the above, have been: Ch. Steelriver Rysa, a Full UK Champion; Sh. Ch. Slapestones Tornado, Best In Show National Gundog 2008; and Sh. Ch. Hillrobin Galaxy at Slapestones JW, Best Of Breed Crufts 2009. I am a member of all four Breed clubs, have been on the committee of Penrith Dog Training Club, and for the past few years Chairperson of Penrith and District Canine Society. I am currently Cumbria’s rep for WSS Rescue And Rehoming. In 1997, I attended my very first WSSC Championship Show where Steelriver Rysa won BPIS, never in my wildest dreams, then, did I think I would be judging dogs at this prestigious Show. I thank the committee and members for this honour, and I am looking forward to the day. Thelma Ritchie (Slapestones)

WSSC Championship Show Judge 2019 Jan Rees ‘TYPICA’ (Bitches)

The Welsh show scene was extremely strong at the time and I watched and learned from the best, not only Harold but Cliff Payne (Tregwillym) & Noel & Dodo Hunton-Morgans (Dalati) A wonderful apprenticeship to have. I joined the WSSC in 1974 and later held the office of Cup Steward for 10 years. I am now a Vice-President of the Club. I am also a founder member, Vice President and currently Chairperson of the WSSC South Wales, a position I have held for the past 10 years. Some of my noteable successes have been with Sh.Ch. Typica Countryman JW Sh.CM, T. Fieldsman JW and Sh Ch Coedybrain Carys at T. JW Sh.CM, but my pride and joy has to be my ‘Full’ Champion Typica Goldigger JW Sh.CM. ‘Digger’ gained his show title at 26 months and it was one of my ambitions and goals when I first started in the breed – to breed and handle one of my dogs to gain their Full Champion status, a coveted and very rare title in a Welsh Springer – an amazing achievement and a dream come true. Since then I enjoyed success with T. Kingfisher, T. Country Maid and most recently T. Flash Harry JW, Hudolus Rhys Henllys at Typica Sh.CM.and T. Seren Aur. Judging started in 1981 going on to all Gundogs, Group and BIS’s at Open Show level . I first gave C.C.’s in 1986 at SWKA and have awarded to date 16 sets. I have been privileged to judge at the Swedish Club Show 3 times, Gothenburg, Stockholm and Umea, the Spaniel Specialty in Finland and the WSSC of the Netherlands Championship Show and have also attended the National Specialty in America. Together with two previous WSSC Championship shows in 1992 and 2005 I have officiated at the WSSCSW and SEWSSC and in 2007 had the ultimate ’once in a lifetime’ honour of judging our breed at Crufts – another major ambition. To be invited to judge at the WSSC Championship Show for the 3rd time in my career is an honour and a privilege. Thank you, I very much look forward to the appointment.

I believe it was fate in 1969 when I took in a stray Welsh. The start of nearly 50 years love affair with this wonderful breed, little did I know this at the time! I attended Cardiff Championship Show in my lunchtime and knew then that I wanted to breed and exhibit these lovely dogs. I then purchased Greyclouds Klever Dick showing him with medium success. It was at this time that I met my husband Alan and discovered that his dad Harry had a small kennel of working Welsh. Our affix Ty-Pica was the name of the house he lived in. A bitch pup was purchased and with the guidance of Harold Newman, of the famous Pencelli kennel, we mated her in 1975 to the great Sh.Ch.Progress of Pencelli, our very first litter. We kept a male – Typica Teifion JW who had a wonderful show career. The highlight being beating his famous sire for the C.C. at Richmond Championship Show under Mary Roslin Williams in 1976.

WSSC Championship Show Judge 2019Arlene Tester 'AVILT'

(Breeders’ Class, Referee & Handling)

Having been in the breed for over 30 years, of which 20 I have served on the WSSC Committee, I feel sure that the majority of exhibitors will know me to some degree by now. In 2016 I judged dogs at this show and in 2018 at the NEWSSC.

I have judged handling classes for the breed in the past as well as at general shows and I run a Ringcraft Club each week.

16. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.

• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.

• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to

drink.• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of water available

to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time.

Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED.

17. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the Board for disciplinary action under the Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. The use of pinch collars, electronic shock collars, or prong collars, is not permitted at any show licensed by the Kennel Club. This shall apply at the venue or within the precincts of the show.

18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.

19. No modifications will be made to this Schedule except by permission of the Board of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine Press wherever possible.

20. The Show will be held under Kennel Club Rules and Show Regulations. Every exhibitor making an entry or entries at this Show shall be deemed to have agreed to abide by these Rules and Regulations and it is on this understanding only that entries are received.

21. The Committee of this Show can accept no responsibility for products advertised or sold by stand holders at the Show, and remind exhibitors that grooming products on sale may not meet the requirements of the Regulations for Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

22. Any owner, competitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is required to remove as soon as possible any loose hair, any fouling caused by their dog(s) or any other litter, at any Kennel Club licensed show within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches.

23. Parents are reminded that they are responsible for the actions of and any damage caused by their children within the environs of the Show.

24. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches.

25. The Committee will be most anxious for the safety of dogs and exhibitors but all present have a duty of care for their own safety. 26. A dog may be disqualified by the Board from any award, whether an objection has been lodged or not, if proved amongst other things to have been: a) registered or recorded as having been bred by the scheduled Judge, this shall not apply to a Judge appointed in an emergency; b) exhibited without payment of appropriate entry fees.

27. Every exhibitor shall ensure that whilst the dog is being exhibited, its handler shall display the correct ring number.
