From the Principal  

Debating Congratulations to our Year 10 Debating team of Madeleine Bosler, Elesi Kougioumtzis, Taylor Rowe and Tom Butler who yesterday defeated Merewether High School in the semi‐final of the NSW Premiers Debating Competition. This team now progresses to the NSW State final which will be held at the Head Office of the NSW Department of Education and Communities on Friday November 7. This will be the second consecutive year that this team has contested the final in this competition, winning it last year over a very strong Caringbah High School team. Madeleine was also a member of that victorious team from last year, so it is absolutely fantastic to see her be able to attempt to defend that championship.  

We also wish Madeleine and Elisi well next week as they will be attending selection trials for the Northern Sydney Regional Debating team at Epping Boys High School.  Athletics Success Year 9 student, Tessa Constantine represented our school last weekend at the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships at the Homebush Athletics Centre. Tessa contested her favoured event, the 400m hurdles, in the Under 17 Division – up an age group from where she would normally compete. In a close finish, Tessa and another competitor recorded the same time, 65:24, but after close analysis of the photo finish Tessa was awarded second place. As a result of this, Tessa will now represent NSW at the National All Schools Championships to be held in Adelaide in December.  We all congratulate Tessa on her achievement.  Musical Performance Congratulations to Year 7 student, Jason Lee who last weekend was selected to perform at the NSW Art Gallery and shared his musical talents with a  

very appreciative gallery audience. Jason studies at the prestigious Australian Institute of Music under the guidance of Ms Irina Klamka. We certainly look forward to hearing more of Jason’s achievements in the future.  NBSC Student Leadership Conference Today, our 2015 Student Executive attended the annual Northern Beaches Secondary College Student Leadership Conference. Throughout the day they participated in a number of workshops focusing on leadership skills and how they can make a difference in their schools during the coming year. The keynote address was delivered by the Mayor of Warringah Council, Mr Michael Regan who spoke about his leadership journey and the skills that he has learned to be effective.  Mr Regan’s key message was for all students to ‘have a go’ and not be scared off by possible failure, but to use that as an inspiration for future successes. He does this through surrounding himself with good people and uses their skills to strive for success, empowering those around him. I have no doubt that our Student Executive gained much from this presentation, and the conference, and I look forward to working with them and their SRC team in 2015.

Volunteering Award Jack Bennett of Year 10 has been recognised within our community for his ongoing commitment to the Manly Sailability program. Jack has volunteered his time in this program for the past 18 months and has been named as the Outstanding Student Volunteer of the Year within the Northern Sydney Region at the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards.   Organisers of the Sailability program spoke very highly of Jack and his work with disabled people in teaching them the skills and procedures involved in sailing. For many of these participants it is the only physical activity they get to enjoy and Jack is playing a significant role in enriching their lives.  More information about this program can be found at: http://www.manlysailability.com.au  Publics Speaking Year 9 student, Rupert Canning represented our school in the State final of the NSW Legacy Public Speaking competition at the Art Gallery of NSW this morning. While not winning the competition, Rupert was highly commended by the judges for his impromptu speech as well as for the delivery of his prepared speech. This is a fantastic achievement in reaching the final and having the judges speak so highly of him in their adjudication.   Rupert should be very proud of his achievement – we are certainly proud of him and thank him for the credit that he has brought to our school since his transfer from Cromer Campus.

From The Deputy Principals As Year 11 move into Year 12 there have been some hard decisions made around subject choices. To their credit, students have undertaken consultation with a number of sources and are happy with their decisions. Learning to make a choice can be tough, when academic and extra‐curricular capacities are outstanding in so many of our students. The thin line between attempting to do too much and keeping options open can be tricky.  Students are encouraged to keep lines of communication open and to seek counsel when they need to. To this end, there will be a Parent Information evening held later this term to unravel the mysteries of the HSC and to hear from a few who have been through the process. More information will be available shortly.  It was my absolute pleasure to be at the finals of the NSW Public Speaking competition at the State Library today to support Year 9 student Rupert Canning. Rupert has earned a position at this prestigious event through commitment and hard work and the school wishes him well. Regardless of the outcome of today, it is important to recognise effort applied and to applaud it.  Year 7 have been seen out and around the school a bit more as they express their confidence in being nearly Year 8 students. It is a wonderful journey that as a teacher we are so very privileged to be part of; the journey through adolescence into young adulthood from a school perspective. Students are encouraged to keep developing their work ethic as sustained application is never wasted effort. Who was it that said "the harder I work the luckier I seem to become?"

Year 12 students had their first HSC examination on Monday and most students seemed happy to have finally started on the last stage of their HSC journey. Some students have completed a few subjects this week and I wish all students the best for their examinations. Sign out forms are available from the Front Office and students can start returning textbooks, etc at their convenience. Please ensure all sign outs are completed and returned by Friday 7 November.  Year 12 Graduation will be held at Freshwater Senior Campus on Monday 10 November starting promptly at 4pm. All Year 12 parents, caregivers and family are invited to attend. 

Year 10 students will be given information about Term 4 assessment and events at the year meeting next Monday morning. In consultation with executive, staff and students, the requirements for the Problem Challenge, Digital Learning Portfolio and award of a Year 10 Medallion have been reviewed. The Problem Challenge will involve students synthesising the knowledge and skills from a range of Year 10 subjects to answer one question. Students will be given the question and scaffold on Monday and then have three weeks to prepare for the one‐hour written task in the Hall on Wednesday 12 November. Presentations of the Digital Learning Portfolio, to take place in Week 7, will be optional. Students are required to indicate their intention to present to Mrs Whalan by the end of Week 4. The award of a Year 10 Medallion, to be presented at Presentation Night, will require students to gain an A or B grade for their Digital Learning Portfolio.

  From both DPs: Just a note to the school community about the choice we have made in collaboration with Mr Rudd to alternate our responsibilities for Years 7, 9, 11 and 8, 10, 12. We will each follow our Year groups through the school so that over time we will both be capable of looking after the needs of all students in Years 7‐12. In this way the corporate knowledge of the senior executive staff is increased which will lead to better outcomes for students in the long term.  At present Years 8, 10, 12 are supported by Ms Whalan and Years 7, 9, 11 by Mrs Bannister. In 2015 that will reverse. This will allow us each to get to know half of the school just that little bit better.

This article was submitted by C. McGregor of Class 5C in the 1958 issue of The Pines magazine. Even 56 years later students today can probably relate to some of these sentiments. Some values remain the same – some change.  REASONS FOR WORRYING Are you worrying about your forthcoming examinations? If you are, here is some advice.  

There are only two reasons for worrying: you have either studied hard or you have not done enough study. If you have studied hard there is nothing to 

worry about; if you have not done enough study there are only two things to worry about; you are either going to just pass, or you are going to fail.  

If you pass there is nothing to worry about; if you fail there are again only two things to worry about; you will either be employed, or you will be unemployed. If you are employed there is nothing to worry about; if you are unemployed here again there are only two things to worry about. You will either scrounge enough money to live, or you will die.  

If you live there is nothing to worry about; if you are going to die again there are only two things to worry about. You will either go to the ‘place above’ or ‘down below’.  

If you are going to the ‘place above’ there is nothing to worry about; if you are going ‘down below’ you will be so busy shaking hands with your old school friends (who, like yourself, did not study) that you won’t have time to worry anyhow.  

So why worry at all?

Australian Business Week: The final cost of ABW is $70. Some students have paid a $50 deposit. The extra $20 is now due to the Cash office. The number of places available for ABW has been revised down to 30. Permission notes plus payment must be completed by the end of next week 24/10/14. All names of students doing ABW have to be submitted to the College at the beginning of Week 4.

 

Volunteering:  All Year 10 students should complete their 20 hours of volunteering. Filled in and signed off volunteering booklets are now due to Mrs Rixon in the Career’s office. Place your completed booklet in the silver Mailbox outside the Career’s office. All students must have their booklets in by 24/10/14.

MUSICAL WASHUP We made a start last Saturday ….but there is still a lot that needs to be done PAINTING The new extension has to be painted (brickwork, new formwork). FLOORING Ideally everything is going to be kept cleaner if we have flooring on the old concrete that can be easily swept. Any ideas? SORTING All costumes are washed and on their hangers; they need to be sorted  CLEANING Dust proof lungs are an advantage. The reward at the end is life affirming!

Intermediate Band Tour to Mudgee, Term 3 

On the last week of Term 3, the string ensemble and the intermediate bands, Wind Ensemble and Big Band, had their tour to Mudgee. This was a resounding success with performances given to 6 public schools, the smallest of which, Goolma, has only 6 students!! Highlights of the tour were the kids buying and organising their own breakfasts from the local Woolies, the talent quest, barefoot bowling and the jumping air pillow at the caravan park.  The fantastic opportunities that arose from the Mudgee trip were invaluable and left everyone feeling positive and rewarded. Thank you to the accompanying adults, Mark Brown, Ms Leviton, Mr Edman and Ms Kinghorn.   2015 International Band Tour Fundraiser ‐  Rebel Run Sydney‐ Sunday 2nd November 2014 – Homebush. It is with great honour we have been asked to assist Fairfax Media again with another

 How You or Your Organisation Can Become More Involved in ABW 

Enterprise Education  ABW is a one week program involving students in teams of ten learning about business by running their own computer simulated company, guided by a mentor on loan from business.  ABW is a community based self help program which now operates in all Australian States and provides programs at the School, State and National Level.  Students in their thousands across Australia are developing a better understanding of business, its role in the building of a more prosperous nation and gaining a better appreciation of themselves, as the challenge of ABW stimulates them to rise above perceived limitations.  Your role in making this happen is invaluable, but perhaps through your circumstance or organisation, you can do even more.     Many organisations are making a contribution at the State or National level, through sponsorship, the provision of mentors, speakers or in kind sponsorship. If you would like to find out more about ABW and how you or your organisation can participate further, just photocopy the section below, complete and post to: Northern Beaches Secondary College, College Administration Centre, Harbord Rd, Freshwater NSW 2096 or fax to our office on 9939 6904.   I would like to know more about being involved in ABW as:
