Transcript of The Weekender Magazine - Missouri
Let’s go Eat! What better way is there to celebrate summer than to
have a cookout, a picnic, or family potluck? And what about a night on thetown or a day at the
fair? We took a survey recently andfound the numberone place our readers enjoy going is “out to eat”
Regardless of the budget or schedule, we all like todine out once in awhile. The survey also revealed “din-ing out” as the number one thing to do. So if you can
combine another activity with a specialfood event, then that’s a big
bonus! Some of my favorite memories are
during a meal with family or friends. For instance a few years ago, my hus-band andI took two of ourgrandchil-dren to a fancy seafood restaurant in
Orlando, Fla. It was known for servingthe lobster caught by staff of the Time Bandit featuredon the television show, “Deadliest Catch” What a lux-ery. We got to watch the oldest eat a salmon patty forthe first time ever and she liked it.
The other granddaughter, however, insisted on eatingchicken. The chef obliged. The desert of chocolate cake-was big enough to serve all four of us. So this issue isthe first of many to come addressing fun places to go (toenjoy eating,) things to do (while we enjoy eating) andpeople to see (to help us enjoy eating.
Food, food, and more food. We can learn how to makepreparations for a food party. See page 10. Or we canfind out where the best barbecue in Missouri is served.See page 6. How about a festival named for a particulartype of food? See pages 9 and 13.
Whateveryour choice, be sure to take time to enjoy thefood, your family and friends.
Until the next issue........Kathy Barnett

All across the good ol’ U.S. ofA, you can savor an area’s ownspecialty foods. PacificNorthwest: salmon. New York'sConey Island New York: hotdogs. Philadelphia: cheese-steakhoagies. Louisiana: spicy Cajun.Oklahoma: beef steak.
In Missouri, the first thing thatcomes to mind is mouth wateringbarbecue you can smell a blockaway ... that's a good thing.
US News and World Reportincludes Kansas City and St.Louis on their list of the topseven BBQ cities in America ...and for good reason.
VisitMO staffer Elise Eimertoured several St. Louis BBQjoints and posted this reportabout her journey: Tour de BBQ.
St. Louis is famous for wood-smoked baby back ribs and porksteaks, among other meat selec-tions, usually heavily sauced. Thegreater St. Louis area is said toconsume more barbecue sauceper capita than any other city inthe nation; we think a bib mightbe a good idea.
• Pappy's Smokehouse wasnamed one of the “101 Best
Places to Chow Down inAmerica” by The TravelChannel.
• Bogarts Smokehouse offerstheir special spin on some ofAmerica’s favorite foods, includ-ing apricot glazed ribs, slowroasted turkey, smoked prime riband smoked pastrami.
