Places to go, people to see & things to do in Missouri, June issue

Transcript of The Weekender Magazine

Happy Father’s DayI had two options for the subject matter of this month's

editorial. I could either wax eloquent about Father's Dayor choose from a myriad of festivals scheduled for thismonth.

Festivals are great. There are thousands of varieties toentertain, educate and enrich us. But festivals come andgo whereas fathers are important all the time. Festivals orFathers? Fathers or Festivals? Festivals to/with/for/aboutFathers? Activities could include a most-beloved t-shirtfashion show. Or perhaps it would be more interesting to

hold a World's Ugliest Tie Competition. When it came right down to it, there wasno contest. Somewhere in the middle ofthe battle of the F's between fathers andfestivals, I was reminded of a story. I don'tknow who wrote it and I am writing itfrom memory, so my apologies if it con-tains any errors.

The Story of the Prodigal Sonin the Key of F

Feeling footloose and fancy free, a feather- brained fellowasked his fond father to fork over the family finances. He fledfar into foreign fields and frittered away his fortune feastingfabulously with faithless friends. Finally, he found himself afeed flinger in a filthy farmyard.

“Forsooth!” said he. “My father's flunkies fare far fancier.”So he returned to his fond father and said, “Father, I haveflunked! I have foolishly forfeited family favor.”

“Phooey!” said fond father. “Fetch the fatted fatling. Letfrivolous folly begin for fond frater has returned.”

So often, this story focuses on the son and his return home. But let's consider the many attributes of the father. He wasgenerous, patient, forgiving, loving and welcomed his son'sreturn in spite of the many bad choices this young man hadmade.

One time during a women's group study, someone made thecomment that nobody had a good father figure. I quickly dis-agreed. My father was all the things a father should be: lov-ing, patient, generous, gentle, faithful, forgiving, respectful . . .and the list goes on. No, he wasn't perfect. No one is. Hewill be the first person to say so, which also makes him veryhumble.

This year for Father's Day, take the time to let your fatherknow how much you love him and appreciate him. I just did. Now, all I have left to do is plan a Festival for Fathers. Nowwhat did I do with that ragged old shirt and ugly necktie?

COLUMBIA - Multi-platinum selling singer/song-writer Dierks Bentley will perform outside Live on9th Street hosted by the Blue Note on June 13 at 7p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are now on salefor $35.

The block of 9th Street between Broadway andWalnut will be closed with the entry gate at thenorth end on the corner. Beverages will be servedboth outside and inside and this event will be heldrain or shine. For mor information, visit www.the-bluenote.com

Bentley’s tour has forged his own brand of coun-try music, combining classic country songwriting, influences of bluegrass instrumentation and theenergy of rock ’n’ roll. Bentley’s sixth studio album,“Home,”released earlier this year, debuted at No. 1and has spawned three consecutive chart-toppinghits, marking 10 career No. 1 songs for Bentley as asinger and songwriter. Home also garnered Bentleythree 2012 CMA Award nominations for Album ofthe Year and Single and Song of the Year for the titletrack. His five previous studio albums have soldmore than five million copies and earned him aninvitation to join the Grand Ole Opry.

Opening for Bentley will be Chris Stapleton. Afterjust one decade in Music City, Kentucky nativeChris Stapleton has accomplished more than mostmusicians hope to accomplish in a lifetime. Vivid, edgy, passionate - no matter the adjective used todescribe his music, no word can truly capture thedepth of his prolific songwriting, soulful voice, andhonest musicianship. He moved to Nashville in thefall of 2001 with a catalog of twenty songs, a suit-case, and his guitar. After hearing simple guitar andvocal recordings of the songs Stapleton had writtenby himself, Liz O'Sullivan was determined to signhim as a songwriter at the newly formed SeagayleMusic. Frank Rogers and Chris DuBois were equallyenchanted, and within two months, Stapleton hadwhat many songwriters wait years for: his first cut.

Fast forward ten years later, and he has too manysuccessful collaborations to even count. He writesfor any number of reasons - the commercial market, his own enjoyment, because he or a co-writer has anidea, but the joy of it - and his greatest work - isborn of not ever knowing what the purpose is. Leftto his own devices, he is aware that he can be "wayout there," but his diverse catalog is proof that heunderstands consistency, creativity, and the impor-tance of marrying the two to be a successful song-writer.

"I don't sit around dreaming up singles for artists -that's just not gonna happen" - these claims that hedoesn't take the time to worry about what directionwriting will take create co-writes conducive to cre-ativity, resulting in chart topping singles withKenny Chesney, Josh Turner, and Darius Rucker. In2006, Stapleton joined forces with Mike Hendersonand seasoned veterans Richard Bailey, MikeFleming, and Tammy Rogers to form TheSteelDrivers, a bluegrass band with rock, country, and soul influences. Writing with Henderson sincehis move to Nashville years earlier created a collec-tion of remarkable songs, most of which wereunlikely to be recorded by commercial country.Henderson strove to play a regular gig, and beforethey knew it, they were playing all original songsand catching the eye of record label executives.Their first record garnered the band a Grammynomination, and their sophomore effort, praised bycritics, earned them two more Grammy nods.
