Welcome to Saint Joseph Parish! March 29, 2020 www.stjosephmech.org Fifth Sunday of Lent P ARISH TRANSFORMATION:

SERVE: “Do small things with great love.” Part 5 of 5

I remember my dear Grandmother always being involved in her parish in Steelton. She

had a huge heart for others, and was one of the pillars of that faith community. In fact, when she died

unexpectedly when I was a senior in college, the church was packed for her funeral Mass. Her pastor

shared with my family that hers was the largest funeral he had in that church. So many people came to

know, love and respect my “Granny” because she had a place in her heart for so many. And when it

came to Christmas and Easter, she and my Grandfather always had a steady stream of visitors to their

home. Granny was a wonderful cook, and this is especially where she shared the gifts God had given

her, using her cooking and baking skills not only at home, but most especially with the people of her

faith community, be it a fundraising dinner, a bake sale, etc. As an immigrant from Slovenia, she may

not have picked up the English language all that well, but you definitely knew where her heart was.

It was Mother Teresa of Calcutta who said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small

things with great love.” I know that this describes my Grandmother!

To do small things with great love is, for me, what lies at the foundation of why we as Catholic

Christians are called to be at the service of each other as we look into the expectation of our Parish

Vision Statement, SERVE.

In today’s Gospel for this 5th Sunday of Lent, we hear the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead.

Jesus has come to serve this family, these siblings who were among his closest friends, whose home

was always open to Him. Lazarus, Mary and Martha were always willing to serve the needs of Jesus.

They did small things for Him, always with great love. Now, we see Jesus do something great for them,

of course, with perfect love, when he raises Lazarus from the dead.

Our Vision Statement is: SAINT JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH IS A GROWING COMMUNITY OF

FAITH THAT WELCOMES PEOPLE TO THE LIVING PRESENCE OF JESUS CHRIST. AS

DISCIPLES SENT TO TRANSFORM THE WORLD, WE COMMIT TO WORSHIP, GROW, SERVE,

CONNECT, AND GIVE. This is how we can all live out service:

Saint Joseph Parish… values and recognizes you as

having unique gifts for the service of God and others.

gives you the opportunity to use your God given talents to help others and make the world a better place.

As parishioners, we… follow Christ’s example and serve

God and one another. commit to service in the parish

each year. In this way, we give witness that the Church is the hands and feet of Jesus in the world.

Recognize each other’s gifts, and invite each other to use them for the Kingdom of God.

How is God calling you to serve the Christ who is present in other people with those special gifts you possess? And when you serve, are you serving the presence of Christ in others WITH GREAT LOVE?

Stewardship Prayer My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is.

It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.

It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver.

It will bring others into worship, if I invite and bring them in. It will be a place of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity and mercy, if I, who make it what it is,

am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task

of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Amen.

Congratulations to our students who participated in the National H i s t o r y Day Regional Finals at Messiah College. Bailey T., Olivia V., and Amy B. will advance to the State Competition which is scheduled for May at Carlisle High School. We finished Week 2 of ensuring that learning continues at home!

That Man is You continues this week with a special online format. No virus is going to keep us down! If you are registered for the program, you will receive a n e m a i l w i t h

instructions to join us. If you would like to try a contemporary men’s program that enables you to embrace your true identity as a son of the Father and faith leader in your family, see the Men’s Formation tab on the parish website for instructions. We start at 6:15, on Saturday mornings. This week, we continue our Lenten program as we discuss the Depths of the Knowledge of God. Contact Tony Devlin at [email protected] for information.

Welcome to Saint Joseph Parish! March 29, 2020 www.stjosephmech.org Fifth Sunday of Lent

“Pray Over Panic.” I went running last Sunday through Mechanicsburg and saw a ton of sidewalk chalk art. Hopefully some was on our parishioners’ walks (if so, we have some young Picassos in our midst!). The art included lots of encouraging words for our unprecedentedly confusing times, including this one, which was awesome, even if a bit misspelled: “Kindness maks a difference: Jesus will stop the vires and heal every disez.” It is so awesome that children have such hope. Perhaps they can transfer it to us adults! But my favorite was written in five different colors and across three different sidewalk sections. It was huge and colorful. It read, “Pray over Panic.” Wow. A simple message, but one so difficult to absorb and live. That’s because we are so used to controlling events. As Americans, we believe that we are in complete command of everything. We usually are, thanks to this great country we are blessed to live in. But this virus is much different. We are not in control. The numbers and graphs that are constantly shown are always a reminder that we cannot stop this unseen enemy in its tracks – at least not yet. This leads to great anxiety. For every sniffle we try to stifle, perhaps we wonder if we have “it.” Perhaps we worry about our jobs or our economic situations more now than we ever dreamed before. We have little control over this. That is why we must leave it all in God’s hands. To “Pray over Panic.” There is nothing our anxiety will do. But our prayers will allow us to see the bigger picture, to allow us to perhaps see what good can come out of this evil. That hope does not exist when we put ourselves in the middle. In short, to “Pray over Panic” means to leave this in the hands of the only power who has control over the situation: Our God and Savior, Jesus Christ. It does not mean that we will suddenly lose our anxieties, our fears, our anger, our sadness. But what prayer does is allows us to see that the world is not on our shoulders at all: It’s on His. We cannot solve it, so let’s take that burden off our shoulders and give it to Him. To “Pray over Panic” means to pray with our whole selves. When we pray, we must tell God how we truly feel. Sometimes I’ll begin a prayer and I just don’t feel like praying. It’s probably because that prayer does not match what I want to tell God. Be honest in prayer, giving him our anxieties, our hurts, our fears. Even if we’re angry, don’t be afraid to give that to him, either. He can handle it. The very fact you are talking to Him is proof that you acknowledge that He exists and that He is Lord! Prayer doesn’t remove panic, or anxiety, but what it will do is take the pressure off of yourself and realize that there’s a greater power than us in charge. Thank God for that! May God bless you all. Father Sahd

Prayer to Our Lady Imploring Her Protection

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you

participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman

People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and

feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to

the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the

Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of

God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test –

and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Please pray for all who have asked for our prayers, especially those recently added: all those affected by the COVID-19 virus and all caregivers. The entire list can be found on our website: www.stjosephmech.org.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, please help those in need.
