Purpose of Justification—to Obtain Sanctification

• Justification means the saving of a soul from perdition, that he may obtain sanctification, and through sanctification, the life of heaven. Justification means that the conscience, purged from dead works, is placed where it can receive the blessings of sanctification (MS 113, 1902). {7BC 908.15}

Empowered to be obedient even in times of trials

• Satan represents God's law of love as a law of selfishness. He declares that it is impossible for us to obey its precepts. The fall of our first parents, with all the woe that has resulted, he charges upon the Creator, leading men to look upon God as the author of sin, and suffering, and death. Jesus was to unveil this deception…

• …As one of us He was to give an example of obedience. For this He took upon Himself our nature, and passed through our experiences. "In all things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren." Hebrews 2:17. If we had to bear anything which Jesus did not endure, then upon this point Satan would represent the power of God as insufficient for us…

• …Therefore Jesus was "in all points tempted like as we are." Hebrews 4:15. He endured every trial to which we are subject. And He exercised in His own behalf no power that is not freely offered to us. As man, He met temptation, and overcame in the strength given Him from God…

• …He says, "I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy law is within My heart." Psalm 40:8. As He went about doing good, and healing all who were afflicted by Satan, He made plain to men the character of God's law and the nature of His service. His life testifies that it is possible for us also to obey the law of God. {DA 24.2}

The time of Sanctification, the trial of faith

• 1. The new life from Christ.• 2. Following the example of Christ.• 3. The strength to obey from God.• 4. The delight of obedience.• 5. The victory over temptation.• 6. God’s law is vindicated.• 7. Character is sealed.

CHRIST, OUR DAILY GROWTH—IN THE HOLY PLACE, OUR HELPER IN THE TRIAL OF FAITH

• The High Priest daily work in the holy place was to trim the lamp and burn incense upon the altar of incense. Exo 30:7,8.

• The High priest set (the fresh) showbread every Sabbath (as part of the continual or daily offering) and the priests partake (the old batch) in the holy place. Exo 25:30; Lev 24:8;1 Chro 9:32

1. The showbread—DAILY BREAD

• Jesus, the bread from heaven—John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

• The word of God -–Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

• Jesus, the Word of God. See John 1:1-3.

• The body of Christ –Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

The Scriptures—Our Daily Bread for Daily Growth

• The Scriptures are the great agency in the transformation of character. . . . If studied and obeyed, the Word of God works in the heart, subduing every unholy attribute. {FLB 116.7}

Note: A. The Scriptures are for our growth into maturity or perfection. See 2 Tim 3:16,17 (Col 1:28)Ep 4:12,13 For unity in faith, knowledge of the Son, and to reach the maturity of Christ’s character or life in us (See Phil 3:8-15).

2. The 7 Candlesticks—OUR DAILY WITNESS

• The seven churches –Revelation 1:20 ... and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

• Oil in the lamp + fire in the wick = light (Holy Spirit + purifying work = good work) (Zech 4:6,12+Mal 3:2,3 (Isa 6:6,7) =Mat 5:13-15)

• Light, the life in Christ –John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men..

• Christ, the light –John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

• You are the light --Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid…16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

• Note: Christ’s life in you, which make you the light.

3. The altar of incense—DAILY PRAYER

• Smoke of incense with the prayer of the saints – Revelation 8:4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.

• Psalms 141:2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

• Frankincense + coal of fire = smoke or sweet odour (prayer + purifying work = prayer of the righteous or prayer with the righteousness of Christ. (Ps 141:2+Isa 6:6,7=Prov 15:29)

Sanctification, a Lifetime—daily process of growth

• True sanctification comes through the working out of the principle of love. "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." 1 John 4:16. The life of him in whose heart Christ abides, will reveal practical godliness. The character will be purified, elevated, ennobled, and glorified. Pure doctrine will blend with works of righteousness; heavenly precepts will mingle with holy practices. {AA 560.1}

• Sanctification is not the work of a moment, an hour, a day, but of a lifetime. It is not gained by a happy flight of feeling, but is the result of constantly dying to sin, and constantly living for Christ. Wrongs cannot be righted nor reformations wrought in the character by feeble, intermittent efforts. It is only by long, persevering effort, sore discipline, and stern conflict, that we shall overcome. {FLB 116.5}

• It {sanctification} is not merely a theory, an emotion, or a form of words, but a living, active principle, entering into the everyday life. It requires that our habits of eating, drinking, and dressing be such as to secure the preservation of physical, mental, and moral health, that we may present to the Lord our bodies--not an offering corrupted by wrong habits but--"a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God." {FLB 116.6}

Purpose of daily sanctification—Perfection or maturity

• True sanctification means perfect love, perfect obedience, perfect conformity to the will of God. We are to be sanctified to God through obedience to the truth. Our conscience must be purged from dead works to serve the living God. We are not yet perfect; but it is our privilege to cut away from the entanglements of self and sin, and advance to perfection. Great possibilities, high and holy attainments, are placed within the reach of all. {AA 565.1}

• The Scriptures plainly show that the work of sanctification is progressive. When in conversion the sinner finds peace with God through the blood of the atonement, the Christian life has but just begun. Now he is to "go on unto perfection;" to grow up "unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ." Says the apostle Paul: "This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." [PHIL. 3:13, 14.]…

• … And Peter sets before us the steps by which Bible sanctification is to be attained: "Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. . . . If ye do these things, ye shall never fall." [2 PET. 1:5-10.] {GC88 470.1}

The way to understanding

• God intends that even in this life the truths of His Word shall be ever unfolding to His people. There is only one way in which this knowledge can be obtained…

• … We can attain to an understanding of God's Word only through the illumination of that Spirit by which the Word was given. "The things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God;" "for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God" (1 Corinthians 2:11, 10). {AG 199.3}
