HERE TO MAKE WATERGARDENING A REALITY...The more information you can gather before you begin buildingyour pond, the more enjoyable the whole process becomes. A visitto any of our centres will allow you to see how many variations areavailable, discuss the advantages of each, and choose one thatwill best suit your needs. Whichever you decide to build, rememberthat they are difficult to move, so choose its position well, anddesign wisely!
POSITIONINGSome people prefer to have the pond close to a viewing area nearto the house while others prefer to keep it further down the garden,as a separate "room" to visit when there is time to relax.
Either way, try and position the pond so that it is sheltered from coldprevailing winds and receives sun light for at least half the day, asthis encourages the growth and flowering of most water plants -especially lilies.
Where possible, avoidoverhanging trees as theirleaves and blossom will fall in and need to be removedperiodically. Particular attention should be paid to any willow, elder,oak, yew, poplars and laburnums trees in the area as their leavesare highly toxic. Additionally this will avoid tree roots piercing thepond membrane.
Any deep excavations next to structures such as walls should not berisked as ground disturbance could cause foundations and walls tosubside.
Although an electricity supply can be added at a later date, it willcause less disturbance to the surrounding area if it is incorporated inthe initial building of the pond.
Other factors to consider include avoiding areas where surfacewater tends to collect, or the presence of a high water table, as thiswater could easily push up under pond liners causing a number ofmajor problems. Also avoiding these areas will reduce the risk of anypollutants being washed into the pond during heavy rain.
SHAPEThe shape and surfacearea are generally down topersonal preferences but it isalways best to create a shapethat allows the “natural” flow ofwater.
Using complex shapes should be avoided to alleviate constructiondifficulties and create less folding and wastage of pond liner.
It’s always a good idea to take a rope or hose and spend timecreating the shape of the pond youdesire. It may be that a pre-formedpond will fit your requirements.
Alternatively, measurements can betaken to calculate the correct linersize. Using the simple step-by-stepguides throughout this manual willhelp you to plan and budget theamount of materials you will require.
If you are considering a stream orwaterfall, it is wise to keep it inproportion to the size of the pond, as a small pond with a largewaterfall could suffer problems such as turbulent water flow orvarying water levels when the pumps are switched on. These factorsare undesirable for a balanced pond with plants and fish, but wouldbe fine if you only wish to create a waterfall feature where the pondacts purely as a reservoir.
DEPTHIdeally koi, ghost carp and other large fish need a depth of at least91 cm (3 feet) in the deepest part of the pond to allow these fish,which can easily grow to over 61 cm (2 feet) in length, to overwinter successfully.
Fish such as goldfish, shubunkins andsarasa comets can be housed insmaller ponds, with a minimumdepth of 46 cm (18 inches). It ishelpful in maintaining a healthy andbalanced pond to have at least40% of the pond area at themaximum desired depth. This willreduce the likelihood of temperaturefluctuations, which can encouragealgae growth and be harmful to fishhealth.
PLANTING AREASMarginal plants like to be positioned in shallow water around theedge of the pond. This means that the marginal shelves should beat least 23 cm (9") deep to allowsufficient depth for the plantingcontainers. It is useful to purchaseplanting baskets of different sizesbefore digging the pond to use astemplates to dig the shelves at theappropriate depth. Remember thatthe more shelves available, the moreplants can be used. Plants are themost important factor in creating anatural balance in the pond as theysoak up nutrients that would otherwiseencourage algae growth. Koi andother large carp can be destructiveto plants, therefore in pondsspecifically for Koi it is worth creating aseparate planting area that the fish are unable to access. Thesecan take the form of shallow water areas for marginal plants ormoist soil areas for bog plants.

3. CONCRETE CONSTRUCTIONThis is the least popular method as it can be more expensive thanother methods. Foundations must be solid andreinforced to prevent cracking if the subsoil shiftsduring the course of the year. Once rendered,the pool must be painted with at least twocoats of a purpose made pond paint.
1. FLEXIBLE LINERSLiners are the most popular and costeffective way of creating a garden pond.They are available in a wide range ofmaterials and sizes and allow you to make apond of any shape. Remember that themanufacturers guarantee does notinclude punctures -so it is worthtaking care to install correctly,using a good quality underlay.
2. PRE-FORMED POOLSPre-formed ponds are made out of plastic or fibreglass, and are available in a widerange of shapes and sizes. They are extremely durable, and are popular with many,because once installed they have a smooth surface without creases. Don't be misledinto buying one too small for your requirements - they look far bigger out ofthe ground than they do when they are installed. You will be able to seeexamples of pre-formed pools both out of the ground and installed atany of our centres, to give you an idea of the difference in scale.
S I T I N G P O N D S▲ Siting any ponds in areas prone to water logging or where there is a high water table must
be avoided due to the risk of damage. This can be avoided by having a fully or a partiallyraised pond.
▲ No sunken pond should be emptied if the ground is saturated with water. Ground water willfill the excavation from under the liner causing serious damage.
▲ Partially raised ponds should not be emptied below ground level in wet conditions, asabove.
▲ Raised Ponds should be safe to empty in most conditions.
▲ If emptying any pond ensure you drain the water well away from the pond. This will stop thedrained water running under the liner and causing damage.
▲ Damage caused by poor siting or external water pressure would not be covered by anywarranty.
▲ REMEMBER: - Should a liner or a preformed pool fail once it has been installed, theguarantee will only cover the replacement or repair of the liner, not the installation costs, soWorld of Water have made sure they only sell top quality liners. Care must be taken to avoidexposed liner showing above the water level once it has been installed. Not only does it lookunsightly, but also sunlight can slowly degrade it.

WILDLIFE & NATURALPONDSWildlife and nature pools have become increasinglypopular as we all become more aware of the environmentaround us and want to encourage wildlife into the garden.These ponds are not only truly beautiful, and veryeducational for children but you will also be helping theeco system of your whole garden... Did you know having apool encourages frogs and toads, which eat slugs! You willalso be visited by more birds and wildlife, some you maynot have seen before.
To ensure a good balance in these pools you will need toensure ample planting areas are built into the pool tosupport plants which in time will cover up to two thirds ofthe pool’s surface area. Although these ponds will supportsome fish stocks, it is important to avoid fish such as Koiand Orfe. Fish should also be introduced very gradually asthe plants grow and mature.
Over a period of time, as the new plants mature and,along with naturally occurring helpful bacteria, whichabsorb and digest any toxins left by fish and rotting organicwaste, the pool will begin to balance and the water toclear. It must be remembered that this could take up toeighteen months to achieve. However the end result canbe magnificent, attracting a host of wildlife along with asplendid display of aquatic plants.
Usually these ponds do not require full filtration asdescribed on the next page, however they will benefit frombeing circulated by a pump to maintain oxygen levels. Thisassists in the maintenance of a healthy balance of helpfulbacteria and avoids the water becoming stagnant.

FISH PONDS AND FILTRATION BASICSFor most people a pond is not complete until the addition of fish to add colourmovement and interest. However fish ponds do require some form of filtration. Filtration
does two important jobs. Firstly and most importantly it keeps the water healthy, andsecondly if the correct package is chosen it will keep the water clear!
Therefore when planning a fishpond the most important concerns is the installation andpositioning of the filter system.
The size and capacity of the filter will dependon the pond volume and the anticipated stocking
levels. To calculate your pond volume, refer to page 13and for advice on choosing the size and type of filterplease refer to page 32.
When deciding on a filter you will discover there are twopopular types 'gravity return' and ‘pressurised filters', eachwith their own benefits.
Gravity return filters, water is pumped into the filter andthen is returned to the pond under the force of gravity. Itis vital with gravity filters that the outlet is higher than thepoint of return, and for best results use a short length of rigid pipeslanting slightly downwards towards the pond as illustrated. This type offilter is generally cheaper than the pressurised models for smaller ponds.
Pressurised filters have become very popular recently. They will copewith small to medium sized garden ponds. Water ispumped through the filter under pressure allowing thewater to exit the filter wherever it is required. This allowsflexibility in positioning and overcomes the problem ofgravity return filters having to be higher than the watersurface. A number of these filters also come with easycleaning systems reducing maintenance time and effort.
For larger ponds and ponds specifically for koi we stocka wide range of the latest state of the art specialistpump or gravity feed filters. Different systems havedifferent advantages. Some use vortex chambers tosettle out solid waste, some use screenex to filter solids which can thenbe flushed to waste, and some even have indicator lights to show whenthe filter needs cleaning!
Pump fed koi filters, usually multi-chambered units combining many mediatypes from filter brushes to Japanesematting. The pump is positioned in the pondand the water is delivered into filter andreturns to the pool under gravity.
Gravity fed filters, water is drawn into thefilter by gravity but is pumped out by apump positioned in the last chamber of thefilter. The pipe work involved with these filters ismore complex. Please ask for advice fromone of our experts for further information.

RAISEDPONDSRaised ponds can be eithercompletely above ground oronly partially raised. Partiallyraised ponds are moresuitable for fish as they keepthe temperature of the watermore stable, particularlyduring the winter months.
Raised ponds often lookparticularly effective in formalgardens and have the addedbenefit of reducing theamount of excavationrequired and the quantity ofsoil needing to be removedfrom the site. Anotherimportant benefit is the safetyfactor provided by a raisedpond when considering children and wheelchair users, as well as making the pool more accessible and workablefor all.
Additional areas of consideration when planning a raisedpond include adequate strength of construction of the wallsand concealing a suitable filtration system. This is easier if thepond is only raised on three sidesand soil is banked behind on theother, allowing scope for awaterfall flowing from the outlet ofthe filter. Alternatively, consider apressurised filter, which can behidden in a chamber next to thepond or an “in pool” filter, whichare available for smaller ponds.Please seek advice or consult thefiltration section of this manual (seepage 32).
FORMAL PONDSFormal ponds either raised or at ground level, are ideal onpatios or lawned areas. Careful consideration should betaken in the design stages when choosing your edgingmethod. When edging with slabs, it is advisable to positionthe slabs before excavation to create your pool template.This will also limit the number of slabs which require cutting.Crazy paving can provide an easy but attractive alternativeespecially on pools withcurved edges. It is alsopossible to purchase a“round circle” of slabs frompaving suppliers, whichcould create a perfectedge for a round pond!
Should you desire a heavystone fountain in the pool,which looks effective inmany formal situations, itmay be necessary to form aconcrete footing in the baseof the excavation to supportthe weight of the fountainand its base before installingthe liner.

PEBBLES… ROCK POOLSThe use of pebbles and gravel in gardens is very popular and this is no exceptionwhen it comes to water gardens, with the glistening wet stones adding anotherdimension to your creation. The photograph shows the result of using gravel andpebbles combined with planting and a beautiful feature, with water bubblinggently from it.
Plants can be placed in suitable pots straight into the gravel, or soil pockets can behidden under the gravel so that the plants are not restricted in growth. The pumpand hoses can be hidden under stones. Remember the pump should be housed inan accessible reservoir chamber as illustrated. BRIDGES, STEPPING STONES & JETTIES Sometimes what really makes a pond impressive is one or two features that are unusual.Why not incorporate a bridge or some stepping stones, or even build a small jetty.
Thoughts about such a feature needs to be put in at the planning stage as some ofthese features will need extra footings (support) under the pond liner. This will mean thatall the weight will be taken by a concrete pad under the liner avoiding any chance ofsubsidence. Even small bridges should have concrete bases on either side of the pondto sit on firmly.
CONSTRUCTION TIPS1 When constructing bridges, jetties or stepping
stones you will need a footing under the liner. 2 After you have excavated your pool, work out
where you will need the footings.3 Dig out another 15cm deep area the size of the
stepping stone, fountain base or about 45cmsquare for a jetty support, carefully calculatingthe position of the footing.
4 Fill and level these holes with concrete (3sand/gravel to 1 cement).
5 Leave for at least 24 hours before placingunderlay and liner on top. (Protect from frostwhile cement sets)
6 Position another piece of underlay above thepond liner and footings.
7 Build up with brickwork, for stepping-stonestake the brickwork up to water surface level,and then place your stepping stone on top.
8 With a jetty you will only require enough bricksto brace the upright wooden leg.
9 For fountain plinths, take the brickwork up toabout 15cm below the water surface level andplace a slab for the fountain to sit on. This willallow only the feature to be visible.

Following these basic tips will assist you in ensuring your pond is installed level. This avoidsexposed pond lining, protecting it from sunlight damage, as well as making your pond lookmore attractive.
PRE-FORMED PONDSAfter excavation, cover the base of the hole with about 5cm of sand and level out, positionthe pond on the sand and place a spirit level across the top lips of the pond, reposition andadd sand as necessary to achieve a level pond. Gradually fill the pond while back filling thesides. Do check manufacturer's instructions for specific installation information.
LINER POOLSOnce your pond is excavated you need to consider the edging method you're going touse.
For a basic or wildlife pool edge, simply knock a stake into the centre of the excavation (Thestake will need to be at least 15cm deeper than the pool, so when it's knocked into the soil it
won't move). Drive the stake in until the top isat the desired finished pool level.
Now simply position a length ofstraight timber across from the stake to the side.Position a spirit level on the straight timber. Thenwork your way around the pond removing orbuilding up the edge, creating a perfect level allthe way around.
Should you wish to build a more complexedging, you will need to lay footings. These mustbe laid level and at least 10-15cm deep.
To achieve this, firstly position a central stake as above,but this time the top should be at the finished level of the
footing. Now take your straight (bridging) timber from the central stake to where the footing is going tobe laid on the side. Take a peg approx. 30cm long and partiallyknock it into the soil. Then place the bridging timberacross and check the level and if required continue toknock the peg in further until the bridging timber islevel. Carry this on around the pool placing pegsevery 50-100cm apart. Once completed ensureall the pegs are at least 10-15cm proud of thesoil, if necessary remove some more soilaround the pegs.
Once these pegs are all in position,simply lay the footings to the top ofthe peg and this will leave you aperfect level footing all round yourpool.
Note: With all ponds, you must not placeheavy edging materials around the pondfor at least a week, to allow the pond tosettle.

How to ensure the top edge is level all the way round
HOWEVER much planning goes into creating apond, poor edging can spoil the finished effectand look unsightly, as well aspossibly leaving liners exposed todirect sunlight. This can cause theliner to perish, hence shorteningits life expectancy and allowing itto become more vulnerable toaccidental damage.

POOL EDGINGDecide on edging methodbefore startingexcavation.Footings are essential formost edging, use ampleconcrete and a strong 3/1sand cement mix. Where the liner may comein contact with thefootings or wallingsandwich the liner withunderlay for protection. Any cement work whichwill come into contact withwater, should be treatedto neutralise the lime.(Please ask in store foradvice)Hide ducting for all cablesand pipes into the edging,a couple of spare ductscould be also very usefulin the future. Any cement work, whichfalls into the pool duringconstruction, must beremoved.Always do a completewater change a few daysafter any cement work ona new pond beforeintroducing any plant orfish life.
Are you on the level?
Pipework should be positioned so it is accessible, while being buried to avoiddamage and looking unsightly. (Pipes will vary in strength - do not bury toodeep, as this may cause them to be crushed). It is strongly recommended notto concrete pipes in and if they need to go through or under pond edging orunder a path, it is advised to concrete in a larger conduit and then sleeve thehose through, allowing easier access for replacement or repairs. To achieve themaximum flow available from your equipment you should consider the shortestdesirable route for any hoses, while insuring the hose size is suitable for theequipment - usually at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) with mid range pumps.
When considering positioning of equipment, always consult the suppliersinstructions, and if required consult an expert for further advice. However somebasic rules should be applied:

NOW THIS ISIMPORTANT!Pictured below is a basic layout of apond, showing how the equipment,cables and hoses may be set out.
The electrics are extremely important andparticular care should be taken to use thecorrect equipment. Armoured cable whichshould be buried (with a warning tapeabove) is used to take the power from a 13amp source in the house or out building to asuitable junction switch box securely fixed aboveground level next to the pool. This supply must beprotected by an R.C.D. (Trip Switch) at the source of the cable before enteringthe garden. Most switch boxes are fused and care should be taken to ensurethe correct fuse ratings are used. Any cables from the junction box toequipment should then be protected in a buried conduit. With submersiblepumps this conduit should be taken under any edging and into the pond. Theconduit not only protects the cables from damage, children and wildlife, butalso will allow easier removal and reinstallation of equipment as necessary,without having to dig up channels or edging.

Not only do aquatic plants enhance the beautyof your pond, but they also play an importantrole in maintaining the balance of the pond andin keeping it clear. Plants absorb nutrients andreduce light levels in the water, which couldotherwise promote the growth of algae, whichcauses green water. Plants will also provideshelter for fish and natural material on which theymight spawn.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLANTS FORYOUR PONDIt is important in any pond or feature to have agood balance of plants that offer a variety ofcolour and foliage at different times of the yearfor your enjoyment, and the plants required for asuccessful ecosystem for the pond.
Research the plants you choose as you would forthe garden. All the plants at World of Water areclearly labelled to show the height they attain,their spread and the depth of water they prefer. Mature specimens can be seen inour show gardens and members of our staff will happily answer any questions.
You will find that some plants are very vigorous and are only suitable for larger ponds,and some slower growing plants are best suited for the smaller feature. However if youneed quick cover on any pond you can always add some fast growing, spreadingplants to offer shade. Once your chosen plants have matured simply remove them ortrim the excess back and transfer to the compost heap. By removing or trimming theplant, excess nutrients are being harvested from the pond, helping to keep the pondbalanced and healthy.
Always remember to take into account the potential height of the plant, as somegrasses and rushes can grow very tall and would obscure a pond if poorly positioned.

How to PlantAquatic Baskets General Rules
To avoid disappointment always use the correct soil and containers in your pond,as this will promote the growth and flowering of your plants.
Using general bedding compost could have potentially fatal effects on fish as ithas high fertiliser content designed for quick release. Aquatic compost has a slowrelease fertilizer, thus avoiding pollution, as the plants will absorb the nutrients asthey are released from the soil. The soil texture is also important; a heavy loam isbest as a peat-based soil could simply float away!
Aquatic baskets have been designed with mesh to help retain the soil. The use ofan additional hessian liner will further reduce any soil leaching. The hessian liner willrot in time but by then the root structure of the plant should hold the soil together.The roots will eventually growthrough the mesh, absorbingnatural nutrients from the pond.

BOG PLANTSBog plants are ideal for planting areas where the soil remains wet but notsubmerged for example in the shallow areas of a wildlife pond. It is worthremembering most marginal plants will happily grow in these conditions, but bogplants will not do well on marginal shelves. These plants will add more colour,extend the flowering season around the pond and look great next to thetraditional marginal plants
CARE & PLANTINGThese plants are ideally suited for planting directly into soil around the pondedge, maybe where the pond overflows, or in a purpose built bog gardenmade from surplus pond liner.

MARGINAL PLANTSAs the name suggests these plants grow along the poolside usually in aquatic plantingbaskets. These plants provide splashes of colour throughout the growing season. Certainplants, such as Veronica Beccabunga, will raft across the water offering shade for the fish,reducing sunlight levels and thus hindering the growth of algae. Many of the grasses areespecially useful for removing excess nutrients from the water and have a wide range ofvariegated foliage to give colour throughout the season. Some plants, such as CalthaPalustris are ideal for an early display of colour. There are also excellent spreading plantssuch as Mimulus, which will quickly fill the top of a basket, making it a suitable companionfor a tall plant, such as an attractive iris.
Careful thought should be put into the positioning of marginal plants, ideally placing thetall grasses, iris's and rushes at the back of the pond while keeping the plants which tend tospread and raft at the front of your display.
HOW TO PLANTThese plants are generally sold either as immatureplants in small pots or more mature plants in smallaquatic baskets. It is recommended to replant allthese into larger baskets. Plants such as tall Iris's andgrasses will need a deep large basket as they areprone to blowing over in the wind, and these deepbaskets will provide some counter balance against thewind and plenty of room for root growth. Spreadingand rafting plants can be planted into shallowerbaskets, but remember they will need plenty of roomfor growth, so it is always worth while replantingregularly to ensure the best possible display.
In wildlife pools it may be possible to plant directly into a pre-made planting area (SeeEdging a Pool). Should you wish to contain the growth of these plants in such an area itmay still be worth considering sinking the plant in a basket to limit it's spread.

WATER LILIESWater lilies are the most exquisite and colourful plants in the water garden and cangive months of pleasure during the summer. It is also important not to forget that theyplay an important part in a pond ecosystem by shading the pond surface during theheight of the summer. Other deepwater plants will also add interest and colour tosome of the deep pond areas. Water Hawthorn, which flowers in the spring andautumn, makes a perfect partner for lilies giving you months of foliage cover and abeautiful display
A wonderful selection of lilies can be seen in our stores. The Pygmaea varieties areideal for small ponds and features with their tiny leaves and delicate flowers. Where alarge amount of cover is desired a Nymphaea Alba or Attraction will offer aneconomic solution, with one plant throwing a large pad of leaves and plenty offlowers. There is a huge range of lilies to suit all tastes, from the wonderful deep red ofJames Brydon to the impressive double flowered pink M. W Gonnere.
HOW TO PLANTLilies need plenty of nutrition to thrive, and it is therefore important to replant them in asuitably large basket with fresh aquatic compost when they are first purchased. It isalso possible to purchase lily fertilizer tablets to slip into the basket to help promotegrowth and flowering, particularly in new, nutrient poor ponds.
When planting a Lily the basket should be a reasonable size for the plant, lined with ahessian or foam liner then part filled with soil. Place the Lily in the basket with the“crown” pointing upwards, and then fill the rest of the basket with soil ensuring the“eyes” are showing through. To finish off you will need to put some gravel on top tohold the soil down and to discourage fish from disturbing the lily. Don’t just drop theplant into the depths, you will need to soak the basket first and then very slowly lowerit down. Smaller and immature lilies may benefit from being positioned in shallowerwater to start with and gradually moved deeper over a couple of months. If you haveKoi in your pond you will need to put larger stones on the top of the basket and use ahardy variety of Lily. You would probably be best advised against putting a young Lilyinto an established Koi pond as mature fish will probably destroy the plant before ithas a chance to get established.

OXYGENATING PLANTSConsidered one of the most Important groups of plants in the pond. Anoxygenator is the term applied to a wide variety of fast growing plants.Originally so named because it was thought that they give out oxygenconstantly though like all plants they give out oxygen during the day and useit up at night. Their primary benefit in a pond is their ability to grow rapidly,using nutrients that would otherwise be used by algae such as blanketweed.By occasionally thinning the oxygenators in the pond, a good healthybalance can be maintained.
Aquatic and marginal plants can grow vigorously. When thinning they shouldbe disposed of carefully to avoid them colonizing and harming lakes, ponds,canals or natural waterways. Composting is considered the most suitableform of disposal.
HOW TO PLANTGenerally you will buy oxygenators in bunches. The best way to plant these isto anchor them in a pot with gravel and lower them into the water. Someoxygenators come in pots, such as the beautiful Water Violet. These are bestreplanted into larger baskets and lowered so the foliage is coming throughthe water surface.
FLOATING PLANTSA simple way to achieve extra shading. You will find a number of floatingplants available in our stores. It must be noted that a few of them will onlysurvive one season in this country as they are imported from warmerclimates, but they should spread during the summer making a goodinvestment. Alternatively there are some native floating plants such as thepopular Water Soldier, which will come back each year adding shade and cover to your pond.

1 Dig the hole to the required shapefor the liner, taking care to make thesides sloping rather than vertical. Tocreate planting areas for marginalplants leave steps from 20 cm to 40cm deep asrequired (asshown in theillustration).For aperfectfinish,ensure that the top edge of the pool islevel. This will make edging the pooleasier with minimal visible linerexposed.
2 Ensure the pool area is free fromsharp stones, place underlay on thebase andsides of theexcavationand thenplace theliner inposition.Should youneed totread on theliner removeshoes toavoidpiercing.Lightlyanchor the liner in position with bricksevenly distributed around the edge ofthe liner, not the excavation.
3 Run water into the pool gradually,at the same time pulling and tuckingthe liner into shape to ensure a neatfinish. You’ll notice that the liner willstretch at first, then as the weight ofwaterincreases,it willmould itselfto theshape ofthe sides.Fill the poolcompletely, checking that the liner fitsclosely all round. Leave overnight, toensure proper settlement of the liner.Trim off excess liner around the poolwith scissors or a knife, leaving 30cmoverlap for anchorage.
4 After a week you can completeyour pool by edging in stone, orpaving asdesired,allowing fora smalloverhangto hide theliner fromdirect sunlight. For a different effect, grass turf canbe used, which may overhang andtouchthe water.

INSTALLING A LOTUS PRE-FORMED POOL
1. Mark out the shape using a hose,rope or dry sand poured from a bottleto form an outline, allowing you to diga hole slightly larger than the pond.
2. The base of the hole must be flatand deep enough to allow for acovering of sand 2.5cm - 5cm (1”-2”)to protect the pool from stones andhelp when levelling.
3. Place the pool in the hole and adjustit until the top is completely level.Check frequently that it is levelthroughout installation.
4. Shovel the soil into the space aroundthe pond as you fill with water. Keepthe soil and pond water level the sameso that the pond doesn’t move whenthe soil is being compacted down.Make sure that the built-in shelves arealso supported with soil.
5. Leave the pond at this stage for atleast a week to allow the in-fill soil tosettle before edging the pond,planting, positioning waterfalls etc.
NOTESiting any ponds in areas prone to water logging or where there is a highwater table must be avoided due tothe risk of damage.
This can be avoided by having a fullyor a partially raised pond. Partiallyraised ponds must not be emptied ifthe ground is saturated with water.

Siting a pond in anarea prone to waterlogging or wherethere is a high watertable must beavoided due to therisk of damage. Thiscan be avoided byhaving a fully or apartially raised pond.Any buried or partburied pond must notbe emptied when theground is saturatedwith water.
1 Place the pond in the position you havechosen and mark the outline with a garden hose
or rope. Remove thepond and excavatethe hole 5cm widerand deeper than thepond dimensions.
2 Evenly line theexcavation withapproximately 5cmof damp sand.
3 Using a spirit levelcheck that the layerof sand covering thebottom of theexcavation is level.
4 Place the pondinto the preparedarea.
5 Gradually fill thepond with waterand at thesame time fill inthe gapsbetween thepond and theedge of theexcavation withsand and top soil, making sure the pondremains level.
IMPORTANT
It is important that a pond should be filled and allowed to settle for at least 7 days before any rocks or slabs are placed around the edge. This allows for any ground settlement beneath the pond due to the weight of water.

Installing a waterfall will add an extradimension to the beauty of your watergarden, as the falling water sparklesin the sunlight while you enjoy thedelightful relaxing sound oftumbling water.
HOW TO...There are many ways tocreate a waterfall or stream.Using one of the largeselection of pre-formedwaterfalls illustrated in thismanual and available fromWorld of Water is one easy andeffective method.
You will find ranges to suit all budgets,pool sizes, rock colour and type. Somecascade units look great on their own, oryou may decide to go for a selection of units,which interlock to create a complete stream!
INSTALLING A PRE FORMED WATERFALLBefore starting any waterfall project, consider the size of pump required as thehigher and wider the waterfall, the larger the pump needed. In simple termsapproximately 1,400Ltrs (300 gallons) per hour is required for a 15cm (6") wide fall.All pumps lose volume (flow) the higher you pump the water, so if using an existingpump check it's capacity. If planning to purchase a new pump, ensure it is ofadequate power for your waterfall. Check out our pump guide in this manual.
When installing pre-formed waterfalls it is always recommended to conceal apiece of pond liner under the units overlapping into the pond as this will catch anywater splash and return it to the pool. The feed hose that is installed should usuallybe at least 25mm (1 inch) in diameter, but do consult an expert for the correcthose for your pump as a small hose will seriously reduce the potential flow of anypump.
A firm base is required to avoidsubsidence. Positioning the units on about2cm of dry sand and cement mix will holdthe units in the desired position. To makeany new units look more rustic, it ispossible to use some heavygravel/cobbles and place trailing plantsaround the units. For further hints oninstallation, seek advice from one of ourexperts.

Dig out and step the slope as requiredleaving it a few cm’s deeper than therocks you're going to use.
Line area with underlay & a single linerensuring it overlaps the pond. Considerthe route for the supply hose.
Starting from the bottom, begin buildingyour waterfall, using flatter stones for thespill lips ensuring the facings are level.Sitting the front lip slightly higher than theback allows water to pool in each step.
Continue working up the waterfall,remembering to ensure there is plenty ofliner coming up each side of thewaterfall. It is usually possible to build thehose outlet into the top, however it is bestnot to cement this in immediately so itmay be adjusted after testing the flow.

ULTRA VIOLETCLARIFIERS –ELIMINATINGGREEN WATERUltra violet clarifiers areavailable as a standaloneunit to be added toexisting biological filtrationunits or more commonlythey are combined with a biologicalfilter.
An ultra violet clarifier is an electrical unitthrough which water is pumped before itenters the biological filter, and itspurpose is to eliminate green water andreduce harmful bacteria in the pond.
As the water is passed through the unit, itis subjected to high levels of U.V. light.This U.V. light causes the microscopicsingle cell algae to be clumpedtogether allowing them to be collectedand broken down by the biological filter,thus eliminating the problem of greenwater.
REMEMBER: CLEAR WATERISN’T ALWAYSHEALTHYWATER!Although theclarity of the waterwill improve after acouple of weeks of turning on your UltraViolet Clarifier, you must check the toxin(Ammonia and Nitrite) levels to makesure the biological filter is coping with allthe extra waste produced by thecoagulated algae.
Large fish such as ghost carp and koican cause murky water by stirring up thebottom of the pond. This murky watershould not be confused with suspendedalgae.
DO ALL PONDS NEEDFILTRATION?No. If you are intending not to have anyfish, or you’re creating a wildlife pondwith high plant stocks and just a few fishyou may choose not to have a filter, andtry to create a natural balance instead.
It is a relatively simple process but cantake a very long time to get a balancednitrogen cycle within your pond, hencewhy most people still opt for a filter ofsome kind.
The principle is very simple. You will needplenty of plants, probably covering twothirds of the pond area. These plants,along with naturally occurring helpfulbacteria in the pond, will then use anddigest any toxins left by fish and rottingorganic waste, hopefully providing agood natural balance and a clear pond.It is important to remember that theplants should be well established beforegradually introducing fish, and it couldtake at least eighteen months to createa naturally balanced pond.

Filtration Putting itsimply DIFFERENT TYPES OF
FILTERSThere are three common types of filter,mostly available with combined UltraViolet Clarifiers. It is important to bear inmind installation options beforepurchasing.
Gravity Return Filters. These filters arepump fed and gravity return. These willrequire a pump in the pond that feedsthe filter. Water will then simply passthrough the filter and return to the pondunder gravity. This means the filter outletmust be higher than the point at whichyou want the water to return.
Pressure Filters are ideal for small tomedium size pools and are directly fedfrom a pump in the pond. However sincethe filter is a sealed unit the water is stillunder pressure when leaving the filter,allowing much more flexibility in thepositioning of the unit.
Gravity Fed Filters are ideal for largerKoi ponds. They are complex units toinstall and expert advice is available inour stores.

There are two main types of successfulpond filtration. An ULTRA VIOLET filter killsgreen water to keep the water clear,while a BIOLOGICAL FILTER looks after thewater quality to keep the fish healthy andhappy. Most modern filters combinethese methods into one unit forconvenience and ease of installation.
BIOLOGICALFILTRATIONMost beginners believe a pond filterworks by removing physical dirt and it isthis which keeps the water sparklingclean.
In fact this is not the case, although asmall amount of suspended particles arestrained out by the biological filter.
A biological filter works like a minisewage system for the pond. In simpleterms the media within the filter creates ahuge surface area, which becomeshome to many millions of helpfulbacteria. It is vital to keep theseoxygenated by passing pond waterthrough the filter 24 hours a day.
These helpful bacteria break downinvisible toxins produced directly from thefish and the decaying of physical wastesuch as fish faeces, excess food ororganic material at the bottom of thepond. This is done by the helpful bacteriabreaking down the initial toxin Ammoniainto Nitrite. A different type of helpfulbacteria then breaks this dangerousNitrite down to Nitrate which then can beabsorbed by plants as they grow and isharmless to fish except in highconcentrations. The bigger the pond orthe more fish the larger the filter will needto be. Hence it is vital to purchase a filterwhich can easily cope with your pondvolume and anticipated fish stockinglevel.
Please always check the capacity ofyour chosen filter with a member of staff.
Some advanced filter systems can strainout more solids from the water, but it hasto be remembered that these still haveto be biologically broken down unlessphysically removed by flushing ordraining.
It is important to know when first startinga biological filter it can take up to sixweeks for helpful bacteria to colonisethe filter. During this period care shouldbe taken to keep feeding down and tomonitor your water quality regularly witha test kit.
REMEMBERREMEMBER:It is simply impossible
to have a filter toobig for a pond. Koi
ponds with such largefish should have thebiggest filters of all
MAINTENANCEBiological filter: Only clean the filtermedia as instructed by the manufactureror when absolutely necessary. It is usuallyobvious when they need cleaning byeither water flow reduction through apressurised filter or by some water passingover media in gravity filters.
When cleaning is required always rinsethe media in bucket of pond water ratherthan tap water, as tap water containschlorine that will kill the beneficialbacteria. Do not clean all the media atonce, but stagger cleaning to keep ahigh population of the helpful bacteria.
Bacterial supplements are now readilyavailable and can be used to boost theperformance of the filter during thecourse of the season. They are alsoparticularly useful to use when you havejust installed a new filter, or cleaned anestablished one.
Ultra Violet Clarifiers: Always isolate thepower supply before starting any workand never look directly at an illuminatedU.V. bulb. Consult the manufacturersinstructions for individual unitrequirements.
The U.V. bulb will generally need replacingafter six months work. When replacing thebulb, it is a good idea to changethe "O" rings and seals. Thequartz sleeve is very delicate, sohandle with care. Remove anyhard water residue or dirt fromthe Quartz sleeve as necessary.Drain and store in the winter ifnot being used.
WHICH ONE?All the filters in this guide have been giventhree different ratings for varyingconditions, as illustrated by the symbolsbelow. Follow these simple steps to findthe filter that suits your needs.
1. If you don’t know your pondvolume, refer to page 13.
2. Pick the symbol from below thatmost represents your pond &stocking level.
3. Study the different makes andtypes of filters on the followingpages and pick the type bestsuited to your needs.
4. Look down the column with thesymbol, which represents yourpond until you find one which easilyhandles your pond volume.
5. Always go up one model if it onlyjust copes with your pond volumeor your pond is in direct sunlight.Also remember fish grow andbreed!
Remember: the more fish in a pond, themore waste generated, and the morehelpful bacteria needed to break it down- therefore the bigger the filter the better.

TIPS ON INSTALLING A FILTERMOST filters have a gravity outlettherefore the outlet must be higher thanthe point of return. With gravity outlet filters, keep the returnpipe full bore, gently angled down and asshort as possible. To maximise water flow ensure thelargest possible inlet hose is used.Most top outlet filters will work better ifpartially buried keeping the sides tightaround the media when full of water.Always follow manufacturers instructionsfor individual model requirements.
TIPS ON RUNNING A FILTERFilters must run 24 hours a day (Certainlyfrom March to October). Pass your pond water through the filterat least every 1-2 hours. Regularly check pump pre-filter toensure good flow. Remember a filter will take weeks tobecome biologically active. Clear water does not mean healthywater. Test your water regularly. Use a bacterial supplement to start andimprove filter performance. Always clean filter material in a bucketof pond water not in tap water. Only clean media when flow is beinginhibited.Always test water and seek advice if fishsuddenly look lethargic or unwell.

The Filtoclear range of filters is a highly developed range of pressure filtersdesigned with ease of use and quality filtration in mind.
The pond water is pumped into a sealed filter unit creating a pressure of upto 0.5bar. This in turn means that water leaves the filter underpressure, allowing the water to be pushed up to awaterfall, unlike a conventional gravity return filter, whichmust always be positioned at the highest point of thesystem.

WHICH ONE?At World of Water you will find pumps of manydifferent types and sizes. We canbreak them down into three generalgroups as follows:

General Purpose Pumps: An all roundgarden pump designed to
operate fountains, waterfalls andeven filters simultaneously.
They usually comecomplete with
variousfountain jetsand mostnow havea foamlessprefilter forreducedmaintenance. This pump is perfect formost small to medium sized gardenponds. These pumps are ideal to be
used for fountains because the prefilterprotects the small holes in the fountain
head from constantly blocking. Howeverthe pre filter is still quite fine and does not
allow larger solids to pass through to the filter,which is beneficial with koi or in larger ponds.
Solid Handling: Designed to allow larger soft solids topass through making these pumps perfect for filtration as
they deliver waste straight to the filter. Also ideal for waterfalls as they rarely clogand need maintaining. Due to the design of these pumps they are not suitablefor running fountains. Many water gardeners will use one of these pumps tooperate their waterfall/filtration 24 hours a day and use a general purpose pumpto operate a fountain which can be switched off when not required.

Add life...HOW MANY FISH?All ponds will vary in planting density and filtrationcapacity, which will affect possible stocking levels.However a good rule for initial stocking is 5cm or2in of fish per 0.1 sq. m (I sq. ft) of surface area.This will allow the fish room to grow, and rememberfish can breed quite quickly.
INTRODUCING FISHThe fish will be supplied in strong plastic bags. The fish will be quite happy in these bags for acouple of hours, but do keep them cool, quiet andshaded. See the tips on introducing fish below.
WHICH FISH ARE BESTSUITED?As with planting a pond it’s best to have a balanceof fish, with bottom, mid and surface feeders alldoing their own part in the pond's eco-system.Remember some fish such as koi grow very largeand are unsuitable in small ponds.

family they can vary in colour from a red to very light gold. Theywill breed easily producing black young that may turn gold laterin the right conditions. Goldfish can grow to 30cm but in normal

FEEDING YOUR FISH...In established pools, where there is a goodbalance of plants, wildlife and fish. There will beplenty of natural food and feeding acts as a supplement to their diet, and is enjoyable for the pondkeeper. However, in a pool which is heavily stocked or lacks plant life which attracts insects, feeding isvital to the fish’s well being. Feeding correctly ensures fish health, growth and ability to breed, and willallow the fish to build up enough reserves for the winter.
There are a number of different foods available, offering different protein levels, health and colourenhancer. Some of these foods are designed for winter feeding with lower protein levels containingwheatgerm, which is easily digestible, while other foods contain higher protein levelsand are only suitable for summer feeding when the fish can easily digest the food.
Care should be taken not to feed summer foods in colder conditions. This can haveextreme effects on the fish’s health and water quality when the temperature rises.
WHEN TO FEED YOUR FISHWhen the water temperature is between 5-8ºC in early spring and late autumn, andif the fish appear to be searching for food, you may feed your fish on a “winterfood”. In these climates, feeding once a day will be more than sufficient. Once thewater temperature reaches 8-10ºc feeding can be increased to two or three timesa day, using a high protein “summer food”.
Remember, any uneaten food should be removed after 5 minutes and the use of afeeding ring will make this easier. This ensures that excess food will not pollute thewater as it breaks down.

WATER QUALITYPoor water quality is the primary reason for most problems withfish health. In certain conditions it can also be responsible for algae blooms resultingin green water. However, it should be noted that, clear water is never a guarantee ofhealthy water and therefore there can be no substitute for regular testing of the waterin your pond. The pH level is the first basic test, ideally the results should show a pHlevel between 6 - 8, with 7 being perfect. A pH of over 8 is often caused by untreatedor excessive cement work.
Such ponds will often suffer more from algae problems and the fish will be more vulnerable to ulcers. Low pH values can becaused by use of acidic rocks or rotting vegetation and a lack of adequate filtration.
The other common tests are Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate.High levels of any of these toxins are usually associated withfiltration problems, immature ponds or inadequate planting.They can also be caused by over-feeding, over-stocking orrotting vegetation in the pond, when there is not enoughhelpful bacteria present to break these toxins down.
POND & FISH – COMMON PROBLEMSHealthy water means healthy fish!Once you have completed your pond, installed your filtration and introduced your fishand plants, it is important to monitor water quality regularly. Using a simple test kit, forthe “settling down” phase of your pond’s life, will bring any potentially harmful waterquality problems to light. It is during this initial period, which may vary from six weeks tothree months depending on the number of fish and plants,that the build up of beneficial bacteria takes place inboth the filter and the pond its self. These bacteriaare responsible for the breakdown of harmfultoxins that are produced from uneaten food,fish waste and any other dead anddecaying matter in the water. The level ofhelpful bacteria in a pond will need toincrease naturally as more fish are added,therefore it is very important not to overstock or over feed fish in your new pond.Once this “Nitrogen Cycle” (illustratedbelow) has become balanced, themajority of ponds should require littlemaintenance although occasional testingof the water for ammonia and nitrite isalways to be recommended.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY FISH To keep fish healthy, the key is keeping the water healthy.
Test the water regularly for toxins and pH levels.
Toxin levels can be kept at a minimum by filtration andcareful planting in the pond.
If water quality is consistently poor, it may be that the filterneeds upgrading.
It is essential to test the water before purchasing fish.Remember that established fish in the pond can becomeacclimatised to a gradual decrease in water quality over

MECHANICAL REMOVALIf you have a major blanket weed problem it is best to removeas much as possible by hand before starting any treatment. Ifthe worst of the blanket weed is not removed it will breakdownand pollute the water causing serious water quality problems,which could effect your pond inhabitants.

To collect theblanket weeds simplymove the wand in a circularmotion in the weed. To remove theweed from the wand simply retract the brushinto the handle, this action will conveniently separatethe blanket weed from the wand.

GREEN WATER... can be unsightly. It is caused by abloom of algae, which is feeding on all the excess nutrientscreated from fish faeces, uneaten food and rotting vegetation.
The long term cure... Installing a biological filter and Ultra VioletClarifier system and establishing a good selection of plants todigest the excess nutrients will both assist in the reduction.
Short term... If it is a new pond that has not yet balanced, there area number of products available, which will reduce green water. It isrecommended, if you have a planted pond, to use an environmentallyfriendly treatment that will not hinder the growth of your plants.
Even established ponds go green occasionally... In certain conditionsthese ponds can go green due to a number of reasons, such as high sunlightlevels in early spring before plants have established themselves. Either installan ultra violet clarifier or use treatments on a short-term basis.
BLANKET WEED... Is a real nuisance, like a green, slimy, candyfloss – it can rapidly take over should there be enough nutrients and sunlightfor it to thrive on. So again, a mature well-balanced pond will suffer less.
CONTROL...Powders, Liquid & Alternative TreatmentsThere are now non-algaecide and natural treatments, which are incrediblyeffective from barley straw, extract of barley straw to probiotic treatments,which add bacteria to the pond, then multiply and reduce blanket weed.
The traditional algaecides are still available, however these are moresuited to ponds and features, which have few or no plants. Ask at your local centre for the best solution for your water garden.

A beautifully presented display aquarium affords aglimpse into the fascinating underwater world, providing acaptivating centerpiece for any home, office or professionalenvironment. This brief guide provides helpful guidelines andinformation that will contribute to an easy, enjoyable experience.
Aquariums have many positive attributes that extend well beyondbeing decorative. Research has indicated a link betweenwatching an aquarium and the reduction of stress. Fish keepingcan also provide experiences and events that stimulate thelearning process. The dynamic underwater world will presentchanging situations where fish, and plants, grow, mature andreproduce, providing a living demonstration of various lifeprocesses.
It is recommended to consult various books and seek advicewhen deciding on and setting up an aquarium.
Tropical &MarineAquariums
AQUARIUM SET UP BASICSWEIGHTA filled, complete aquarium set-up will weigh approximately1 Kg per litre. The use of a proper aquarium cabinet orstand. With very large aquariums you may need to considerfloor strength, however this is usually not a concern with moststandard aquariums available. Placing aquariums on abookshelf, dresser, or other household furniture is generallynot recommended.
SIZEThe size of aquarium is often limited to the space available.In general, select the largest size of aquarium that space,location and budget will allow. This will provide manybenefits, such as a more stable environment, greater choiceof fish and plants and an enhanced aesthetic value.
LOCATIONPlace the aquarium away from sources which will influencetemperature (radiators, fireplaces, windows), create vibration(high traffic areas) and allow light entry (windows, sky lights).A convenient power point is important for heater, lightingand filtration components. Under no circumstances shouldany household electrical appliances be placed under or inclose proximity to your aquarium.
PREPARATIONGently wipe down the new aquarium using wet filter wool ora clean cloth and rinse with luke warm water to cleanbefore filling. Never use acommercial glass cleaner,detergent or chemicalcleanser to clean inner orouter aquarium glass.Never use a bucket thathas been exposed tosoap, detergent or anychemical cleansers totransport water for youraquarium. A mildaquarium cleaner can beused to clean inner (emptyaquarium) or outer glasssurface

FILTRATIONEfficient filtration is a key component for aclean, healthy, thriving aquarium. Typicalstocking densities (in relation to watervolume) of fish and plants far exceed levelsone would ever find in nature. The biologicalwaste products emitted by aquariuminhabitants must be effectively removedand metabolised before they becometoxic. Aquarium filters are available invarious configurations and should providemechanical, biological and chemicalfiltration, as well as oxygenation.
HEATING Fish are "cold-blooded" and maintain thesame body temperature as theirenvironment. It is extremely important tomaintain constant temperatures. Suddenchanges can cause stress and lead todisease.
LIGHTINGFactors that influence the type and quantityof light required are: ● Size of aquarium ● Fish species and other aquatic inhabitants ● Plant life ● Aesthetics
Fluorescent lighting is an efficient, effectivechoice for many aquariums. It evenlyilluminates the full length of the aquariumand efficiently converts energy consumedinto light.
WATERWater is the most important and basic element inkeeping a healthy, successful aquarium. Youshould regularly test your aquarium water forAmmonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, ph and if required waterhardness.
When first setting up an aquarium and wheneverpartial water changes are conducted, alwaystreat the water with a general “safe water”treatment to make it safe for fish.
FILTRATION TYPESInternal/Built-inProbably the most convenient filtrationsystem, as it is all housed in theaquarium easing maintenance problemsassociated with external and undergravel filters. A number of aquariums arenow sold with suitably sized filters fitted.
Under gravel Water is drawn down through the graveland up a riser pipe. The gravel bedbecomes the filter media hosting thenitrifying bacteria.
Under gravel filters can be operated witheither a power-head or an air pump.
ExternalExternal filters are popular with the seriousfish keeper as they can offer increasedfiltration capacity. However care should betaken with hose connections andmaintenance to avoid water escaping.
PLANTS Most fresh water aquariums can be set up with live plantsand whenever possible, it is recommended to do so. Someof the benefits of live plants are that they: ● Supplement filtration - they absorb ammonium, nitrates, and
phosphates, and even assimilate other undesirablesubstances from aquarium water
● Produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide when theaquarium is illuminated
● Provide natural shelter for fish, thereby reducing stress andsupporting natural behaviour. Plants also provide hidingplaces for baby fish and for species that are being harassedby other inhabitants
● Provide the main decoration feature of aquariums and supplya dynamic element to the aquarium as they grow
Patience is necessary when first stocking an aquarium. It isvery tempting to fully stock a beautifully set up aquarium,but it is not advisable. Purchasing a small group of fishevery two weeks will serve to gradually load the systemand allow essential bacteria the time required to multiplyand establish, biologically converting toxic nitrogenouscompounds produced by fish. In a new fresh wateraquarium, a gradual build up of fish to achieve 2 cm offish per 4.5 Lts is recommended. Remember, fish grow.
Transport new fish as soon as possible after purchase toavoid stress and temperature change. The following stepsare recommended to provide a stress-free introduction.
Turn off the aquarium lights during the acclimation period.Float the bag in the aquarium for approximately 20minutes to equalise water temperatures.
Open the bag and gently pour in some aquarium water(approximately 1/3 the bag volume), wait 10 minutes.Repeat this water introduction twice at the same interval.
Carefully net the fish out of the bag and place them inthe aquarium. Dispose of the water in the bag, do notrelease this water into the aquarium.
If the newly introduced specimens are the only fish in theaquarium, wait 24 hours before initial feeding.
FISH CARE Observation and daily verification of aquarium inhabitantsis an important preventative measure. A quick daily checkwill reveal any problems before they become serious.specimens that are hiding and/or exhibiting torn ordamaged body parts could indicate fighting andterritorial disputes. Early recognition and diagnosis of anyabnormalities or problems will allow timely treatment andmuch better chances of success.

After power failures, ensure that all equipment is workingproperly. Observe fish carefully, temperature variationswill stress them.
Use timers for lighting. Regular illumination periods areimportant for fish and plants.
If a medication has been used, after the treatment iscomplete, perform additional water changes anduse carbon to remove residual traces. Test water.
Supply regular feedings of various quality foods.

MAINTENANCEAquarium maintenance is an essential regular activity that provides astable, healthy environment for fish and plants. The key to an effectiveprogram is to fulfil basic, simple tasks which, when performed on aregular basis, take very little time and result in a clean, thriving aquariumdisplay. Ongoing biological processes can deplete water of essentialingredients and cause nitrate accumulation and other non-desirablesubstances. Most expert aquarists will agree that regular partial waterchanges represent a key element in fish health and condition. Alwaysensure that the replacement water has been treated and is the sametemperature as the aquarium.
The following list serves as a general guide to maintaining a stableaquatic environment. Variations in percentage and frequency can existdue to stocking density and types of livestock kept.
HEALTH CAREMost living organisms can suffer illness at one time oranother. The most effective way to deal with this realityis to prevent, rather than wait for a possible problem.The consequences of having to treat a stockedaquarium with medication can be stressful anddamaging in itself. Many plants, fish and helpfulbacteria can suffer as a result of using medication. The following list provides general points that supportdisease prevention:
Choose only healthy fish, avoid purchases fromaquariums containing sick fish.
Purchase fish in limited groups, slowly building fishpopulations.
Consider a quarantine aquarium. This will allowobservation and preventative treatments beforeexposing new fish to established aquarium inhabitants.
Follow proper acclimatization of new fish
Always condition new water properly. Chlorine,chloramine, and metals are damaging to aquariuminhabitants.
Perform basic water tests and maintenance on aregular basis.
MAINTENANCE TIPS ● Never change more than 40% of aquarium water at a time.● Never empty the entire aquarium to clean it. This causes undue
stress on fish and will disturb the biological balance of youraquarium.
● Only change half of your filter media at a time, to retain theestablished biological balance.
● NEVER use soap or any detergent on your aquarium or anyproducts used in or around your aquarium.
● When cleaning the inside glass of your aquarium, avoid pickingup pieces of gravel, as this will scratch the glass.
● Limit the amount of times you put your hands in the water. Oilsand films may cause stress in fish. It is preferable to use theMulti-Tool.
DAILY ● Observe all aquarium inhabitants. Perform a quick visual check
to ensure that there is no disease, injury, and/or abnormalbehaviour.
● Verify temperature and confirm that all support equipment isfunctioning correctly (filters, heaters, lighting, etc.).
● Remove any dead fish, plants, or obvious debris (such as plantleaves attached to intake strainer of filter).
WEEKLY ● Perform a partial water change, 5 to 10 percent is
recommended. Use a gravel washer to extract trapped wastefrom the gravel. Partial water changes on a regular basis willprovide stable water quality and maintain ideal conditions.
● Clean fluorescent tube(s) and fixture. This will maintainconsistent light levels.
● Clean inner and outer glass surfaces. This will eliminate anyalgae accumulation and ensure full viewing pleasure.
● Test water. This is important particularly for reef and plantedaquariums.
MONTHLY● Perform filter maintenance (preventative maintenance of
moving parts, such as the impeller). Replace filter media as permanufacturer's recommendations and in accordance with testkit results.
● Check supplies, food, water conditioners and all other regularlyused items.
