President’s ColumnFran Goldman

It’s that time of the year, the auto transports are loading up the cars, which tells us that the season is over and summer is just around the corner. Many of our friends are leaving to join their families up north. On a personal level, as I look at our congregation on Shabbos morning, I will miss seeing the many faces, new friends and old friends, who sit in their assigned seats every week. I wish all our snow flakes and snowbirds, a wonderful, healthy summer and, speaking on behalf our our congregation, we look forward to greeting you upon you return, in the fall, to resume life at TAS. We are so fortunate to have an all year ’round active synagogue. Lifelong learning under the auspices of Larry Feinberg continues its lecture series with a new May/June catalog. Please come and partake in the many activities that TAS provides, Hebrew conversation, beginners Hebrew, yoga, book club, bridge and spiritual moving lectures by our Rabbi. This and more is here at TAS for you...our members. Celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut, Monday, May 1st at 7:00 P.M. Join us for an evening of Israel flag waving and joyous song with Israeli singer, Ron Dagan. “Anshei After Dark” has its season finale Wednesday, May 10th, 7:00 P.M. The scheduled performer is award winning, Andrea Garafolo, whose “Golden Voice” has made him the beneficiary of rave reviews. This is a performance not to be missed. Many of our members have seen him before to rave reviews. TAS member, Mauricio Arenzon said, “We paid $40 per ticket at Valencia Cove it was worth every penny this is your real deal.” You can purchase your tickets at the ticket office. Reserved seats are $15.00. General admission is $10.00. The price at the door is $15.00. Mark your calendar, celebrate the debut of our new “Sunday Summer Series” opening with singer, actor, entertainer Don Stansfield, Sunday, June 4th at 2:00. On April 24th, TAS held its annual Yom HaShoah observance, I want to thank Genia Kutner and Les Schwartz for co-chairing this moving and meaningful program. As the years pass there are less and less survivors to tell the unimaginable story of the demise of six million of our brothers and sisters. It is now up to the second and third-generation to make sure to tell the story over and over ...”NEVER FORGET...NEVER AGAIN.” In the March addition of AARP Bulletin the cover story headlines were as followed: “Live Longer! 50 Proven Ways To Add Years To Your Life.” Number “27” was most interesting....”attending religious services, once a week has shown to add between 4 to 14 years to life expectancy, according to researchers, who study blue zones.” For many years I have said that belonging to TAS adds to one’s longevity. Just look around at our active and vibrant members, some 100 years young or more. Invite a friend, a neighbor, a relative to see who we are...we are an amazing congregation.See you in shul...Shalom

Rabbi’s ColumnRabbi Raphael Adler

We are in the midst of our annual 49 day count down beginning at Passover and concluding with the festival of Shavuot. We bridge this seven week period between freedom and receiving the Torah, by blessing each new day with a ritual known as “Sefirat HaOmer.” At evening a sheaf of barley was waved in this unusual ceremony. While the reason for “Sefira” is not given, our rabbis offer a variety of insights to infuse the counting with meaning. Mindfulness: the daily blessing encourages us to realize that every single day of our life is in itself a blessing not to be taken for granted. Counting our blessings before we lie down to sleep is a great tool to keep us grateful. Despite all the troubles and disappointments that each person must endure, life is good and taking a moment to reflect on the pleasant and beautiful moments we experienced is an opportunity to focus on the positive, rather than the negative. Anticipation: When we have a goal to prepare for and look forward to, life becomes exciting and purposeful. Even as we celebrate Passover, we are directed to future happy occasions. For the Sefira, that special moment is the revelation on Mount Sinai. The individual awaiting a grandchild’s simcha in a few months, or some upcoming celebration has an added reason to get up each morning and meet the day. Knowing that there is bright sunshine beyond the clouds is a wonderful way to greet the morning. Growth: If we don’t learn something new, or help someone in need today, then why are we alive? Sefira, by enunciating the daily and weekly count, that is always growing, is understood by our rabbis as an encouragement to add a mitzvah, to master a new skill, to meet a new friend, to make this day really count. Ask yourself when you start the day, what will I accomplish, what will I begin, what memory will I create? Shavuot will soon be with us and the formal Sefira will conclude, but the blessings of mindfulness, anticipation and growth, are good habits to practice in our routine all year long. Shalom

Shalom! It seems that each day when you pick up a magazine or newspaper one of the topics that is frequently written about is “Brain Health.” In order to continue with this trend, I decided that I would link maintaining a healthy brain with being an active member of the TAS Sisterhood.Let’s look at how we can do this. One key ingredient is to maintain a sense of purpose - what better way to do this than to work with your colleagues in the Sisterhood, to support and foster the growth of our Temple. We can do this by recruiting new members and supporting the Sisterhood’s fundraising events, such as our day trips, card parties, etc and supporting the Judaica Shop. Another key, is to participate in religious and spiritual activities. Sign up to be one of our Torah readers for the 2018 Sisterhood Shabbot, or volunteer to participate in the service in some other way. This will provide you with a truly uplifting experience. Other keys to successful brain health are to be mentally active, to socialize and have fun, learn new things. You certainly can accomplish all of this by being active in the TAS Sisterhood. We are so lucky to have such wonderful women in the Sisterhood. Please connect with us, commit to joining a committee and you will be part of a caring community that is vital to the health of our synagogue. For Passover this year, the Sisterhood donated a Miriam’s Cup, to be used at our Temple seders. Temple Anshei Shalom has made much progress in becoming an egalitarian synagogue. This is one more step. A Miriam’s Cup is a ritual object that is placed on the seder table beside the Cup of Elijah. Miriam’s Cup is filled with water. This serves as a symbol of Miriam’s Well, which was the source of water for the Israelites in the desert. May continues to be a busy month for us. May 15th is our monthly meeting featuring Jean Grey - back by popular demand. As a reminder, beginning with this program, we will be charging $2.00 for each non-member. Tuesday, May 16th is our bus trip to Miami and the Cuban Synagogue. Our card party will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd. On July 26/27, Millie

Our wonderful gift shop is opened daily from 9 am to 12 pm for your shopping enjoyment.

Shalom Chaverim, as I write this article we are in the ending days of Pesach. I hope you all had a wonderful Chag, with family and friends. Joan and I went to New Jersey to have Seders with our children and our grand children. What a delight that was. We returned on Thursday the third day of Pesach to beautiful warm Florida. Now that most of the snowbirds are gone, we are finding it more difficult to sustain our daily minions. This is a service that we maintain, so that if any member has a yahrtzeit, and he or she wants to say Kaddish, we have a minion for them. It is self-serving to make sure we have a minion in the morning and in the evening, as we will also need a minion during the year. After all, few of us are fortunate to have even one parent still with us. With that in mind, please make every effort to come to minion once or twice a week. Other than that, things are going along well. We have had a Bat Kohane and Bat Levi, take Aliyot on the Bima on Shabbot. We have had a woman Gabbai, and women Torah and Haftorah readers, the latter being a more common occurrence. We, at TAS, are entering a more modern age. Once again, I ask anyone, who wants an Aliyah, to contact me at 561-498-0102. Until, then Chag Shavouth, I hope to see you all on both Shabbatot and Shavouth.

RitualDavid Zimmer

Dear Congregants; A simple question: how do you feel? The answer has many consequences and ramifications for you personally. Studies have been done, and results published, by the American Medical Association, confirming that people who attend services more often actually have a better chance of staying alive in the long run. Those who attended services once a week saw their odds of dying decrease by 13 percent. Perhaps professionals could encourage attendance at services as a form of meaningful social participation. Isn’t decreasing depression in older people a wonderful goal that we can accomplish, and wouldn’t that lead to a better and healthier way of life? It appears that attending services affects many aspects of life.Shalom

Bravo, mazel tov and thank you to all who turned out Feb. 12 for the protest demanding that German insurance company Allianz, not be allowed to continue to sponsor the annual PGA golf tournament at Broken Sound Country Club. The company owes $2.5 billion in unpaid pre-WWII benefits to Holocaust survivors.

On April 24, State Representative Emily Slosberg, a TAS member who very actively supported the protest and its goals, announced in a press conference on the steps of Boca Raton City Hall that the contract will not be renewed.

Allianz Golf Sponsorship in BocaWill NOT Be Renewed!

by Jan SchwartzThe fight for survivor rights will continue in the halls of Congress where bi-partisan efforts are under way to allow survivors to sue in U.S. courts to receive unpaid benefits. Efforts also continue to compel Germany and German and Italian insurers to provide more aid to Holocaust survivors worldwide, half of whom live in poverty.

For a copy of the press release, email me at [email protected]. To support ongoing efforts, call or write Florida Senators Nelson and Rubio, who support this cause, and your local Congressman/woman.

How Can I Provide for TAS’s Future? A TAS legacy does just that. Many members have expressed a desire to join the TAS Legacy Circle but are worried that it is too complicated or expensive. The answer is Not True. If you are eager to join the TAS Legacy Circle, but are not ready to change your will now, your existing retirement plans might offer any easy alternative. Making TAS an after death beneficiary of your retirement plan (IRA, 401K, etc.) is an excellent solution. Such a commitment is easily executed. Just contact your plan administrator and complete a simple form changing your beneficiaries to include a partial distribution to charity. A charitable beneficiary designation (TAS) through your retirement plan is truly a Win-Win! The decision to join the TAS Legacy Circle should be inspired by your desire to provide for our Shul’s future.
