Pathway to Success — Putting Your Best Foot Forward

Before you know it you will have opportunities for leadership, volunteer experiences, mentoring, and

internships. The key to making the most of these opportunities lies in learning how to embrace opportunities

with poise and confidence. Come to this interactive session to learn how to create a positive first impression.

We will take an up close and personal look at dress, grooming, posture, attitude, communication and coping

with conflicts! This session will also feature basic table manners, which we will practice at lunch! In the

afternoon we will learn the basics about completing applications and interviewing.

This class has been taught at local, regional and state levels and past participants report that this class has

helped them:

Communicate better Resolve conflicts Ask for a teacher or coach recommendation

Apply for volunteer or paid opportunities Meet adults with ease Speak confidently

This program is open to all students currently in 7th grade or older.

Springville Superstars—Katherine Larson

August—The meeting of the Springville Superstars 4-

H Club was called to order by Megan Bakkum at 7:04

pm. The pledges where lead by the Oldenburg and

Lepke families. Katherine Larson did roll call and the

Secretary’s report. Megan Bakkum gave the

Treasurer’s report. Brandon Lee gave the Parent

Leader Federation Report. Julie Larson did the Club

Leader Update. Club plans for the 2011-12 4-H year

will take place in August and a suggestion sheet was

passed around for member ideas on community

service, fun, fund raising and meeting activities.

Under unfinished business, Julie Larson talked about

the Volunteer Orientation and our plans to offer this at

a club meeting. We also talked about painting at

Cornerstone Christian as a community service project.

The club should watch for an email on the date.

Katherine Larson talked about her trip to the

Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington DC.

Brianna Hall talked about the Area & State 4-H Dairy

Judging. Fair entries are to be turned in tonight. Julie

Larson talked about the 4-H Food Stand-we need

workers for Thursday afternoon and Saturday night. A

sign-up was passed around. Beth Lee will call the

families when fair entry passes and fair exhibitor tags

are ready to be picked up. The Oldenburg and Lepke

families have August treats, cans, and clean up.

Brianna Hall moved a motion to adjourn the meeting

and Jansen McClelland seconded it. The meeting was

adjourned at 7:26 pm. After the meeting, we had a

kickball game and before the meeting we made pie

crusts for our pies for the 4-H food stand. Each family

should bring one two-crusted pie during our shifts at

the 4-H food stand.

East Ridge Beavers—Jennifer Stiltner

August—We discussed our scheduled time at the 4-H

food stand at the fair and had a sign-up sheet for

working. Justin, Landon, and Killian talked about 4-H

camp. We voted to have a pizza party at our

September meeting. We will be decorating an exhibit

space at the fair and voted to spend up to $20 on

materials. We had a fair project show and tell. List of

upcoming 4-H events: Working at 4-H food stand at

the fair on September 15th, 2011 from 4:00-7:30 pm.

Walkathon in Chaseburg.

The Vernon County 4-H Leader Parent Federation is

looking for interested adults to serve as vice president

and treasurer for the 2012-2014 term which will begin

with the January 2012 meeting.

The purpose of the Federation is to:

a. Assist the Vernon County University Extension office

staff in planning, conducting and administering the 4-H

program in Vernon County.

b. Set policies and provide financial support for 4-H

activities, trips and programs.

c. To serve as an advisory body to County Extension

personnel with regard to the county 4-H program.

The Vice President role is a two year term, the first year

being a support to the President of the federation and the

second year to moving into the President role.

Duties include:

Filling in for executive officers that may not be able to

attend a meeting, including leading the Federation meeting

if the President is not able to attend.

Serve as chairman of the promotion committee.

Assist in providing 4-H officer training.

Please consider:

--Consistent attendance at the monthly 4-H Leader Parent

Federation Meetings (currently held third Wednesday

evening of the month at 7 p.m. Meetings last 1 –2 hours).

--Willingness to learn other officer roles.

--Provide leadership on the promotion committee and in

organizing 4-H club officer training.

The Treasurer position is a two year term.

Duties include:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records of the 4-

H Leader Parent Federation.

Pay bills and make deposits as authorized by the approved

annual budget.

Provide monthly written financial reports at all 4-H Leader

Parent Federation meetings, including committee balances.

Assist in preparation of annual budget.

Please Consider:

--Consistent attendance at the monthly 4-H Leader Parent

Federation Meetings (currently held third Wednesday

evening of the month at 7 p.m. Meetings last 1-2 hours).

--Checks and deposits need to be made weekly. This

requires a trip to and time at the Extension Office

--Accounting software, laptop and printer are provided

for this position.

--Attention to detail and accuracy are critical in this

position.

June 17, 2011 meeting minutes read -Joy Moser moved to accept- 2nd Joanne Hornby

Treasurers Report given ($12,524.16 checking bal. $48K investments)

There are ongoing adjustments with the new accounting format.

There will be a bylaw change allowing any Federation BOD to sign and approve checks in the absence of the

treasurer. Motion by Deb Primmer- 2nd from Ann Marie Elwing, Motion carries.

The monthly 4-H newsletter format was reviewed. A new booklet format was approved to start with the Oct.

Newsletter. Motion made by Forrest Krause- 2nd from Deb Primmer, motion passed.

The new 4-H Food Stand design was reviewed. Material bids will be solicited from Nelson Agri Center and

Nuzum Lumber and reviewed. Locating used kitchen equipment was discussed and more information will be

provided. Fund raising ideas were discussed for the food stand.

New Business

Upham Woods Capital Campaign to raise money form camp enhancements tabled to further date. Motion

from Joanne Hornby- 2nd Deb Primmer motion carries to table.

A committee of Tom Titel, Joanne Hornby and Jim Hawthorne was formed to recruit a Vice President and

Treasurer for 2012. The VP and Treasurers terms are 2 years with 10 meetings per year. This will be added

in the next newsletter along with the job descriptions. Deb Primmer made a motion 2nd, by Jim Hawthorne for

this committee. Motion carries.

Annual fund raising ideas were discussed and tabled. Joanne Hornby motion- 2nd Deb Primmer, carried.

Colleen Pulvermacher presented the Educators report. Tjark Satler enjoyed his internship and the vast

experience of opportunities given to him in Vernon County. A thank you letter will be sent to Tjark.

An overview of Terrific Tuesdays was given, reviewing the attendance and learning opportunities. More

adult volunteers and project leaders are needed for 2012.

Outpost Camp had a large attendance from Vernon County. A great experience was enjoyed by all. Betty

Nigh and Tony Siler were Chaperones.

There will be a Community Focus trip to Minneapolis in June 2012 with a cost share, more details to come.

A 4-H Youth Retreat will be held for 7th grade and up, Dec. at Chula Vista Resort, a one day workshop from

9am to 2:30. There will be a discount for rooms if you choose to stay.

New officer training will be the last Thursday and Friday in October, club leaders should reply with those

attending.

Art Fest will be held Sat. March 3, 2012. Snow date is Sat. March 17, 2012.

4-H Camp for 2012 will be July 29-31.

Project Guides and Handbooks are complete.

The Next meeting will be Sept. 21, 2011, 7pm at the gov 't services bldg.

Vice-President Jim Hawthorne called meeting to order at 4:35pm.

Pledges were recited.

New Business: Action on the 4-H food stand

Tim Rehbein talked on the future of the Vernon County 4-H Food Stand. Tim had drawings for the new food

stand. The plans for the new stand where done by Matt Mills. The reason for the special meeting was

because Mr. Lloyd Hardy the construction teacher at the Viroqua High School had asked for information on

the future of the food stand because his students only meet in the fall semester of school. Mr. Hardy’s class

will demo the old stand and then build the structure once the concrete is poured and plans have been approved.

He needed to know so he could set his schedule for the fall. What could be saved from the old stand and

auctioned off to raise money for the new food stand? They will ask Lloyd Hardy if anything could be saved.

Mr. Hardy won’t proceed until after our meeting on the 21st.

Tim has talked to various supply companies about the cost of new or good used equipment for the new

building.

We received information on:

Bill of Materials

Steel Roof

Concrete work – Lloyd would like professionals to do it

Water will be overhead instead of under the concrete

What is required from the state to be certified for the air exchange system? Would 2 screen doors at

each end be good enough for air exchange or would we have to have a system which would cost

$7,500. Tim will find out by next Fed meeting.

Building permits from the city

Fire Protection Hood may be required - Tim will find out by next Fed meeting

Hot water heater and plumbing

Electrician

Tom would like to see special meetings as a situation arises.

Joy moved to proceed with the demolition of the old food stand and Betty seconded. Motion carried

Joy was wondering about fund raising at the fair for the new food stand. Fundraising will begin after

everything is final. The front elevation drawing will be displayed at various areas of the fairgrounds.

Let the minutes reflect that this was unanimously agreed on to begin this after this Vernon County Fair 2011.

The food stand subcommittee will have everything together by the next meeting.

The foods stand committee: Betty, Cheryl, Deb, Tom, Jim Hawthorne and Mary Jo Bringe.

The concrete around the fair food stand is cracked. It was suggested to spray orange paint on all the raised

cracks so know one person will trip on these cracks and get hurt.

Next Federation Meeting will be on Wednesday, September 21, 2011

James W. Crowley 4-H Dairy Leadership State

Winner — Congratulations Jacob Leum!

Fifteen Wisconsin dairy youth received James W.

Crowley State 4-H Dairy Leadership Awards at the

2011 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. These youth were

rewarded for their outstanding dairy project work and

leadership ability. Each award winner will receive a

plaque provided by the James W. Crowley Dairy

Management and Extension Fund.

New in 2012! Southwest Education Leadership Trip

(SWEL) is an opportunity for older 4-H youth in the

surrounding nine counties. Here are the details:

Dates: Tuesday, July 24 through Friday, July 27, 2012

Focus: Tentative plans include travel (possibly by Amtrak)

to Minneapolis/St. Paul, lodging at a college campus,

community service, and visiting sites such as:

* Science Museum of Minnesota

* Mall of America

* Mpls Institute of Art

* Swing Dancing at the Caves

* Paddle Boat or Riverboat Cruise

Cost: Estimated cost $ 500-600 each

Apply today for these opportunities with a cover letter &

resume! Due by November 1st!

Partial funding for all award trips is generously provided

by the Vernon County 4-H Leader/Parent Federation.

Space Camp funding is $200.00 towards the cost of camp

for first timers. 4-H members returning to Space Camp may

be awarded partial funding.

In the case of financial need, additional funds are available

by contacting Colleen Pulvermacher,

4-H Youth Development Educator, (637-5276) for a

confidential discussion.

.State 4-H Horse Expo

Taylor Boardman, De Soto Strivers 4-

H club, represented Vernon County at the State

Horse Expo, which took place at the Wisconsin

State Fair grounds, September15th– September

18th. Taylor competed in the age group 12-13, and

reported there were a total of 160 horses that

competed just in the trail class! Taylor received 2

grand’s 2 reserves and 8 top tens over the course of

this competition with her horse Sir Quincy Zip and

educational events.

James W. Crowley 4-H Dairy Leadership Awards

The James W. Crowley 4-H Dairy Leadership Award program provides recognition to youth who have excelled in their dairy project. The James W. Crowley Dairy Management and Extension Fund is the sponsor of this award. We are pleased to name the award in honor and memory of James W. Crowley, longtime Extension Dairy Specialist and strong supporter of dairy youth projects. A special engraved medallion will be presented to the outstanding 4-H dairy project member in each county for their accomplishments in 2011. These medallions are provided by the Crowley Fund. County Award winners are eligible to compete for 15 state-wide awards. State winners will receive plaques and the top two youth in the state competition will each receive $500 awards for continuing their dairy education.

SELECTION Selection of the Leadership Award will be based on each county’s own selection criteria. Possible criteria could include evaluation of record books, selection by a county dairy committee/agent, or any other selection method that the county deems appropriate.

ELIGIBILITY Must be currently enrolled in the 4-H Dairy Project and have at least two previous years of

membership in it. Must be in 10

th-12

th grades as of January 1, 2012.

Should have an outstanding record of involvement and accomplishments in the 4-H Dairy Project.

AWARD TIMELINE August 2011– March 2012 – Counties select individual winners using their own selection criteria. March 31, 2012 – Each county should submit the name and address of the county award recipient by March 31 to Beth Heinze. A second individual from the county may be nominated for the state-wide award. That individual’s contact information must also be turned in by March 31. April 15, 2012 – The Extension Youth Specialist will send each county winner/nominee an application to compete for the statewide awards. June 1, 2012 – State Award Forms must be returned by June 1 to Beth Heinze. July 15, 2012– 20 finalists for interviews will be notified. August 1, 2012 (at State Fair) - Finalist interviews August 4, 2012 – Winners announced at the Governor’s Dairyland Youth Celebration ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

The “friend” must not be a current certified 4-H leader. Nominations may be submitted by 4-H members and leaders in the Vernon County 4-H program. Supporters may receive the nomination more than once. The Vernon County Leader/Parent Federation will make the final selection.

Special Leader Award is an annual award given to 4-H volunteers who do an exceptional job of providing learning experiences for 4-H members. Nominations must be submitted by4-H club officers. Each club may nominate one leader in the 1-3 years of leadership category and one in the 4 years or more category. SPECIAL NOTE: A leader may be recognized only once in each category (1-3) and (4 and over).

Volunteer of the Year Award is an annual award given to a 4-H leader or volunteer who actively and willingly without constraint or guarantee of reward, shows constant support of the Vernon County 4-H program.

What is it? State Art Team creates art-work around a theme for WI 4-H & Youth Conference. They design and organize the WI 4-H & Youth Conference Art Exhibit, reception, and provide guided exhibit tours. They teach seminars and train to be peer leaders for county and regional events including the Wisconsin State Fair.

What is it? The State 4-H Photo Team of 10-12 youth photographers take digital photos of Confer-ence events and groups, and prepares a Conference Pow-erPoint presentation. The Photo Team will also partici-pate at the Wisconsin State Fair!

What is it? An exciting opportunity for high school youth to serve as theatre ambassadors. At WI 4-H & Youth Conference, youth will share their skills through a performance and teaching seminars. The Drama Co. will also perform for the first six days of the Wisconsin State Fair!

Wisconsin 4-H Youth Leader Council (YLC) are youth lead-ers representing districts throughout Wisconsin with the purpose to strengthen 4-H Youth Development programs by promoting 4-H, providing leadership at Wisconsin 4-H & Youth Conference, and com-municating needs between local and state levels.

What is it? Since 1987 the Wisconsin 4-H Showcase Singers have been dazzling audiences at the Wis-consin 4-H & Youth Confer-ence, the Wisconsin State Fair and more! The group is com-prised of 4-H members, high school age and older who perform “show choir” material.

What is it? A camp for middle school 4-Her’s in grades 5-8. Camp-ers are taught by older 4-H youth and rotate through each session. Sessions include photography, music, drama, communications, visual arts and juggling!

What is it? An exciting weekend of going “In-depth” with your favorite arts topic! Sessions will in-clude painting & drawing, the-atre, choreography, photog-raphy, culinary arts, leather craft, clowning, fiber art and much, much more!

What is it? Now there are TWO camps for 4-H members in grades 3-5 and their parents and leaders. Sessions are taught in music, drama, visual arts, arts and crafts, juggling and more!.

The Cooperative Extension, UW-Extension, Crawford/Vernon Counties Nutrition Education Program has a

part-time (70%) position open with primary job responsibilities in Vernon County.

Provide nutrition education to youth and families living on limited incomes.

HS graduate or equivalent required.

Bachelor’s degree in education, nutrition or community health preferred.

Must have reliable transportation.

Sustainable Agriculture Grants

The 2011 North Central Region - Sustainable Agriculture Research and

Education Program (NCR-SARE) Youth & Youth Educator Grant Call for

Proposals is now available.

These grants are intended to provide opportunities for youth in the

North Central Region to learn more about Sustainable Agriculture.

Sustainable agriculture is good for the environment, profitable, and

socially responsible. A total of approximately $34,000 is available for

this program.

There are two options:

1. YOUTH GRANTS. These grants are for on-farm research, demonstration,

or education projects by youth ages 8-18. Research and demonstration

projects are for hands-on efforts to explore Sustainable Agriculture

issues and practices. Education projects can involve teaching others

about Sustainable Agriculture or attending a Sustainable Agriculture

conference, workshop, or camp. $400 maximum.

2. YOUTH EDUCATOR GRANTS. These are grants for educators to provide

programming on sustainable agriculture for youth. $2,000 maximum.

Interested applicants can find the call for proposals online as well as

useful information for completing a proposal at

Proposals are due by 4:30 pm, Thursday, January 12, 2012 at the NCR-SARE

office in Jefferson City, MO.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Animal Sciences invites

high school juniors and seniors and transfer students interested in exploring an edu-cation in Animal Sciences to an Open House on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a 9:30 a.m. registration. A registration deadline of a firm com-mitment is requested by November 8th. High School Juniors, Seniors, Transfers and their parents will gain a firsthand look of the department as they tour campus and fa-cilities and learn of the exciting opportunities available to the major. Ingredients Instructions

1 lb pork sausage (I use half pork & half beef) Mix all ingredients together. Shape into small
