A Letter from Father Larry McNally

Dear Family of St. Matthias, WELCOME HOME!!!!!! Oh, it so good to be back in Church. I have certainly missed you on the weekends for Mass. WELCOME HOME. Masses next Sunday will be at 9AM and 11AM. I thank Karyn and Mark for getting our Church ready for re-opening. I thank you both for all your hard work and time put in to get us re-opened. I thank you so very much. I thank our Ministers of Hospitality on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Saturdays for Church Adoration and Visitation. I hope that you had a good 4th of July. I thank those who have come forward to help with cleaning of the pews, kneelers, etc. between Masses. Please know that I have been celebrating daily Mass for you and praying for you every day. I thank you for your prayers, emails, and cards for my recovery. There is no surgical procedure that can be done. It is bed rest, over the counter pain relievers, and PT. Thank you so very much for your concern. I do appreciate it. I certainly feel loved. On behalf of our Parish Finance Committee and myself, thank you for your participation in

our Offertory collection via givecentral.org, the U.S. Mail, or dropping it off at the rectory. We thank you for your generosity and thoughtful-ness. I thank you for ALL that you do for our Family of St. Matthias. As I said above, I pray for you every day and I will continue to celebrate daily Mass. Thank you so very much for your concern for me. I do appreciate it. I love you back. Have a good week GOD'S BLESSINGS Fr. Larry

Please consider your four-legged friends when celebrating the holiday, and remember that,

“There are no kinds of fireworks that are legal in Illinois.”

St. Matthias Re-Opening Process: We appreciate your patience as we continue to make our re-opening process as smooth and safe a transition as we can. Re-opening our Church does call each of us to exercise faithful citizenship. We each need to take personal responsibility for the common good as well as our own safety.

Guidelines for every Church service: • Reservations must be placed ahead of time. This is done either through the online app “Sign Up Genius”, by calling 773.506.2191

or emailing [email protected] your reservation. This is so that we can observe all social distancing require-ments as well as having a contact list in the case of a Covid situation that occurs in the Church.

• Masks must be worn at all times in the Church.

• Social distancing requirements of 6 feet will be observed at all times.

• Hand sanitizer will be available upon entering the Church.

• If you have a fever, or symptoms of illness, we ask that you stay home. If you have been exposed to someone with Covid in the 2 weeks prior to being in the Church, please stay home.

Current Schedule for St. Matthias Church: • Confession – Saturdays from 4-45pm (not this Saturday, July 4th) ∗ (Sign Up Link - https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0D45AFAC2DA3F94-sacrament) • Private Prayer/Adoration (for the month of June) – Tuesdays from 9-11am and Thursdays from 6-8pm ∗ (Sign Up link - https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0D45AFAC2DA3F94-private) • Sunday Mass – ∗ Sunday, July 5th at 9am (all spots have been taken; we will accept no walk-ins) ∗ Sunday, July 12th, Masses at 9am and 11am (75 spots each) ∗ Sign up link for Mass - https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0D45AFAC2DA3F94-sunday ∗ You may also call the rectory (773.506.2191) to request a spot at Mass.

Re-opening Documents/Information from the Archdiocese: https://www.archchicago.org/coronavirus/reopening-training

We are entering Phase II this weekend: Phase II allows the Church to open for Mass for up to 15-20% of the space available with social distancing guidelines, which puts us at about 85 per mass.

News

Pope Francis, via Vatican News, offers this prayer during the COVID-19 crisis:

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas — we who are put to the test — and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Domestic Violence It is no surprise that Covid-19 has increased the incidence and intensity of domestic violence. The Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline reports that calls for help increased 50% in March, from 60 to 90 a day. If you know or suspect someone is a victim, please check on them! If they are

in immediate need, help them call 911, the National DV Hotline: 800.799.7233 or the Illinois DV Hotline: 877.863.6338 to connect to

services. Additional training and awareness resources are available at the Archdiocese Domestic Violence Outreach - https://

Support the Kolbe House Jail Ministry In the effort to protect vulnerable people in Illinois prisons from COVID-19, many are being released quickly. Upon release it is common for people to have nothing but the clothes on their backs. To get a safe start on life in the communi-ty they need food, clothing, basic transportation, guidance to resources, and reinforcement of social distancing guidelines. Kolbe House Jail Ministry is part of a coalition of organizations providing such assistance. Can you help us meet this need? Your donation today will be used to purchase $50 grocery gift cards and $30 CTA passes for essential travel. Give online here or mail your check to:

Prayer to Overcome Racism Mary, friend and mother to all,

through your Son, God has found a way to unite himself

to every human being, called to be one people,

sisters and brothers to each other.

We ask for your help in calling on your Son,

seeking forgiveness for the times when we have failed to love and re-spect one another.

We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need

to overcome the evil of racism and to build a just society.

We ask for your help in following your Son,

so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts

but will be replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person.

Mother of the Church,

the Spirit of your Son Jesus warms our hearts: pray for us. Amen.

Update for St. Matthias/Queen of Angels

Effective August 1, 2020, Monsignor Jim Kaczorowski, the current pastor of Queen of Angels, will be the new pastor of our soon-to-be-merged Parish of St. Matthias and Queen of Angels. Fr. Larry is awaiting his new assignments in another parish. The timing of this and the location are still to be determined. It is sad news that Fr. Larry will be leaving us, as he has been a very pastoral and good Shepherd for us for the past 5 years. Please pray for both Fr. Larry and Msgr. Jim as they look to begin new ministerial assignments in the near future. May God continue to bless them and their communities. St. Matthias School will continue its academic and spiritual excellence under the direction of Principal Katie Carden and the school staff as an Archdiocesan School.

St. Matthias School IB News St. Matthias School is the first Catholic elementary school to offer wall-to-wall International Baccalaure-ate (IB) programming in Illinois! St. Matthias was au-thorized to provide the Middle Years Programme for 6th-8th grades in 2014, and recently received authoriza-tion to provide the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for PreK 3 - 5th grades. We are the only Catholic wall-to-wall IB school in Illinois, and one of only seven in the United States.

What is IB? Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation offering four highly respected programmes of international edu-cation that develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rap-idly globalizing world. The IB aims to develop active learners and internationally-minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of signifi-cance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

St. Matthias is enrolling for the 2020-21 school year!

When you enroll for the 2020-21 school year, we will waive your family registration fee (worth $200) and re-duce your first tuition payment by $500! Act now-openings in most grades are limited. Contact Carmen at [email protected] or 773.784.0999, or vis-it www.stmatthiasschool.org for more information.
