SR. CENTER FEATURES EVENTS CONT:
Senior Night at the Firebirds Basketball Game:
In celebration of National Fitness Month and National Health & Wellness
Day For Seniors, Northern and Eastern Wake Senior Centers are excit-
ed to collaborate with The Raleigh Firebirds for an Intergenerational
event on May 22.
The Firebird's history began during the summer of 2017; Wade Harris
began conversations with Commissioner David Magley of the newly
formed NAPB, discussing opportunities for professional level players he
had been training in the Triangle area of North Carolina. Some of the
very players Coach Harris has trained played in the NBA's G League, on
pro teams in Canada and overseas, and in the NAPB during the 2018
season. With such conditions in terms of regional talent, the discussion
turned toward the potential for a franchise team in Raleigh. In Mr. Mag-
ley's extensive experience in all areas of professional basketball, a mar-
ket like Raleigh has a lot of potential efficiencies and competitive ad-
vantages.
Led by former Duke basketball superstar head coach Robert Brickey,
the Firebirds began their season on April 9, 2021. They are hosting 12
home games at The Dream Center, 5616 Fox Road in Raleigh, NC., of
which May 22 is one. The Firebirds will provide transportation from
each center to and from the game. The busses will depart the centers
at 2:30pm for the 4:00pm game and return by 9pm to the senior center's
parking lot. Tickets are discounted for those 55 and above to $10.00
and $5.00 for those 12 and under.
Halftime entertainment is provided by the Firebird Ball-erinas. The Ball-
erinas represent unique dance and traditions mixing the cultures of in-
digenous American and European influences that have shifted over
time. You may even recognize our favored ZUMBA as part of their per-
formance. In addition, they serve as ambassadors for Health Aware-
ness, Autism, MS, Cancer, and Mental Health.
You don't want to miss this opportunity to enjoy a basketball game,
great entertainment, food, free transportation, and the possibility of so-
cialization and time with your grandchildren.
Tickets must be purchased at least a week in advance at your local
senior center. You may pay by check or cash. Credit cards are not ac-
cepted. Call the Northern Wake Senior Center at 919-554-4111 or East-
ern Wake Senior Center at 919-365-4248 for additional information and
ticket purchases
Note: The busses provided by The Firebirds and basketball game site
will meet COVID19 and CDC guidelines and procedures. Masks must
be worn by all of those attending.

SR. CENTER ZOOMERS: Each newsletter will address an issue or respond to one of your ques-
tions. This week we want to thank Emily McDonald for the article “Five
Things You Didn’t Know Your iPhone Could Do”. Thank you Emily. If
you have other questions, please call either senior center and we will
have one of the Zoomers call you and or write about it in the next news-
letter.
Five Things You Didn’t Know Your iPhone Could Do
If you have an iPhone or Apple related product you know that these de-
vices can do a number of interesting and useful things. I am going to tell
you five things your iPhone can do that you might not know about.
Number one: Your iPhone is able to read a selected word/sentence
or an entire page of your screen if you are having trouble reading the in-
formation or if you would just rather hear the text. To allow this function
go to settings, click on “Accessibility, “ go to the “Spoken Content” tab,
and select the “Speak Selection” (if you want a selected word/sentence
to be spoken) or “Speak Screen” (if you want the entire page spoken).
When you’re on a page you would like to hear audibly, you can swipe
down with two fingers from the middle portion of the top of the screen
and you should hear a voice starting to read the page and also see a
menu bar pop up with a pause, fast forward, rewind, and adjust speed
option. If you would like to hear a selected word/sentence, you have to
press and hold the portion you want to be read. When you have your de-
sired text, a menu bar will pop up with the option labeled “Speak…,”
press that to hear the text (if the menu bar does not pop up and the word/
sentence is still highlighted you can just tap on the selected portion once
and it should appear).
Number two: You can create a medical ID that can be displayed at the
bottom of your passcode screen in case of emergencies. To create a
medical ID go to the “Phone” app where you should see, at the top of the
screen underneath the search bar, your name (or the phone holder’s
name), click on that. continued on next page.
13
Northern Wake Senior Center Eastern Wake Senior Center 919-554-4111 919-365-4248 [email protected] [email protected]
Number two (continued): Once you have clicked on the name you
should be taken to a screen that has your number. At the bottom of this
screen you should see an option to create a medical ID, click on this.
You can then insert your information along with a picture that can be
used in case of emergencies.
Number three: You can reduce the amount of blue light your
screen gives off (which is especially useful when your trying to get a
good night’s sleep but you like to use your phone before bed). You can
access this feature two ways. The first way is going to your phone’s
settings, clicking on “Display and Brightness, “ and selecting the “Night
Shift” option located in the middle portion of the page. You can turn on
the “Scheduled” option and assign a time that you would like your phone
to switch to reducing the amount of blue light (or you can choose the
“manually enable” option). The second way to access this feature is by
swiping down from the top right-hand corner of your phone’s screen.
Press and hold the brightness adjusting bar and press the “Night Shift”
button to turn it on.
Number four: You can add effects to your text messages. If you’re
sending a message and you want to add a little something extra feel
free to try this feature! After you have created a message you want to
send, press and hold the blue arrow. This allows you to send the mes-
sage various different ways. You have the option to either send the
message with a “slam,” you can send it “loud,” “gentle,” or with “invisible
ink.” You can also click on the “Screen” option (next to the “Bubble” op-
tion) at the top of the page to send the message with an effect that will
take up the entire screen for a few seconds (swipe to see more effect
options).
Finally, Number five: You can track your steps with your iPhone. Go
to your “Health” app, click on the “Browse” option at the bottom of the
screen, click “Activity,” then click “Steps” to see how many steps you
have taken that day. Although I will say that this feature works better if
you link a fitness tracker, smart watch, or a tracker app, you can still use
it without additional devices! Just know that the phone only tracks the
amount of steps that you take when you’re holding the phone itself. I
definitely recommend browsing through the other categories on the
“Health” app, this app has a variety of different health-related topics and
it also offers different apps that you can download to your phone and
link so that your stats can be tracked.
