Considered a traitor by other Lakota leaders like Crazy Horse, Red Cloud signed a treaty with the US Government promising never to take up arms again. He brought his people to what is now known as the Pine Ridge Reservation where they have lived, and called “home” for over 130 years. The Lakota people are proud, reserved, and peaceable people. They have a strong connection with their land (the size of the state of Connecticut) just South of the Badlands in South Dakota. They have a strong connection to the extended family. Most neighborhoods are lined with relatives with some degree of blood-line connections. The Lakota are a deeply spiritual people: their spirituality evident in so many of their lives in very practical and everyday ways. Many are Christians and are involved in, or have some connection to a church. Bethel is collecting school supplies for two ministries: Lutheran World Relief and the Wolf Creek school on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. There are three ways you can help: 1) Using a school bag and list found at the Welcome Center, donate the list of 10 items and return to the church. 2) Donate any type or amount of school supplies for the Wolf Creek school. 3) Donate cash to purchase supplies. Please specify LWR school supplies and/or Pine Ridge supplies, then place in envelope at either Welcome Center. Extra supplies will go to our local schools.
The Episcopal and Catholic denominations have the longest history and perhaps the strongest presence on the reservation. Yet, because of the economy (they are one of the poorest counties in the Unites States) the ministry of most churches there are at a “bare bones” level and they struggle to keep their doors open. This is the scenario that we, as Bethel Congregation, entered into four years ago, as a mission opportunity and a partnership with the people there. Pine Ridge has been a powerful opportunity to have a meaningful exchange with the poor and oppressed, with people of diversity, and a unique history (not unlike the children of Israel). Our partnership has also given us a “front row seat” in learning about, and learning from this culture of appreciative people. I hope you’ll consider joining us for our fall trip to Pine Ridge: Thursday-Sunday, October 27 – 30. We’ll travel out together in vans, and stay at the Pine Ridge
Retreat Center. The cost is $ 2 2 5 . 0 0 w h i c h c o v e r s transportation, food, and lodging. We’ll be: 1.) delivering school supplies and quilts to people there; 2.) seeing some of the im-portant sights (Wounded Knee, Red Cloud School, The Pow Wow Grounds); 3.) hearing the stories of some of the people; 4.) doing a small service project. This is an exceptional opportunity to see, meet and experience what most people will only hear or read about, as well as to learn something about Lakota history, culture and issues. We only have room for 20 people, so if you are interested you’ll want to let me know very soon. So why not pull out your calendar now and plan to join us? It’s the change of a lifetime and you might find yourself “falling in love” with these gracious, proud, interesting and very appreciative people. This trip may change you in some powerful ways. CONTINUES Morning Fuel continues meeting on Wednesday mornings, 9am, at the Highlands Campus throughout the summer. The playground is available for all the kids to use while we meet for a devotion (books provided). Invite your friends, all are welcome with or without kids!
Rese rva t i ons have been completed for the Young at Hearts trip to the Guthrie to see South Pacific in August, and plans have been made for several upcoming trips. September 19: guided tour of U.S. Bank Stadium, the new home of the Viking football team. This behind the scenes tour will provide access to, among other places, the the team’s locker room, the field itself, the press box and a look at the suites. November 30: Minneapolis Institute of Art “Martin Luther:

Art and the Reformation”. The show will feature a close-up of Luther’s life through his personal possessions. More than 100 objects will be brought to the MIA, the first time these items will travel to North America. April: Those Church Basement Ladies have done it!! They’ve allowed men in their kitchen and in April we will travel to the Plymouth Playhouse to see their newest show, “Rise Up, O Men”. More information and sign-up for these outings will be announced at a later date.

What an amazing, spirit-filled week! The third week of July, Bethel hosted Cave Quest VBS teaching kids that Jesus is the Light of the World. There were 260 participants and 120+ volunteers so Highlands was full of the love and spirit of Jesus. A special thanks to all our volunteers – It couldn’t have happened without you! If you missed VBS or didn’t see any photos, be sure to get on Facebook and take a look at all the Jesus-inspired photos of our week!
In July, a group of 13 students and 5 chaperones t rave led to Cincinnati, Ohio for an ‘urban immersion’ experience. T h e y c o n n e c t e d w i t h a congregation there led by former Mount Zion Pastor Brian Ferguson to learn about the social and economic factors contributing to the poverty and other challenges in the community. The group led worship at Brian’s church and spread God’s love through the community. It was a full week of learning, spiritual growth sprinkled with lots of fun too!

You will notice many changes in
Bethel’s online and printed
presence this next month. After
much praying, planning and
designing, the rebranding is
ready to be rolled out.
Bethel’s mission statement has
been revised to reflect our
values: Bethel Lutheran Church
is a place for all people to
CONNECT with others, to
intentionally GROW in their
faith, and in turn, to put our
faith into action and SERVE
others as Jesus directs us.
Bethel’s rebranding creates a
consistent and intentional
communication plan that points
toward this mission statement.
You will see the chosen logo
design quickly communicates
that we are a Christian
organization. The design is
contemporary and clean, better
positioning us amongst other
churches.
A circle is used because it
represents the notion of
w h o l e n e s s , e t e r n i t y ,
timelessness and above all God.
God is a circle whose center is
everywhere and whose
circumference is nowhere. That
is why we have intentionally left
the circle incomplete. We are
visually suggesting that we are
inclusive and we are continually
connecting, growing and
serving.
In mid-August, you will receive

the central hub of all things
