Sent In To the World – Part 2

The theme of “the world” as a distinct and opposite entity from the Church is a very dominant theme in John’s Gospel. The word “world” is used in the Gospel of John nearly 60 times, varying somewhat depending on which translation you have. It is something John talks about frequently, and depicts Jesus talking about often as well. For John, the “world” means pretty much the same as what it means to us: it’s human society organizing itself without God. It’s secularism. The world rejects the Word of God, the authority of God, even the existence of God. The world looks to itself, its own wisdom, its own values, its own governance. The world won’t have any god or book to rule over it. The world wants Christ to go away and Christians to keep silent. Stop for a moment and consider our culture today, as compared to 60, 50, even 40 years ago. Things that were unheard of, things that were inconceivable 40 to 60 years ago are commonplace today. The condition a culture is in is reflected in its arts. Think of the sorts of movies you can see nowadays, compared to what you could see in the 1940s and 50s. Or the kinds of books and magazines you can buy at any bookstore. Look at what is on television today in comparison to what was on the 40s and 50s, especially with satellite and cable. Consider average Sunday church attendance today in comparison to what it was five decades ago. Look at the divorce rate, the number of people opting out of marriage in favor of cohabitation. Look at the number of out of wedlock pregnancies now in comparison to then. Or the crime rate, or drug and alcohol abuse. Look at what is happening to the traditional family. And on and on. It looks as if the world is getting its wish. Since the 1940s does it look like the church or the world is the one gaining ground? Is it the world or the Church that is receding? In 2006 there was a news story about an Italian atheist who is going to sue the Roman Catholic Church. This man claims that the Church has completely fabricated the Gospel message. He says that Jesus never even existed. He is demanding incontrovertible proof from the Church that Jesus really existed and that He is who the Church claims Him to be. If the Italian atheist wins his case, he believes it will mean the final dismantling and demolition of Christianity once and for all. He tried filing a similar suit against an individual priest in 2002, but no Italian court would take the case. But he found another court that considered it. And his attorney, with a gleam in his eye, said in an interview, “this is going to be bigger than the Da Vinci Code.” Why does this man, why does the world hate Christ and Christians so? We know why. The world loves darkness. The world loves self-indulgence, sense-pleasures, material wealth and all sorts of depravity. And when Christ comes into the world, His light exposes the world’s deeds for the evil they are. And the world doesn’t like that. The world doesn’t want to give up its desires and practices. The world wants Jesus to go away and Christians to keep silent. The world hates Christ and Christians. To be continued . . .

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Friday 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. Saturday 4:00 a.m.—5:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

viernes 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. sabado 4:00 a.m.—5:00 a.m.

On the weekend of June 1st and June 2nd all parishes in our Archdiocese will be conducting a second collection for the Priest Pension Fund. This fund supports the pension for priests who have reached retirement age. This year there will be 66 priests receiving pensions. After faithfully serving many years in the Lord’s vineyard, the Priest Pension Plan ensures that our semi and fully retired priests may have a dignified retirement by being able to pay for the many expenses encountered in retirement. As the average age of priests continues to rise and priests, along with the general population, live longer lives, there is a greater need than ever to ensure the viability and strength of our pension. Please be generous in making a donation on the weekend on June 1st and June 2nd to support our Archdiocesan Priest Pension Plan.

The Daughters of Notre Dame are currently accepting Father’s Day Memorial’s. A special Memorial Mass will be said on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the 7:45 a.m. Mass; names will be published in the weekly bulletin. Envelopes for donations are located in the back of the church in the narthex. Donations may be placed in the collection basket or dropped off at the Pastoral Center. Deadline for intentions is Sunday, June 16, 2019.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion - Upcoming Training Session

For anyone who would like to serve as an EMHC at Mass or as a Minister to the Sick:

June 30, 2019, in the Church, beginning @ 1:30 pm to approximately 3:30 pm.

If you have any questions, please contact either Jesse Garza, 367-7018, or Rose Petmecky, 830-329-1000.

Is This All There Is? On Resurrection and

Eternal Life, by Gerhard Lohfink is a ver itable encyclopedia for Eastertide. In only 300 exhaustively documented pages, this German biblical scholar and theologian includes exploration of not only the finest modern Scriptural and theological scholarship on the Christian view of death, but also the myriad prospects and explanations offered in other traditions. In Part One, What People Think, there are lavish exhibits, from gravestones to the latest Hindu and Buddhist theology, which support what we read on the back cover, from Dale C. Allison Jr., of Princeton Theological Seminary. He calls the book “hugely informed, consistently provocative, conscientiously pastoral, and – in the best sense of the word – imaginative.” Part Two, What Israel Learned, then Part

Three, What Entered the World in Jesus, are studded with scriptural citations, reaping the fruit of Lohfink’s years as a Biblical scholar. On page 131, the opening page of Part Four,

What Will Happen to Us, Lohfink says, “Now we begin the central part of this book. Everything I have said so far was only preparation, introduction, and a surveying of the terrain. … From here on…we will be presenting a theological interpretation of our statements of faith.” The dust jacket claims, “With his characteristically gentle but clear language, he reveals the power of Christian resurrection.” The final section is titled Part Five, What We

Can Do. The theology challenges the intellect, but the final page contains these words, which make it all worthwhile: “We always want to be doing something. We want to criticize, intervene, change, improve, shape. And rightly so! That is our duty. But in death, when we come to God, that all ceases. Then our existence will be pure astonishment, pure looking, pure praise, pure adoration – an unimaginable and unnameable happiness.” Check out this book and read the section which intrigues you, discuss it with your friends, then return it to share with others – or to borrow it another day.

The Interior Castle St. Teresa of Avila’s Most Influential Work 13 Wednesdays, June 5—August 28, 2019

12078 S. Hwy 16 (between Kerrville & Fredericksburg)

Are you looking for a wise guide for your journey into deeper prayer? Do you seek an experienced companion to help you grow in your search for the living and loving God? St. Teresa of Avila could be just that guide and companion. She imaged the soul of each person to be like a crystal castle in which there are many rooms all leading to the center where God dwells, loves lavishly, and invites the person into profound transforming union. In this 13 week study we will explore St. Teresa’s classic book, The Interior Castle, which contains inexhaustible wisdom about how God works in a person’s life, leading him or her into deeper and deeper experiences of love and union with the divine.

Registration fee is $95.00 which includes study material, refreshments and facilitator stipend. To register, please submit check to The Sacred Garden, P.O. Box 2853, Bandera, TX 78003. Please reply your attendance to Shirley Higdon at (830)992-1997. She may also be reached for more information and questions.
