PROLOGUE
Joel Barlow (1754-1812),born in Redding,Connecticut,was a great poet who inspired in the life of ChristopherColumbus, wrote an epic, Iyric and dramatic eulogy inverse with the ambitionto make it an American IIiad,somethingsimilar to what FranciscoRuizde Leon did inhisHernandia (1755).Thisworkisdividedin ninebooks,that were publishedin 1787with the title The Vision ofColumbus. This waspossiblethanksto the economichelpof a twelvepage list of suscribersamongwhichwere kingLouis XVI, Washington,Franklin, Paine, De La Fayetteand other prominentpeopleof that time whosenames, insome instances,are includedin the poem.
In 1784he stablishedat Hartforda weekelypaper, theAmerican Mercury, and together with Trumbull andDwight, attempted to create an American literature.Perhaps, due to the recent war of independence(1776)helpedby the Spanishand French crowns,that generationtried to get awayfrom the Englishinfluenceregressingtothe beginningsofthe cultureofthe NewWorld.Thereforethe inspirationon the Spanishheroicdeeds.This bookwaswrittenat a timewhenthe Statesofthe unionwere simplythat: a confederation of States without a centralgovernment; perhaps the happiest political epoch thatcountry has ever hado This book was published whenWashingtonwaselectedfirstPresidentby the Convention.
