Ploughing Days Don’t forget to register with Col Fotheringham for the ploughing day at his place on October 14. Contact

details in the last newsletter. Some guidelines are being prepared and will be available to participants, and will

be on display in the Club Shed.

First Aid The back page now contains the names of our newly qualified First Aiders who all completed their training.

Coming Events August 11-12 is the Golden Oldies Truck Club’s biennial Truck and Tractor Show at Dubbo

Showground. Much of the display area is under cover, and a most interesting collection of trucks and tractors

can be expected. The Howard Register is mounting a major display also.

The North Shore Agriculture and Horticulture Society is holding a Heavy Horse Spectacular at St Ives

Showground on August 18-19. The Club has a generous allocation of space and we need to fill it both days to

justify the donation they are making. Russell Gear is Club co-ordinator on 9874 7750.

Also on August 19 is the annual Maroota Muster at Maroota Public School, Old Northern Road,

Maroota. It is a good opportunity to take our Club Registered vehicles for a run. We will be leaving the Club

Grounds at 8.00am. Cars, Trucks, Tractors, Motor Bikes all welcome, this a great family day out. Contact

Steven 0418 453 203.

On Wednesday, August 29, we have again been invited to the “Blokes Breakfast” at Chifley College at

Bidwill. It’s an early start, but is all over by about 10.00am. It is an opportunity to show to a youth audience

and their dads.

On September 1-2 (Fathers’ Day weekend) the Rusty Iron Rally is held at Macksville Showground.

This is a premier event, very well organised, and a must for many of our Club members. It attracts exhibitors

from Queensland, New England, Sydney and all points in between.

The Macquarie Towns Motorcycle & Preservation Club has its annual Show Day at Macquarie Park,

Windsor, on September 9. A few SAMCI members usually attend, and they welcome our engine displays

alongside the motorcycles.

Our own annual “Clarendon Classic” Rally is on September 15 & 16, with setup the day before and a

BBQ that evening. Tickets are now on sale for the Saturday night dinner with numbers limited to 150. Prices

are $15.00 adults and $10.00 children 12 and under. There are still some gaps in the Gate Roster. Contact

Morrie Barrett if willing to put in half an hour either or both days. We are also looking for a few volunteers to

do traffic marshalling. Last year parking became a bit chaotic, and we want to manage it a lot better this time.

The overall rally layout plan is being revised, and the result should be on display at the August meeting. More

fencing and star pickets are being obtained. Remember that all exhibitors are required to register, to make sure

their insurance cover is up to date. Contact Steve Brown if you have any special requirements for your

display.

September 29, 30 & October 1 (the long weekend) is the annual camping weekend at Russell &

Georgia Gear’s property at Napoleon Reef, near Bathurst. This year they are having a major garage sale

cleanout. Their place offers excellent camping and facilities. Let them know in advance if planning to camp

overnight.

October 14 is Col Fotheringham’s Ploughing Day for one and two cylinder tractors at his place. See

notes elsewhere.

Then on October 13-14 is the Campbelltown Steam Museum’s October Rally. Their twice yearly

events are well supported by SAMCI members, many of whom camp over to enjoy the great campfire

camaraderie in the evenings.

On October 27-28, the Hunter Valley Vintage Machinery Club is having its annual Cranky Handle

Rally at Maitland. This event used to be held in a village atmosphere at Morpeth, but their new location is

easily accessed with plenty of parking.

The last item on this month’s list is the trip by a number of members and friends to the Lake

Goldsmith, Victoria, 100th

Rally. This trip is from 27 October till 10 November, and takes in numerous

collections and museums of interest along the way, travelling down to Western Victoria, along the Great

Ocean Road, and back home via the South Coast.

Sanctioning of events A general note about the events listed in our Events Calendar on page 7 – you may notice that

particular events do not appear as ‘Sanctioned’. This can mean one of two things, either it is listed as being of

possible interest and will receive sanctioned status if anyone indicates they may attend, or it simply has been

listed pending the next Club meeting where it will be sanctioned. Note that in order to exhibit at an event, or

drive your Club registered vehicle to an event, it must be sanctioned, and recorded in the Events Calendar or

Meeting Minutes. When driving your Club registered vehicle to an event, it is a good idea to carry evidence of

Club approval of the event, such as a copy of the newsletter showing it in the Events Calendar, or a copy of

the flier or invitation to the event. We don’t always receive invitations, but simply list them from members’

input, so the newsletter is the best option.

Sydney Antique & Classic Truck Show on June 17 – Report by Ian Browning & Colleen Soper

The day before was such an awful day, 12º maximum and wet and dreary, but Sunday dawned a complete

contrast and was a perfect day for displaying historic vehicles, from FX Holdens to a mighty Oshkosh prime

mover. Surprisingly, the grounds of the Penrith Museum of Fire where the display was held were firm and dry

underfoot, and except for a few spaces where it appears people were put off by the weather, it was an

excellent display. A few SAMCI members displayed, and a number more were visitors. There were certainly

many beautifully restored trucks, but I was impressed by the number of vehicles in ‘working clothes’ or in ‘as

found’ condition. Ian’s Thornycroft wouldn’t have been out of place! Most impressive was a FAUN heavy

haulage tractor still in active service, and (below Left) a Tilling Stevens truck of about WW1 vintage.

Below: Bruce Gunter’s Commer ‘Knocker’ always stands out

This 1910 McLaren Traction Engine (below Left) has a great history. Currently owned by Benny Rachwal,

this beautiful engine was built in 1899 and was used by the British army force to haul artillery. Benny said

that its history is only now becoming known. This would explain some of its features like the large solid fly-

wheel which is usually a spoke wheel

This Atkinson (below Right) has worked for Rocla in Regentville and has been within the family for many,

many years. The owner showed a photograph of what it looked like in its hay day and it was a beautiful truck.

Hardworking and reliable, it is now awaiting restoration.

Page 4: The Vintage Voicecdhec.au2.com/uploads/2/8/8/3/2883996/samci_newsletter... · 2018. 9. 5. · The Vintage Voice SAMC Inc Newsletter No 192 – Aug 2012 – Page 1 The Vintage Voice

This 1920’s Chevrolet truck (below Left) stood back from the other trucks at the Classic and Antique Truck

Show but stood out finely to attract a good crowd. With its Douglas motor bike (below Right) tied on its back,

it attracted comments like "If the truck breaks down you can always ride the bike home." Looking at its design

and structure, one can only be thankful for the padded seats of today that motor bikes possess.

FRANKS TRANSPORT (Restoring the old family businesses 1946 Chev truck) submitted by Luke Franks

Franks Transport was based at 29 Riverview Street North Richmond up until the business ceased operation in

around 1968-69. The business was established by my Great-Grandfather, Percy Franks, and run in later years

by my Grandfather Ken Franks. The business grew under Ken’s direction and was well known in the

Hawkesbury Area as carriers of fresh farm and orchard produce from the many Hawkesbury based growers to

the Sydney markets. In years gone by the Hawkesbury district was home to extensive orchards and market

gardens, sadly development and other forces have greatly reduced this activity.

The Franks Transport fleet was well recognised in the area with the maroon and black colour schemes and

detailed signwriting on the bodies. The maintenance and care of the fleet, as well as driving duties, were

undertaken by Ken and he pushed the Drivers to clean their trucks regularly and thoroughly. Reconditioned

engines were run in on a special engine run-in frame set up in the shed before being installed in the truck and

entrusted to the Driver.

The shed that the business occupied in Riverview Street still exists and is now a Farm Produce Store.

Riverview Street is no longer the quiet dirt back street as depicted in the photos but is now a busy business

district street that you could no longer line a fleet of trucks up for a group photo on!

Jump ahead to the early 2000’s and my Father and fellow SAMC member, Graham Franks, learned that one

of the original trucks was still in the area and it was quickly sought out. This truck was the smallest of the

fleet, a 1946 Chevrolet Light Truck 30cwt which was known as No.2 and was used as the general run around

vehicle and for picking up small loads. The purchase of the truck was quickly negotiated and whilst the

purchase price may have exceeded the going rate for a truck in its condition at the time, the significance of

securing one of the original trucks back into the family was priceless. This truck holds an even greater

significance for Dad as he got his drivers licence in this truck in the late 1960’s!

The truck was found to be located within a section of the original shed

and due to shops being built beside it a section of corrugated iron wall

had to be removed to get it out. The truck was found to be largely

complete with most of the original Franks Transport livery still intact.

However kids had broken into the shed at some stage and painted on

the truck. Luckily nothing had been broken or stolen from it. The

missing Chevrolet script hub caps even turned up a few weeks after

purchase, found separately in a back shed by the previous owner. A

couple of hours after towing the truck home the engine was running

and it was smiles all round! Right: The Chev on Recovery day 2002

Page 5: The Vintage Voicecdhec.au2.com/uploads/2/8/8/3/2883996/samci_newsletter... · 2018. 9. 5. · The Vintage Voice SAMC Inc Newsletter No 192 – Aug 2012 – Page 1 The Vintage Voice

www.sydneyantiquemachineryclub.com The Vintage Voice SAMC Inc Newsletter No 192 – Aug 2012 – Page 5

An extensive bare chassis and back-to-bare metal restoration was soon commenced. The help of friends and

family with skills in mechanical work, panel and paint was engaged and work progressed, albeit with regular

interruptions from Dad and Carole’s around Australia off-road trips and desert treks! Bare chassis, suspension

and driveline components were repaired, reconditioned and painted to the highest standard of finish possible.

Luckily the truck was largely intact and still retains its original panels, driveline, tray body and components.

The original engine is largely untouched and runs very smoothly and quietly. Eventually, some ten years after

the purchase of the truck the epic restoration is now finished and the results are spectacular – if we may say so

ourselves! Congratulations to Dad and his helpers for the great result. Below: Finished Restoration 2012

Unfortunately Ken Franks did not get to see the completion of the truck, sadly passing away in March 2012.

Now that the truck is finished it will be making regular rally and show appearances so keep an eye out for it!

Some excerpts from the General Meeting held on 20th

July 2012.

Business arising from Minutes of Committee Meeting:

- D Brown will now write to St Johns cancelling our booking for the rally as we have our own 1st Aid

- T Brodie has contacted the HDAA by email concerning hire of the Showground for the rally, but has

no reply yet.

- Rally dinner tickets are now on sale at $15.00 adults, $10.00 children under 12.

- R Gear is coordinating the display at the ST Ives Heavy Horse Spectacular on 18-19 August. He is

hoping for a good turnout, as we are being paid a donation.

- An example of the new rally flier in colour was shown. We will arrange for some to be printed in-

house.

- The Gate Roster was about half filled. Members were invited to add their names.

- There remain about 20 unfinancial members.

- Non-notification to the Registrar by members undertaking trips in Club registered vehicles was

discussed further. It was agreed to place a strongly worded note in the newsletter.

- Purchase of four new banners was agreed to.

- The Committee’s suggestion of our reserving 60M of space at Mudgee was increased to 120M after

some simple calculations.

Sub-Committee Reports:

Registrar: S Muscat reported that there were a total of 103 Club registered vehicles. This includes 5

motorbikes and a few trailers.

Rally: Arrangements for the ‘Clarendon Classic’ were discussed. Rubber belting has been arranged for

crossing of roads. Steam engines cannot run on sealed roads. A D8 and D7 are coming but will be unloaded

direct into the compound. It was agreed the whole rally layout needs to be revised to provide more space for

rotary hoes and Brendan Bullen, and for trucks. Public parking needs to be separated from the exhibitors’

parking area, with more policing and signage, or danger tape which is easier to put up. Layout to be reviewed

at the next Committee Meeting. We ran out of ringlock fencing and star pickets last year. A Pettitt offered

about 30. P Eggers will look for more second hand ones. On the motion of P Eggers seconded B Munro, it

was agreed to purchase an additional 30, and 100m of ringlock fencing. L Winney was nominated to

purchase the fencing from Metal and More or McGraths Hill Auctions. It was noted that members who sell

goods will not be charged a site fee.

Rally Tractor Trek: It will be a 7.00am start. C Fotheringham will provide the itinerary if asked.

Ploughing Day at UWS: The site remains very wet and if there is further rain, there could be a problem. The

Certificate of Insurance needs to be emailed.

Reports: I Browning reported he and Eddie Peterson had taken tractors to the reopening of Dural Tyrepower

the previous Saturday. There was an interesting display of cars etc.

R Gear reported the Model & Hobby Show was a good couple of days, but he ran a bearing in the trolley of

his traction engine.

General Business:

- Two steam traction engines are expected to attend our rally, but ‘Sooty’ needs to be taken up to

Maitland before the Cranky Handle Rally which is on 27-28 October. On the motion of S Muscat

seconded R Gear it was agreed we will provide free meals if they attend.

- It was noted the ‘Cranky Handle’ rally was not on our Events Calendar. It will be added.

- It was reported membership stands at 327, plus some not yet financial.

- T Brodie stated he had been offered the use of a 12m x 12m marquee at Mudgee for $200 hire. It may

be necessary to advise the organizers as the layout will have to accommodate it. On the motion of R

Gear seconded P Woodmore, it was agreed to take up the offer. We will advertise in the newsletter the

availability of under-cover space for exhibits.

- The new notice board was pointed out, and current information has been placed on it.

- A Pettitt spoke of his candidacy for the forthcoming council elections and sought volunteers to hand

out how-to-vote papers at polling booths.

- Members spoke of S Warby starring in the ‘Classic Restos’ programme on Tuesday nights on TVS.
