good time - costumes, parades, live music and zany goings-on in both the Village and at Holiday Valley Resort. You won’t want to miss one of the wackiest parades ever on Saturday March 9th at 6:30 p.m. right down the main drag. The parade is once again free for all to participate, so get your group together, get a theme and get involved by calling the chamber office. Let’s make this year’s the biggest parade ever, okay? The Villager will continue it’s tradition of making our presence at the annual procession – once again we have teamed with the world’s favorite groundhog straight from Punxsutawney, PA! That’s right, our neighbor Punxsutawney Phil will be here will bells (or should I say, “beads”) on to help us celebrate another successful season. So make sure you keep an eye open for him… Meanwhile, whether you’re a skier or just an interested observer, you simply must head over to Holiday Valley this weekend! Cookouts, face-

painting, a scavenger hunt, snow pony and cardboard box racing, and the ever-popular Snow Bar at Yodeler will all keep you entertained on Saturday. Sunday brings the colorful costume competition and my favorite – the “Dummy Downhill” - at the base of Yodeler. If you’ve never seen this, you’re missing out! Talk about photo ops galore! And I’ve got a funny feeling the “wearin’ of the green” will be a common theme throughout the festivities this weekend. Being half Irish meself, I’ll certainly be searching my closet for green Mardi Gras beads and my matching Irish ensemble; St. Pattie’s Day is just down the road don’t cha know. “Slainte” to you and your’s, to be sure! So, dear readers, you better rest up and prepare for one heckuva good time this week! Remember the old Irish proverb that says, “A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in a doctor’s book.” Here’s hoping you get both! Until next week… JZ

Approximately 700 students from Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES and district special education classes participated in the eighth annual Winter Carnival at the Holiday Valley Tubing Park on March 5th and 6th, 2013. From 9AM to 1 PM, six activity areas were offered to the students. According to event coordinators Chris McNell and Debbie Golley, the carnival featured tubing, snow soccer, an obstacle course, broom hockey

and indoor games. Hayrides were also available, courtesy of Pumpkinville. “This is a great day for our kids who might not normally have some of these opportunities,” said Golley. Students came from Allegany Limestone, Hinsdale, Olean, Portville, West Valley, Olean Area BOCES, Portville BOCES, Bolivar Richburg, Ellicottville, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Fillmore, Pioneer, Wellsville, Allegany Area BOCES, Pioneer Area BOCES, Lakeshore,

Elementary, middle and high school students participated, with nearly 300 volunteers assisting over the two-day event. Student volunteers from Ellicottville Central School and the Ellicottville BOCES Center assisted with the event. The participants included students from all 22 componentschool districts in Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES. The Holiday Valley Tubing Company is located at 5673 Bryant Hill Road in Ellicottville.

It has been a February-like start to the month of March and HoliMont has been loving every moment of it. The snow accumulation over Sunday March 3rd and Monday the 4th was not only enough to coat the area in a frosty-white hue but also had powder hounds out in full force as they looked to take advantage of the unexpected snowfall. One thing that is expected in the month of March is the arrival of Canadian Spring Break (March 11th – 15th), this year known as HoliBreak here at HoliMont. The Canadian Spring Break always makes for a fun and exciting time here at HoliMont as many of our neighbors to the north flock to Ellicottville for a week of snow sports, fun, and relaxation. On Sunday, March 10th, there is a kick-off HoliBreak party where Only Humen will be rockin’ the Chalet from 3pm to 6pm. People will have the opportunity to sign up for things like the HoliBreak Volleyball tournament (outdoors on a court of snow), the Bump Contest (Wednesday at 1pm), the Family Race (Thursday at 1:30pm), and the Euchre Tournament

(Thursday at 3pm). This year the organizers of HoliBreak have outdone themselves in terms of activities in and around the Chalet. While many of the events are geared toward the kids, there is plenty of fun for all ages in store next week. Every day during the week there will be coloring contests (for the young or just young of heart – awards for all ages), Bingo (every afternoon at 3:15pm the cafeteria turns into a competitive bingo zone – cards are $1 each or 7 for $5), Bombardier drops (test your skills at dropping tennis balls into a barrel off of the Exhibition Express lift – balls can be purchased daily starting at 11:45am for $1). Have you ever wanted to take a ride in a Sno-Cat? Well on Tuesday and Wednesday you will have your chance. From 4:45pm – 5:45pm HoliMont will be offering groomer rides up the T-Bar Run. Tickets are $5 and must be purchased in advance. There is limited space so purchase your tickets early. This event is weather permitting. The Family Volleyball tournament starts on Monday and then the finals are on

Wednesday. Tuesday the “Open” Volleyball tournament will begin and the finals for that will take place on Thursday. There will also be a Candy Hunt for the kids and a karaoke/HoliBreak Idol après ski contest in the afternoon at 3pm. Wednesday is “One Piece Wednesday” where there will be some great prizes for the best vintage ski outfit. There is also a hotdog/sausage lunch that day from 11:30am – 1:30pm and an après ski party where a HoliMont favorite, The Party Squad will have the Chalet in full party-mode. On Friday, be sure to swing by HoliMont and go up to Carpenter’s Corners from 12pm – 1pm for Maple Syrup Taffy. The taffy debuted last season and was an instant crowd pleaser. All that and more will be taking place throughout the week. It’s sure to be a lively one here at HoliMont and we’re looking forward to it. As always, HoliMont is open to non-members every Monday – Friday* so feel free to stop by and check out the festivities during HoliBreak. *Excluding the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Following is a letter to the editor submitted to the Olean Times Herald on behalf of the Olean General Hospital Board of Directors by Daniel McCune, Board Chair, and Brenda McGee, Board Vice Chair. Dear Mr. Eckstrom, On behalf of the Board of Directors of Olean General hospital, we are responding to recent headlines in the Olean Times Herald which have brought a great deal of attention to the insulin pen issue involving the Hospital. Most recently, an article entitles “Trio of Suits Filed Against Hospital” made reference to lawsuits filed against the Hospital by three former patients. The article contains a

number of baseless assertions by the attorney representing the plaintiffs that are clearly intended to sensationalize the matter and negatively impact the Hospital. Olean General Hospital, upon first learning of the issues surrounding the use of insulin pens, voluntarily took it upon itself to notify patients who may have been impacted. The Hospital has been nothing but honest and forthcoming about the issue with both patients and the press. It is clear that the Hospital’s first priority is the health and well being of the patients and community it serves. To suggest anything to the contrary would be nothing

short of careless and self-serving. At the end of the day, we are confident that it will be proven that the Hospital did no harm to any patient. Despite the persistent attempts to impugn its reputation, we hope the community appreciates Olean General Hospital’s commitment to providing exceptional healthcare. Olean General Hospital has been an integral part of this community’s fabric for over 115 years and remains true to its belief that this region deserves a local hospital dedicated to quality, integrity and caring. Sincerely, Daniel McCune & Brenda McGee

Westfall, Aidan Wilson, Stone Wilson and Molly Woodarek. The show is directed by Jaye Zelko and Pat Waldron; choreography by Elizabeth Weber and produced by Crystal Wilder. Bye Bye Birdie is a satire that takes place in 1958 and centers around an Elvis Presley type rock and roll superstar Conrad Birdie (Quinn O’Rourke) who is drafted into the army. His agent and songwriter Albert Peterson (Calum Watt) and Albert’s secretary and love interest Rosie Alvarez (Bre Coolidge) plan a farewell performance for Birdie on the Ed Sullivan television show, which they hope will provide the publicity to sell his new song “One Last Kiss” and bring Albert’s company out of debt. At the conclusion of the performance, Birdie will give a real kiss to a lucky girl from his fan club. The lucky girl, randomly chosen, is Kim MacAfee (Ciara

Peters) from Sweet Apple, Ohio, and is an avid member of the local Conrad Birdie fan club. Albert and Rosie come to Sweet Apple to prepare for Birdie’s arrival and things begin to unravel. Kim’s father Harry MacAfee (Tanner Gregory) begins to get excited about the thought of being on the Ed Sullivan Show with his daughter and Kim’s new steady Hugo Peabody (Alex Delity) starts to get jealous of the thought of Kim kissing Birdie on national television. After Birdie’s arrival in Sweet Apple, things continue to come undone as Birdie’s charms enrage Hugo to punch him out on national television as he embraces to kiss Kim. Later, Birdie confesses that he is tired of show business and goes out on the town with the kids to show them how to party. This leads to Birdie’s arrest. Meanwhile, Rosie is getting tired of waiting for Albert to propose and figures that eight years is long enough. She is also tired of Albert’s domineering mother Mae Peterson (Olivia Venezia) who is constantly interfering in their relationship. Rosie goes out on the town and stumbles into a Shriner’s meeting, leading to a humorous ballet sequence. The show ends with Albert bailing Birdie out of jail prompting Birdie to ask Albert to be his agent forever as he gets on the train to New York and his induction into the army. Kim and Hugo make up as Hugo proposes to Kim and Albert finally decides to propose to Rosie to tie up the remaining romantic knot before the show’s finale.

Odyssey Of The Mind 5 Teams Prepare For The Regional Competition in Wellsville; Mar. 9th

This year we have five teams competing in the regional competition in Wellsville on March 9th – two elementary teams, two middle school teams, and one high school team. The coaches chose a long-term problem for their teams to solve. These solutions are very involved and take months to perfect. The teams also prepare for another part of the competition called Spontaneous. This is the ”think on your feet” part of the competition.

Patti Crist is well known in Ellicottville. A successful realtor with an outgoing and likable personality, she’s lived and worked here since 1981 and loved every minute of it. Patti is also a devoted community volunteer, always ready to step in and help out the Chamber of Commerce with yearly events like Summer Music Fest, Fall Fest, Jazz Fest and Winter Carnival weekend just to name a few. Of all the Ellicottville festivals and events she’s involved with, Patti thoroughly enjoys and goes all out for Winter Carnival and the Saturday night Mardi Gras parade. Her husband Chuck was a pro football player with the New Orleans Saints for a few years back in the 70’s and Patti got an early exposure to the fun of Mardi Gras while they were living in New Orleans. She fell in love with all the colors, the sounds, the people, the outrageous costumes and

“It’s like my child,” is the way Jeanine Zimmer describes The Villager, the paper she has published for the past seven years. And like so many offspring, its inception has taken a bit of a circuitous route. The Jamestown native intended to major in art at UB, but instead followed the advice of her parents and focused on media and advertising instead. Though not in the art program, Jeanine persisted, used her apartment as a studio, stretched her own canvases, and managed to produce several one-woman shows at various galleries and restaurants in Buffalo. Upon graduation, she decided rather than struggle as the typical starving artist, why not help other artists promote their work? Only one month after graduating from college, she started Ar’te-fakt magazine, a monthly journal devoted to the arts and entertainment. Living in Jamestown at the time,

that wonderful good time party atmosphere and has tried to capture and relive it every year since. Patti is also one of the original organizers of Ellicottville’s wildly fun and colorful Mardi Gras Parade, and has a ton of fond memories which span over 20 years since its debut in 1993. Probably her fondest memories are of Ken Brown who for all those years was the reigning King of every parade. The parade King and Queen are chosen every year by a super secret conclave of nearer-do-wells in a local real estate office, who use a complicated formula known only to insiders to make their decision - or something like that… Every year a different Queen was picked, and it just so happens, that Ken Brown was picked every year as King. Patti herself was chosen one year and in her words “one time was more than enough for me!” According to Patti, “picking Ken as the King every year was a no brainer – nobody came close to matching his colorful, high energy personality and outrageous costumes.” Ken was well known for his love of colorful and loud costumes which included all manner of accessories like his brightly colored ski boots, giant sun glasses, giant gloves and all sorts of beads and flowers strewn over his exterior. Ken was also known to resort to other types of more technically advanced personal decorations such as stilts and the use of a portable generator to power up a giant coat of light bulbs! Patti says that along with Ken’s outrageous costumes, “He was also well known for his love of helping others and always finding a way to get kids participating and involved with his many projects.” Sadly, Ken passed away last year and this year the new King is still waiting to be crowned. In order to pay tribute to, and

honor their beloved past King, Patti and the other parade organizers are hoping to have a big “tribute dance” on the street at the end of the parade this year for Ken. They’re not quite sure what the music or dance will be yet, (Gangnam Style? Harlem Shake?) but they are hoping that everyone on the sidelines, and those participating in the parade - will jump in and start dancing at the very end. Patti said it would be a fitting way to remember their old friend and she thinks “Ken would have loved to see this!” Ken Brown was a genuine treasure and Patti hopes this good man gets a rousing tribute worthy of the King he truly was. This year’s Mardi Gras Parade is on Saturday, March 9th, 2013 and begins at 6:30pm in the Village. Of course it’s a completely free event and prides itself on being family friendly. For more information, or if you would like to register as a participant in the parade, contact the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce at 716-699-5046 or visit their web site at www.ellicottvilleny.com.

The Villager Newspaper’s First Issue, Published on March 2, 2006

she produced the publication on her home computer, and invested $500 to print the first 500 copies in June 2001. After loading the first editions in her car, she drove to Buffalo to establish distribution, drawing on the market knowledge she gained while working as a student intern. Jeanine was able to convince local businesses to purchase ads in her new, innovative magazine. She later moved to Ellicottville and fell in love with the community, the resort area and the fast-growing business/entertainment scene. She was among the first to see that a regionally based magazine devoted to the local art, music, and theatre scene would be successful. These days, virtually every major population center has its own arts and lifestyle magazine, but back then Jeanine was trying something new. By 2005, her distribution region grew to include the tri-state area, covering WNY, NW Pennsylvania and NE Ohio. In 2005 Zimmer moved her base to Cleveland, expanding the coverage and distribution of Ar’te-fakt beyond Buffalo, Jamestown, Fredonia, Erie PA, and eventually to the Finger Lakes region. She still pretty much did everything herself – she was the publisher, editor, distributor, contributing writer, interviewer, photographer, business manager, marketing and advertising – you get the idea! Days were spent behind the wheel of her car, making contacts, sourcing stories and going to meetings. “I put my miles in,” she says with a laugh. “But I wouldn’t trade those days for anything – some of the people I met on the road are my staunchest supporters today.” It was a desire to get off the road and return to Ellicottville that fueled her decision to start The Villager. The first office was in a small corner of Rustic Blues (then Gone Wild Creations) on Mill St. To introduce the paper to the town she held an open house

on Valentines Day 2006 and the first issue came out March 2nd of that year. Like Ar’te-fakt, the paper concentrates on local music and entertainment venues. Although The Villager is a resort town paper, guiding visitors to the local attractions, Zimmer is very mindful that she serves a community, its people and its businesses. “We know each other and appreciate locals and tourists, alike. We all see each other at the post office. We’re a tight knit community that thrives in the tourist market.” “The Villager certainly wouldn’t be a success if it wasn’t for my dedicated staff of creative and hard-working helpers. I guess I’ve been very fortunate over the years to manage to find people who share my passion for this paper. It’s the shared vision and their talents I owe my greatest thanks to”. “And of course, our readership shares in the success, as well. Their feedback, both positive and not-so, helps immeasurably in our quest to provide the best publication we can possibly print. Without the readers, we’d have no reason to exist.” Still pursuing her passion for art, Jeanine has opened a gallery, AH!, in Bemus Point, where she also publishes the Lakeside Edition of the Villager for the Chautauqua Lake Region. This venture has brought Ar’te-fakt full circle in that Zimmer reconnected with several of the featured artists who now have their works on display at AH! It would be tempting to say that Zimmer has established a mini publishing empire, but she is still focused on her primary mission, to make The Villager, a “small resort community newspaper”, the best it can be. “Like any good mom, I’m trying to make sure our local paper will be smart, informed, fun, and attractive. What else can a mother do”? Well, Happy Birthday, Villager – may you have many, many more birthdays to come!

Festival number two of 2013, Mardi Gras & Winter Carnival Weekend, is here. March, like February, is screaming by and the skiing at both Holiday Valley and Holimont is pretty darn good. This will be another of the really FUN weekends that are provided for us by The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce and further enhanced be Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival. Check out these two websites, www.holidayvalley.com and wwwellicottvilleny.com for more details. One more thing before we get going, Robby and I wish to say Happy Birthday to two of our grandchildren Caroline on March eleven and Devin, March thirteen. “We wish a Very Happy Birthday to both of you”. Like most festival weeks, our music and other FUN STUFF is also quite good. Starting today Thursday March 7, 2013 through Wednesday March 13, 2013 we will have fourteen Bands, six DJ’s doing seven gigs, two of which will include a Karaoke Show, The Ellicottville Mardi Gras Parade, plus all the great food and beverage specials that happen in our excellent clubs and eateries making Ellicottville the FUN place to be. THURSDAY starts the week with two bands and a DJ plus a Karaoke show. The FUN begins at 8:00 PM in The Gin Mill with Fred & Tuck doing their neat and good time acoustic, folk rock to country music show. Excellent cover tunes, that are done in their unique style, will, as always, create a really FUN Gin Mill Music Night. Like every week all winter, at 9:00 PM Thursday, Madigans and The Party Squad will enhance our week of music here in Ellicottville. Buffalo’s Premier Party Rock Band, The Party Squad will do a wonderful night of classic rock tunes in Madigans Up-Stairs Party Bar. Mark and Dave for sure and maybe Rick, Joe, and or Nelson are this week’s version of The Party Squad. FUN will be Happenin in Madigans this Thursday. Also at 9:00 PM Thursday, The PUB in Great Valley will be host to DJ Felony and his Karaoke Show. As always, this neat show gives The PUB Patrons two options. Be part of the gig or just kick back and enjoy The Local & FUN PUB Good Times. FRIDAY, Mardi Gras’ good times really start to roll with three bands and two DJ’s. We begin at 5:00 PM in Balloons with Rt 66 back on their music stage. Rt. 66, a multiple winner of several Buffalo music awards, was here last month. They are a veteran and excellent, oldies, disco to classic rock band that is very crowd involved and is another of the FUN loving groups that, thanks to Balloons, we get to enjoy here in Ellicottville. Balloons will be ROCKIN again. Following Rt. 66, DJ Flakey Frank Watson,

Ellicottville’s Party Monster will keep the party going from Balloon Sound & Light Booth. Frank has escaped from The Disoriented DJ Home and so far The Home Management has chosen not to pursue him. This will allow his off-the wall sense of humor, neat tune selection and all ages friendly conversation show to happen till close. Returning to 8:00 PM Friday Leon & The Forklifts will be performing in Madigans Up-Stairs Party Bar. This four-piece group bills themselves as “The Sultans of Swing, Rock N’ Roll and The Blues”. They have played in most of the popular venues in Buffalo and did a Madigans gig last January, which was excellent. Madigans, for sure, will be a really FUN music and party venue this Friday night. Then at 9:00 PM Friday, Three Easy Pieces will have The Gin Mill Music Lovers enjoying another neat night of music & good times. Three Easy Pieces, consisting of RT Live, Freddie Joseph and Jeff Johnson have put together a FUN, acoustic, classic to southern rock with a taste of country, band. Their excellent tune mix and presentation will, for sure, make another FUN Gin Mill Friday Music happen. Also at 9:00 PM Friday, DJ NQ will be back on duty in The Depot for his second tour of neat tune selection and FUN promotion. DJ NQ’s show will also kick off The Depot’s Mardi Gras weekend of excellent drink specials and really FUN Times. Moving to Saturday a five band, two DJs, Winter Carnival and Parade afternoon and evening. The FUN begins at 4:00 PM in two locations. First Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival will be happening and The Yodeler Lodge Upstairs Bar will have 10 Delaware doing their neat cover classic rock show consisting of tunes the last thirty years or so. This four-piece group puts a bit of their own twist on things, creating even more good listening. So enjoy a day of skiing then relax in Yodeler Lodge’s Upstairs Bar while taking in the tunes 10 Delaware does so well. Also at 4:00 PM Saturday, The Black Widow Band will be on stage in Balloons. With Lana on lead vocals, this great band performs one of the most diverse, interesting and totally FUN gigs we ever see or hear in Ellicottville. They do everything from classic rock to country and oldies to alternative or contemporary rock. Their version of Journey is the best. The Black Widow Band will have The Balloons Crowd enjoying life. When they finish, DJ Flakey Frank, The Party Monster, continues on his escape mode from The Disoriented DJ Home and will return to Balloons Sound & Light Booth with his neat tune selection, off the wall humor and bazaar chit/chat till close. Then at 6:30 PM Saturday The Mardi Gras Parade sponsored by Ellicottville’s Chamber of Commerce will happen on Washington Street here in The Village. Moving to 9:00 PM Saturday when two bands will be performing. First The Depot, as part of their Mardi Gras celebration will have The Hollow Body Band doing their neat Rock Show. This Kane PA band uses hollow body guitars in a manor that has the rock show they do very well applauded by the Kane music lovers. Back in the village at 9:00 PM The Gin Mill will have Live & Kickin in house, doing

their unique Live Music for all Occasions show. This three-piece party and rock band plays to the desires of their audience. Their main focus, besides creating a good party time, is classic rock. However, depending on the desires of The Gin Mill Crowd, they may venture into other areas of music. The Gin Mill will enjoy FUN this Saturday. Then at 10:00 PM Saturday Chance The DJ will return to duty in Madigans UP-Stairs Party Bar playing his neat selection of ROCKIN PARTY TUNES till close. Moving to 11:00 PM Saturday, The Ellicottville Brewing Company will have The MoJo Hand back and doing their “In Yer face, house rockin, bum Kickin electric blues” show. For this gig MoJo Hand will feature Fontilla Timmons on vocals. This neat band is still an inhabitant of a neglected corner of the music universe, and will put on a really Unique & FUN EBC Blues Show. SUNDAY, the weekend rounds out with two DJ’s. First at 1:00 PM Personable DJ John Barry will be doing his LIVE Personality Show Off Show on Holiday Valley’s Yodeler Lodge Champaign Deck as part of The Winter Carnival Finally. Then at 9:00 PM Chance The DJ will be set up in Madigans Downstairs Party Bar playing his neat ROCKIN tunes and offering a Karaoke Gig for those who wish to be a part of the show. So again, Karaoke Rules. Wow, what a weekend and the FUN continues on to MONDAY when we have three long-standing meal specials and two music gigs. First The Gin Mill will have two meal specials. One being their wonderful spaghetti dinner. Number two will be their special stuffed steak roll. Adding to that at 7:00 PM, The Gin Mill will have The Touch of Grae returning to do their acoustic southern rock to country music show. This is one of the best shows of it’s kind we get to see here. Rooster and Company are great and make a good music time happen. Crasher Conner will be on bar duty for even more FUN. Balloons Monday Delights will again be their great pizza and fifty cent wings plus their happy hour drink specials. Domino Derrick and Lovely Tiffany will be on bar duty and will again make all of these great meals and FUN times even better. Monday’s second music gig will take place at 10:00 PM in Madigans with Jack London Doing Pink Monday. Gary London, as Jack London, will again be doing his acoustic version of Pink Floyd creating a neat and FUN Madigans Music Night. WEDNESDAY, our music week ends with two gigs. First at 7:00 PM Balloons will have The Haybalers doing their unique blend of honky-tonk, bluegrass and hard-driving rock N roll. Neat tunes done in true Rock A Billy style is what this FUN band is all about. So stop by Balloons on Wednesday for an interesting honky tonk music night Then at 8:00 PM The Gin Mill will have Joe Wagner &Friends doing their traditional folk to southern rock show. Joe’s friends this week will probably include Bongos Freddie, Retro Lil Joey and maybe Gary London. Who ever joins Joe, for sure will make for another FUN Gin Mill Music Night. C U Round The Music Scene. Good Stuff. No Worries.

This Weekend Throughout the Village and the Slopes ‘Punxsutawney Phil’ that famous groundhog from our PA neighbors, will be one of the many ‘stars’ of the Annual Mardi Gras parade on the evening of March 9th (his float is sponsored by The Villager Newspaper). The parade is the highlight of the Ellicottville Winter Carnival weekend taking place March 9-10 in the Village of Ellicottville and on the slopes of Holiday Valley Ski Resort. If you have been around Ellicottville for a while, you know the man who was the very first ‘KING of Ellicottville’… KEN BROWN was the most colorful, most generous, and most beloved ‘KING’ of the Mardi Gras parade for many years. His warm and jovial manner was cloaked in his bright-colored cape worn in ‘reigning’ fashion over his shoulders, surrounded with more beads than are sold in every store in Catt County! He was a

true ‘KING’ and symbolized the Great Spirit and ‘party-town’ fun that has become Ellicottville. This year there will be a special float in the parade dedicated to the memory of the man who will always be “KING KEN”. “The Mardi Gras parade is just wild and zany fun for all ages - even our dog loves it!”, commented Dan Lee, owner of Anew Beginning Spa in the village. “You never know what to expect next”! Layers of beaded and masked spectators, in true Mardi Gras fashion line Washington Street to watch the parade each year. But HEY!.. wouldn’t it be a blast to be IN the parade this year?? Come on... ‘It’s JUST FUN’! Grab some friends and throw on some costumes or build a float with lights and sounds and a bunch of people, or just dress up in Mardi Gras fashion by yourself and enter the parade like the young man, Michael from Canton, Ohio does every year, and march along with all of the other ‘wild and crazy’ parade participants. And the best part is... There is NO entrance fee-it’s FREE! And you may even win one of the great prizes, which will be awarded for ‘Best Mardi Gras Theme’, ‘Most Creative Entry’ or ‘The Funniest’ or ‘Best

Overall Float’! Prizes will include a two-hour wine and cheese sailboat cruise, four Holiday Valley Mountain Coaster Rides, Kayak Lessons with free rentals, and the highly coveted prize... ‘Be A Brewer for a Day’ from the Ellicottville Brewing Company. But that’s only one of two parades. Sunday features the costume parade down the slope at Mardi Gras hill at Holiday Valley Resort. “People get dressed in all kinds of crazy outfits. They go up to the top of Mardi Gras and ski down the slope, and there’s judging. The top adult and top child in the parade each win a season pass for next year, which is over $800 value. And there are prizes for singles, groups, and mixed groups, with a lot of different categories. The things that people come up with are pretty funny!” Other returning favorites are the Dummy Downhill at Yodeler, Sunday at 2 p.m., and the big Snowbar, which is also at Yodeler (12-4:30 both days). A list of activities can be found on the events page of the Holiday Valley web site and a full schedule of the weekend can be found on page A-9 of this publication.

long time, since the late 1800’s. HoliMont will celebrate the sport on Friday March 8th, when TeleFest takes to the slopes and woods. Dash Hegeman, marketing director at HoliMont, is enthusiastic about the event. He notes that while Telemark skiing has been around for quite some time, it was approximately six years ago that HoliMont saw an upward swing in the number of Tele skiers who were coming to “free their heels” at HoliMont. “That is when it was decided to start TeleFest.” Offering clinics is the strength of the HoliMont TeleFest, according to Jerry Tkaczyk, one of the coordinators. The other coordinator is Adele Wellman. Registration is at 9 a.m., with clinics to follow. The clinics are offered for beginners, intermediate, and

advanced levels. After lunch, the clinics continue for another hour and a half. Pkaczyk says, “There is also a fun Tele race that goes on in the afternoon. We are very fortunate that business sponsors throughout the area have come through with donations to a raffle.” Tkaczyk notes that all HoliMont Tele instructors are all certified Nordic Tele instructors. Jay Nation, a certified Tele demonstration team member, will be the headliner for the HoliMont TeleFest. Raw beginners can sign up and learn how to do the sport. Instructors will split the skiers into small groups. People who have been doing the sport on their own but want instruction on how to do it properly can take advantage of the opportunity. “And then the advanced skiers tear around through the woods and the bumps.” Members taking part in TeleFest are coming from Ontario, Pennsylvania, and across New York State. Hegeman explains the appeal in that the free-heel lifestyle is all about going back

to some of the roots of skiing and getting closer (literally) to the snow. “Telemarkers are not restricted by bindings that keep their feet entirely glued to the ski. By raising a heel and flexing at the knee, the telemarker is able to see the slopes from an entirely different perspective.” The evening is marked by the Torch Light Parade, which according to Hegeman is a sight to remember. HoliMont members ride to the top of the Exhibition Express and are given a torch to carry down Exhibition. “It creates a very nice visual for anyone watching from the bottom.” Members who want to participate should show up with their Member pass at 7 p.m. Loading starts at 7:15, and the parade starts at 7:30. You must be at least ten years old to participate. While snowboarders are allowed in the parade, they cannot be issued a torch. Everyone is welcome to come to TeleFest. According to Hegeman, “Anyone who is a fan of the sport or has always wanted to give it a try is encouraged to come check it out.”

Not only can participants in Holiday Valley’s Guns and Hoses Snowmakers Race have fun at next week’s event, but they will also raise money for Mercy Flight. Jane Eshbaugh of Holiday Valley said the 13th annual race will be held at 10 a.m. March 16 on Cindy’s Run of the resort. “It’s a fun end of the year event for snowmakers,” she said, adding the event also supports a good cause.

It features a slalom race through gates. Participating teams carry hoses and hook them up to snowmaking hydrants. A cook-out and awards ceremony finish off the day. “It’s fun to watch,” she said, adding local firefighting crews have been asked to participate, along with resort teams. Although there is an entry fee for them, she said, suppliers have also donated to the event since it is a fundraiser. Mrs. Eshbaugh said the resort began hosting the event after Holiday Valley crews went elsewhere to similar events and thought it would be great to have one at Holiday Valley. That started the fun that now sees about 40 or more participants. Not only do participating teams and viewers have fun, but Mercy

Flight will also benefit. According to Mercy Flight’s website, it is an independent, non-profit emergency medical transport provider. Begun in 1981, crews have flown 20,000 patient missions in 30 years, responding to those in need of being flown for medical care. Its crews respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week out of bases in Buffalo, Olean and Batavia. Mercy Fight consists of 26 paramedics, 27 nurses, 13 pilots, 9 aircraft communication specialists, six aircraft mechanics and an administrative team. They work closely with police, hospitals and more to help those in need of medical attention, flying them to where their medical needs can be met.

Bob Duke, manager and “Single Malt Guru” says he is more than willing to consult with or assist customers in the selection and purchase of a Single Malt Scotch that best fits their taste and price range. Bob has a vast knowledge of the complicated distilling process and knows well the subtle and

not so subtle differences found in the many brands of Single Malt Scotch available today. He also enjoys teaching what he knows about Scotch and is hosting an educational seminar, or ‘Scotch Tasting’ this Friday evening March 8th at 7:30pm at the store on Monroe St. Owner of E-Ville Spirits & Wines, Shannon Carscallen, is well known for her extensive selection of excellent wines at a good price, but her selection of Single Malt Scotch whisky’s at a good price is equally extensive and one of the

largest in Western New York. Brands such as Glenlivet, Glenmorangie, Highland Park and Oban are a small sampling of the many Single Malt Scotch whisky’s on their shelves. Bob Duke has hosted quite a few other ‘Scotch Tasting’ seminars in the past and recommends that you make reservations as soon as possible for Friday’s event because they fill up quickly. To reserve a spot or contact Bob Duke for more information call 716-699-4474 or email him at: [email protected]

★ ★ Sudoku Challenge ★ ★To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution.

Ken Brown 700 Club Fundraiser Last Saturday at HV’s Yodeler Lodge

Every year for the past 12 years or so, a group of fun loving and kind hearted, over-aged skiers have gotten together and thrown a big party to raise money to help out local charities. They call themselves the Ken Brown 700 Club and the only requirements to join this troupe of merry makers is that you be over 70 years old, love to ski and have a generous spirit. Their motto is: “Help us to Help Others”, and help others they certainly have! Over the years, the club has raised thousands of dollars and put it straight into the hands of several local charitable organizations. Photos/Gary Kinn

It isn’t often you get a chance to get in on the ground floor of a singular development. Just a few minutes from downtown Ellicottville is the beautiful town of Great Valley. There in the shadow of the nearby hills, on the old Kent farm a new subdivision is being created. But unlike so many developments that consist of postage stamp lots, and cookie cutter houses, here everything will be custom. The Kent farm is well known to the old timers in the area, once tall corn stalks reached upward towards the sun. The farm did well for the Kent

family, but Mr. Kent stopped working the farm some years ago, and now wants to divide up the land and allow people to build on the lots. The majority of the property available lies between Christian Hollow and Mutton Hollow roads. The lots will range from 2.8 to 16 acres. The total acreage of the land is 224, and the entire parcel can be yours for just under $1.5 million. Both hilltop and flat land lots are for sale. The hilltop estate lots will be 10 acres or more and have beautiful views. All the roads will be private. The old farmhouse and the out buildings, including the stables are part of the sale. That parcel would make an excellent equestrian center. There is

even a two-acre pond that is stocked with fish. For those who might want to develop the entire property, the land sits on an aquifer, and there is a gas well. Eventually the development should rival the Greer Hill area by HoliMont, with million dollar homes on generous lots. Carl Calarco from Mark Allianello’s engineering firm in Ellicottville has done all the details on the final plat. The plans have been approved by the Great Valley Planning Board, and await only the signature of the head of the board to move forward. This truly is a chance to get in on the very beginning of what is sure to become one of Western New York’s premier developments. Time is flying. For more information on this property contact Larry and Louise Oeffling of Ellicottville Real Estate. 716-699-6748

Huge Animal RescueEmpire Animal Rescue Society (EARS) Needs Your Help!

There are many people in our area who love the Winter and all that it has to offer with the wonderful activities including tubing, skating, snowmobiling and, of course, skiing. There are also those of us that like to take in the wonderful winter scenery behind the comfort of a big picture window with a nice cup of cocoa. For the volunteers at Empire Animal Rescue Society (EARS) neither option was a possibility in recent days. We received a call that there were animals left in an unheated house from which the resident had just been removed. We were able to gain access to the house with the help of the local dog control officer and knew immediately that we had to help. The first time one of our volunteers entered she was able to catch 3 kittens but it quickly became apparent that this task was going to be much harder than we were expecting and prepared for. We were told that there were an estimated 40 animals in the house and we went back the next morning to start the rescue operation. Over the course of the next 5 days we were able to trap 74 cats and kittens from this single location! We found newborn kittens in more than one area in the house and we soon had every available kennel full and each of our limited number of foster homes committed to doing everything we could for these poor animals. We also rescued a number of very pregnant mothers to be so we won’t know the final rescue count for a short time. As of March 1st the cat/kitten count is up to 89 with more still to come. Keep in mind that we are a very small foster group. There were cats/kittens in the furniture, in the ceiling, and even in the old gas heater! This is by far the largest rescue we have ever been involved in and we are asking for help to support us in this tremendous effort. We are in desperate

Local concrete contractor Tom Lowry is going to be featured in an article in the national contracting magazine; Equipment World. He’s being spotlighted not so much for the jobs he’s done, but for what he puts in his trucks. “I figured maybe they were going to send me on a cruise or something,” he said about the call from the publisher. But in fact they wanted his opinion on the brand of motor oil he’s using in his equipment. In his concrete business he uses light-duty machinery: three trucks,

need of cat litter, litter boxes, litter box scoopers, canned cat food, paper towels, bleach, laundry detergent, large size garbage bags, cleaning spray, and monetary donations to help us pay for vetting services and necessary medications for all of the animals. Each animal we take in is fully vetted including de-wormed, flea treated, vaccinated including booster shots and rabies and, of course, spayed or neutered before we adopt them out. Each cat rescued from this one home will cost our group over a hundred dollars to pay for its vet care alone. This does not include costs for the daily care and needs of these cats and kittens. Empire Animal Rescue Society is an Incorporated 501c3 animal rescue group based in Salamanca, NY. Our mission is to rescue and provide medical care to unwanted, neglected and abused animals and ultimately find them the loving homes they deserve. All donations are tax deductible. We are a small group of volunteers who try to be the voice for those that can’t speak for themselves. You may have seen us at Ellicottville’s Rockin’ Oldies Weekend or set up in front of Five Star Bank during Oktoberfest in Ellicottvile. We will be at Katy’s Cafe at 10 Washington St. this Saturday March 9th collecting supplies and monetary donations. Katy’s Cafe is a pet friendly business so please stop down and see us. If you aren’t able to stop in on Saturday you can drop off donations any time and they will get them to us. We will also be selling our famous gourmet dog biscuits to help support the animals that we have rescued from the terrible conditions they were in. We love to bring our wonderful animals to these events in an effort to find them their forever homes so hopefully we will have a couple of our adoptable rescue pets with us. Thank you to all of the adopters

out there who have changed the world for their furry family members by welcoming them into your hearts and homes. At this time we ask that you consider adding another to your family. How else might you be able to help? We have set up an account at Central Beer and Redemption Center located on Central Avenue in Salamanca. Anyone wishing to support EARS can just drop off their cans or bottles and ask them to donate them to EARS. We will be running this can and bottle drive through the end of March. Locally you may also drop off supplies and donations at City Hall in Salamanca at the City Clerk’s Office. Besides supplies we are in great need of gas gift cards and gift cards to places like Wal-Mart, Tractor Supply Company, PetCo and Pet Smart for supplies for these homeless babies. You can mail those gift cards or also easily mail us a check to: EARS, 2 Fancher Ave. Salamanca, NY 14779. We can also accept monetary donations via Paypal at [email protected]. Keep in mind that all donations are tax deductible and a receipt will be mailed to you for your records. If you would like additional information regarding our rescue group please feel free to email us at [email protected] or call us at (716) 378-3576. You may also view our adoptable pets on our website at www.empire.petfinder.com. We would like to send a special thank you out to our wonderful veterinarians Dr. Tim O’Leary, Dr. Martin Inkley and Dr. John Inkley who have helped us care for these animals. We would also like to thank those who have already heard the news and have supported us with donations to take care of these deserving souls. Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook as well. a tractor, an excavator, and something called a skid steer. He uses Mobile Delvac oil in all of them, and finds it a worthy product. Most importantly he is religious about servicing his equipment. The heavy stuff is serviced every 100 hours of use, and the trucks are maintained every five thousand miles. “That’s key,” he says, “big time.” On Thursday he will leave for Charlotte North Carolina to attend the Concrete Décor show sponsored by the magazine. But it’s not all fun and games; this year several of the contractors – Tom among them – pour a 72x30’ patio for a youth center. The magazine organizes the

effort, and the contractors willing give up their time. The convention is a chance for him to get some more continuing education; something he considers vital to his business. As a result of his devotion to it Tom has been able to increase his business and expand into areas that were almost unknown to him a few years ago. The new lodge at Holiday Valley has two bars of poured, stained concrete that were installed by Tom. If you have been into Tim and Bonnie’s Pizza, you’ve seen another example of one of his stained decorative floors. He currently is working on pouring a bar for Arthur’s Grill and Bistro in Hamburg. While getting coverage in a national magazine doesn’t confer celebrity status, Tom’s knowledge and skill in the craft make him something of a standout. It’s safe to say that Tom is probably the more experienced contractor in decorative concrete in the country. Something he takes seriously in dealing with his gravel and cement suppliers, and ready mix producers. “It all comes down to me, I’m the one who’s getting paid to pay them.” For Tom not only is one of his decorative concrete installations serious business, it’s a work of art.

Day Trippin’2013 Buffalo Home and Garden Show this Weekend & Next; National Celebrity Home Improvement and Landscape Expert Is Special Guest

BUFFALO, N.Y. – March 4, 2013 – The 2013 Buffalo Home and Garden Show – Two Weekends Only – is back and better than ever at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center on March 8-10 and March 15-17. Visitors will get a chance to visit hundreds of exhibitors, hear from celebrity guests, participate in interactive seminars and enter their pets in a fur-tastic pet fashion show. “Every year we challenge ourselves to put on a show that will inspire, inform and impress our visitors,” said Ellen Carroll, Buffalo Home & Garden Show manager. “This year, we are hoping to motivate homeowners to create the getaway they deserve, whether it’s a lush backyard retreat or a special man cave just for dad.” The Buffalo Home & Garden Show welcomes celebrity guest and host of DIY Network’s “Man Caves” and “Desperate Landscapes,” Jason Cameron. Cameron is a celebrity home improvement and landscape expert who has helped hundreds of families update their homes--indoors and outdoors. He will give presentations on turning a gloomy basement into an impressive man cave and share landscaping tips that will leave your neighbors green with

envy. Presentations will take place on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10 at 1 and 4 p.m. each day. Cristin Frank, Buffalo’s own do-it-yourself guru, will also be joining the lineup for 2013. Frank worked 13 years in design and management for major consumer products before returning to her hometown and starting a lifestyle movement involving upcycling and simple living. As an upcycling artist, Frank will share her creative reuses for old and obsolete furniture in presentations every Saturday and Sunday of the Home Show. After each presentation, Frank will be available to sign her DIY lifestyle book “Living Simple, Free & Happy: How to Simplify, Declutter Your Home, and Reduce Stress, Debt & Waste.” Visitors will also hear from a second local expert, Sally Cunningham, a popular garden teacher and consultant. Western New Yorkers know Cunningham from her weekly appearance on WIVB-TV (Channel 4) along with a weekly column in the Buffalo News. And no garden question seems too daunting for Cunningham. Visitors are invited to a “Garden Q&A”

every Sunday of the Home Show at 11 a.m. The talented teams from the Interior Design Association (IDA) of WNY are back and will attempt to think inside the box in the new “White Room Challenge.” Each designer will be tasked with creatively designing and decorating a 12 x 12 room using a single poster as inspiration. The designers must also incorporate four mandatory elements: muslin; a Parsons sofa table; a wooden cube; and a mirror. After all the finishing touches, visitors will be able to walk through each room and then vote for their favorite design. The winner gets bragging rights and a random voter will receive a two-hour consultation with the designer they voted for. The “White Room Challenge” will show how a little imagination and a whole lot of talent can stem from a single poster. The M P Caroll Hardwood floor giveaway returns for the fifth year but with a new twist. The winner can choose one of seven flooring options used in the “White Room Challenge.” The lucky visitor receives 150 square feet of brand-new flooring including installation, a prize valued at $3,000. Entry forms are available at the M P Caroll exhibit space and online at www.wivb.com. In addition to veteran vendors like M P Caroll, Alden Pools and Rainbow Play, Frank’s Basement Systems and The Kaz Companies, the Buffalo Home and Garden Show is pleased to welcome nearly 60 new exhibitors this year, including: Ace Flag Company • KegWorks • Love Your Dog • Perfect Lawn…..and many more! Also new this year is the Flower and Garden Market in the main lobby. Visitors will be able to purchase a wide variety of items including fresh cut flowers and garden-themed

products. And after browsing new items in the main lobby, visitors can also take their old items for a free appraisal by Best Antiques. A free value assessment of old home items such as coins, jewelry, art and antiques will be available (one per guest) by appraising experts from throughout Western New York. Appraisers will be at the Show Friday between 12-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and Saturday and Sundays between 1-4 p.m. Salamanca Mall Antiques, one of the largest antique malls in the country, will also be available to answer specific antiquing questions. Exhibiting companies include kitchen and bath, home décor, cabinetry, windows and doors, heating and air conditioning, home electronics, home builders and remodelers, pools, spas, landscaping and many more. Back again this year to emcee the popular Pet Fashion Show is Buffalo-native Jarod Miller, zoologist and television host. The Pet Fashion Show will take place on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. and is sponsored by 97 Rock. To enter your pet,

visit www.97rock.com. For those looking for new and innovative ways to use their new kitchens at the show, there will be opportunities on both weekends to get some great tips. The innovative chefs from Niagara County Community College’s Culinary Arts Department will show visitors how to create vibrant, spring - themed entrées, appetizers and desserts on March 9 and 10, at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. During the second weekend, March 15-17, Chef Randy, the Barefoot Ambassador, will share some of his favorite recipes using red wine as a key ingredient. As the Barefoot Wine Ambassador, Randy travels across the country sharing his passion for making wine a fun part of cooking. Also back by popular demand at the Buffalo Home & Garden Show this year is National Fuel’s natural gas fire pit giveaway. The fire pit combines the warmth of a campfire with the convenience of clean-burning natural gas. Plus, it’s environmentally friendly with little clean up required. The fire pit, valued

at $2,600, is on display in the F&S Garden feature courtesy of Arthurs Fine Furnishings in Orchard Park. You can register to win by visiting www.wben.com. But the home improvement fun doesn’t stop when you leave the Convention Center. Stockmohr Company is bringing the Mastic Home Exteriors mobile showroom trailer to town for guests to enjoy on their way in or out of the Home Show. Guests can expect to find siding styles, textures and colors, along with windows, shutters and designer accents in the temperature-controlled trailer on March 9th and 10th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information about the Buffalo Home & Garden Show or to see a full list of seminar presenters, visit www.buffalohomeshow.com. Discount tickets are available online, save $3 off the admission price. Admission price at the door is $10 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. Discount tickets are also available at participating Tops Friendly Market locations.
