It is truly astonishing to think that we at Village Family Dental are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. What started out as one office, has now grown into a practice that includes ten locations spanning three counties and over 200 employees. It all began with a vision and the desire to bring dental health to people of all ages. With your support, Village Family Dental has become the growing, family-oriented practice that it is today. Here is a brief history of Village Family Dental: Our practice began in 1985 as a small office founded by Dr. Michael Knowles in the town of St. Pauls, North Carolina. Through our efforts to improve dental services to our rural community, we invested in a new and better way to deliver dental care — “the Family Dental Group Practice.” Instead of referring patients out to different specialists at distant locations, with the potential for poor patient follow-up, we began to center all care within our own practice. We contracted with top specialists to treat our patients in our own offices. Dr. Terrance Smith, Prosthodontist, joined the practice as a partner in 1992 and our legal name was changed to Knowles, Smith and Associates, PA. However, we do business as Village Family Dental. As we continued to grow, we opened our second office in Hope Mills in 1993 and by 1997, we began preparations to open our third office in Fayetteville. It was completed in 1999. Dr. Faith McGibbon, Pediatric Dentist, joined us in May of 1999 and became a partner in 2002. Rounding out the Partnership Group are Dr. Brad Ryan, Dr. Grant Wiles, Dr. Mit Patel and Dr. Anuj James, who serves as the Managing Partner. Southeastern Dental Specialists, Dental Health Associates, All-American Family Dental and Cape Center Family Dental have all been added to the VFD family since 2002. As we take this opportunity to reflect upon the past thirty years, there is one constant that has remained the key ingredient to our success: the love, support and loyalty of our incredible patients. Village Family Dental was created so that all age groups could receive care and you have been gracious enough to entrust us with the dental health of your families for all these years. We’re truly humbled by your trust and are proud to say that we have patients who have been with us from the very beginning of the practice. From the dedication of our military families, to the smiling faces of our precious pediatric patients, we would not be able to bring our unique brand of care to so many people without your help. So on this, our thirtieth year in business, we say “Thank You.” We look forward to doing our very best to ensure that the next thirty years are just as successful. There’s no doubt that if we have the support of such remarkable patients as yourself, we’ll continue to give you more reasons to smile! Dr. Brett Alvey is a native of Richmond, Utah. He received a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from Utah State University. He then moved to Chapel Hill and received a D.D.S. from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. While in dental school, he developed a love for orthodontics and completed a residency at the University of Washington in Seattle. It was there that he received a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Masters in Science in Dentistry. He is certified by the American Board of Orthodontics.

Dr. Alvey is also fluent in Spanish. He currently lives in the Durham area with his wife. They have two children: Aaron and Abigail. In his spare time Dr. Alvey enjoys playing and watching sports. He and his family are big UNC fans.

When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Dr. Alvey states:

“I love working with the kids and hearing about what they are doing in life. I love watching smiles transform and seeing kids gain confidence as a result. Orthodontics had a big impact on me growing up as it helped my self-confidence and I enjoy seeing kids experience that same feeling.”

Once again, the team members of Village Family Dental were asked to nominate one of their co-workers for the prestigious Employee of the Year Award, also known as the Mike Bordeaux Award. The final decision, determined by the practice partners, was kept a heavily guarded secret until the first staff meeting of the New Year. The recipient of this award is selected for their ability to go above and beyond the call of duty; to make those around them better and to approach every task, no matter how big or small, with a positive attitude.

The Village Family Dental Employee of the Year for 2014 is Registered Dental Hygienist, Emily Nichols Scott and she definitely exemplifies these qualities along with many more. Emily currently works as one of the awesome hygienists at our Cape Center Family Dental Office where she is beloved by patients and staff members alike. Her tireless work ethic and genuine care for her patients have helped her to stand out throughout her time with Village Family Dental. Emily recently decided to take her skills a step further and became a Certified CPR Instructor in 2014. This enabled her to become the CPR Instructor for the entire practice. She also participates heavily in marketing events for VFD and is always prepared with new ideas that will help get the Village Family Dental name out to the public.

A native of Ayden, North Carolina, Emily is a graduate of Ayden-Grifton High School. She received her degree in Dental Hygiene from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2010 and then moved to the Fayetteville area. She began her career with Village Family Dental around the same time, working as a dental hygienist at our Fayetteville location. She started working with the evening clinic in 2014 and also began working at Cape Center Family Dental that same year. See what we mean by tireless?

On July 25th, Emily married nursing student Benton Scott." The beautiful wedding took place in Selma, North Carolina and was attended by many of her closest family, friends and loved ones." In her spare time, she enjoys visiting Topsail Beach, crafting (she’s an admitted Pinterest addict) and spending time with her family and friends." When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Emily states:

“I enjoy interacting with my patients on a personal level. You should always put your heart into everything that you do. And I try my best to do that every day at work.”

We at Village Family Dental are truly grateful for all of the hard work and dedication that Emily has demonstrated throughout her time with the practice. She has truly helped to make VFD a better place and if she is any indication, the future of the practice is extremely bright. Way to go Emily!

At Village Family Dental we know that your time is extremely valuable. Life can be hectic and there just aren’t enough hours in the day. That’s why we do our very best to offer you dental care that is effective as well as convenient. We are happy to now offer our patients Same Day Crowns. With this innovative new treatment option, you can get the benefits of a crown without the long wait. Doctors at our Fayetteville and Eastover locations have received extensive training for Same Day Crowns and are excited to present this new option to patients who need it.

TECHTIME SAME-DAY CROWNS

Are same day crowns long-lasting?

Today’s same-day crowns are better fitting, more durable and less likely to fracture than previous same day restorations. They are also multi-colored and translucent, thus making them appear more like natural teeth.

What are the advantages of same day crowns?

With in-office dentistry, multiple appointments for the same treatment are no longer necessary, which saves time. Because in-office crowns are usually designed based on digital impressions obtained with optical scanning technology, traditional impression materials are not used. This eliminates the need for distasteful materials or uncomfortable bulky trays, and there’s less likelihood of gagging. Same Day Crowns also eliminate the need for temporary restorations, which reduces concerns about tooth sensitivities that could result when wearing temporaries, or about the temporaries falling out at inconvenient times.

Who can have same day crowns?

Not every tooth can be treated with a same-day type crown. Your dentist will determine if it is among the appropriate treatment options for your condition.

How are same day restorations made?

A digital impression is taken of the tooth preparation using an optical scanner and entered into a computerized system. Your dentist and their team use this system to make a virtual model of the tooth or teeth needing treatment and to design the crown. This involves identifying the appropriate color and shape. The design is sent to a milling machine that will manufacture the restoration in approximately 20 minutes. The mill uses burs to cut the block to the exact shape of the specific restoration. When milling is complete, the restoration will be polished, or stained, and glazed to create a life-like appearance that will match and blend with the natural teeth.

Interested in finding out more about Same-Day Crowns and want to know if you’re a candidate for treatment?Call our Fayetteville Office (910-485-8884) or our Eastover Office (910-437-0232) for more information!
