During the holidays, family gatherings and social events can bring added challenges. Remember these tips to help you enjoy merry moments this season. Plan ahead. As with most holiday activities, planning ahead to manage errands and anticipate problems can be the best preventive measure. Taking care of tasks ahead of time can make a get-together run more smoothly and give you a chance to ask for help. Prepare visitors. Let family members and friends who don’t see your loved one frequently know what to expect and how to make the most of their visit. Adapt celebrations. Celebrate with your loved one within his or her current capabilities. Keep it simple: Listen to memorable music, look at photos from past holidays or share a favorite seasonal treat. Don’t forget that the season is about joy and love—not perfection. Take a timeout. It’s imperative to make time for yourself to relax and recharge during the busy season. CIRCLE OF FRIENDS& NEIGHBORHOODNEWS

In the wake of our annualArtist Market, we wanted to takethis opportunity to reflect onwhat the real benefits are whenit comes to the relationshipbetween art therapy andmemory care. Sure, art projectscan pass the time (and in thiscase, raise money for a goodcause) but what is the realPURPOSE?

1) OUTLET FOR EXPRESSION:Art provides a therapeutic outletfor individuals to communicatetheir emotions non-verbally.When words fail, art prevails.According to Dr. Daniel C. Pottswho founded CognitiveDynamics, “Roadblocks to verbalcommunication laid by dementiaare bypassed through theartistic process, and individualscan express themselves throughthe art. Concentration andattention improves, andresidents are often easier to carefor even when the therapyis over.”

2) REDUCE ISOLATION:Cognitive impairment oftentimes can increase one’sinclination to isolate, whether itis due to self consciousness, ordecline in the ability to initiateactivities. By providing aplatform for engagement, artoffers an enticing opportunity toleave one’s room and socialize.

3) REDUCE STRESS &

ANXIETY: Throughout history, art therapy has proven againand again its miraculous abilityto reduce anxiety and promotehealing. By focusing on anenjoyable task at hand, thisoften serves as an outlet forpositivity, bringing one’sattention away from anynegative emotions.

THANKSGIVINGDINNER NOURISHESYOUR BRAIN

The staple foods of a traditionalThanksgiving dinner will not onlyfeed your holiday appetite, but theirnutrients can also nourish yourbrain. The meal’s centerpiece, turkey contains an amino acid usedto produce dopamine, a chemicalthat improves mental alertness andmemory. The bread crusts oftenused in stuffing are rich inantioxidants, and the side dishcranberries are also packed withthem. Research suggests thatantioxidants stave off brain agingand enhance cognitive function.

3 THINGS YOUNEED TO KNOW

Whether you shop at a farmers’market or grocery store, here are afew tips for buying fall produce:

1) Sweet potatoes. Smaller isbetter. Large sweet potatoes willhave less flavor and fewer nutrients.

2) Brussels sprouts. Look forsmall, firm sprouts with bright greenheads. Smaller heads will have asweeter taste. Sprouts sold on thestem are likely freshest.

3) Winter squash. Choose squashthat are heavy for their size and stillhave the stem attached. The skinshould have a matte finish, not shiny.
