A FAVORITE FALLFRUIT
One of the oldest knownfruits, the pomegranate, hasbeen cultivated for more than8,000 years. The bright red fruitis native to Iran and Turkey andhas been featured in themythology, art and literature ofmany cultures, often as a symbolof health and eternal life.
The name of the fruit derivesfrom the Middle French pomegarnete, which means “seededapple.”
The pomegranate is widelygrown in Korea and Japan, where it is often used for bonsaibecause of the plant’s colorfulflowers and the unusual twistedbark of older trees.
In some cultures, thepomegranate was used more fordecoration than for food. It alsowas a favorite subject of modern
artists, appearing in works byPaul Cézanne, Salvador Dalí,Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
Late autumn is harvest timefor pomegranates, which have atough outer layer but are filledwith crunchy, juicy seeds. Thejuice and the seeds, called arils, are the only edible parts.
Pomegranate seeds are highin vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, fiber and several minerals. Theyalso contain beneficialantioxidants and are believed toreduce joint inflammation, lowerblood pressure and improveblood flow.

SCHOOLED BY THEMCGUFFEY READERS
Before the days of computersand the internet, a simple seriesof schoolbooks called theMcGuffey Readers helpededucate generations of childrenand shape American society.
In the early 19th century, immigrants were arriving in thecountry, people were settling inthe West and public schoolswere being established. Aformer frontier teacher, WilliamHolmes McGuffey was aprofessor at an Ohio collegewhen he was asked to create aseries of primers for America’sgrowing classrooms. In 1836, hecompleted the first of sixreaders. The fifth and sixthreaders were written by his
brother Alexander in the 1840s.McGuffey’s texts taught
reading, spelling and vocabularyusing his own writings andexcerpts of literature, essaysand speeches by a variety ofauthors, including WilliamShakespeare, Washington Irvingand Thomas Jefferson. Virtuessuch as hard work, courage andhonesty were emphasized. Theillustrated books were designedto increase in difficulty asstudents progressed. Historianssay the readers helpedstandardize language in Americaand shape the nation’s moralvalues at the time.
Between 1836 and 1960, morethan 120 million copies of theMcGuffey Readers were sold.Other textbooks eventuallyreplaced the readers, butversions are still in print andused by teachers and schoolstoday.

With itssly and uproarious humor and aheart that embraces humanity’sfollies as well as its triumphs,Nobody’s Fool is storytelling at itsmost generous.
