Jeff’s Spot

Jeff Webb Area Representative & Chairman

Our first event of the 2012 season took place at the Detling showground on the 31st

March; The Heritage & Transport show was very well attended and we had 11 cars on

display.

We decided this year to hold the spring lunch at our club night venue The Dog & Bear

on 29th April, although a fairly extensive menu was offered and lunch would be served in

the function room, the take up to be honest was fairly poor with only 34 members book-

ing as against an average of 48 in previous years.

The next car events are the “Swale Classic Car Show” on the 6th May, followed by the

“East Kent Railway Classic car show” on the 20th May.

We have David Render booked to give us a talk on the Tanks of WW2 at the club night

on 21st May, And I have just had confirmation that Ken Wilson the Jaguar Drivers Club

Chairman will be coming down to talk to us on the 18th June, so if anyone has any ques-

tions about the workings of the main club do come along and ask him.

As you are all aware by now Brenda & I are stepping down from the committee in Janu-

ary and as yet we have not found anyone who is willing to take over the running of the

area. This means that unless someone comes forward, the area activities in 2013 will be

drastically curtailed with no events calendar, club nights or main events organised &

Kent Area 4 will become dormant: If you can help out with any part of the organisation

please contact one of the committee. We have talked about the possibility of holding a

special general meeting at the September club night to discuss the options for the area in

the future.

Finally, another reminder about the weekend away to Great Yarmouth on the weekend

of 5/8th October as we need to confirm our final numbers with the hotel soon. This is

terrific value at £90pp for 3nights half board so if you want to join us, please let me

know ASAP..

Ted Partridge has drawn my attention to the

Fair Fuel UK Campaign which exists to fight the gov-

There’s unfinished business from the 1952 Mille Miglia. Works-backed Jaguars are going back to

Italy in May to finish off what Sir Stirling Moss started 60 years ago with a virtuoso drive in a C-

type that offered a tantalising glimpse of victory in the famous road race.

This time around the cars are worth millions of pounds, but once again the C- and D-types are

going racing with works backing as part of a major brand-boosting heritage initiative by Jaguar.

The 1952 Mille Miglia was a classic against-the-odds Jaguar escapade in true Boys’ Own tradi-

tion. Stirling, with Jaguar chief development driver Norman Dewis, was in Italy testing the first

prototype disc-braked Jaguar C-type, when a decision was made almost casually to enter the Mille.

As Sir Stirling recalls: “We didn’t think too much about racing in the Mille, we just wanted to

check the brakes.”

The pair had put in no practice or reconnaissance yet, amazingly, were lying third with a whiff of

victory when disaster struck 123 miles from the finish of the 1,000-mile race. Rounding a corner to

find a stream of water cascading from the hillside across the otherwise dry road, they skidded and

hit a rock. The impact broke the steering rack and put the plucky pair out of the race.

That was then. Now, the launch of Jaguar Heritage Racing, whose programme starts at the Mille

Miglia recreation (May 16-20), means enthusiasts will once more get to see history-making cars

campaigned with works support in historic competition action at high-profile events all over the

world.

Sir Stirling, now 82, was guest of honour at the launch of Jaguar Heritage Racing at the RAC Club

on London’s Pall Mall on March 12. It was a date that was chosen carefully, for it marked 60 years

to the day that Leslie Johnson put down an amazing production car marker at the banked circuit at

Montlhéry, Paris, by covering 131.83 miles in one hour in a Jaguar XK120. Later that year, back at

the French autodrome, Stirling was part of the team that drove an XK120 for seven days and seven

nights to cover 16,581.73 miles at an average speed of 100.31mph.

And, of course, the five Fifties Le Mans victories in C- and D-types are the stuff of Jaguar lore.

It’s exactly this kind of legacy that Jaguar wants to tap into. At the launch, Frank Klaas, Jaguar

Land Rover’s head of global communications, said: “We recognised that we weren’t doing enough

to tell our story. Other companies are purely technology driven. We have that technology too, but

we’re also driven by a unique history and emotion.”

Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design director, added: “There was a time when Jaguar was embarrassed by

its legacy and heritage because the cars we were producing weren’t far enough removed from the

past.” In design terms, the company was leaning too much on its past, rehashing and extending old

styling cues long past their shelf life, but now, under Callum, Jaguar is in the midst of the most

extensive new product development cycle in its history.

Jaguar Heritage Racing will be in action at the Nürburgring Oldtimer Grand Prix in August and at

the Telegraph-sponsored Goodwood Revival the following month. It is being operated by premier

classic Jaguar specialist JD Classics, campaigning Jaguar’s C- and D-types, as well as production

models including XK120s. The Essex-based company, run by Derek Hood, already looks after

Jaguar’s historic Group C endurance racers.

The new impetus is a clear signal that in the Jaguar of today, heritage is a key part of the brand

message. That augurs well for Jaguar Heritage and its collection of 150 cars, which is looking for a

new home after its imminent departure from the old factory site at Browns Lane, which has been

sold. Ken McConomy, Jaguar global PR director, said: “We have a plan. I can’t reveal what it is

yet, but it is ambitious and very exciting. The collection will not be moving far from its spiritual

home at Coventry.”

What a delightful lunch we had thanks to Anne’s usual

excellent hospitality.

It was great to see Jack and Marjory with us after such a

long time and also some new members.

Alan Mobbs once again managed to squeeze lots of prizes

out of JDC and various firms he’s in touch with.

Thanks to all those concerned in organising such an enjoy-

able event.
