Nene Park Academy looks

forward to its state of the art

new buildings.

S tudents and staff at Nene Park Academy on Oundle Road are looking forward to having their

school rebuilt over the next eighteen months. Contractors started on site in February and will hand over phase 1 of the project for September 2012, with completion of the £14.25 million project for September 2013.

Since opening in September, Nene Park Academy has seen a rapid improvement in standards and achievements supported through its partnership with Swavesey Village College as well as the local community partnerships that it has developed especially with the Nene Park Trust and PUFC.

The philosophy of the academy is simple: every student is known and supported as an individual to achieve the very best they can, both academically and personally. The House system that underpins this com-mitment reflects the structure at the Acad-emy’s partner school in Cambridgeshire.

Mark Woods, Principal at Nene Park Academy and formerly Vice Principal at Swavesey, is delighted with the progress of the new build. ‘It has been really exciting to design the new school to reflect and

support the House system that we developed at Swavesey and have now introduced at NPA. ’

‘Our motto is ‘High quality education at the heart of the community’ and the new school buildings will provide students and the wider community with state of the art facilities: a school – a community and buildings – to be proud of.’

Plans for the new building can be seen on the Academy’s website (www.neneparkacademy.org) but Mr Woods is keen to emphasise ‘We welcome people to come and look around the school now because great schools are not about buildings but about the positive relationships that you will see between students and staff that create excellence opportunities for students and lead to great results.’

Welcome to the

March edition of

‘The Viewer’

We saw the first flurry of snow in

February, and wasn’t it pretty!!! Thank-

fully though, it didn’t last too long.

Hopefully it didn’t cause you too much

trouble.

Well, March is here and Mother’s

Day (18th March) is just a few weeks

away. Why not take your mum to one

of the restaurants featured in the

magazine or buy her a voucher for a

pampering day at one of our hair and

beauty salons. You may want to

present her with a beautiful bouquet or

special gift from ‘Olivia Flowers & Gifts’ -

see page 14. There are more ideas in

the magazine, please have a look

through.

Spring is not far away now, meaning

longer evenings and sunshine coming

our way very soon. However, while

we’re waiting, why not wrap up warm

and visit one of the activity farms - i.e.

‘Pigeon Farm’ (see page 11) for a fun

day out. There are lots more activities

and events on page 52 & 53 - either

warm indoors or wrapped up outdoors.

Something for everyone!

Finally, we are looking for a local reliable person to distribute ‘The Viewer’ in Orton Longueville. If you would like to earn a little extra money helping with the distribution, please give me a call or email. I would ask that you can commit to a minimum of 4/5 hours every other month and ideally live in the area.

Have a great month!

Leaving your car in Showroom Condition

The Professional Mobile Car Valeting

I recently challenged Tommy Liddar from Mister Car-Shine to make my Car Shine. I didn’t think it was possible, as it

was in a terrible state, it hadn’t been cleaned for a little while.

Tommy took the challenge and came along to my home and started the clean-up. The full valet took approx. 3 hours and included a waterless hand-wash, wax and polish. All carpets, mats and seats were vacuumed and deep cleaned including the boot. Door shunts, windows, trims, dashboards, bumpers, mirrors and door panels were cleaned and polished and all wheels & tyres cleaned & dressed. Finally, the interior was deodorised with a special deodorising machine killing 99% of germs and bacteria such as e-coli, MRSA, etc., eliminating all smells like tobacco, damp,

mould and even pet smells, leaving the whole car smelling fresh & spotless, inside and out, looking in Showroom Condition.

Tommy is very conscience of being environmentally friendly. He uses a water-less car wash and also the polish used is water repellent and gives a long lasting deep gloss shine meaning less washes and saving you money at the same time.

Full Valet for only £29.95 - takes approx. 3 / 4 hours Mini Valet for only £14.95 - takes approx. 1.5 / 2 hours

The cost for this immaculate clean is very reasonable considering the time and effort involved.

The last time my car looked and smelt as clean and shiny, was 3 years ago when I picked it up from the garage from new!

T he Village Hall at Orton Waterville was built after the war to celebrate victory and peace and to remember those who

fell. For the official opening in 1950 a garden fete was organised and prizes donated by local farmers. These included a pig, some live chickens and a dozen fresh eggs! Fast forward 62 years and there is still an annual village show but the use of the Hall by the community has changed dramatically.

Nowadays the emphasis is on health and well being, learning new skills, entertainment and socialising.

Unfortunately the Hall is in

danger of falling victim to the

ravages of time and its own

popularity in part due to the

huge increase in the local

population from about 400 when

it was built to the 20,000 who live

in the Ortons today. Although a

charitable organisation with no

outside financial support, the

volunteer trustees have taken

the very bold decision to raise

£300,000 for the “Jubilee Project”.

This will involve upgrading the fabric of the building and all its facilities, new “low carbon” heating, and the construction of a new meeting room to cater for a growing demand including voluntary support groups.

Fundraising in the present

economic climate is a real

challenge but so far £57,000

has been raised towards the

£120,000 cost of phase 1.

Funds have come from

Village Hall reserves, the City

Council, the Parish Council ,

and generous donations by

users. The trustees are very

busy raising money from

large funders and donors

and wish now to thank all

those who have helped so

far.

Monthly Tips for your Pet Quick Guide for

New Puppy & Kitten Owners

W hilst bringing a new puppy or kitten home is a wonderfully exciting time for

new pet owners, we also know that it can be quite daunting. So here is a quick guide to some of the basics, however please feel free to pop in and speak to us at any time.

Play & Discipline

The best toys are interactive, stimulating and appropriately sized (no small parts that can be swallowed and scratching posts should allow a full grown cat to scratch at a complete stretch).

Disciplining may be necessary if behaviour threatens people or property, but harsh punishment should be avoided. Remote punishment is preferred because the pet associates punishment with the undesirable act, not with you and consists of using something that appears unconnected to the punisher. Use spray bottles, throw objects in the direction of the pet to startle (but not hit) it, or make loud noises.

Food

Diet is extremely important in the growing months of a pets life and beyond. Dry food is definitely less expensive than wet, especially given that wet contains around 75% water, compared to only 10% in dried food. Wet food is often more tasty to pets, however will not be as good for maintaining a healthy mouth and teeth and is unlikely to be more nutritious than a good quality dry food - which will also have less undigested particles and so less physical waste (faeces).

Vaccinations

Puppies and kittens should both ideally have a full course of vaccinations between 6-12 weeks, which is two injections several weeks apart. After this they will require a booster every 12 months for the rest of their life to keep their immunity up.

Fleas & Worms

Ideally you should treat your pet with a preventative flea treatment every month throughout the year. The choices available

are vast, many are not suitable for use on puppies, different types vary in cover (just killing fleas, stopping their lifecycle etc…) as well as their protection against other parasites. We would be happy to advise you on this to ensure you make an appropriate choice for the size and lifestyle of your pet.

Worming should be done more frequently during the first few months and at a weight appropriate dose for their growing size. Below is a standard guide, however house cats and hunting pets may need a different approach for their adult lifestyle. Puppies: every two weeks from 2-12 weeks old, then every three months. Kittens: every two weeks from 6-12 weeks old, then every three months.

Microchipping

Microchips are the best way of identifying and contacting the rightful owner of a pet should it get lost or be stolen. The microchips we use are the size of a grain of rice and are not made from glass, making them shatter-proof so they will last a lifetime. They are inserted in the scruff of the neck by injection and no anaesthetic is required.

Neutering

Once your puppy is 6 months old, you should consider getting him or her neutered for preventative health care reasons as detailed below. Both operations are done under general anaesthetic and require a days stay at the vets, however they are normally allowed home that evening and are fully recovered from the operation within about two weeks.

Book Review

British Wildlife Photographer Award Collection 2 (Photography) AA Publishing Who says coffee table books always have to be about antique teapots and small furniture? Bring the outside world in and celebrate the best that this island has to offer. The British Wildlife Photography Awards began in 2009 and this beautiful collection is full of the winning pictures from 2011, ranging from urban intruders to marine life. Vivid images beautifully capture British wildlife in a wonderfully voyeuristic way. The whole collection is a window on the extraordinary lives of animals and is definitely one to be treasured.

RSPB Pocket Nature Wildlife of Britain If you’ve ever been out with your children and found yourself stumped by the question ‘what’s that?’ then this

guide is a must-have for you. With over a thousand species of British animals, plants and fungi, you’ll sound like Chris Packham on Springwatch if you carry this in your rucksack.

Bugs Britannica Peter Marren and Richard Mabey Determined to help the smallest

creatures on our island make the biggest impact, ‘Bugs Britannica’ is a must-have for creepy-crawly

enthusiasts. It’s wonderfully colourful and informative & guarantees to give you a greater understanding of how insects and humans interact and

the importance of our tiny house-invaders. Our gardens and homes are teeming with bug-life and you might find you’re no longer reaching for

the fly-spray this summer.

British Wildlife Detectives’ Handbook Camilla de la Bedovere.

This is the ideal companion for budding young naturalists, but most importantly of all…it comes with stickers. This handbook is packed with facts and information on everything you’re likely to see, both in the back-garden and beyond. Children will love turning detective and finding out what species they’re looking at. You can inspire and encourage them to really explore their natural surroundings without there being a computer in sight. The handbook has tick-boxes for keeping tabs on everything they’ve spotted so they can look back over their casework and truly admire British wildlife. an otherwise harsh and hopeless life.

Collins Complete Guides - British Coastal Wildlife

If you are opting for a ‘staycation’ and holidaying in Britain, reserve this book at the same time as booking your holiday. Our coastlines are quite literally swimming in extraordinary wildlife. This guide covers over 400 species of animals and plants found along our shores and will make a great companion for when you ‘like to be beside the seaside’. Leafing through this book is like sticking your head straight into a rock-pool. It has clear pictures, descriptions and is packed with information to appeal to even the truest of nature enthusiasts.

property, positively bursting at the seams with bits and bobs, nick-nacks and bric-a-brac (nobody really knows what bric-a-brac is, but it seems appropriate here. In fact, whilst I'm on the subject, what actually are nick-nacks?). Two days before we were due to move out of the house, it burned down. For legal reasons it's probably best if I don't go into the exact details of the incident; suffice to say that it wasn't our fault and we lost everything.

In the immediate aftermath of the event, I learned that I am much happier when I own virtually nothing.

I only missed one thing, in truth. My piano. Moving into the new place was a dream - I literally walked through the front door and was done - but I didn't quite feel at ease again until I'd furnished it with a piano. It wasn't so much the physical presence of the instrument that I craved, but more the ability to fill the house with music. This may seem unbearably pretentious and like a tremen-dously deep and cerebral person. I'm not either, of course, but this was of little concern to me at the time. I would go to parties and tell girls the story of the fire in the hope that hinting at an untapped river of pain running through my soul (I think that's how I phrased it) would make them much more likely to get off with me. And so it was that, gradually, I began to understand that the fire had in one sense been a blessing. It had purged me of the scrapyard of pointless junk I had unwittingly collected over the years, and now I was free to be my own person again. I was lord of my gloriously empty manor.

You can imagine my consternation, then, when in preparation for a recent house move I found myself packing up my bedroom once more and discovering that,

just a few short years later, I somehow still owned TRUCKLOADS OF STUFF. I mean, ruddy truckloads.

This discovery propelled me towards an unashamedly fascist cull of my belongings. One of the items that failed to make the cut during the move was a five-foot tall pink wicker giraffe I had received as a gift some years earlier. I was rather fond of this curious ornament, as it happens, but when you're executing a cull of this magnitude you have to be cold and ruthless, and there really was no room for giraffes. In the end I took it to my local charity shop, spent a short while reflecting on what sort of person would want to buy such a thing, and promptly left.

Two hours later, as I turned the front-door key one final time and officially vacated my home, I saw a woman walking up the road with, you guessed it, a pink wicker giraffe under her arm.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, said Einstein, only moved around. The law of thermodynamics. True not just of tiny electrons, it seems, but apparently also of giraffes.

LAWN CARE IN MARCH

Moss - Free Treatment (see offer)

Moss has been a real threat to lawns this year, and may be affecting your lawn. Apply a specific moss treatment now, or get

ProLawnCare to spray with their special Moss Control Treatment. Moss dies in front of your eyes. It is best to do it now before the spring starts.

Fertiliser This is the time to feed and weed (preferably in that order). The fertiliser is predominately Nitrogen in a slow release form, but it may also need Phosphate and Potassium as well as vital trace elements.

Weed Control Once the weeds and grass are actively growing a selective herbicide to kill broad leaved weeds such as

dandelions, daisies and clover within the grass can be applied.

Actions required in Early Spring

• Mow lawn lightly when dry enough. • Treat Moss • Apply Spring Feed • Spray weeds in lawn with Selective Herbicide

Some of the above tasks can be carried out by the lawn owner, other tasks may need some professional intervention.

RECIPE

Serves 4 Ready in 40 minutes plus 30

minutes marinating

This is a great way to jazz up salmon – with a Japanese

teriyaki sauce glaze served with sesame flavoured

noodles. Soak the wooden skewers in water for 30

minutes before threading on the strips of salmon to

prevent them from burning under the hot grill.

Slice each salmon fillet widthways into 2 strips and place the strips in a shallow dish. Mix together the teriyaki sauce and garlic and pour over the salmon. Cover and leave to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the strips of salmon onto 8 wooden skewers. Grill the salmon skewers for 3-4 minutes on each side until just cooked through.

Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Heat the sesame oil in a wok or large non-stick frying pan and add the ginger, spring onions, radishes and sesame seeds. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes then add the noodles and toss well to mix.

Just before serving, brush the salmon skewers with the warmed honey and grill for a further few minutes. Divide the sesame noodles between four serving bowls and top with the salmon skewers.

TOP TIP - To save time buy a small jar of ready prepared ginger puree rather than buying fresh root ginger – once opened it will keep in the fridge for a few weeks and is great for adding an Oriental flavour to rice and stir fries.

250g packet medium egg noodles

A s a pleasant change from our usual mid week routine, my husband, daughter and I were delighted to

accept the invitation to review the historic Northamptonshire Inn and Restaurant - The Queens Head Riverside Inn, winners of the AA Rosette in 2010 for culinary excellence.

We made our way to the picturesque village of Nassington nr. Wansford for our evening meal in the snow. The Queens Head is found on the main street in this beautiful village situated on the banks of the River Nene.

We were greeted warmly by the staff in the entrance, which had an open and spaced feeling with mirrors and glass cabinets showing off the exquisite range of jewellery they have on offer.

We were then shown through to the bar area and were given the menus to study at our leisure, our order was taken and we were guided to our table in the dining area. The room had beamed ceilings, stone walls with traditional wooden tables, all creating a cosy and relaxing ambiance.

We were also given the wine list, which

contains an extensive selection of wines, with very helpful descriptions. After a while deliberating, we finally made a choice of a red light and fruity wine - La Fete Rouge - France 2008. Which we thoroughly enjoyed and was exactly what it said on the label - ‘light and fruity’.

The a la carte menu offers a select choice of dishes using the freshest of local and seasonal produce.

Starters included Whiskey and hichory smoked salmon, caper berries, pickled

cucumber with granary toast (£7.50) and warm oriental crispy duck salad with noodles, chilli, garlic and coriander dressing (5.95) to name a few.

Main courses ranged from Peppered Venison haunch with potato dauphinoise, savoy & bacon bundles (£12.95) to a Wagyu Sirloin Steak - the Japanese cattle breed that produces arguably the world’s best beef (£32.50). By featuring this high quality beef on the menu, and at affordable prices compared to London, The Queens Head Inn is bringing something different to the regions restaurants.

For the starter, I chose the Duck and pork terrine with pistachios, cranberry and orange compote, whilst my husband chose Vintage Lincolnshire poacher and whole-grain mustard soufflé, chicory Waldorf salad and my daughter went for the Leek and potato soup with garlic and thyme, confit wild mushrooms and sourdough croutes. These were all swiftly served, beautifully presented and tasted delicious. The terrine was perfectly textured, the soup, I was informed, was full of flavour with a spicy kick & the Lincolnshire Souffle was the best my husband had ever tasted.

Restaurant Review

The Queens Head Riverside Inn, Nassington.

Page 41: The Viewer Peterborough March 2012

Taking into account, The Queens Head Inn’s reputation of excellent steaks, we had to try one of the many choices for the main course. I decided on the Black Angus Rib Eye - from the US, Michael chose the Wagyu Sirloin Steak and Lisa chose The Queens Head Burger with melted cheese and crisp bacon.

The steaks, both char-grilled on the outside and the most succulent, juicy and flavoursome on the inside. These definitely stood up to their reputation. The Burger with the combination of the melted cheese and crispy bacon, again was juicy and flavoursome. We all had the 3 times cooked hand-cut chips as a side dish; they were fluffy and light and the most delicious chips you could ever taste!

We amazingly found space to squeeze in a desert. We picked the Sticky Toffee Pudding, butterscotch sauce with vanilla ice-cream and Warm Apple and Vanilla pie, toffee apples, calvados and white chocolate ice-cream. They all looked and tasted exceptional.

Then a hot, strong coffee and we were on our way. During the evening the snow had settled, making our drive home a little slippery on those pictureque country roads, but was all worth it!

To sum up the evening, we had the most delicious food with a cosy and warm ambiance. The courses were all served swiftly but at our own pace by the very polite and friendly staff. We enjoyed the whole experience and would definitely visit again.

In the summer months you could choose to dine al fresco on the patio or enjoy a snack and drinks on the grassy banks of the River Nene. The extensive bar menu is all at very reasonable prices.

The Queens Head is a 4 star Inn and is also recognised as one of the best hotels in East Anglia. It’s an ideal Wedding Venue and lots more.

T he much celebrated annual Dragon

Boat Festival returns to the Embankment

in Peterborough on Saturday 16th June

2012 and organisers, Gable Events, have

introduced a number of exciting changes

designed to make it easier for local

companies, clubs and groups of friends to

get a team together and be part of it!

These include smaller boats/team sizes, reduced entry fees and multiple crew discounts for those wishing to enter more than one team. The Festival will also be taking place on a Saturday for the first time.

To take part in this hugely popular event, all you need to do is raise a team of up to 11 people (squads can be larger) and you will be ready to ‘race the dragon’! All the dragon boats, qualified helms and racing equipment are provided, each team gets a minimum of three races and no previous experience is necessary, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm!

Now in its 14th spectacular year, around half the teams that enter the Festival each year are new. The beauty of dragon boat racing is that you don’t need the physical strength of a Steve Redgrave or the athletic prowess of a Jessica Ennis to be successful as it is teamwork and timing that win the day.

James Hallatt entered a team from Ecolutia Services based in Werrington for the first time last year and they very nearly won! He comments; “It was a superb day out for all

of our team, their families and supporters.

Most of our team had their children,

husbands, wives and girlfriends with them

and it was fun for everyone. We are looking

forward to improving on our third place

position in 2012!

All the teams that enter are encouraged to raise sponsorship for the Festival charity, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice, or the charity of their choice and there is a prize meal at The Grain Barge floating Peking restaurant for the team that raises the most! With awards also for second and third place, the ‘best dressed’ and the top mixed crew, there is a prize for every team to aim for!

The Festival is supported by Peterborough City Council, The Evening Telegraph and Heart 102.7 and offers a full day of fun on land as well as water with plenty of activities on the bankside to entertain teams and spectators between races.

To make sure your team is on the start line in

June, call Gable Events on 01780 470718 or visit

www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/peterborough.

Local Information ~ Local Information ~ Local Information

P ark Farm Pumas are a Youth Football

club founded in April 2010 by Ciaran

McAuley. Since its creation the club has seen dramatic growth in both numbers attending and popularity. This success has been achieved and is underpinned by our philosophy and vision that " ….we are a young football club formed to act as a vehicle for local children to take part in physical activity that provides them with an opportunity to learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, respect and discipline while at the same time taking part in fun, playful sporting activities with their friends in a safe & controlled environment." This philosophy coupled with the excellent FA qualified standard of our coaches has been the backbone of our success so far.

In our year and a bit existence we have created, nurtured and coached 5 new Mini soccer teams and a football Academy catering for over 60 young footballers from all over the city of Peterborough with ages ranging from 5-9 years. We have sought and been successful in agreeing significant long term deals with generous local businesses such as Marshall Honda, Costa Coffee and Travelex. We have also received funding from the FA, Government and local Councils through the Community Leadership funds and through the National "Grow the Game Grant" administered by the Football Foundation. As a club we have also recently attained the prestigious FA Charter Standard Accreditation which marks a significant milestone for the club re-affirming that our vision aligns with the FA's views on the Best practice for running football clubs at this level. But it’s not just all about the football.

We have also held numerous social events to build community support for the club and raise our profile including a free BBQ & fun day event, with free FA qualified coaching sessions, we also ran a couple of great Christmas party's and our annual club

presentation evening - all this and you get training and match days as well!! But we want to grow even further!! We want to be the biggest and best run youth football club in the area providing our brand of football coaching combined with helping our young people grow into the young adults we all hope our kids will become. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO DO THIS - CAN YOU HELP US ???

You can help by spreading the word about our club. We are encouraging applications for players aged 6, 7, 8 and 9 to come join our club and avail of our FA qualified coaches. We train at Stanground college & Power league during the Winter months on Tuesdays from 6pm - 7pm and in the Summer we train Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm - 7pm at our home ground at Fletton Avenue. If you are interested or if you know someone that might be interested in playing, coaching or becoming an administrator at the club then please have a look at our website - Google - "Park Farm Pumas". There is loads to see on there and lots more to learn about us, including our fun and games section for the players and parents alike - please feel free to have a go!! Alternatively please contact our Chairman Ciaran McAuley on 07713106898 for further information on what we are all about. We look forward to hearing from you.
