The VICTORY Project A Math & Reading Remediation Program THE NEED • 1 in 6 children who are not reading proficiently in 3rd grade do not graduate from high school on time. 1 • Palomar College* • 84% of students place at least one level below college level in in Math, English or Reading. • San Marcos Elementary School** • 60% of 3rd grade students are basic or below basic in English Language Arts. • 49% of 3rd grade students are basic or below basic in Math. • Alvin Dunn Elementary School** • 72% of 3rd grade students are basic or below basic in English Language Arts. • 62% of 3rd grade students are basic or below basic in Math. • In 2013, only 53% of 3rd graders in San Diego County scored proficient or advanced on the English Language Arts California Standardized Test. 2 • Among 34 countries surveyed, the United States ranked 14 th in reading and 25 th in math. 3 1 – The Annie E. THE GOAL • Provide a world-class Club Experience that assures academic success is within reach of every young person who needs support to graduate from high school on time ready for college, trade school, military or fulltime employment. • By 2017, 200 youth members will have graduated from The Victory Project program. THE VICTORY PROJECT The Victory Project (TVP) is an after school program of the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos. TVP program provides math and reading remediation to youth members in 1st - 5th grade, whose standardized test scores are below or far below basic as identified by the school site administration. Youth members participate in math and reading instruction for 2 hours a day, twice a week. A trained professional staff member provides guided instruction via a specialized curriculum that allows each youth member to follow a lesson in their personal workbook. The curriculum, Targeted Math and Reading Intervention, is research-based, approved by administrators of the San Marcos Unified School District and is correlated to the Common Core Standards. For added value at least once a week, youth members have the unique opportunity to play games on an iPad or tablet that corresponds directly to the curriculum. This allows youth members, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, the chance to access technology. The research is clear: as little as one hour of focused academic instruction after school can significantly increase scores in math and reading. The Results of Youth Participants • 66% improved their diagnostic test scores in reading*** • 78% improved their diagnostic test scores in math*** • Increased ability to compose a paragraph • Increased confidence in the classroom • Increased confidence to offer academic support to peers CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES The program costs $350 per youth member per year.
