On behalf of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Club of Greater Flint, it is my pleasure to congratulate you on your graduation and welcome you to membership in the Alumni Association. While you have spent the past several years closely linked to the University of Michigan-Flint campus, your Michigan community just got a lot bigger as you are joining one of the largest alumni bodies in the world!

During your time on campus, UM-Flint has enjoyed remarkable expansion. PHILIP R. HAGERMAN

In 1950, a group of leaders set forth a vision of establishing a first-class college to serve the rising city of Flint, the region, and the people of Michigan.

Since then, the university has educated more than 45,000 students who have succeeded in business and health professions, who went on to become nurses and elected officials, teachers, scientists, writers, nonprofit leaders, and more. The university has been an anchor for our students and for the region, giving support and solving problems, in good times and in tough ones.

In honor of the tradition of service and leadership exemplified by these early leaders, the University of Michigan-Flint established the University of Michigan-Flint Medal of Excellence for Leadership and Service in 2016. Now one of the university’s highest honors, the medal is awarded to a visionary who powerfully represents excellence, bold leadership, and unyielding service on behalf of the people of Flint.

The 2018 University of Michigan-Flint Medal of Excellence for Leadership and Service is awarded to Mr. Philip R. Hagerman.

Phil Hagerman co-founded Diplomat Pharmacy, Inc. with his father in 1975, a company which grew to be the nation’s largest independent specialty pharmacy and, in 2014, a publicly traded company on the NYSE. Hagerman was Diplomat’s Chief Executive Office and Chairman of the Board from 1991 to January 2018, and now serves as Chairman Emeritus on Diplomat’s Board of Directors.

For decades, Phil and the Hagerman family have made a difference in the lives of those residing in Genesee County, demonstrating day in and day out the purpose for which the Medal of Excellence for Leadership and Service was created.

Mr. Hagerman founded SkyPoint Ventures in 2013 and remains its CEO. SkyPoint Ventures is a real estate and venture investment firm, headquartered in Flint, focusing on early stage companies in multiple disciplines and engaging the entrepreneurial spirit while developing industry leading processes and technology.

His commitment to entrepreneurism in Flint and the surrounding region extends to the University of Michigan-Flint. Initiatives such as the Hagerman Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Hagerman Student Scholars, and numerous other initiatives in the area are enabling the change and opportunities that will allow Flint and its citizens to thrive.

It is with great pride and gratitude that Mr. Philip R. Hagerman is awarded the University of Michigan-Flint Medal of Excellence for Leadership and Service.

MARTHA S. JONES

Professor Martha S. Jones is a legal and cultural historian. Her research interests include race, law, slavery, citizenship, and the rights of women.

Jones is a Professor of History, and the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor at Johns Hopkins University. She was a faculty member at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, from 2001 to 2017.

Professor Jones said being part of the University of Michigan-Flint April Commencement ceremonies holds special meaning for her.

“Once you are on board at the University of Michigan, whether you are faculty, staff, or a student, you become part of this huge family across the globe,” Jones said. “Coming to Flint is a reminder for me that I am still part of the family, a part of the network, across the country and globe. It’s meaningful.”

Jones was a Presidential Bicentennial Professor, and a Professor of History and Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan. She was also a founding director of the Michigan Law School Program in Race, Law, & History.

Jones earned a PhD from Columbia University and a Juris Doctor degree from the CUNY School of Law. She spent nearly a decade as a public interest lawyer, representing homeless people, women with HIV and AIDS, and people with mental illness.

Professor Jones is author of All Bound Up Together: The Woman Question in African American Public Culture 1830-1900; and Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America. She co-edited Toward an Intellectual History of Black Women.

“As a legal historian, I am still asking questions about the way in which, as a culture and society, we have and have not responded to human needs,” Jones said.

Noor Abdalla enrolled at UM-Flint because she felt the campus and classroom environment would make it easier for her to get involved, and talk to professors. She found this and more at the university.

Abdalla, an Honors student, is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She will be attending dental school after graduation.

“Through the inclusive and close-knit community that the university has to offer, I was able to comfortably make my way through undergrad and overcome the struggle of choosing a career path. I had many incredible advisors and professors help me through the process and aid me in making one of the biggest decisions of my life,” Abdalla said. “The university has been nothing but good to me, and I hope that in the future I will be able to repay the debt that I owe all the wonderful people I have met along the way.”

Abdalla developed a passion for social justice after taking the First Year Experience course “Intergroup Dialogue.”

“Every week we would talk about racial issues, religious issues, and other hot topics people don’t normally talk about,” Abdalla said. “I did not know how much I would love that class. It sparked something inside me.”

She became a peer facilitator for the class, and presented on Islamophobia. “Because of this passion, I came back semester after semester to be a peer facilitator and help teach others what I had learned.”

Abdalla grew up in Flint, and spent six years in the United Arab Emirates before returning to Michigan and enrolling at UM-Flint. She was heavily involved in volunteer work during her college career, including as a camp counselor and at a Flint Township soup kitchen.

In the summer of 2016, she taught Syrian refugees in Lebanon while volunteering for a nongovernmental organization.

“It helped me to see just how lucky I truly am, and how I constantly take things for granted,” Abdalla said. “Because of this realization, I made a promise to myself to use my education to help those who are less fortunate. This experience prepared me for a future in the dental field, where I hope to work alongside vulnerable groups, assisting in dental-related service.”

During her UM-Flint career, Abdalla was heavily involved with research, both on campus and beyond. She conducted research at the University of Illinois in Chicago on the Zika virus as part of her Honors Program off-campus study. Abdalla conducted biology research at UM-Flint and explored a range of other topics, including child labor in India, the lead poisoning in Flint, and the evolution of modern day numerals.

DANIELLE EMERSON

Danielle Emerson joined UM-Flint with a goal of becoming a nurse. During her college career, she learned all the skills it would take. But she also developed a commitment to one day give back as a registered nurse who also teaches to those going into the field.

Emerson is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

“My education, university involvement, and volunteer work have prepared me to undertake the challenges of a career in nursing,” she said.

“My experiences have only increased my resolve to become a nurse. While attending UM-Flint, I have encountered numerous instructors who are clearly dedicated to the success of their students and who truly care about the experiences that students receive. Specifically, my experience with professors in the nursing program has increased my desire to further my education in order to become a nursing educator in the future. I would very much enjoy giving future nursing students the same remarkable educational experiences with which I have been privileged at UM-Flint.”

Emerson said the UM-Flint culture of support made a big impact on her.

“I’ve been able to meet with every instructor I’ve had if I needed to, whether it was English, nursing, chemistry, or any other subject,” she said. “I feel it is a lot easier to be involved at the university, as well as in the community, because faculty speak directly with you about various opportunities.”

Emerson, part of the Honors Program, traveled to Cambodia for her off-campus study as part of a medical mission group from UM-Flint who provided health assessments and health education to those in need. She provided nursing care in villages, hospitals, and orphanages with limited equipment.

“The trip was a very eye-opening and humbling experience,” Emerson said. “I have found this experience to be one of my greatest opportunities for academic, as well as personal growth.”

Emerson devoted a significant amount of time at UM-Flint tutoring other students, including nursing and Honors students.

“Tutoring has bettered me as an individual, while allowing me to better other students’ educations,” said Emerson.

She also contributed to a range of volunteer projects through the university, including at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, a cardiac assessment of teens in Fenton, and more.

THE ACADEMIC MACE AND MEDALLION-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------University of Michigan-Flint ceremonies begin with the Faculty Marshal carrying the university mace. Friends presented the University of Michigan-Flint mace to the institution in 1993. The shaft is four and one-half feet in length and is made of mahogany. The brass orb on top of the shaft is hollow and circumscribed with a band bearing the name of the institution. Within the orb is a paper bearing the names of those who contributed to the funding of the mace and atop the orb is a brass disk inscribed with the seal of the University of Michigan-Flint.

Chancellor Susan E. Borrego was presented with the Medallion on behalf of Academic Affairs upon her arrival to the University of Michigan-Flint as Chancellor and prior to her inauguration. The Medallion is a bronze disk that shows the seal of the University of Michigan-Flint that is worn around the neck during formal ceremonial events such as Commencement.

The Flag of the University of Michigan-Flint represents the individual character of the campus and its close association with the University of Michigan. The “union” next to the staff, which identifies the University of Michigan both by its colors and its legend, is overlapped by the “device.” The uniting by this means of “union” and “field” indicates the bond between University of Michigan-Flint and the other schools of the university and the common purpose they share. The legend “Flint,” delineated in the university colors at the flag’s own left, complements the “union.” The “field” takes its colors from a part of the varicolored flame of the search for truth. The “device,” derived from the University seal, is the lamp of enlightenment resting on the book of learning. The white of the device’s own field supplies a philosophic association as the color of humane letters and a historic association as the color of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, parent college of all.

THE ACADEMIC COSTUME-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The colorful gowns and hoods worn by faculty members at commencement and other academic ceremonies represent the degrees, disciplines, and alma maters of the wearers. The American academic costume tradition, imported from England, dates to Colonial days.

GOWNS - The style of the academic gown differs with the academic degree it represents. The bachelor gown has plain, full sleeves and is without velvet facing down the front. The masters and specialist gowns are identified by long narrow sleeves that are “blind” at the cuff, with slits at elbow-length for the arms. The doctoral gown has full sleeves with velvet chevrons and velvet facing down the front.

Academic gowns are usually black, but some universities permit gowns in the school’s colors. The velvet trimming on the doctor’s gowns is traditionally black, though some universities (including the University of Michigan-Flint) permit the velvet to be of the color distinctive of the discipline to which the degree pertains.

HOODS - The masters hood (short), specialist hood (intermediate), and the doctoral hood (long) carry the distinctive design and the colors of the university where the degree was awarded.

CAPS - Caps vary in style from the traditional black mortarboard to eight-, six-, and four-corner tams, and Elizabethan- style caps. The mortarboard may be of any appropriate material, such as cotton, poplin, rayon, or silk, to match the gown. Velvet is reserved for holders of doctorates. A long tassel is fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap.

OTHER APPAREL - Several graduates are wearing cords or sashes as part of the academic costume. Other than the gold cords that stand for graduating with honors, some of the cords and sashes indicate academic achievement in the other areas such as Service Learning. Other cords and sashes are awarded to students for their participation in clubs and organizations.

The Honors Program consists of a Freshman/Sophomore core curriculum of Honors courses (with a requirement of maintaining a 3.3 GPA), and a Senior Thesis, and Senior Honors Seminar. In order to graduate from the four-year program, students must achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.


Actuarial Excellence Award recognizes the student selected by the faculty of the Mathematics Department who best exemplifies the program’s goal of preparing students for a career as an actuary.

Phi Alpha Theta, National Honor Society in History was established at the University of Arkansas in 1921. Currently there are over 900 chapters with over 350,000 members. Members must maintain a 3.1 minimum GPA in 12 or more credit hours in history, with a 3.0 minimum overall GPA. THE ACADEMIC COSTUME-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The colorful gowns and hoods worn by faculty members at commencement and other academic ceremonies represent the degrees, disciplines, and alma maters of the wearers. The American academic costume tradition, imported from England, dates to Colonial days.

GOWNS - The style of the academic gown differs with the academic degree it represents. The bachelor gown has plain, full sleeves and is without velvet facing down the front. The masters and specialist gowns are identified by long narrow sleeves that are “blind” at the cuff, with slits at elbow-length for the arms. The doctoral gown has full sleeves with velvet chevrons and velvet facing down the front.

Academic gowns are usually black, but some universities permit gowns in the school’s colors. The velvet trimming on the doctor’s gowns is traditionally black, though some universities (including the University of Michigan-Flint) permit the velvet to be of the color distinctive of the discipline to which the degree pertains.

HOODS - The masters hood (short), specialist hood (intermediate), and the doctoral hood (long) carry the distinctive design and the colors of the university where the degree was awarded.

CAPS - Caps vary in style from the traditional black mortarboard to eight-, six-, and four-corner tams, and Elizabethan- style caps. The mortarboard may be of any appropriate material, such as cotton, poplin, rayon, or silk, to match the gown. Velvet is reserved for holders of doctorates. A long tassel is fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap.

OTHER APPAREL - Several graduates are wearing cords or sashes as part of the academic costume. Other than the gold cords that stand for graduating with honors, some of the cords and sashes indicate academic achievement in the other areas such as Service Learning. Other cords and sashes are awarded to students for their participation in clubs and organizations.

THE ACADEMIC MACE AND MEDALLION-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------University of Michigan-Flint ceremonies begin with the Faculty Marshal carrying the university mace. Friends presented the University of Michigan-Flint mace to the institution in 1993. The shaft is four and one-half feet in length and is made of mahogany. The brass orb on top of the shaft is hollow and circumscribed with a band bearing the name of the institution. Within the orb is a paper bearing the names of those who contributed to the funding of the mace and atop the orb is a brass disk inscribed with the seal of the University of Michigan-Flint.

Chancellor Susan E. Borrego was presented with the Medallion on behalf of Academic Affairs upon her arrival to the University of Michigan-Flint as Chancellor and prior to her inauguration. The Medallion is a bronze disk that shows the seal of the University of Michigan-Flint that is worn around the neck during formal ceremonial events such as Commencement.

The Flag of the University of Michigan-Flint represents the individual character of the campus and its close association with the University of Michigan. The “union” next to the staff, which identifies the University of Michigan both by its colors and its legend, is overlapped by the “device.” The uniting by this means of “union” and “field” indicates the bond between University of Michigan-Flint and the other schools of the university and the common purpose they share. The legend “Flint,” delineated in the university colors at the flag’s own left, complements the “union.” The “field” takes its colors from a part of the varicolored flame of the search for truth. The “device,” derived from the University seal, is the lamp of enlightenment resting on the book of learning. The white of the device’s own field supplies a philosophic association as the color of humane letters and a historic association as the color of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, parent college of all.

DANIELLE EMERSON

Danielle Emerson joined UM-Flint with a goal of becoming a nurse. During her college career, she learned all the skills it would take. But she also developed a commitment to one day give back as a registered nurse who also teaches to those going into the field.

Emerson is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

“My education, university involvement, and volunteer work have prepared me to undertake the challenges of a career in nursing,” she said.

“My experiences have only increased my resolve to become a nurse. While attending UM-Flint, I have encountered numerous instructors who are clearly dedicated to the success of their students and who truly care about the experiences that students receive. Specifically, my experience with professors in the nursing program has increased my desire to further my education in order to become a nursing educator in the future. I would very much enjoy giving future nursing students the same remarkable educational experiences with which I have been privileged at UM-Flint.”

Emerson said the UM-Flint culture of support made a big impact on her.

“I’ve been able to meet with every instructor I’ve had if I needed to, whether it was English, nursing, chemistry, or any other subject,” she said. “I feel it is a lot easier to be involved at the university, as well as in the community, because faculty speak directly with you about various opportunities.”

Emerson, part of the Honors Program, traveled to Cambodia for her off-campus study as part of a medical mission group from UM-Flint who provided health assessments and health education to those in need. She provided nursing care in villages, hospitals, and orphanages with limited equipment.

“The trip was a very eye-opening and humbling experience,” Emerson said. “I have found this experience to be one of my greatest opportunities for academic, as well as personal growth.”

Emerson devoted a significant amount of time at UM-Flint tutoring other students, including nursing and Honors students.

“Tutoring has bettered me as an individual, while allowing me to better other students’ educations,” said Emerson.

She also contributed to a range of volunteer projects through the university, including at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, a cardiac assessment of teens in Fenton, and more.

Noor Abdalla enrolled at UM-Flint because she felt the campus and classroom environment would make it easier for her to get involved, and talk to professors. She found this and more at the university.

Abdalla, an Honors student, is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She will be attending dental school after graduation.

“Through the inclusive and close-knit community that the university has to offer, I was able to comfortably make my way through undergrad and overcome the struggle of choosing a career path. I had many incredible advisors and professors help me through the process and aid me in making one of the biggest decisions of my life,” Abdalla said. “The university has been nothing but good to me, and I hope that in the future I will be able to repay the debt that I owe all the wonderful people I have met along the way.”

Abdalla developed a passion for social justice after taking the First Year Experience course “Intergroup Dialogue.”

“Every week we would talk about racial issues, religious issues, and other hot topics people don’t normally talk about,” Abdalla said. “I did not know how much I would love that class. It sparked something inside me.”

She became a peer facilitator for the class, and presented on Islamophobia. “Because of this passion, I came back semester after semester to be a peer facilitator and help teach others what I had learned.”

Abdalla grew up in Flint, and spent six years in the United Arab Emirates before returning to Michigan and enrolling at UM-Flint. She was heavily involved in volunteer work during her college career, including as a camp counselor and at a Flint Township soup kitchen.

In the summer of 2016, she taught Syrian refugees in Lebanon while volunteering for a nongovernmental organization.

“It helped me to see just how lucky I truly am, and how I constantly take things for granted,” Abdalla said. “Because of this realization, I made a promise to myself to use my education to help those who are less fortunate. This experience prepared me for a future in the dental field, where I hope to work alongside vulnerable groups, assisting in dental-related service.”

During her UM-Flint career, Abdalla was heavily involved with research, both on campus and beyond. She conducted research at the University of Illinois in Chicago on the Zika virus as part of her Honors Program off-campus study. Abdalla conducted biology research at UM-Flint and explored a range of other topics, including child labor in India, the lead poisoning in Flint, and the evolution of modern day numerals.

MARTHA S. JONES

Professor Martha S. Jones is a legal and cultural historian. Her research interests include race, law, slavery, citizenship, and the rights of women.

Jones is a Professor of History, and the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor at John Hopkins University. She was a faculty member at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, from 2001 to 2017.

Professor Jones said being part of the University of Michigan-Flint April Commencement ceremonies holds special meaning for her.

“Once you are on board at the University of Michigan, whether you are faculty, staff, or a student, you become part of this huge family across the globe,” Jones said. “Coming to Flint is a reminder for me that I am still part of the family, a part of the network, across the country and globe. It’s meaningful.”

Jones was a Presidential Bicentennial Professor, and a Professor of History and Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan. She was also a founding director of the Michigan Law School Program in Race, Law, & History.

Jones earned a PhD from Columbia University and a Juris Doctor degree from the CUNY School of Law. She spent nearly a decade as a public interest lawyer, representing homeless people, women with HIV and AIDS, and people with mental illness.

Professor Jones is author of All Bound Up Together: The Woman Question in African American Public Culture 1830-1900; and Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America. She co-edited Toward an Intellectual History of Black Women.

“As a legal historian, I am still asking questions about the way in which, as a culture and society, we have and have not responded to human needs,” Jones said.

PHILIP R. HAGERMAN

In 1950, a group of leaders set forth a vision of establishing a first-class college to serve the rising city of Flint, the region, and the people of Michigan.

Since then, the university has educated more than 45,000 students who have succeeded in business and health professions, who went on to become nurses and elected officials, teachers, scientists, writers, nonprofit leaders, and more. The university has been an anchor for our students and for the region, giving support and solving problems, in good times and in tough ones.

In honor of the tradition of service and leadership exemplified by these early leaders, the University of Michigan-Flint established the University of Michigan-Flint Medal of Excellence for Leadership and Service in 2016. Now one of the university’s highest honors, the medal is awarded to a visionary who powerfully represents excellence, bold leadership, and unyielding service on behalf of the people of Flint.

The 2018 University of Michigan-Flint Medal of Excellence for Leadership and Service is awarded to Mr. Philip R. Hagerman.

Phil Hagerman co-founded Diplomat Pharmacy, Inc. with his father in 1975, a company which grew to be the nation’s largest independent specialty pharmacy and, in 2014, a publicly traded company on the NYSE. Hagerman was Diplomat’s Chief Executive Office and Chairman of the Board from 1991 to January 2018, and now serves as Chairman Emeritus on Diplomat’s Board of Directors.

For decades, Phil and the Hagerman family have made a difference in the lives of those residing in Genesee County, demonstrating day in and day out the purpose for which the Medal of Excellence for Leadership and Service was created.

Mr. Hagerman founded SkyPoint Ventures in 2013 and remains its CEO. SkyPoint Ventures is a real estate and venture investment firm, headquartered in Flint, focusing on early stage companies in multiple disciplines and engaging the entrepreneurial spirit while developing industry leading processes and technology.

His commitment to entrepreneurism in Flint and the surrounding region extends to the University of Michigan-Flint. Initiatives such as the Hagerman Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Hagerman Student Scholars, and numerous other initiatives in the area are enabling the change and opportunities that will allow Flint and its citizens to thrive.

It is with great pride and gratitude that Mr. Philip R. Hagerman is awarded the University of Michigan-Flint Medal of Excellence for Leadership and Service.

On behalf of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Club of Greater Flint, it is my pleasure to congratulate you on your graduation and welcome you to membership in the Alumni Association. While you have spent the past several years closely linked to the University of Michigan-Flint campus, your Michigan community just got a lot bigger as you are joining one of the largest alumni bodies in the world!

During your time on campus, UM-Flint has enjoyed remarkable expansion. From growth in the student body to the acquisition of adjacent properties, UM-Flint has continued to enlarge its footprint in the city and beyond. I encourage you to stay in touch and remain connected to campus through the Alumni Association.

Our programs provide a great opportunity to maintain friendships with classmates and faculty, share memories, and engage with fellow UM-Flint alums. Together, alumni make a difference by advocating for UM-Flint, mentoring students, volunteering at events such as Go Blue on the Bricks, and sharing our Michigan pride!
