I’m superexcited to beyour membership coordinator

for another two years! I haveenjoyed meeting many people inour region during my last termand I can’t wait to meet andconnect with more of you!

I know that declining membershipis a growing problem in many ofour choruses; however I don’thave a fix-all solution. This seemsto be a problem in all regions, andwhat works for one chorus orregion doesn’t work for all. I’mlooking into making a Facebookgroup for membershipcoordinators in our region wherewe can brainstorm ideas andshare with each other what hasworked and hasn’t worked whentrying to bring in new members. Iappreciate any feedback on thisidea!

It also appears that sometimes wehave no problem getting people tocome in the door and join for ayear or so, but then they decide tomove on to something else. I’malso looking for ways to enticethese members to stay. Whatmakes you feel welcomed andappreciated in your chorus and inRegion 2? I welcome yourthoughts!

I look forward to seeing many ofyou at Fall Regional. It’s going tobe a great weekend of singing andlearning! If you see me, come onover and introduce yourself! I lookforward to connecting with you!

Eleven members of Region 2will receive their coveted 25-year StarPins at Fall Regional Music SchoolWeekend, Oct. 6 and become officialmembers of the Silver Ribbon Gang. Thepresentation will again be made at theSaturday night program with theirchoruses cheering them on for all theiryears of service to Sweet Adelines.

Celebrating 50 years as members in Sweet Adelines are KAY KASTENS and LAURENESULLIVAN, both from Motor City Blend. Kay has held nearly every job on the chorus andregional level and remarked that she has “wonderful memories of singing in threechoruses, three quartets, under the direction of nine talented directors. I would neverhave believed that I would still be doing this after 50 years!” Laurie was first “introducedto barbershop music while on a date at the 1951 men’s International convention.” Tenyears later, she met her husband and discovered that her date was her husband’sbrother!

All our honorees have been presidents, board and team members, music staff, activemovers and shakers of their choruses and have learned a multitude of music andchoreography since 1993. Congratulations to each for her dedication.

The Star Award was initiated in 1992 and about 400 pins have been presented todeserving members. It was the original brainchild of Nila Krantz, Tri City, and isrecognized as a badge of honor throughout the International organization.

The RMT expanded the criteria for qualifying for the pin by allowing 25 years ofnonconsecutive singing membership to count. Members must have 25 yearsaccumulated membership by the end of the calendar year and have at least fiveconsecutive years actively back in Region 2. Proof of membership is on the part of themember, supported by a letter from the current President or Team Leader to me([email protected]) We celebrate all their years of experience, service to oursisterhood, and their love of the music.

Event Audience Boost

We want our choruses to perform to a great crowd. It gives the singers that natural high, createsatmosphere and leaves us feeling fulfilled when

we hear that sweet applause. Plus, if you put on concerts, ticket sales are a vital part of your revenue, whether it is for covering costs orfundraising. Want a great audience?

Here are five tried and tested ways:

1. Captive audience powerSo, you just thrilled a crowd with your latest repertoire to thunderous applause.Take this opportunity to verbally thank them and announce your next upcomingperformance(s). Watch calendars in those mobile devices get updated on the spot, pronto!

2. Watch the ticket pricingWhen planning a performance, always consider a reasonable ticket price (ofcourse within your budget). Better to have a lot of people coming along at a lowerprice than getting a trickle at a higher price. Nothing is more stressful than gettingthe price wrong and worrying about low tickets sales a week before showtime!Check out other successful events in the same area or venue. What was theiradmission cost?

3. Planning your performance calendarDon’t load too many performances in a short space of time. If your audience isheavy with friends and family of the chorus, you’ll likely experience a law ofdiminishing returns. Your loved ones probably do not want to go to a concertevery week! Review how often you perform, even if this means refusing someopportunities.

4. Promote your performances You don’t have to buy advertising. You can put up posters and flyers in your localshopping centers, libraries, gym, community centers, etc. Ask members to put upposters in their workplace or at their children’s schools (get permission first).Remind your members to mention the performance to friends, family andacquaintances.

5. Word up!Organise a flash mob at a shopping center or local festival (get permission fromthe management or organisers first) and then have a few family and friends handout flyers about your upcoming performance. See if your local radio station willgive your next gig a plug. These types of activities can provide a really exciting‘hook’ for your chorus.

Finally, always keep your audience in mind when planning your performanceprogrammes. Keep your concerts varied, interesting and not too long. Keep themwanting for more, not hoping it will soon end! A happy audience are much morelikely come back ... and with company.

Iam so thrilled and excited to be the Region 2 Education Coordinator for this term! I certainly have some big shoes to fillfollowing my predecessor, Nancy Liedel, but I am up for the challenge and excited to help Region 2 reach for new heights.

A bit about myself: I have been a Sweet Adeline for 20 years and have a great passion for leadership. I have held variouspositions within my chorus including board member, fundraiser chair, and party organizer, just to name a few. I am excited toattend some International Educational Leadership classes in St. Louis this year while I am there to compete with Motor CityBlend.

Our regional Got Harmony? Camp was held in June this summer at the Fenton Community Center in Fenton, Michigan. We had atremendous turnout and we were blown away by the 73 registrations we received. We ended up with wonderful energeticcampers that day. The kids didan amazing job learning theirmusic and choreography andput on a great show thatevening. A big thank you toThe Vibe and Frontier quartetsfor being our teachingquartets for the day. Theywere great and the kids lovedworking with them. All of ourmany volunteers helped outwherever needed and trulymade the day run smoothly.

A huge shout out to NorthernBlend Chorus for all theirwork visiting schools andsigning up campers. Theirpassion for reaching the youthis amazing and so appreciated. A huge standing ovation for all the ladies!

The captain behind the event was our YWIH coordinator Peggy Silver. Her passion for the education of our youth is genuine andher love of barbershop is contagious. What a great well-run event we had under her leadership.

As a followup to the summer camp, please join us at Fall Music School, Friday Oct. 5 for a YWIH forum. We would love to haveat least one representative from each chorus attend. It is open to all that are interested. We will discuss ways for you to reachout in your community and share the joy and passion of barbershop music with students.

I look forward to seeing you all at Fall Regional Music School in a few short weeks. The amazing Diane Porsch will be with ussharing her vast knowledge of our craft. A great weekend is sure to be had by all that attend. Our Show of Champions will be amust-see and a great way to give all of our competitors our love and support as they head to St. Louis.

Harrisville Harmony Weekend# Submitted by Nancy Liedel

The best kept secret in our region! A camping weekendthat includes barbershop harmony all weekend!

Seriously, this has been happening for more than 50 years.Started by the SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation andEncouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America)and then joined by Sweet Adelines. We’ve been singing andringing for years! From award-winning quartets and chorusesto four folks who just met and wanna sing. Everyone gets achance to perform! There's also opportunities to make somemoney by singing at the largest craft show in the state on ashow called “Harmony on the Hill”!

If you love camping and love singing, this is the place to be!Every Labor Day weekend. Harrisville State Park inHarrisville, MI. All the Sweet Adelines sing in a mass chorus intwo shows and then two church services on Sunday of thatweekend. All members of the BHS (Barbershop HarmonySociety) also sing in a mass chorus. Many “throw together”quartets perform. We come from all over! As far away and

Florida and even Canada! It's a fabulous weekend of sittingaround a campfire and ringing some chords. Some folks arethere for two and three weeks! A beautiful park!

However, if camping isn't your thing, there are some localhotels and bed and breakfasts that you can take advantage of!Northern Blend Chorus is our hostess of the weekend andthey all work tirelessly to make all the events fun foreveryone! They even sponsor a golf outing to benefit YWIHprogram in our region.

For many years, the director of the Sweet Adelines masschorus has been Linda Liddicoat. Susan Heimburger istransitioning into that position now. However, Miss Liddy willcontinue to direct “The Chord Busters' March” as the finale.

You should really plan on coming next year. Throw together afoursome and come on up! Or, bring your current quartet! Weneed acts! While you're thinking about it, enjoy theaccompanying photos of all the fun!
