Dear SJV Families

Next Friday 11 November, we will pause to remember the sacrifices made by Australians during all wars and conflicts. It was on this day that the First World War or Great War ended. The Great War endured for four years and claimed the lives of nearly 62,000 Australians. Originally known as Armistice Day, November 11 was renamed Remembrance Day after World War 2 to commemorate people killed during both world wars. The school community will pause at 11:00am on Friday to remember the

sacrifices made by our brave men and women.

Peace

We often think of peace as the absence of war; that if the powerful countries would reduce their

prejudices, fears, and ignorance. Even if we transported all the bombs to the moon, the roots of war

and the reasons for bombs would still be here, in our hearts and minds, and sooner or later we would

make new bombs.

Seek to become more aware of what causes anger and separation, and what overcomes them. Root

out the violence in your life, and learn to live compassionately and mindfully. Seek peace. When you

have peace within, real peace with others will be possible. Thich Nhat Han ( Buddhist monk, teacher,

Virtue for this fortnight: Thankfulness

Thankfulness is to be grateful for what you have. It is an attitude of gratitude for learning, loving and

being. Thankfulness is giving thanks for the special things that come along. It is also being grateful for

the little things that happen around you and within you every day. It is an openness and willingness to

receive each of God’s gifts.

SCHOOL WIDE EXPECTATIONS

Learning Power for this fortnight: Be reflective

SJV ‘Peace on Earth’ Christmas Concert

5.45pm for 6pm start Thursday November 24th

Venue: SJV School Oval (weather permitting)

Duration: approximately 70 minutes

On Thursday 24th November Michael Mangan will be leading the SJV community with his ‘Peace on Earth’ Christmas Concert from 6pm.

Michael Mangan is a composer, teacher and music liturgist who is based in Brisbane. A former specialist music teacher, he has composed over 250 pieces which are widely used in Liturgy and Religious Education programmes in schools and parishes throughout Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. Michael's music is published in North America by World Library Publications, Chicago. His compositions are known for

their "singability" and suitability for liturgical celebrations, especially with children.

During the concert children will sit in class groupings (to be easily marshaled for their items) as a result they will need to present to their class teacher at 5.45pm. Students will perform in year level order & all students are involved in the finale.

Families are invited to bring a blanket & picnic to enjoy, however, as this is a family event alcohol is not permitted. Since students will be sitting in class groups they will need to have eaten before 5.45pm. Parents/caregivers are asked to ensure that children (other than SJV students) are supervised/seated with them and not playing on equipment/courts/elsewhere around the school during the concert.

Costume requirements are as follows:

Prep: Christmas outfits (red, green, white)

Year One: Christmas colours + red nose or antlers

Year Two: Christmas colours

Year Three: Christmas t-shirt

Year Four: Aussie bush outfits (e.g. jeans, check shirt, straw hat, boots) - optional Christmas t-shirt

Year Five: Red or green

Year Six: Red clothes

Michael’s CDs will be on sale for a short time following the concert. Should you wish to purchase a CD cash is required and small notes are appreciated.

We look forward to celebrating with you!

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Scholastic Book Club – Thank you to all families that have purchased books from Scholastic Book Club this year. Your ordering has provided many points for the library to select new books for the children to borrow. Issue 7 Book Club orders have arrived and will be distributed to students by the end of this week. There is one more Book Club catalogue to go out

before the end of the term. This catalogue might be great for Christmas present ideas! Last Week of Borrowing – Next week (Week 6) will be the last week students can borrow books for 2016. From Week 7 students are encouraged to return all their library books so the library system can be updated ready for 2017. It is expected that all books are returned by the end of Week 8 at the latest.

OLD SPORTS POLOS—DONATION TO MISSIONS

Hi Everyone, I am collecting the old sky blue polos to send to a Mission in a third world country (could deck out a whole school in uniforms!!). If you would kindly like to donate your old polos, there will be a collection box at the office and at the uniform shop. This collection will continue into early next year so if your kids are still wearing theirs, we still have time. I'd especially encourage families whose students are leaving SJV to pop their polos in before they go. Thank you very much. My number is 0413 466 351 if you have any questions.

AFTER 3PM AT SCHOOL

Parents are asked to please exit the school grounds with their

children promptly after 3pm. As teachers are still working in their

classrooms after 3pm and often schedule meetings with parents

and colleagues at that time, noise can be a distraction. Your

consideration and understanding is appreciated.

TUCKSHOP

Tuckshop is presently available for first and second break on Mondays and Fridays. It is for this reason that I ask you to consider

volunteering your me to a tuckshop roster. The commitment is approximately once every 6 weeks from 8:45am to 11am. I

would like to see as many mothers, fathers and grandparents as possible to help run the tuckshop efficiently. It is a great way to

meet new Mums and Dads and the children love to see their parents and grandparents at the tuckshop. You are welcome to

nominate a friend with whom you would like to work with.

‘Workplace, Health and Safety’ regulaons make it necessary for ALL CHILDREN to be kept out of the tuckshop at all mes.

If you are a volunteer at another school tuckshop, please spulate what day you work (e.g. First Monday) and I will endeavour to

accommodate your needs. Please indicate below if you are interested in helping at our tuckshop and return the form as soon as

possible. Your tuckshop roster will be emailed to you during the second week of the 2017 school year.

Thank you for your support.
