Notes on Setting:

The SETTING of a short story contributes to and creates its ATMOSPHERE, and in turn, the ATMOSPHERE contributes to and creates the MOOD.

• Setting: aspects of the time and place in which a story takes place that apply to the story and affect the events or characters.

• Atmosphere: the impression or feelings created by the setting.

• Mood: the overall feelings experienced by the characters.

Notes on Irony:

Irony occurs when meaning is hidden or contradictory. There are three types of irony commonly used in short stories:

• Verbal Irony: what is said is different that what is meant

• Situational Irony: what takes place is different that what is expected

• Dramatic Irony: what a character says or believes is different than what the reader knows to be true

Imagery: the use of vivid descriptions to allow the reader to imagine or experience what the author is trying to describe (usually visual)
