Happy Summer Mariners!

It is that time of year again when we present to you our Graduation issue! The culmination of all

our work as educators is the ritual of commencement, the sending forth of our new graduates

into the world. The young women and men of the class of 2013 entered kindergarten in the

fall of 2000—the first group of the new century. They took to technology early on, like fish to

water. They had no learning curve, like the one most of us adults struggled with or overcame.

For them, it was natural and second nature. We refer to them as digital natives, and in their years of learning, especially at

Moreau Catholic, they were given the tools, the moral and ethical education, and many applications and challenges to further

their use of technology and imbed that into the way they live their lives. The Class of 2013 received over 775* acceptances

to colleges and universities, and were offered over $4.6 million in scholarships and grants. They are a remarkable group of

young people, and we are all very proud of their accomplishments, and the mark they have left on our school. We pray for

their happiness, health, and success in college and in life.

We will also inform you of the many exciting programs, events and Mariner stories in this summer issue. Our goal is to

share the vibrancy of the school today along with the news and updates of our Mariner alumni. There really is no significant

difference in the Moreau past and Moreau present—this school is successful because of the continuum of educating

students in the Holy Cross tradition—forming hearts and educating minds; bringing hope to others; and celebrating the

Mariner family in all ways. Moreau Catholic in 2013 is successful because of all that went before, and will continue because

of all those kindergartners starting this fall who will one day make up the class of 2026.

Finally, I would like to thank the over 300 Mariners and friends of Moreau who have contributed to the Campaign for

Champions so far. We are in the final lap of our race to the finish line—constructing our new Athletics & Student

Activities Complex. We hope to start construction in February, and complete the project in August 2014. We can do

this—for our students, who deserve a 21st century facility—and for our alumni, community and friends. But we need your

support more than ever before. Please support the Campaign for Champions with a pledge over three years, or a one-time

The ClaSS of 2013—As Holy Cross Scholars, Moreau Catholic graduates are duly poised to succeed in their chosen endeavors and to unselfishly share their many gifts with their communities. These fine young women and men have been accepted to 775* different universities and colleges across the country and have garnered over $4.6 million in scholarships and grants. Mariners can be especially proud of their 27,162 hours of service which have impacted lives throughout the Bay Area. The ideals of Holy Cross founder Blessed Basil Moreau—Bringing Hope, Educating Hearts and Minds, Being Family and Building Respect—will continue to guide our Mariners throughout their lives. If ten years from now, Time magazine were to do a cover story on you, what would it say?

Sahaj PatelMy goal is to become a doctor and eventually to volunteer in third world countries. If Time magazine were to do a cover story on me, I hope it would speak about my volunteering experiences in which I helped provide medical support to communities that did not have access to hospitals.

Scott LowderMajority Rules: How One Man is Trying to Get Washington Working

Filibuster reform certainly isn’t a sexy political issue like marriage equality or gun control that riles up both sides of the political spectrum. But Scott Lowder isn’t letting that stop him. Armed with the firm belief that our Constitution never intended 60 votes be required for every piece of legislation in the Senate, he wants to make a change. And he’s raising eyebrows all across the capital.

Winners:Moreau Catholic Mock Trial Team

For tHe pASt eigHt yeArS, Moreau Catholic’s students have participated in the Constitutional Rights Foundation Mock Trial program. Social Studies teacher Bob Parker originated the program at Moreau Catholic and his AP World History course has inspired many students to join the Mock Trial Team.

Students role-play in a fictional case as pre-trial attorneys, defense and prosecution attorneys, defense and prosecution witnesses, court clerk, and bailiff. Team members acquire knowledge about the law and rules of evidence, and develop their public speaking, critical thinking and questioning skills. Members of the Mock Trial team also gain an appreciation and understanding of the difficulties that judges, lawyers and juries face in attempting to present and resolve the facts and legal arguments in a case.

This year’s case, People v. Vega, revolved around a hit and run accident with the pre-trial argument centered on Miranda Rights and the admissibility of a statement made by the defendant. Teacher-coaches Petar Zegura and Phil Wilder and attorney-coach James Smith ’97 spent many hours in practice and scrimmages after school and on weekends, forging individual potential into a cohesive team.

THANK You CoACHES: Hayward Hero and 40-year faculty member, Petar Zegura; history teacher, Phil Wilder; and Moreau Catholic graduate, attorney-coach James Smith ’97, developed the team’s skills, cohesion and winning strategy.

During the state finals in Riverside, California, Moreau Catholic’s Mock Trial Team outscored schools with more abundant resources. Class of 2013 members of the Mock Trial Team experienced moments of uninhibited joy which compensated for the grueling time commitment of simultaneously preparing for semi-final, final and state competitions as well as graduation. Attorney Scott Lowder ’13 is headed to Georgetown University and hopes to eventually clerk for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Pretrial attorney Dennis Gill ’13 calmed his mind before the last of the day’s three competitions. He will attend UC Davis in the fall.

Top honors were given to Neil Barot ’13 (left) as one of three defense attorneys and Shane Looker ’13 for defense witness “Aubrey Fox.” Neil was accepted to MIT and Harvard. He is spending the summer as an intern at the United States Mint in Washington D.C. Shane will attend Gonzaga University.

The pretrial issue in People v. Vega centered on whether the defendants interactions with the police amounted to a custodial interrogation.

Pre-trial attorney Nathan Yu’s ’15 argument for dismissal invoked the Fifth Amendment and the U.S. Supreme Court decision as set forth in Miranda v. Arizona.

in tHeir MoCk triAl CoMpetitionS, Moreau Catholic’s team achieved a number of firsts: They advanced to the county championships for the first time where they won the Alameda County semi-final and final trials which awarded them the honor of representing the county at the state level.

The California final competitions were held in Riverside, CA where 34 teams from around the state assembled to determine which team would compete in the national championship. The teams found out a week in advance which side of the case (defense or prosecution) they would be presenting and the name of the school they would be facing in the first trial on Friday night.

The competition was cloaked in secrecy as the results of the trials were never announced until the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Except for the first trial, the team never knew which side they would be arguing or the team they would be facing until the lineups were posted with less than two hours remaining before the next competition.

After the four trials were concluded, the names of the two finalist teams were announced at the Constitutional Rights Foundation dance at 11 p.m. On Sunday afternoon, the team, filled with suspense, went to the awards ceremony where the individual and top 8 team awards were presented. Moreau’s team was recognized with individual awards as Neil Barot ’13 was named one of California’s top 3 defense attorneys and Shane Looker ’13 was named as the best individual for the role of “Aubrey Fox” in the State!

The last awards were the team awards and were based on a win-loss record and an average point score. In just their first experience at the state championships, Mariners finished in 5th place and their only loss, a narrow one, was to the eventual winner and now 3-time champion, La Reina High School from Thousand Oaks, CA. After the state championships the excitement continued as the team presented a mock trial case for students, faculty and staff; they were recognized for their accomplishments at meetings of the Hayward City Council, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, and at a luncheon with Alameda County Superior Court judges.

next year...The team has already begun to plan its activities for 2013-14. They are hosting Mock Trial Summer Camp and have established scrimmages and invitationals when they return to school. Next year’s Mock Trial Team needs and would greatly appreciate your support. BoB Parker Holocaust education, 2013 Morris Weiss aWard reciPientMoreau Catholic Social Studies teacher Bob Parker was honored with the Morris Weiss Award for his dedication to teaching the lessons of the Holocaust and patterns of genocide in his AP World History classes. The award was presented at a ceremony in San Francisco in recognition of Bob's depth of understanding, moral courage and personal responsibility in developing this area of study for Moreau Catholic students. The $1,000 prize will be donated to the Library and Learning Commons at Moreau Catholic and will be used to further Holocaust education. Bob Parker exemplifies the caliber of faculty at Moreau Catholic, moving learning beyond the boundaries of the classroom through participation in programs such as Close up and through his development of the Mock trial Club eight year's ago. Congratulations and thank you Bob!


Since 1988, Moreau Catholic High School has honored individuals who have made a significant impact on the school community through their generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure. The annual volunteer service award is given in honor of John A. Raimondi and is the highest honor Moreau Catholic confers on a volunteer.

John Raimondi was a Moreau Catholic parent who volunteered from 1971 until his untimely death in 1986 at age 47. His commitment to the Moreau Catholic community are the inspiration for the award that bears his name.

On May 5th, Phyllis Moroney, an alumni parent, Board of Trustees member, community activist, benefactor, and tireless volunteer, was presented with the John A. Raimondi Volunteer Service Award by President Terry Lee. Members of the Raimondi Family, the Holy Cross Brothers, the Board of Trustees, Administration, faculty, staff, and friends were present to witness this joyful occasion.

Phyllis and her husband, Jean, began their involvement with Moreau Catholic in 1978 with the enrollment of their two Mariner children, John ’82 and Siobhan ’85. Phyllis and Jean loved working with the Mariner Band program and never missed any of their children’s performances. In recognition and appreciation of her contributions to the Band program, the Moreau Catholic Jazz Band performed at the award ceremony.

Phyllis has contributed countless hours working on several of Moreau Catholic’s important committees including the Board of Trustees, Board Matters Committee, Mission Integration Committee, Institutional Advancement Committee, and the Transforming Tomorrow Steering Committee. According to past President Dr. Joseph Connell, “Phyllis was a natural leader. She pitched in wherever needed.”

IN FIELDS AS VARIED as election politics, science and sports, advertising and public health, data-driven discovery and decision-making relies on higher math. Predictive modeling of everything from the economy to the weather requires sophisticated statistical tools that interpret complex numerical information. Many of the most interesting and best paying careers of the future will belong to those who “do math.”

Moreau Catholic’s math faculty is committed to providing students with deep insight and understanding that goes beyond computation. The most current and innovative methods are applied in providing numerative, quantitative and spatial literacy. Technology is integrated across the math curriculum and fosters exploration of mathematical relationships beyond the classroom.

As an example, many Moreau Catholic math teachers have moved to the “flipped classroom” model. Lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while class time is devoted to reinforcing concepts through collaborative activities or discussions.

Students work in small groups with their desks arranged in pods. The teacher moves from group to group offering guidance. If there is a stumbling block, the entire class reviews the topic. To ensure that concepts are being mastered, the teacher randomly calls on students to explain their work and an online quiz is used for assessment after each lesson.

This year e-texts and an e-resource, MathXL, were integrated into the math curriculum. MathXL is a powerful online homework, assessment and tutorial program that gives students immediate feedback through interactive learning aids.

Geometer’s Sketchpad is another interactive software tool that provides students with a deeper understanding and awareness of geometric relationships while engaging their interest. Students manipulate mathematical diagrams while maintaining their fundamental definition and use the program for visualization and problem solving. Sketchpad is also used for projects demonstrating non-Euclidean and hyperbolic geometry.

Geometry teacher Brittany Debrauwere gets her students out of their chairs in her version of the video game, Dance, Dance Revolution. “Dance, Dance Geometry,” as Brittany calls it, makes learning theorems associated with angles and parallel lines fun. As students progress through the courses, teachers place more emphasis on independent learning, communication and student responsibility for their work. The department meets to discuss and evaluate students’ performance at every level in order to effectively plan and guide them toward their individual goals.

MATH CHAIR BARB MANGIARDI uses Fathom software as a teaching tool for data analysis and modeling in her AP Statistics class. Fathom provides a dynamic, visually compelling environment with sophisticated graphing capabilities. Chris Torres ’13 will be attending George Mason University in the fall as an Economics major, an area of study requiring an understanding of statistics and predictive modelling.

NATHAN ZEGuRA ’96, teacher Petar Zegura’s son, segued from a successful career as a business analyst to partnering with Ashton Kutcher in Fantasy Football Live. Nathan’s expertise in “identifying true key predictors through statistical analysis,” enabled him to define his own dream job. He can be seen on the CBS Sports Network. MATH AS ART Moreau Catholic’s math classes encourage engagement and creativity. In Britanny Debrauwere’s Geometry class, students learn mathematical principals through projects such as proportion scaling, origami and tessalations.

Champions don’t quit half way...

Initially, Steve klein ’78 was a very reluctant Mariner. Like any teenager, Steve wanted to be with his friends and they were enrolling at Newark Memorial High School. Steve’s parents, however, had a different idea. Steve and his siblings Karen ’79, Linda ’80, and Michael ’84, were going to attend Moreau Catholic. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Klein!

At Moreau Catholic, Steve learned that many of his classmates were also from Newark. He carpooled with tom Bowen ’79, Steve Snarr ’78, paul Couchot ’80 and Denise Couchot ’78, oscar Vega ’78, and Jim goudreau ’77 who became his life-long friends.

“Moreau was a great experience for me. the discipline and hard work required to succeed really helped me grow up. i will always remember the Friday night football games. playing for Coach Vermeil and the bonds established with my teammates were fantastic experiences.”

Post Moreau Catholic, Steve graduated from UC Davis in Managerial Economics and obtained an MBA in Finance from UCLA. He went to work for the national real estate development firm of Trammel Crow in Los Angeles. In 1990 he created his own real estate investment company, Bridge Partners, which does business in 18 states.

Steve has never forgotten his Moreau Catholic roots and is a generous contributor to the school’s tuition assistance program and the various capital improvement projects that keep the campus well maintained. As a Legacy Circle donor to Campaign for Champions he is Helping Moreau Catholic Regain the Home Field Advantage. Recently, Steve has been active in building support to name the football field after Coach Al Vermeil in honor of a man who was his coach, mentor, and friend. thank you for all you do for Moreau Catholic, Steve!

As you can see from the “deed” issued during the construction of the original Moreau Catholic High School football field, things have changed. It is hard to imagine that today you could install a football and soccer field for $13,000, including sprinklers!

Although the price for a football/soccer field with artificial turf, an eight lane all-weather track, lighting, scoreboard, and bleachers is considerably higher at $5,000,000, the Mariner community is pulling together in the Campaign for Champions to realize this dream for the current and future generations of Mariners.

Become a part of the new Athletics and Student Activities Complex. it will take the entire Mariner community to make this happen.

The Nuestra Gente club sponsored Fiesta Méxicana de la Primavera, a beautiful and colorful showcase of regional dances from México. México Danza ballet folklorico group performed to a sellout crowd of over 500 people in the Teves Theatre. The showcase also featured Mariachi Mexicanisimo of Hayward as well as current students and alumni: Marco del rio ’13, Sofia Segura ’15, Sergio Segura ’11, elizabeth Morales ’03, and Magdalena nevel ’09.

OvER 160 PEOPlE gathered at the 4th Annual Funding Hopes and Dreams Luncheon to hear keynote speaker Archbishop Alex J. Brunett and alumnus Christopher Baca ’12 address the importance of tuition assistance in the lives of Moreau Catholic students.

Archbishop Brunett founded the Fulcrum Foundation while leading the Archdiocese of Seattle, an organization that has raised over $50M for tuition assistance. He challenged the luncheon guests to fulfill their roles in providing a Catholic college-preparatory education to students who otherwise might not be able to afford the cost of tuition.

Alumnus and tuition assistance recipient, Chris Baca ’12, inspired the audience by sharing his story. While at Moreau Catholic, Chris, the consummate athlete, played varsity football, basketball, and baseball while working part-time to contribute to the cost of tuition.

athletic classroom, in a small way. Getting eight large-size

aluminum pipes from Army surplus and having those welded

two each; making them four story aluminum uprights—two

uprights for the scoreboard and two uprights for the outdoor

speakers and future lights.

Pouring the retaining wall was lots of fun, but hard work.

Everything was approved by the City of Hayward.

I still remember the day that the parents, students, and

faculty put down the sod from one goal post to the next goal

post in one day. Yes indeed, teamwork; but all with that family spirit that exists in the present Moreau Catholic High School.

As I was a part of the first outdoor/athletic classroom, I also want to contribute by giving a small donation to Terry Lee for the new

outdoor Athletic Complex from my community fund earned from recycling honest copper wire and aluminum cans. So in closing,

Ms. lisa tortorich has joined the Mariner family as Principal. Previously, Lisa held the position of Principal at Mercy High School in Burlingame, CA. She began her career in Catholic education at Holy Names High School in Oakland, CA. After several years, she moved to the corporate world and worked as an Apple Educational Sales Representative and enrolled in the Educational Technology program at the University of San Francisco, Graduate School of Education. In 2005, Lisa joined a team of administrators and educational leaders at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, CA. as an Assistant Principal. With her years of experience as an administrator in Catholic education combined with her experience in developing online curricula, Lisa is uniquely qualified to lead Moreau Catholic.

“I look forward to getting to know the students, families, and alumni, and collaborating with a team of educators who are dedicated to Catholic education within the Holy Cross tradition," said Lisa. "I am committed to moving forward with educating the hearts and minds of a new generation of learners in this rapidly changing world. NATHAN ZEGuRA ’96 was genetically preloaded with a talent for numbers. Anyone who has had a casual lunchtime conversation with dad, Social Studies and Economics teacher Petar Zegura, can verify that pater Petar can pull out streams of numbers and facts from memory without tripping. Like father, like son, however, Nathan does it for a national audience on CBS Sports and on SiriusXM.

Nathan graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BA and MA in Political Science from Emory University. His talent for numerical analysis landed him at McKinsey & Co. as a strategic management consultant for Fortune 500 clients. His time there schooled him in the “art of modeling and in identifying/discovering/studying the true key predictors to future success in any given industry.”

Many people would deem Nate’s first chapter as a successful endpoint to a career, but it was only the beginning of, as he describes, “a wild ride.” Nathan played fantasy football (perhaps obsessed with, is more accurate) for 15 years and served as a “consultant” to friends. His wife Elissa suggested that he needed to convert his hobby into a

business and his web-based fantasy football business was born. Clients could sign up and get personalized advice that enabled them to make playoffs at the rate of 90%, while 50% went on to win at least one of their leagues each year. Nate’s success is attributable to his cold blooded analytical skills: “No place for homerdom, no place for emotion, no place for personal attachments in fantasy football; you need to get the best players who are producing the best stats.”

Next came national exposure and a high profile bromance. Movie star and entrepreneur Ashton Kutcher was looking for good fantasy football advice. A player for over ten years, Kutcher was introduced to The Fantasy Consultant, Zegura. “I started checking out his materials and checking out his site and the stuff that he was doing and I thought, this guy’s information is about as good as anybody’s I have ever seen,” stated Kutcher. Instead of simply subscribing to Nathan’s website, Kutcher became a full partner. Nathan eventually sold half of his business to Kutcher’s company, Katalyst.

Nathan is currently the host of SiriusXM Fantasy Consultant and joined the

excellent team at CBSSports.com. When asked about the highlights of his career, Nathan had many: “Some of my favorite moments were doing Fantasy Football Live with Ashton Kutcher. I did a radio show called 1st and Awesome with my good friend, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar, The Miz. We interviewed one of my favorite sports personalities, The Sports Guy, Bill Simmons. I worked with both 49er legend Randy Cross and fantasy football and Philly Eagles legend, Brian Westbrook. I was also fortunate enough to get to work the Super Bowl for CBS Sports last year and I spent a week in New Orleans previewing the big game. One day, Emmitt Smith was our guest and I was wearing a navy velvet blazer. After the interview, Emmitt told me, “That’s a sweet coat bro!” Emmitt Smith! It has been a humbling experience to say the least and sometimes I have to pinch myself because in many ways, I am truly living the dream.”

Nathan Zegura offered Moreau Catholic students some great advice: “if you work hard, have passion and belief, you really can live your dreams too.”

During his time at Moreau Catholic High School, Dave Capurro ’77 was more interested in sports and

extracurricular activities than academics or community involvement. Fellow alumnus Jason Blair ’89 said he too enjoyed all the other aspects of high school—especially dances and team sports–but academics was a bit further down the list.

Decades later, both Capurro and Blair not only work together as Moreau alumni at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) of Alameda County, but they have found a renewed sense of spirituality that aids them in their respective careers as pillars of the community.

Since 2008, Capurro has been on the Board of Trustees at St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County, and is currently serving as treasurer. He also serves on the Development Committee. Blair is the Director of Finance and Human Resources. He came to SVdP in 2008, having previously worked as the Moreau Director of Athletics for several years.

“I definitely understand the importance of volunteerism,” Blair said. “I walked away from Moreau with an understanding that the community needs assistance, and it opened my eyes that we all have different struggles.”

St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County has a motto—Neighbors Helping Neighbors. The organization turns 75 next year and includes three main components: the Community Center in downtown Oakland; the grassroots Vincentian volunteers at 43 Catholic parishes throughout the county; and social enterprises (three thrift stores, the Redux studios & gallery in Alameda, and e-waste recycling) to fund the programs.

The SVdP Community Center includes a dining room that feeds up to 800 meals per day, five days a week; drop-in centers for men, women and children; two job-training programs; Homeless Court through Alameda County Superior Court; free clothing giveaway; health clinics; and referrals.

Board Trustee Capurro remarked upon the similarities between Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in France in 1833, and Blessed Basil Moreau. “The two were friends,” he said.

“Frederic sought to renew faith of all people in Christ by living the Gospel following Jesus’ example of serving the poor. Additionally Frederic had a passion for truth and education,” Capurro said.

Father Moreau established a St. Vincent de Paul conference at his school in Le Mans, France in 1844. Later he invited Frederic to come to Le Mans and address his students.

Moreau Mariners are especially active at St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County as volunteers. Last year, students volunteered in the Community Center, working in the Dining Room, Clothing Closet, and at the Center for Women and Children.

mary Keaveney anderson ’74

was named the 2013 Utah Middle School Principal of the

Year by the Utah Association of Secondary Schools. She

was selected for her outstanding leadership, educational

innovations, and use of data to improve student achievement,

especially for students challenged in reading and math. Under

Mary’s leadership, Union Middle School established a Positive

Behavior Interventions and Supports framework along with

small intervention classes that focus on students’ individual

needs. She also helps develop new teachers and mentor

aspiring and new principals.

is a member of the Board of Trustees for Jesuit High School

in Carmichael, CA where she works closely with Mrs. Lorraine

Paul who is the newly appointed Interim Principal at Jesuit High

School. Mrs. Paul was the Dean of Women at Moreau when

she and her sister Jayna Heinlein lloyd ’84 attended Moreau

Catholic in the early 80’s.

is a neuropsychologist specializing in recovery from acquired

brain injury. She earned her PhD from the City University

of New York and completed her post doctoral fellowship

at New York University Medical Center. Shelley recently

received awards from the Red Cross for her work as Disaster

Mental Health Area Lead in San Francisco and from the San

Francisco Psychological Association for her volunteerism and

commitment to diversity.

anabela cardoso da costa ’89

graduated from the University of San Francisco with a

BS in Biology. She then attended medical school and did

her Residency training at Alameda County Medical Center-

Highland Hospital. She and her husband, Emmanuel da Costa,

have two beautiful children: Raquel, age 10 and Marco, age 5.

They recently moved to Marion, MA and are enjoying living near

Cape Cod. Anabela is now working for SouthCoast Physician

Group as an Internal Medicine physician.

earned her M.A. in Pastoral Ministries, Liturgical Music from

Santa Clara University in 1995. Her liturgical composition “Be

Still” was published by GIA in 1999. Denise’s essay Harry Potter

was crowned Mrs. California 2013 in the Beauties of the Nation

pageant over Memorial Day weekend. In addition to winning

the state title, she won the Spokes-Model Award and received

one of the top two overall high scores in the entire pageant.

AnneMarie’s daughter, Rebecca, was crowned Miss Teen

California in the same ceremony.

Karla Kelly leiper ’92

met her husband, Kieran Leiper, at Saint Mary’s College in

1995. She earned a BA in Psychology and Spanish in 1996

at SMC and a MA in Clinical Psychology in 2000 from John

F. Kennedy University. Kieran and Karla were married in

2000 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. She is a licensed Marriage

and Family Therapist who is currently a stay at home mother

of five children, which includes identical twin boys born in

January, 2013.

country for the last 10 years for her job at GE Capital—from

Connecticut to St.Louis to Dallas. They are now settled back

in the northeast to start their family. Elizabeth Yvette Elliott was

Jeffrey surban ’11 transferred to Loyola Marymount University (one of the top

20 film schools in the world according to The Hollywood

Reporter) to study Film and Television. He just completed his

sophomore thesis film with the help of Mariner friends: Andrea

Aranzamendez ’11, emily nikzat ’11, and Adalberto

ramirez ’11. The film recently won the honor of being among

the three best thesis projects produced by Jeffrey’s class

section. After just a year of study, he now interns at two film

and television companies in Los Angeles: Mpower Pictures and

the Producers Guild of America.

Hello Mariner Family!

It has been exactly four years since I graduated with the Class of 2009 and what an amazing journey it has been! As I continue my Catholic education at the University of San Francisco (USF) as a Communication Studies major with a minor in Public Relations, I can say that everything I learned at Moreau has motivated me to do my very best at everything I try.

During my freshman and sophomore years of college, I was very involved with USF’s Filipino

Club, named USF Kasamahan. The club hosts a Filipino Culture Night every year that includes a performance much like Moreau Catholic’s Spirit Week Rally. During my sophomore year, I earned the lead role in the skit, an honor that is usually always given to a senior. The same day of the performance, I auditioned to be a performer for Walt Disney World in Florida. A week later, I found out Walt Disney World was going to be my new home for the next school year.

Taking a year off from school and moving to a different state on my own was a difficult decision, but my dream of performing for Disney World was bigger than any fear or doubt I had. Performing in shows and parades, as well as living in the Most Magical Place on Earth are among the most unforgettable experiences of my life. I met celebrities such as Neil Patrick Harris, Justin Bieber, Boyz II Men, Hanson, and even performed when President Obama visited. To say it was a fairytale come true is an understatement.

When I returned from Disney World, I decided to take my personal blog to a whole new level by turning it into a fashion and lifestyle blog. After revising the content, I submitted it to a startup fashion company called Boutine. They liked it so much, they offered me an internship as their Public Relations Assistant. I have worked at SF Fashion Week and hosted SF FashTech Night at Club Temple. I was interviewed by Huffington Post, met some designers from Burberry, and even interviewed my celebrity idol, MTV’s Lauren Conrad. Pepsi also featured me as a guest-writer on their official website to report about Beyonce’s half-time performance at the 2013 Super Bowl.

In addition to my fashion internship, I also balanced going to school full-time and working part-time at Urban Outfitters. Surprisingly, I was still able to maintain above a 3.5 GPA. Within six months, I was promoted to a full-time Women’s Accessories Supervisor.

I am currently a Sales Advisor for H&M’s flagship store in downtown San Francisco, working on short films, and freelance writing for online magazines while maintaining my blog and focusing on school. I could not be more blessed with all the opportunities that have come my way after graduating from Moreau Catholic. Life after Moreau has been fabulous. I can not wait to see where life takes me after USF.

2013 Hall of Fame inductees, Stephanie (Meneze) Sontag ’85 and Don Morneau. Stephanie was honored for her contribution to Moreau Catholic basketball. Don Morneau was honored for his coaching of multiple sports, including 20 years as coach of the golf team.

Athletes are nominated for inclusion in the Moreau Catholic Hall of Fame by their peers based on achievements and awards earned as a student athlete at Moreau Catholic, and demonstration of leadership and Holy Cross values.
