The Valley Views Issue 28 | June 2017 Council recently conducted one of its most successful community engagement programs, when we travelled around Yass Valley holding 11 community meetings to introduce our 2017-2021 Delivery Program and 2017-2018 Operational Plan & Budget. I would like to express my gratitude to the community associations and organisation that we worked very closely with to promote these meetings, and to thank all who attended. Councillors and Council staff got a lot out of these meetings, the face- to-face communication is invaluable as we work with our community, to make Yass Valley the best it can be. We received over 400 submissions on these documents, which Council debated at the May Council meeting with the final documents now adopted. Please visit our website for more information. Yass Valley Council has made a commitment to improve our community engagement. This commitment will come in many forms and over a number of years. In the short term we are rolling out a number of surveys, so that we can hear directly from our community, to understand their thoughts and opinions. We encourage you to get involved and get those around you involved. We all love where we live and want to make it the best community it can possible be, but to do this we need input from our residents and businesses. Friday, 12th May 2017 marked the opening of the new concrete Dicks Creek Road Bridge at Nanima, near Murrumbateman, replacing an almost 60-year-old timber bridge that served the community well but was in desperate need of replacement.

Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja said local residents welcomed the funding under the Bridges Renewal Programme Round Two to rebuild Dicks Creek Road Bridge.

“With the 1960 bridge starting to deteriorate Yass Valley Council, due to safety concerns, had to impose a 5-tonne load limit which caused signifi cant inconvenience to residents and businesses within the area,” Senator Seselja said. “This new bridge will improve safety and access for residents and save money for freight operators – delivering dollars into the pockets of local businesses and supporting local jobs.”

Mayor of Yass Valley Rowena Abbey said Yass Valley was like many rural councils which have a number of timber bridges, which, over many years, have deteriorated and now need to be replaced.

“In December 2016 Council adopted a Bridge Rehabilitation Program to ensure the remaining eleven bridges are replaced as soon as fi nancially possible,” Cr Abbey said. “On behalf of Yass Valley Council and our local residents I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to both the Federal and State Governments, this funding will prove invaluable to our community.”

Local resident Lindsey Butt remembers the day the original bridge was built, with his father Owen Butt one of the many local families who supplied timber and labour for its construction.

“I was about 10 years old when the original Dicks Creek Bridge was constructed and I remember helping my father get the timber ready for the bridge construction crew,” Mr Butt said. “The bridge has served its purpose for many years but was in desperate need of replacement and today is a great occasion for the residents of the area, and I would like to thank all involved.”

The Dicks Creek Road bridge project was jointly funded with the Australian Government providing $723,000 under the Bridges Renewal Programme and the New South Wales Government contributing $723,000 under the Fixing Country Roads Program.

DON’ T s h r e d AND r e c y c l e !Yass Valley Council’s recycling provider (Re.Cycle Canberra) will no longer be accepting shredded paper from our yellow recycling bins. Any load of recycling material that is contaminated with SHREDDED paper will be sent to landfi ll by Re.Cycle, defeating the purpose of recycling in the fi rst place. Yass Valley Council will also be fi ned for any contaminated loads of recycling.

Transfer stations will accept SHREDDED paper from residents (not businesses) free of charge or you can simply place your shredded paper in your green rubbish bin. Alternatively you may wish to consider some of these methods to re-use shredded paper.

• Pack stuff with it.• Scent it with essential oil and make a sachet.• Use it as animal bedding or donate it to a vet or

animal shelter.• Extend your kitty litter.• Make your own paper!• Use it as mulch.• Use it in place of rice or confetti.• Use it for fun art projects, like papier-mâché,

scarecrows or costumes.• Use it in your worm farm.

The project was initially made possible when TransGrid donated redundant power poles several years ago and from there the support for the project grew.• Terry Lemon (Yass Roos) & Ben Spencer (Binalong Brahmans) donated their time

and machinery to complete the excavation work.• TransGrid donated their time and machinery to relocate the poles from Council’s

depot to each of the sporting facilities. • Jeremy Pateman (Pateman Power Solutions) was engaged as a contractor

to install and connect new LED lights. Jeremy coordinated the project with TransGrid and the many volunteers.
