“There are few places in theUnited States where you canlearn about co-ops at theundergraduate level, and the factthat this is happening here is

thanks in large part to co-operatives in our region workingt o g e t h e r t h r o u g h o u rassociations, and then working inc o l l a b o r a t i o n w i t h t h eEconomics Department atUMASS Amherst to create theseopportunities. This would not behappening without VAWC."

Emily concludes: "It will beuseful when it comes to speakingto prospective clients at OxbowDesign Build about who we areany why we chose to become aco-operative. This will bothchallenge me and help Oxbowgrapple with the questions wemay face as we make ourtransition, and hopefully canserve as a good 'case study' aboutthe co-operat ive bus ines smodel.”

Concern for Community

The worker co-operative identity is further detailed by the WorldDeclaration on Co-operative Worker Ownership established by CICOPA(The International Organisation of Industrial, Artisan and ServiceProducers’ Co-operatives) in 2004.

The Valley Alliance of Worker Co-operatives (VAWC) is rooted in the idealsof co-operation, mutuality and solidarity. VAWC is itself an expression ofco-operative principles — a “co-op of co-ops” that have come together as ameans of strengthening the efforts of our individual co-ops to develop theirbusinesses, serve their members, and contribute to the wider co-operativeeconomy. Our core goal is to provide ourselves with the resources andsupport we need to advance our co-operatives, empower our members, andbene"t more people in our communities.
