From the Associate Dean Dr. Ann Eisenberg
Dear Honors Students, Welcome back for the 2010-11 academic year at SA! We are gearing up for a fun and exciting semester. This year, the Honors College theme is "All Things Green and Clean." The theme is based on the book for the Honors College and the University's Freshman Common Reading, Farewell, My Subaru by Doug Fine. All members of the UTSA community are invited to come hear Doug Fine speak during Roadrunner Days -- at 3:00 on Monday, August 23rd in the Retama Room (UC 2.02.02). You will also see some changes on your next visit to the Honors College offices. For starters, those of you who are used to taking elevators 3 and 4 all the way up to the Honors office may be a bit confused. Over the summer, the fourth floor of the JPL became part of the UTSA Library, which meant that the Library needed to control access to the fourth floor, as it did previously on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Thus, to get to the Honors office, you now have to take elevator 1 or 2 to the second floor, exit there, and then take elevator 3 or 4 to the fourth-floor. You can also join me in my heart-healthy and environmentally-friendly campaign by entering through the library and then taking the stairs, which are located at the back, right-hand side of the library. When you make it to the Honors office, you'll see some new faces. In mid-July, Caroline Castellanos left the Honors College to take a job as a dual-credit history teacher at Johnson High School. While Caroline will be missed, we are pleased to announce that we have hired Alegra Lozano as our new Assistant Director for Recruitment and Student Programs. Alegra comes to us most recently from the Downtown Advising Center, where she served as advisor for the College of Architec-ture. Alegra is excited about getting to know members of

the Honors College, planning activities and outings, and working with the University Honors Student Association. This year, for the first time ever, we will also be electing a Student Advisory Board. The Student Advisory Board will work with the Dean and the Faculty Advisory Board to recommend policy and curricular changes. We will have a representative from each class (freshman, sophomore, etc.) as well as each of the other academic colleges. Students will be able to self-nominate themselves for positions on the Student Advisory Board and a vote will follow. Please keep an eye on your preferred email address so that you will have a chance to get involved! The Honors College also has a new faculty member, Profes-sor John Phillip Santos, who will begin teaching Honors courses in writing and cultural studies in spring 2010 and two new staff members with close connections to the Honors Col-lege. You can learn more about all our new additions on page 3 of this newsletter. I hope you'll take the time to read the newsletter closely, so you don't miss out on any activi-ties. Join your fellow Honors students at Casino Night on September 9th or visit our Canstruction® display in the UC during Roadrunner Days. There's much more to come!
Yours,

Greetings Honors College Students!
Welcome to the fall 2010 semester at UTSA!
Summer has been busy in the Honors College as we have welcomed new students during orientation and planned new things for returning students. Cooler temperatures are on the horizon, and swimsuits will soon be replaced with warm-up suits. Classes begin Wednesday, August 25, and you will want to start the semester as prepared as possible. Please take the time to read the important dates listed in the calendar on page 31. Mark these events on your personal calendar to reference throughout the semester. Getting involved with student activities will enrich both your academic and personal tenure at UTSA. Here are some additional suggestions you should consider as you prepare for the fall term. 1 If you have taken summer courses at a commu-
nity college or another university, make certain to have final transcripts sent to the Registrar’s office.
2 Visit the Honors College website for information
on scholarships, scholarship deadlines, articles about your peers’ experiences as Honors stu-dents, conference news, and resources you may need. The forms you often ask us for are avail-
able on the HC website for your convenience. www.utsa.edu/honors (click Current Students and then Forms).
3 Seniors who are graduating in fall 2010 must ap-
ply to participate in the Honors College gradua-tion ceremony. Visit the Honors College website at http://www.utsa.edu/honors/hcforms.html to locate the form. The Honors College Com-mencement ceremony will take place on Friday, December 17h .at 2:00 p.m.
4 Seniors graduating in spring 2011 must apply for
graduation by November 15, 2010. You can ap-ply for graduation on the UTSA website at: http://www.utsa.edu/registrar/graduation.cfm.
5 New Honors College members should consider
getting involved in the University Honors Student Association (UHSA). As a member of the Honors College, you are automatically a member of this student-run organization, which provides a forum for you to get to know fellow Honors students, expand your UTSA experience beyond the classroom in a social setting, and make a contri-bution to the success of the Honors College! We will send you invitations to various UHSA activi-ties throughout the semester, so check your email regularly.
We are proud of your academic success and look forward to helping you continue as one of the best and brightest at UTSA!
"One Student, One Advisor, One Plan for Success!"
Best regards, Diana, Ricardo, & Sherry

Alegra Lozano Assistant Director Student and Alumni Programs
Alegra Lozano is a native of San Antonio and an alumnus of UTSA, earning both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at UTSA. She earned her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Health in 1998 and her M.A. in Counseling in 2001. Alegra graduated with Honors in the graduate counseling program, and served as President of the Graduate Counseling Honors Society, Chi Sigma Iota for two years. Alegra has been with UTSA for 7 years, working with students in advising and student learning assistance. She has advised and mentored all levels of UTSA students from freshmen through seniors. She also has participated in events with Admissions, speaking with prospective students and their families. She is a
dedicated employee of UTSA, serving on many different committees and participating in various student activities and events. Alegra is upbeat, outgoing, and optimistic. Her personal philosophy in working with students is not to dwell on the past, but to focus on the present and future. She works hard to help students see that their goals and dreams are achievable but that achieving them takes patience and perseverance. Alegra has a passion for art, science, and traveling. She loves to spend time reading, being outdoors, going to the movies, or spending time with family. Her husband has brought her into the new technology age by giving her an iPod and an iPhone (which she is now eternally grateful for!). The quote she’s most known for is “just smile and wave, boys!” Alegra is excited about the new adventures that lie ahead and is proud to call the Honors College her new home.

She is on the board of directors of PAWS for Service, an organization she represents when she and her dog, Bonnie Marie, visit hospital and nursing home facilities. Hilda also enjoys
reading, swimming, and spending time with her twin sister, Susy. As an undergraduate student, Hilda was a member of the Honors College where she learned to love the staff and appreciate all that they do for the students. Now she is delighted to be a part of that team.
Tammy Truong Work-study Student Assistant
Tammy Truong joins the Honors College staff as a Work-study Student Assistant. She is about to enter her junior year at UTSA. Tammy is majoring in Biology and plans to become a dentist. August 22-29, 2010
It’s 9 am on a Saturday in mid-July and while many Honors students are enjoying their summer break on a beach or poolside, six Honors students are starting to sweat as they build a cowboy-themed can opener out of cans of beans, chili, corn, and tomatoes in Dr. Eisenberg’s garage. The students are practicing the construction of their entry – “UTSA Wrangling Hunger” -- for the San Antonio Canstruction® competition, which will begin at North Star Mall on August 29, 2010. In Canstruction® competitions, teams from architectural, construction, and engineering firms -- and occasionally universities -- compete to design and build giant structures made almost entirely of canned foods. After the event, all of the cans used in the structures – almost 4000 cans for the Honors College team – will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank. The team’s goal is to help local families avoid hunger and create awareness of the global problem of hunger and malnutrition while also showcasing UTSA students’ creativity and commitment to public service. The team -- team leader Harrison Pierce plus Samantha Singel, Albert Franco, Johnmichael Storey, Audra Biediger, and Stephanie Estrada -- has spent the past year designing a structure and working out computer models with assistance from Professor Kevin McClellan of the Department of Architecture. The structure will be available for viewing in the University Center (UC 1.02.22 – across from and to the left of the bookstore) during Roadrunner Days. We encourage all of you to visit! The team has raised funds for almost all of the cans, but is still $700 short of their fund-raising goal. You can help by dropping off a small donation when you visit the display. You can also donate on line at: http://alumni.utsa.edu/canstruction.

Friedrich Wilderness Park sits on the edge of the Texas Hill Country about 20 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio. From downtown, take Interstate Highway 10 west about 1/2 mile past Loop 1604. Take the Dominion Drive exit # 552. Drive approximately 1.5 miles and take the turn-around under the Interstate, then take the second right turn on Milsa. Milsa makes a left turn.
Friedrich Park will be on your right about 600 yards down. For more maps and directions from your location, visit MapQuest.
WILD BExAR WALK Saturday, October 23, 10:00 am @ Friedrich Park
Wild hogs around UTSA? Pumas near Leon Springs? Recognize poison ivy? What is the connection between cedar fever and gin? What did local native tribes do with cactus, sotol, agave? Do you know any plants that act as natural mosquito repellants? Join fellow Honors College students and Honors advisor, Sherry Whitmore, for a free nature hike through Friedrich Wilderness Park. Friedrich Park is a city-owned natural area with plants and animal life typical for the Texas Hill Country. There are also endangered plants, animals, birds, and insects that find refuge there. The varied terrain – some flat, some uphill, some shady, some open – offers great trails for hiking. Just 7 miles north of UTSA Main Campus, close to I-10, Friedrich Park is a 600-acre area dedicated to preservation education, biologi-cal study and recreation. Sherry has a graduate degree in Botany and is a published scholar. She has led walks and field trips at Friedrich Park and other natural areas in this part of Texas and has been on the board of directors of “Friends of Friedrich Park” for 15 years. She knows many of nature’s secrets in this corner of Bexar County and wants to share them with you. Meet at the Friedrich Park parking lot on Saturday, October 23, at 10:00 AM. The hike will last around 2 to 3 hours. There is only room for 25 people so please RSVP to the Honors College (210) 458-4106. Bring water, insect repellant, sun screen, hat, and solid walking shoes or hiking boots (no flip flops). You may want to bring a snack for yourself. Check out the park on its website (http://www.fofriedrichpark.org/).

Have you ever considered spending the semester in Austin during a session of the Legislative session? Have you ever imagined work-ing as an intern in the Texas Legislature and learning about the inner workings of government? The UTSA Legislative Scholars Program, founded and supported by State Representative Ruth Jones McClendon, provides students with the opportunity to serve as a legislative assistant for 140 days in the spring 2011 Session of the Texas Legislature, while earning 12 credit hours at UTSA. The program is administered by the Institute of Law and Public Affairs (ILPA) within the Honors College. A faculty committee recommends a minimum of 5 Legislative Scholars to the ILPA. Legislative Scholars -- who must live in Austin during the spring semester -- each receive a $10,000 award. The full program description and application forms will be avail-able on the ILPA website by the first week of September. Applica-tion requirements include an interest in public policy, a personal statement, and two letters of recommendation. For further information, contact Dr. Richard Gambitta at 210-458-2990.
CARLOS AND MALU ALVAREZ
SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND
Application deadline October 1, 2010
The Honors College is currently soliciting applications from undergraduate students for funding through the UTSA Carlos and Malu Alvarez Special Opportunities Fund. The Special Opportuni-ties fund -- established thanks to a generous donation to the university from Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez -- is designed to allow undergraduate students to engage in special, educational experiences to which they would not normally have access. Examples of such experiences include traveling to a professional conference to present a paper, attending a workshop for special training, or partici-pating in an unpaid internship experience, such as the UT-System Archer Fellows Program. Grants are capped at $750 per student.
Applications are available on the Honors College website at:
For more information, contact Dr. Ann Eisenberg, Associate Dean of the Honors College, at [email protected].

By Jessica Garza I knew one thing for certain when I boarded my plane to Beijing: it was going to be a long flight. It was all the uncertainties about the trip, the country and what I was going to experience that made the trip unforgettable. I could talk about climbing the Great Wall, visiting the Terracotta warriors, and shopping at the silk market, but those are experiences that all tourists have when visiting China. Meeting the youngest Grand Master Chef, having dinner with an Olympic Champion, receiving an authentic Kung Fu sword as a gift and meeting Chinese students made the trip for me not to mention hav-ing two very knowledgeable professors lead our trip. As I prepared for the study abroad trip, I purchased a guidebook and read about the historical sites I would visit, the food I would taste, the cultural customs I would encounter, and how to be prepared for the public restroom facilities. Yes, you read that right: restroom facilities. I didn’t think much about bathrooms prior to the trip, but, in China, the question, “Is it a toilet?,” was a big deal. Something to consider when traveling abroad is being fearless. Not being afraid to try new foods was one of those moments for me. The first full day in Beijing I ate food that I would never have considered eating back home, including duck heart. I was hesitant to try it at first simply because it didn’t look very appetizing, but I’m glad I ate it since it ended up being delicious. The entire trip was amazing, but the part that struck me the most was the ride through the Hudong in Beijing. Seeing the poor neighborhood and the way people lived made me realize how blessed we are in the States. Living in dorm rooms, we complain about our bedrooms being too small or about having to share a bathroom with a roommate. But seeing entire families share a living space only slightly larger than a dorm room and neighborhood bath houses really puts into perspective how lucky we are. If you are considering studying abroad and want an experience that opens your eyes to an entirely dif-ferent way of life, don’t count China out. I almost did and I would have missed out on one of the best experi-ences in my life. Trust me: the long flight is worth it.
