The User Friendly Community 2007 A community that is dedicated to making all of our rooms and procedures User Friendly As of 2007-0614 Slide 2 Suggest we identify some problem areas Classroom Design InstallationCommunicationDocumentationSupplies Other Areas Slide 3 Suggest the following Format Make Observations (problems and opportunities) Agree to Standards (used to evaluate conditions and suggestions) Make Suggestions (how to meet the standards) Slide 4 Examples of Classroom Design Issues Consistent interface Real Time Feedback Laptop Friendly Chalk and Equipment Ventilation Easy access to filter and lamp Slide 5 Classroom Design Slide 6 Glass half empty or half full? We can look at these rooms and see what works well. Try to envision someone using the room Solicit input from all available sources Do not trivialize the work that went into making the room Slide 7 Issue 1: Consistent Interface Observations It can be confusing when an instructor goes from one classroom to another. Similar rooms have different styles of interface Some rooms use buttons in different ways on the same screen Slide 8 Projector is off vs. Turn projector off Slide 9 Slide 10 Consistent Interface Suggested Standard All rooms will have a similar layout (touch and feel). Buttons will be in same order and work the same way (e.g., PC, MAC, Laptop) (e.g., turning system on and off) Agree to four categories of rooms based on functionality needed Slide 11 Consistent Interface Suggestion: Four Categories Remote: use remote to control projector Basic: The bare bones rooms need only buttons {e.g. DB12} Intermediate: Need more functions (e.g., overflow, VTC) {e.g. TPS-4} Advanced: Need even more functions (e.g., recording, multiple images) or are larger rooms {e.g. TPS-12 or larger} Slide 12 Consistent Interface Example Large Screen to go here Slide 13 Real Time Feedback Observations In some rooms there is no indication that projector is warming up or cooling down Even Roomview can indicate the projector is on when it is not. Slide 14 Real Time Feedback: Observation It says projector is off, but it is on Slide 15 Real Time Feedback Suggested Standard Systems will give accurate real time feedback as clearly as possible. - In some old rooms it will be possible to add real time feedback simply by re- programming -In some old rooms it may be necessary to do more Slide 16 Real Time Feedback Suggestion Option 1 System information button goes here. Slide 17 Real Time Feedback Suggestion Option 2 COC and THN option goes here. Slide 18 Laptop Friendly rooms Laptop Area Cable accessibility Slide 19 Chalk and Equipment Observation Observation: In some rooms equipment is too close to chalk boards so that monitors and keyboards get covered with chalk dust soon after being cleaned Slide 20 Chalk and Equipment Suggested Standard: PC and other equipment will be away from chalk dust producing black boards Where necessary, barriers will be placed between black boards and equipment Where feasible, all equipment (e.g., PC, switch, DVD) will be enclosed inside a cart or other container Slide 21 Chalk and Equipment Suggestion When rooms are designed see if we can place equipment or make some kind of barrier that will protect them from chalk dust Look at the old rooms that are problems to see if we can move equipment or make some kind of barrier (e.g., CLK, OLS) Slide 22 Ventilation Observations Some racks do not provide adequate ventilation (e.g., CHM 402, THN 115) This can cause equipment to over heat and harmful to users This can cause equipment to fail sooner than it should Some users have complained about how hot it is around equipment (e.g., THN 223) Slide 23 Ventilation Observations Pictures will go here. Slide 24 Ventilation Proposed Standard: Equipment should be placed in a rack with adequate ventilation Slide 25 Ventilation Suggestions Some of the boxes around projectors and other equipment could provide better ventilation if solid wood was replaced with screening (e.g., THN) Some racks could provide better ventilation if there were more space or a larger fan (e.g., CHM 402) Some fans may need to be serviced Slide 26 Easy access to filter and lamp Observations In some rooms it is necessary to remove projector in order to change lamp or clean filter This could be avoided by moving the mounting bracket or putting a hole in the wall Slide 27 Easy access to filter and lamp Proposed Standard: Projector should be mounted in such a way that it will be possible to clean filter and change lamp without removing projector from mount
