The Usage of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) in Building

There are various using for TES in building for air conditioning, disaster resistant and other various

usage. In this present time, water TES has been developing since 60 years ago in Japan and now the

technology reaches its high performance. The other technology for are Ice TES and phase change

material (PCM) test for space cooling are still under research. Nakanoshima 2, Osaka Festival Tower

is using TES for its cooling and heating system. District heating and cooling (DHC) are installed on the

basement to support the offices, companies and other facilities in this complex building. It has no

cooling tower, therefore the Dojima River supply water as heat source for cooling and heating. The

turbo chiller converts the water onto chilled water and send it to the building. The water dispose to

the chilled water tank. The heat exchanger is used to produce warm water to supply to the building.

It considers energy saving system for special case. The Tosabori river receive the dispose water from

the supply system. Warm water charge, discharge and also chilled water charge and discharge are also

being considered when design the diffuser and piping in TES tank. The CFO analysis was conducted

for studying the effect on temperature profile in change of flow rate into tank in the limit of time.

The other example of TES technology is applied on Head Office of Kansai Electric Power Company in

Nakanoshima. They are using Ice TES for the district cooling plant. Slurry ice is made by screw heat

pumps settled on the basement floor of head office building. The rotating bridge are used to get the

raw ice. The machine room consists of ice maker machine and ice tank for cooling system in the

building. Basically both ice TES and water TES in Nakanoshima building are using river water as a heat

source for space cooling and heating.

The Nakanoshima building have efficient equipment’s called heat pump that can be used in space

cooling and heating similar to the air conditioning. This type of heat pump release heat as sensible

heat from outdoor machine in lower cost and can be used for cooling and heating. The building has

no cooling tower which usually collected heat from room and obtains heat through chiller and its

temperature rises.

The most interest fact is the ice TES system can be used to reduce the energy consumption for air

conditioning system in the building. Thermal energy storage is like a battery for a building’s air-

conditioning system. It uses standard cooling equipment, plus an energy storage tank to shift all or a

portion of a building’s cooling needs to off-peak. During off-peak hours, ice is made and stored inside

the storage tanks. Because the energy consumption for cooling system is becoming large recently. So

we have to design building s of lower cooling and heating for energy saving. Especially in summer,

energy used in chiller, fan and pump is so huge. It is necessary to have efficient technology with high

efficiency and low cost.
