•The 2 kidneys receive between 1100 – 2000 liters (upwards of 500 gallons) of blood per day…about the volume of a car!
•But… the human body only holds about 5.6 liters of blood.
•Therefore… your blood travels through the kidneys to be cleaned about once every 4 minutes
1.Help rid wastes from the blood• Urea: main nitrogenous (N2) containing
compound• Toxins: drugs
2.Regulate the volume and chemical makeup of blood
• Maintain a good blood pressure• Proper ions (Na, K, Cl, bicarbonate)• Proper pH
3.Release hormones• Renin: helps regulate blood pressure
• Erythropoietin: stimulates production of red blood cells (RBCs)
• Converts Vitamin D to its active form
On the outside:•Maroon/brown
•Covered with a shiny capsule, then surrounded by fat capsule (protection)
•5 inches long, 3.5 inches wide, 1 inch thick (large bar of soap)
•Indentation on one side (renal hilus) containing:•Renal artery•Renal vein•Ureter
On the inside:•Cortex: outer layer, “rind”
•Renal pyramid: made up of medulla
•Renal lobe:
