We are pleased to announce that the Ontario Association of Community
Futures Development Corporations has officially changed its operating name
to Community Futures Ontario with the French name being
Développement des collectivités Ontario.
The change was introduced at the 2016 Conference. The name change
highlights the strength of this national program which is being delivered by
268 Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) offices for more
than 30 years.
Nationally we are seeing a shift spearheaded by provincial Community Futures
Associations working with their offices to adopt a standardized brand. This
includes a new look and logo as well as standardized naming convention.
Similar changes have already occurred in Ontario including Community
Futures Peterborough and Community Futures Ontario East.
The initiative was led by the our Public Relations Committee which recognized that
97% of all Ontario offices were displaying the common identifier “triangle” logo but
that only 44% of offices used the words “Community Futures” in their names.
Research conducted at the end of 2015 demonstrated that members recognized that
having a standardized name format and look would allow for improved brand
recognition marketing of the program and their services. Several other CFDC offices
have already changed over to the new format and more are currently in the process.
The website address is now www.cfontario.com . Over the next few months we will
be making changes to our website, social media platforms and email address formats.

Note the stylish “Kenora Dinner Jacket” being proudly worn by Fred Wright, Chair of LOWBIC in the middle photo! We thank all of the LOWBIC team for their hospitality and tremendous assistance with the entire conference.

Awards night: We have Winners!
Entrepreneur of the Year Winner
Kevin Bossy and Mike Roberts of Bishop Water Technologies, of Renfrew, nominated by the Renfrew County CFDC, were the winners of the 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Bishop Water Technologies is a leader in clean-tech waste management specializing in sludge and slurry management for municipalities and industries including food production, pulp and paper, mining and agriculture and aquaculture.
Change is constant and with today's technology change is happening more rapidly than ever; however this has not been the case with the wastewater industry. Controlling the power of water is a daunting task, but that’s exactly what Bishop Water Technologies is doing using Geotube® technology.
The ability of Bishop Water Technologies to modify the waste treatment flow within an existing footprint rather than the need for a new facility allows municipality or the business to achieve higher levels of treatment at a lower cost.

On hand for the awards ceremonies were Mike Thompson, Diane McKinnon of the Renfrew County CFDC; Kevin Bossy and Mike Roberts of Bishop Water Technologies; Paul Curtic and Darrel Ryan of the Renfrew County CFDC.

The Win This Space competition is an initiative providing an opportunity for new businesses to win free storefront space, in either Seaforth or Brussels, Ontario for one year courtesy of Huron East Economic Development the County of Huron, County of Seaforth/Brussels Community Development Trusts and Seaforth BIA. This program was the first of its kind in Huron County and only the second in the entire province. Five finalists were selected and presented their business plans in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ like forum where judges selected the final winner.
All finalists were offered varying lengths of business management counselling provided by the Huron Business Development Corporation at no cost (whether they chose to continue with their business start-up or not) with the winning business receiving an entire year of business mentorship provided by the CFDC.
In total 9 new businesses opened as a result of this contest. Accepting the award was Jan Hawley (Win This Space) and Maureen Agar (Huron BDC)

Innovation Award of Excellence Winner
Receiving the Innovation Award of Excellence was the Head Start In Business Program nominated by the North Claybelt CFDC. The Head Start In Business program was the brainchild of the North Claybelt CFDC.
What began as a pilot project in 2001 to help youth at risk evolved into a series of nine programs designed to encourage young people between the ages of 5 and 34 to explore and develop entrepreneurial skills. The programming covers a continuum of age-appropriate material that helps participants envision entrepreneurship as a viable career option in Northern Ontario. So far HSIB has exposed over 20,000 Anglophone, Francophone and First Nations youth to entrepreneurship in their respective communities or schools. This project has collaborated with all 24 Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDC) in Northern Ontario.

Welcome
On behalf of the Board of Directors, Community Futures Peterborough, Chair Kim Appleton is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeff Day as the organization's Executive Director, effective October 3, 2016.
Jeff has extensive business development experience in both the automotive and aerospace sectors, and started from the ground up as a tool and die-maker. His most recent position was as a global business turn-around specialist.
Jeff’s appointment is the result of an extensive search and hiring process the Board’s recruitment committee conducted in the spring and summer. The Board felt Jeff’s broad experience; mindset and business acumen would be assets to the Executive Director role.
"The Board and I are really looking forward to the new vision and energy Jeff will bring to our organization,” says Appleton. “His outgoing personality and easy nature will provide our staff with a great atmosphere in which to thrive, and it won't be long before Jeff has assimilated himself into the local economic development community."
Jeff also has deep roots in, and a strong commitment to, the local community. He has been a resident of Peterborough County since his family moved here when he was a young boy. He has volunteered as a youth soccer and hockey coach and ski instructor. Jeff is married to Susan, a health professional, and has three children. Jeff's proven experience as a team builder and leader complement his nature to challenge the status quo.
CONGRATULATIONS!

Operational Cost Survey- REMINDER
Please take the time to fill in this important survey. In conjunction with the Community Futures Network of Canada (CFNC), we are once again conducting an Operational Cost Survey of all of our members. The survey link was emailed to all managers on August 11, 2016. This is being done across Canada in an effort to demonstrate the real cost of delivering all contractually-mandated core services of the CF program. The CFNC recognizes the importance of these advocacy efforts to try to obtain sufficient funding to deliver our federally-contracted services. Most of you recently participated in our annual salary survey and to protect the anonymity of that information, we have asked our webmaster to collate the results to produce averages for the 4 regions rather than asking you to provide it again. We will be integrating this information into the final operating costs report. If you have not received your survey link, please contact us at [email protected] and we would be happy to resend you the information.

Join EDCO’s Advanced Manufacturing Network!
This is your opportunity to join EDCO’s Advanced Manufacturing Network. Launched earlier this summer by several Ontario communities, this exciting initiative will allow Network members to collaborate and share vital information about the diverse manufacturing sector that contributes significantly to the overall Provincial economy. This Network focuses on research and the development of key tools and activities that will support economic developers in their business retention and expansion as well as investment attraction strategies that target the manufacturing sector.
The Network is already well underway on its first research project – Asset Mapping for the Manufacturing Sector. The mapping, or inventorying of all the assets; tracking the supply-chains within the sub-sectors; determining the “gaps”; identifying strengths as well as synergies within the participating communities and regions – All of this research is a crucial first step and will become the platform to support the economic development activities of the participating communities/regions as well as the overall Network.
To date, nine communities/regions have come together to form this Network and welcome further participation from across the Province. There is a cost to participate; however, it will depend on your level of engagement in the Asset Mapping Research Project. There is also a yearly commitment to ensure the sustainability of this research as well as future activities determined by EDCO’s Advanced Manufacturing Network. For more information, please contact the EDCO office at [email protected]
