The opportunity to leave your life and join another – even if it is only for a few hours – is one of the great gifts offered by live theatre. Travel back in time to the turn of the nineteenth century, or fall into a fairy tale, visit a far away land or take revenge on your boss; let our extraordinary young theatre artists provide a welcome escape during our 2013-2014 season.

This coming year we will bring you some amazing new work that has taken the NY theatre scene by storm. Bengal Tiger and Seven bring us face to face with events from across the globe that are shaping our world.

Come share some glorious history – helping to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice in a clever adaptation of this great novel. Spend some time in old New York and share the epic sweep of the gorgeous musical Ragtime.

If you are feeling feisty, you can enter the world of shady real estate, joining David Mamet’s salesmen in Glengarry Glen Ross. For a bit of extra fun, you can have a backstage romp with the stage folks of Noises Off. Or, you can fulfill your workday fantasies and join the ladies of 9 to 5 while they get even with their boss.

Or if you wish the ultimate escape, the commedia characters and amazing puppets who people the world of King Stag will transport you to their land of lovers and princes, magicians and wild birds in a glorious fairy tale for all ages.

Finally, I want to share some very exciting news. Our guest for Late Night Broadway will be Lillias White. This Tony and Emmy award-winning actress has been in eight Broadway musicals and will bring her extraordinary voice from NYC to Kalamazoo. If you’re not familiar with her work, do yourself a favor and check out our playlist on YouTube via our website -- then hurry and get your tickets before this show sells out!

Got a lot going on? Got a lot on your mind? Stuck in the same-old, same-old? Take a break – travel, laugh, sigh, sing, weep, swoon – lose yourself in the theatre. Join us for an extraordinary adventure.

See you soon in London, Baghdad, New York or the land of make believe,

Joan Herrington, ChairDepartment of Theatre

The University Theatre kicks off the 2013-2014 season with the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet. Four cynical real estate agents get lost in a dog-eat-dog world where lying and cheating become the triumph of 21st century selling tactics. With cutthroat competition and high stakes jobs on the line, these salesmen will stop at nothing to seal the deal. Don’t miss this scathingly funny and powerful play that the Daily News says “…can grab you by the throat and punch you in the gut.”

“who needs caffeine when you’ve got Glengarry Glen Ross?”

Put the day’s events behind you and come lose yourself in laughter with the outrageously funny Noises Off. A zealous director and his hilarious team bring us a play within a play and a side-splitting journey of onstage catastrophe and crazy backstage antics. The New York Times calls Noises Off “The most dexterously realized comedy ever about putting on a comedy. A spectacularly funny, peerless backstage farce. This dizzy, well-known romp is a festival of delirium.”

“Noises Off is one of the flat-out funniest comedies of our time, or anybody’s time.”

This three-time Tony Award-winning musical, Ragtime (which featured WMU Alumni Marin Mazzie), is an epic and nostalgic tale that paints a powerful portrait of American life during the turn of the 20th century. Based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow, this uplifting musical journey portrays a young America in its quest for freedom. Time Magazine calls Ragtime “a triumph for the stage!”

Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo was praised by the Los Angeles Times as “the most original play about the Iraq war.” This unique and surprisingly funny story follows a foul-mouthed tiger who gets lost in the streets of present day Baghdad searching for the meaning of life and war. A Pulitzer Prize finalist and a Broadway hit, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo is a haunting look at the aftermath of present day violence and the absurdities of war.

King Stag is a magically funny fable in which men transform into creatures and creatures transform into men. Through a sophisticated blend of live actors and puppets created and directed by guest artists from the Puppet Kitchen in NYC and Handspring (creators of War Horse) in South Africa, King Stag will challenge the boundaries of imagination and contemporary creativity. Transport the whole family into this world of powerful magicians, heart-sick lovers, whimsical servants, and a giant bear—all in pursuit of true love.
