Increasing AccessOne thousand and six (1006) or 7% of the 14,486students enrolled in Academic Year 2004-05 were fromCaribbean territories outside of Jamaica (vide AppendixIV), though this represents a 17% increase over theprevious year. Not surprisingly, the majority of theCampus’ registrants, 10,555 or 73 %, were females.

The enrolment figures for first degree programmescontinue to increase significantly since 2000, thelargest increase being evident in the reporting year whenregistrants in first degree programmes rose by 8% overthe previous year.

Consistent with the strategic direction of the Campus, there continues to be a decline in registration forcertificate and diploma programmes.

Postgraduate EnrolmentAn analysis of the postgraduate enrolment by programmeat the University of the West Indies, Mona Campusshowed that there were notable increases in registrationover the five-year period beginning 2000-01.

Enrolment in M.Phil programmes increased until 2004-05when there was a 10% decline in registration over theprevious year. Registration in Phd. Programmes, on theother hand, increased for every academic year for thepast five years. Total enrolment continues to increase forpostgraduate programmes from 1929 at the beginning ofthe five year period to 2942 by 2005. There has been, therefore, an increase in the number of persons enrolledin postgraduate research programmes up until theacademic year 2004-2005 when there was a slightdecline of about 1%. Enrolment in taught programmeshas continued on an increasing trend. The 20% target, established in the UWI Strategic Plan, of graduateenrolment to total enrolment has been achieved and theCampus must now address the resource needscontingent on this enlarged graduate population.

Recruitment StrategiesThe Admissions Section of the Registry continues torecruit students from feeder institutions through schoolvisits in and outside of Jamaica, and through campusevents to which potential students are invited. Ofparticular note was the hosting by the Faculties of Pure &Applied and Medical Sciences, in collaboration withGenerating Genius, of a London group headed by Dr. TonySewell, of 10 Jamaican and 10 British boys of WestIndian descent. The boys were afforded exposure touniversity level experiences in science and medicine inorder to stimulate them to consider seriously a career inmedicine or biomedical research. The programme willcontinue for successive summers.
