I am delighted to welcome you to the 5th Research Showcase here at The University of Nottingham. The Showcase provides the opportunity for members of the public to meet with world-leading researchers of the future, to hear about their research and question them about what it means for society. At the same time, the researchers get a chance to improve their communication skills and engage with the wider public. The University is committed to involving the public with its research and it supports several national public engagement initiatives.
The research staff and doctoral students you meet today have been selected through a competitive process. They will present posters about the research they are undertaking at The University of Nottingham and explain its real world implications to you. The finalists come from a wide range of academic disciplines and they will be talking to you about a broad range of subjects from teenage behaviour in dogs to forgotten ageing mothers in India and from fightingtuberculosis to 3D printing.
The participants also represent a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures and we are delighted to include the winner of the Malaysia Campus. We believe that this international perspective and diversity is one of the many characteristics that makes The University of Nottingham a popular and stimulating research environment, a truly global university.
Today’s judging panel is made up of members of the public, non-academic University staff and representatives from some of the major UK research funders. As a showcase visitor, I would also like to invite you to nominate your favourite poster from those on display today.
We are delighted to welcome Simon Singh, bestselling author and award-winning documentary director, to deliver the keynote address and award the prizes after the judging is complete.
I hope that you enjoy the Research Showcase.
Professor Jerry Roberts Assistant PVC Research
Welcome to The University of Nottingham Research Showcase 2014

As a leading, research-intensive institution, The University of Nottingham believes that postgraduates and early career research staff are central to our research mission. For this reason the University has made significant investment in its Graduate School. This includes the provision of training opportunities and support, as well as workshops and events, to enhance the postgraduate and researcher experience and assist our students and staff to develop a range of skills that help their career opportunities. Similar facilities are available at our campuses in China and Malaysia.
This event enables us to showcase the outputs of that investment. The breadth and originality of the research undertaken by our postgraduates and staff is relevant and potentially world-changing. The skills they have developed in communicating their often highly complex and technical research to a non-expert audience will be of great importance to them in their careers.
We are very proud of them and delighted that you are able to contribute to the success of this event and learn more about the fascinating work of our students and staff.

Best selling author and award-winningdocumentary director, Simon Singh is an acclaimed keynote speaker on science and mathematics.
Simon’s parents emigrated from the Punjab in India to Britain in 1950. He grew up in Somerset, and studied physics at ImperialCollege London, before completing a PhD in particle physics at Cambridge University and at CERN, Geneva.
In 1990 he joined the BBC’s Science Department, where he was a producer and director of programmes such as Tomorrow’s World and Horizon. In 1996 he directed Fermat’s Last Theorem, a BAFTA award winning documentary about the world’s most notorious mathematical problem. The documentary was also aired in America as part of the NOVA series. The Proof, as it was re-titled, was nominated for an Emmy award.
The story of this notorious mathematical problem was also the subject of Simon’s first book, Fermat’s Last Theorem. This was the first book about mathematics to become a No.1 bestseller in the UK. In America the book was called Fermat’s Enigma.
In 1997 Simon began working on his second book, The Code Book, a history of codes and codebreaking. As well as explaining the science of codes and describing the impact of codebreaking on history, the book shows that cryptography is more important today than ever before.
The Code Book has resulted in a return to television for Simon. He presented The Science of Secrecy, a five-part series forChannel 4. His third book was Big Bang, a history of cosmology, and this fourth book was Trick or Treatment?, an investigation of alternative medicine, co-authored by Professor Edzard Ernst. This led to the British Chiropractic Association suing Simon for libel. After successfully defending his writing, Simon was a leading figure in the Libel Reform Campaign, which led to the 2013 Defamation Act. His most recent book is The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets, which reveals how mathematicians on the show’s writing team have hidden various equations in the world’s most successful TV show.
