UI FOUNDATION The Basics

The UI Foundation exists solely to provide support for the university. We are the preferred channel for private contributions to the University of Iowa.

A nonprofit IRC Sec. 501(c)(3) organization

We fundraise according to priorities set by the university.

Organized in 1956 to help the university meet needs beyond those provided for by state support, and to reach new levels of distinction by generating significant private gift support

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a F o u n d a t i o n

The university’s comprehensive $1.7 billion fundraising initiative

2008-2016 Progress: $1.5 billion (7/2/2015)

▪ 88% of goal

▪ 82% of timeline

28.3% of current UI fac/staff have made a gift to the campaign!

The future of Phil

After concludes, WE ARE PHIL

will live on as our annual giving program for UI faculty and staff.

2016

During the comprehensive campaign (from now through the end of 2016), any gift to any fund at the UIF counts as both a campaign gift and as your participation in the WE ARE PHIL Faculty/Staff Giving Program.

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a F o u n d a t i o n

WE ARE PHIL: Goals

Raise awareness of impact and importance of philanthropy at the UI

Make faculty/staff giving a growing and positive part of campus culture

Increase the number of faculty and staff who make annual gifts to support the UI

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a F o u n d a t i o n

Why is faculty and staff giving so important?

Our contributions benefit: Students Our community The state of Iowa The world Ourselves / Each other

But it’s not only about the money…

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a F o u n d a t i o n

Why is faculty and staff giving important?

Faculty and staff investment in the UI sends a powerful message to those outside the university:

We are fully invested in the work we do. By supporting the UI ourselves, we tell others that it is worthy of their support.

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a F o u n d a t i o n

Why do faculty/staff volunteers matter?

You: Help articulate the UI’s need for

philanthropic support – as well as its positive impact.

Lend credibility, showing that We Are Phil is endorsed by faculty/staff.

Inject energy, creativity, and enthusiasm into the program and customize it for your area.

Set an example through your own philanthropy.

Build meaningful relationships between the UI Foundation and the university.

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a F o u n d a t i o n

Why do we need faculty/staff volunteers?

Of all the We Are Phil things we do, YOUR events, emails, and other peer-to-peer encouragement is what’s really meaningful and effective.

THANK YOU!

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a F o u n d a t i o n

Volunteers’ To-Do List

Assemble your own We Are Phil committee to help brainstorm and plan.

Set a participation goal for your work unit. (Foundation staff will assist with a baseline.)

Communicate often with co-workers: inform them of goals, progress, where to find forms, events you’ve planned, ways co-workers can help, giving or impact stories from within your area.

T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f I o w a F o u n d a t i o n

Volunteers’ To-Do List

Plan events, activities, and/or communications to increase awareness and participation among your coworkers.

Confirm that your colleagues received their We Are Phil materials (via Campus Mail).
