We are very excited to have each Greek chapter participate in teams again this year. This is a great way to strengthen our Greek community even further. Just like last year, teams will consist of members from PHC, IFC, and NPHC chapters. Once all packets are received, we will be able to make up a total of five teams. Once given a team, it is your responsibility to communicate effectively with the other chapters on your team as they will be the people you are competing with all week.

This year, each chapter will assign a Point of Contact to receive all of the Greek Week information. This person must be available for a meeting on Monday, September 19th, 2011 at 5:30pm in Student Union Room 312. The Point of Contact is able to participate with his or her chapter during Greek Week. However, during the meeting one Point of Contact person from each team will need become a part of the Greek Week Committee. They will help facilitate events throughout Greek Week and will not participate with their individual chapter.

We hope that you will be able to make new friends to last throughout your years here as a member of the Greek community and beyond. Greek Week isn’t just about showing off your spirit for your chapter, but to show the spirit for the entire Greek community. This year we want to show the entire university that being a member of the Greek community is truly a treasurable experience.

All forms are located at the end of this packet and they are due to the CSL Administration Desk by Friday, September 9th at 12pm, this includes t-shirts and money (pages 24-33). General Rules1.) A set amount of points will be awarded to each team for every place that

they achieve.2.) All participants for every event need to be an active member or new

member for their chapter and must have a signed waiver. All participants must have their student ID with them at all times.

3.) The Greek Week Committee and the Office of Greek Life Programs Staff reserve the right to disqualify any individual, group, chapter, or group of chapters at any time prior to, during, or after Greek Week for unsportsmanlike conduct, or behavior unbecoming of a member of our Greek community.

4.) Only one (1) representative from each team may approach the Greek Week Committee members concerning a ruling decision. More than one (1) person approaching the Greek Week Committee will be considered as grounds for complete Disqualification from that event, and an automatic 5 points deduction will be taken from their overall score.

5.) There is to be NO alcohol, or representation of alcohol permitted at any event, at any time. Please refer to the Greek Week Alcohol Policy for more information.

6.) If any member or members of a team are cheating or violating the rules pertaining to each individual event, the entire team will be disqualified from that event.

7.) Points will be awarded as outlined in this packet. The team that has accumulated the highest amount of points shall be declared the Greek Week Champions. There will be a scoreboard located in the Student Union at all times with updated points for each chapter to see.

8.) Greek Week Co-Chairs hold all right to amend this packet as they see fit at any particular time.

9.) Remember that as a community we are united, let’s have fun and show the rest of the university what a great group of peers we are.

Greek Week Code of ConductAs participating members of Greek Week 2011, we will uphold and promote the ideas for which Greek Week stands. We will conduct ourselves with dignity and be well mannered at all times, keeping in mind that our actions directly reflect upon Greek Week and the Greek community as a whole.

The Greek Week Committee will hold teams responsible for adherence to the following basic expectations:

1.) Teams will refrain from using language that is disrespectful or otherwise in bad taste2.) Team performances will demonstrate good taste in dress and movement3.) Teams will respect their own property and the property of others, and will not condone nor

tolerate the abuse of property 4.) Teams will exhibit good sportsmanship at all times5.) Each participating member will keep in mind that the overall objective of Greek Week is to

bring the Greek community together

ALCOHOL POLICY

In accordance with the federal, state, and local laws and policies set by the University of Akron, the IFC, PHC, and NPHC Judicial Boards, and FIPG guidelines: ALL Greek Week events will be ALCOHOL FREE (dry). This policy begins midnight September 23rd, 2011 and will extend through midnight September 30th, 2011.

Any violation of this will be handled as follows:

1.) Any individual found to be in possession of alcohol and is approached by a member of the Greek Week Committee, Office of Greek Life Programming, or University of Akron Police Department (UAPD) will be asked to dump out any opened alcohol containers, and that person will be documented and held accountable

2.) Anyone escorted from an event will not be allowed to participate in any further Greek Week competitions and their chapter may face a complete disqualification from Greek Week

Greek Week will not tolerate or condone the use of illegal drugs or alcohol at any event. If there are any questions or confusion about what this entails please feel free to contact one of the Greek Week Chairs for further explanation. Each participating chapter will be held responsible and accountable for upholding the Greek Week Code of Conduct, the rules set forth by Department of Student Life, UAPD, IFC, PHC, NPHC as well as all guidelines that the University of Akron has us comply with.

Surrender Your Treasure

Treasure Chests due: Friday September 23rd, 2011 by 12:00 PM to the CSL Administration Desk

Event Starts: Monday, September 26th, 2011 at 9:00 AM

Event Ends: Friday, September 30th, 2011 at 12:00 PM

Event Specifics: Each team will be given a treasure chest to decorate and put money into.

Each team will have a chest that sits out on a table in the Student Union. By people’s donations in each team’s jug we will count up the money.

Event Rules:

1.) Each team will be given a treasure chest to decorate from the Greek Week Committee at the meeting with the Greek Week Point of Contacts.

2.) The jugs are unified, meaning the jug is the same size for every chapter. You must use the jug provided for you.

3.) You are more than welcome to decorate your chest as your team sees fit. There are to be no decorations on the opening of the jug preventing coins to fit.

4.) Team name must be on the juga. Not just one chapter name, or Greek letters

5.) No one is to touch, move, or vandalize another member’s jug. Proof of this action results in automatic disqualification of your chapter from this event.

* All money collected will be used to fund our Adopt-A-Platoon efforts for a full calendar year

Pirate Ship Flags

Due: Wednesday, September 21st, 2011 by 12:00 PM to the CSL Administration Desk

Event Explanation: Each chapter will prepare and present a banner that portrays their Greek/team spirit.

Event Specifics: Each chapter will be given a piece of cloth that will be used for their banner. These banners will be displayed in the Student Union throughout the week to show your chapter/team’s pride and hard work. The Banner must include each chapter’s letters and must incorporate the Greek Week Theme.

Event Rules: 1. Banners must include:

a. Greek Week Themeb. Greek Week Datesc. Team Named. Only Your Chapter Letters

2. NO nudity, obscenity, portrayal of violence, alcohol, or drug references.3. Banners must display Greek Spirit

*Any violation of the above statements will result in a disqualification from the event.

Event Scoring: This is an individual event,; the team with the chapter that wins the best overall banner will be declared the winner and earn 100 points towards their Greek Week score.

Location: Spirit Rock in front of Student Union

Event Specifics: Each team will be assigned a time to paint the rock. Each team is responsible for getting a camera to take a picture of the rock and turn it into the CSL Administration Desk. The picture will only be accepted in an envelope that is addressed: Attention: Greek Week Rock Painting- (your team’s name)

Event rules:

1. Teams must paint the rock during their given time only. Painting the rock before or after the designated time will result in a disqualification of the Team for this specific event.

2. Teams must turn in a picture for the final project to be scored; otherwise no points will be awarded for participation.

3. Teams must use appropriate behavior while painting the rock. Also, the rock must be painted in good taste, as it is in the middle of campus and it will not only reflect your team but the entire Greek community. The design must also incorporate the Greek Week theme.

4. ONLY the team name is to be put on the rock. No individual chapter letters or names.

Event scoring: This is a team event, where one team will be chosen as a winner.

Rain Schedule: If there is rain during the entire period of your teams scheduled time, you may paint the rock at any time AFTER 12pm on Thursday, September 29th, 2011. You must still adhere to the deadline set. If there are any issues, the Greek Week Co-Chairs will resolve them immediately and contact the Point of Contact for your chapter.

Fear the Kang-“ Arrrggh” -Roo

Event date and time: Saturday, September 24th, 2011, Tailgate at 11am; Game at 2pm

Check-in: Check-in will begin when the gates open to Infocision Stadium, approximately 30 minutes before the start of the game (1:30pm). All participants must be checked in before the end of the first quarter.

Locations: Zipfest Tailgating Area and Infocision Stadium

Event Specifics: This year we will be kicking off Greek Week while supporting the Akron Zips Football Team while they play the VMI Keydets! VMI’s mascot is also a kangaroo, so this event will help support our football team in making sure the best kang-“arrrggh”-roo wins! The event will begin with lunch at a designated tent in the Zipfest Tailgating Area and move to Infocision Stadium at the start of the game. Once inside the stadium, a table will be set up near the student section for check-in. Once students are checked in, there will be designated seating areas for the Greek Week Teams to sit. Points will be given based off of attendance and the banner competition. Additional points will be given to members who are wearing the “Greek is Good.” Greek unity shirt.

Best Kangaroo Costume Contest: During the tailgating portion of this event, there will be a costume contest for the best kangaroo outfit.

Members must display good taste when creating their costumes There will be absolutely NO nudity, obscenity, portrayal of violence, alcohol, or drug

Blackbeard’s Battle of the Greeks

Event date and time: Sunday, September 25, 2011, 12:30pm for Pool Sharks; 1pm all other events

Check-in: 11:30am for Pool Sharks; 12:30 for all other events

Locations: The Recreation and Wellness Center, Student Union Game Room

Your chapter must arrive and be checked in by 12:45 PM otherwise you will not be able to participate

Event Specifics: Events will consist of mainly physical abilities, and some will test the teams ability to maintain composure under pressure, speed, and brutal strength. There will be 5 separate events that members can participate in.

Each chapter will select participating members as well as alternates for each event. Alternates will be needed in the case your Greek Week Team is short a member(s) they will be able to participate. There is no guarantee alternates will play.

Pool Sharks Each chapter will have up to two member participate on their Greek Week Team This event will take place in the Student Union Game Room and will begin at

12:30pm. Check in for this event will be at 11:30am. The team member MUST be checked in

by 12pm to participate. This will be a billiards competition ran by the employees in the Game Room. The rules for this event are attached at the end of the packet.

Pirate Tug-of-War Each chapter will have up two members participate on their Greek Week Team Each Greek Week Team will have 8 participants

Walk the Plank Each chapter will have up to two members participate on their Greek Week Team Each Greek Week Team will have 8 participants The contestant will balance a ping pong ball on a spoon clenched in their teeth with

their hands behind their back and “walk the plank”. This will be conducted as a relay with the other participating members of the Greek

Week Team. The team with the best time will be declared the winner.

Cannonball Each chapter will have up three members participate on their Greek Week Team Each Greek Week Team will have 12 participants Cannonball (dodgeball) will be played in brackets as determined by the Greek Week

Team. Brackets will be given the day of the event.

“X” Marks the Spot Each chapter will have up to one member participate on their Greek Week Team Each Greek Week Team will have 4 participants There will be a small pool filled with sand with golden coins hidden within. There will be five rounds lasting 60 seconds. During each round, one member from

each team will have to dig for the gold coins. Individually, coin by coin, the member will have to run them to their team treasure chest while high fiving the four other participating members

The team with the most coins at the end of the fifth round will be declared the winner. If needed, a tie breaker round will occur with the same rules.

Event Scoring: Points will be given out to Greek Week Teams based on the percentage of people that show up to the event for that team:

Event Specifics: A bottom line point value of 25 points will be given out to every team if at least one person from every chapter in that team is present for this event. Then points will be given out to Greek Week Teams based on the percentage of people that show up to the event for that team.

Is your fraternity or sorority held back by chapters and members who don’t get it, or who just don’t care? Do you have members who are there for the wrong reasons?

Well, it’s time to drag them, push them, fine them, beg them or dare them to attend David Stollman’s keynote.

Too often, good leaders and good chapters are not able to succeed because they are too busy cleaning up after the ones that don’t get it. Fixing their problems or fighting their negative image? Imagine how much more we could accomplish if they were part of the solution instead of part of the problem. David will say what you wish you could. Let him confront them in his funny, interactive and moving style. His message will inspire those that want to care about the core values of Fraternity and Sorority Life—friendship, service, leadership and scholarship. He will challenge your members to embrace the best and get rid of the rest. It will touch on topics that range across all major issues facing today’s members.

David has been an active volunteer of his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, since 1995 but now spends his time as an advisor for the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority at New York University. He started off teaching recruitment and developed the Recruitment Boot Camp program that has helped thousands of fraternity and sorority chapters recruit more high quality members. David is also the co-founder of CAMPUSPEAK and for over 15 years fraternity and sorority communities have turned to him to inject some backbone into their membership standards.

Event Specifics: This year we will be providing service opportunities for members to participate in.

First, our Greek Life community will be adopting a platoon stationed overseas to send care packages and letters to each month for an entire year. We will have three events that will pertain to our platoon adoption. Second, we will begin a Greek effort to Beautify Akron.

AdoptaPlatoon

Collection of Items: Student Union Room 335, 10am-12pm

At this time, all items collected by the individual chapters should be brought in. Points are outlined on the next page, and a total of 70 points can be accumulated for the donation of items. Please remember, we need a variety of items and will be sending them out over the course of a year. There is a strict list of things that are not accepted so please make sure to not include any of these, as they will not count for points and will not be able to be used.

Letter Writing: Student Union Room 335, 12pm-1pm

Students may come in freely at the allotted time slot to write letters for the troops. These letters will be sent out monthly with the packages. Examples will be provided for any member who wishes to come and write letters. Points are as outlined on the next pages.

Package Assembling: Student Union Room 335, 1pm-3pm

One to two students from each chapter will be provided with all of the letters, items, and boxes and will be putting them together to be mailed out. Points are as outlined on the next page.

Beautify Akron

Each chapter will select participants for a campus wide trash pick-up. Once checked in, materials will be provided to each member and they will go out to assigned parts of campus and the surrounding neighborhood. Points are as outlined on the next pages.

Beautify Akron Event:

For every team that has at least one member from each chapter attend will receive 5 points. The rest of the points will be based off of the three highest attendance percentages of the total teams.

Pirate Gods 2011

Start Date and Time: Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 at 7pm

Event Location: Student Union Ballrooms

Check In Time: 6pm for participants; 6:30pm for all other members

Event Specifics: Each buccaneer will participate in four rounds: talent, interview, evening wear, and plank walk. Contestants should be prepared to perform a talent, have an appropriate pirate costume for the plank walk along with evening wear for the question and answer portion of the pageant. All attire and performances must be approved by the committee the night of dress rehearsal.

Dress Rehearsal: Participates will need to attend a dress rehearsal on Monday, September 26th, 2011 from 5-6pm in Student Union room 335. Participants must have their talent picked out, as well as bring their outfits for the Plank Walk and evening wear portion to be approved. Failure to provide these items at dress rehearsal could result in disqualification.

Rules:1. Each organization will select one member to compete in the Buccaneer Gods competition.

2. Even though this is a fun and laid back event for the Greek community, we expect all contestants to remember to use their best judgment and remember they are representing not only their individual chapters, but the University of Akron’s Greek Life Community. Also, we expect them to have appropriate outfits when it comes to their attire for the talent and during the interview portion. If the committee deems anything inappropriate the night of the competition, it could result in disqualification.

3. Plank Walk (pirate costume) wear and all other event wear must be appropriate and has to be approved by the Greek Week Committee the night of dress rehearsal.

4. Each buccaneer should be prepared to answer impromptu questions which will be given by a member of the Greek Week Committee the night of dress rehearsal.

Event Scoring: This is an individual event and both Fraternity and Sorority winners will be chosen. The points awarded will go toward the team’s total points. Each winner will receive 25 points. Points will be given based off of attendance percentages as well.

Shipwreck Stroll-Off

Event Time and Date: Thursday, September 29, 2011, 7:30pm

Check In: 6:30pm for participants; 7:00pm for all other members

Event Location: Student Union Grand Ballrooms

Event Specifics: Working closely with the NPHC Chapters, teams will create a routine and have a stroll off competition. Points and the specifics of the All Greek Stroll Off are outlined in greater detail below.

Greek Week Stroll-Off Rules and Regulations

Qualifications

1. For each Greek Week Team there will be a Stroll-Off Team consisting of members from every chapter on the team.

2. Each Greek week sorority and fraternity stroll team must have at least 3 members and is allowed a max of 16 members.

3. Each Greek Week Stroll team must have a team captain from NPHC who will be the team’s main point of contact. Also, each organization within the stroll team must supply their point of contact and contact information.

4. Each Greek Week Team will be asked to submit the form at the end of this packet with the rest of the packet on the packet due date, Friday, September 9th, 2011 at 12pm.

Music

5. Music for the routine must be submitted by Friday, September 23 rd , 2011 at 12pm on a C.D. and must be clearly marked with the team’s name Attention: Katelin Getz to the CSL Administration Desk (Music will not be accepted after this deadline) No exceptions!

6. Any mixed music is the responsibility of the team members to create.7. Music and routine must be without profanity or any inappropriate reference/topics

Rehearsals

9. It is up to the stroll team to coordinate their own practice to prepare themselves for what they need for their performances.

10. There will be a mandatory rehearsal on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 6pm in SU 335. This is to ensure your performance is ready to go on stage as well as for it to be reviewed prior to the event.

11. The exact time of your teams rehearsal will be decided at the Greek Week Point of Contact meeting on Monday, September 19th, 2011. Each team will have a 15 minute time slot.

12. Failure to come to the mandatory rehearsal and perform the entire performance will result in disqualification from the event.

The Competition Rounds

13. Each Greek Stroll-Off team will have 3 minutes to perform a stroll together.14. You may pick any song you would like to stroll to.15. You will be judged upon the following:

a. Creativity 25ptsi. Judges are looking for creativity. This can be displayed in many ways

through props, a stroll concept/theme, dance moves, formation or wherever your teams see fit to display creativity. There is no need to build a set. Remember this is a stroll competition, not a step show.

b. Uniformity 15ptsi. Judges will be looking for the stroll line to remain a consistency of

unity and alikeness in stroll movements.c. Apparel 15pts

i. Judges are looking for the stroll line to be similar or carry some sort of theme in their apparel overall. This could be anything from costumes to crossing shirts to GLO shirts or some other creative concept.

d. Attitude 15ptsi. Judges are looking for the members of the stroll team to enjoy

themselves and the experience of strolling with their stroll line along with staying in character of the stroll itself.

e. Overall Appeal 30ptsi. Judges will be looking for the overall appeal and spirit of strolling and

the efforts of the stroll line.

The Day of

16. All members of each stroll team are expected to arrive at the Student Union Ballrooms no later than 6:30 pm. Failure to do so will disqualify your team from competition. If any of your members cannot arrive on time due to a reasonable excuses (work, class, etc.) They must notify their stroll team captain who will notify the Greek Week Co-Chairs.

17. Upon arrival, each participating team member should check in and receive a wristband to signify participation.

18. Any items the team will be using must be brought with the team at 6:30pm. 19. Each team will be provided a space to keep their belongings.

NPHC Stroll Rounds

20. NPHC will stroll three additional rounds prior to the unity stroll round. The round themes will be determined by NPHC at the first council meeting of the semester and provided to the NPHC chapters after that.

21. All Greek Week rules previously mentioned hold for this phase of the competition.22. NPHC is donating a $150 prize to the winning fraternity and sorority to be added to

their chapters General Operating Budget or donated to a cause of their choice in their name.

23. All NPHC organizations who wish to compete in the NPHC Stroll-Off must compete in the unity stroll in order to participate in the competition. As an additional incentive, NPHC organizations may win bonus points by placing in the Unity Stroll Round for their total scores. Scoring is as follows:

1st Place in Unity Stroll – 15 points2nd Place in Unity Stroll – 10 points3rd Place in Unity Stroll – 5 points

Scoring

1. Only the Unity Stroll with the Greek Week Teams will count for points in the total Greek Week Competition. Scoring is as follows:

Point Value1st = 75 points2nd = 50 points3rd = 25 points

Additionally, a bottom line point value of 25 points will be given out to every team if at least one person from every chapter in that team is present for this event. Then points will be given out to Greek Week Teams based on the percentage of people that show up to the event for that team:

Point Value for Attendance:50% = 25 points35% = 15 points25% = 5 points

A Successful Voyage

Event Time: Friday, September 30th, 2011, 4:30pm-7pm

Event Location: Phi Kappa Tau’s volleyball court, Delta Gamma’s parking lot, and the field between Delta Gamma, and Phi Delta Theta. Rain Location: Student Wellness and Recreation Center

Event Specifics: To celebrate the end of our Greek Week 2011, we will be having an all Greek social accompanied with volleyball and corn hole tournaments. Points will be awarded for attendance as well as the tournaments. Food will be provided!

Event Rules:

1.) Each member may only participate in one activity since there will be more than one activity going on at one time.

2.) The corn hole tournament will be double elimination. We will use regulation corn hole rules. Any bean bag thrown into the hole will earn three points; any bean bag landing on the board will earn 1 point. Each game will play to 21. At any time in the game your team goes over 21 points you will automatically drop down to 15 points.

3.) The volleyball tournament will be a single elimination. Each match will consist of three games to 15.

4.) All tournaments must contain male and female participants5.) Brackets will be made by the Greek Week Committee. Since there are 5

teams, the first place team will get a by-game to begin with.

Event Scoring: The first place team for each event will earn their team 100 points. If one member from every chapter from the team is in attendance, the team will receive an automatic 25 points. Attendance points will be awarded as follows:

Point Value50% = 75 points35% = 50 points25% = 25 points

Awards Ceremony

The Greek Week Awards Ceremony will begin immediately following the end of the volleyball and corn hole tournaments.

Pool Shark Tournament Rules

The Greek Week Pool Shark Tournament is a Non-Call format, which means the shooter only needs to identify the pocket he/she plans to make the eight ball in.

1. A scratch immediately following the break results in free placement of the cue ball, by the incoming player, behind the head-string. Incoming player in this case must shoot down table at targets fully past the head-string. Balls behind the head-string can legally be kicked. All other fouls or scratches result in cue ball in hand anywhere on the table for the incoming player.

2. Pocketing the 8-ball on the break is an automatic win.

3. First player to legally pocket a ball from a group has that group of balls.

A legal shot meets one of the following criteria:

Shooter calls a ball and pocket, then makes the ball called in the designated pocket, or

Shooter calls a ball and pocket, fails to make the ball but after contacting one of his group of balls, SOMETHING HITS A RAIL—without scratching.

4. Should any player pocket the eight ball before pocketing their other balls first, the 8-ball is SPOTTED ON THE FOOT SPOT, and the incoming player has ball-in-hand.

5. The eight ball is legally pocketed in turn by designating a pocket and having the eight ball fall in only that pocket regardless of the path the eight ball take to get there.

6. Fouls, resulting in loss of turn and ball in hand anywhere on the table, are as follows:

A. The shooter can touch the cue ball at rest only once per shot and only in the act of shooting. Should contact with the cue ball otherwise occur it is considered a foul.

B. NO JUMP SHOTS OR MASSE SHOTS PERMITTED. Should shooter perform such, it is a foul and results in ball-in-hand for the incoming player.

C. If, in the act of shooting, a player fails to make first contact with the group of balls that he has selected, it is a foul; and results in ball-in-hand.

E. The eight ball does not belong to either player at any time before his/her designated group of balls has been pocketed. Hence, the eight ball can never be

used as a neutral ball struck first for the purpose of carom or combination. Using the eight ball in stated fashion is considered to be a foul.

F. After contacting a designated object ball, contact with any rail, or the pocketing of the pre-determined object ball must also occur. Failure to have contact made with a rail by the cue ball or other ball after hitting an object ball is considered to be a foul, and ball-in-hand for the incoming shooter.

G. The act of shooting is not legal when the shooter has no part of their feet on the ground. At least part of one foot of the shooter must be in contact with the ground when the cue tip touches the cue ball or their turn is forfeited and they are charged with a foul.

H. Should the current shooter disturb balls other than the cue ball unintentionally, they may not return the disturbed ball(s) to their origin without consent from the opposing player. Failure to comply results in a foul.

7. ABSOLUTELY, NO COACHING is permitted. Ejection from the tournament will result if more than one warning is needed for compliance.

REFEREE

Referees for this tournament are elected by the Greek Week Committee members only. A referee can be called upon to make judgments of fouls before they occur. It is the responsibility of the non-shooting, opposing player to call upon a referee before a potential foul occurs, (i. e. split hits). The referee's call is final. In the absence of a referee, opposing players are on their honor as sportsmen.

SLOP

Balls pocketed by the shooter that go in a pocket always stay in the pocket. Should the shooter pocket their ball(s) intentionally or unintentionally, that player's inning will resume. Object balls other than the eight ball do not have to be pocketed in a designated or intended pocket. If a ball is pocketed and a foul occurs simultaneously, that ball stays in its pocket and the shooter is penalized accordingly.
