Vice-President Message:

As I write this I am getting ready for our District Annual Meeting in September at Wilkesboro UMC. I hope

everyone is planning on attending as we celebrate all the accomplishments for all the units in the Appalachian

District for 2014. We will recognize outgoing officers for their service and introduce you to next year’s

Appalachian District Team members. If you have not completed your Mission Today requirements, reading,

Gift to Mission, etc. for 2015 you still have time. I know many units take the summer off so when you start

your meetings back you can have an idea on what you want to complete by the end of November. Remember,

we would love to hear from you, even if it just to come say hello at one of your meetings. I am looking forward

to seeing you at District Annual Meeting on September 27th.

Peace be with you,

SOCIAL ACTION

Hello UMW Sisters,

As you know, we’ve been having a lot of discussion about domestic violence. Not only because it is one of our

key focuses as United Methodist Women, but also because it affects so many lives. I think it would be safe to

say that we all know someone who has been a victim of some form of domestic violence.

When we hear about domestic violence or domestic abuse we often think in terms of physical abuse but we

need to remember that psychological abuse is just as bad and in some cases worse than physical violence.

Psychological abuse, also known as mental or emotional abuse, can often be harder to detect because there are

no outward signs of mistreatment and therefore it may be more difficult for the victim to receive the care and

protection they need. This type of abuse can come in the form of verbal attacks or controlling and jealous

behavior. The abuser often uses threats to control the victim or isolates them from their friends and family. In

many cases victims of this type of abuse suffer from post-traumatic stress and require therapy in order to lead a

normal life. Because of the tremendous stress it places on the victim, they also are more likely to turn to

alcohol and drugs to cope. While the scars of abuse may not be visible, they are still there and last for years if

not for an entire lifetime.

I hope you will join us for our District Annual Meeting where our speaker will be from SAFE an organization in

Wilkes County that offers safety, empowerment, healing, and hope to their clients. They will be able to answer

any questions you may have about any form of domestic abuse and also where to find help.

Love One Another,

Kim Smith

Nominations

Dear Sisters in Christ,

Your Committee on Nominations is busy praying, calling and seeking willing and able sisters to serve for the

2016 and following years.

We have had some changes on the leadership team since our last newsletter. One is that we now have Wanda

Tillman as our Communications Coordinator. Thank you Wanda! Our secretary of Program Resources is now

Beverlee Scott. That position was vacant for a while. A big thank you to Beverlee.

Another change is that I am now serving in the position of Spiritual Growth. Anna Bottoms is now finishing

my year as Chair of Committee on Nominations.

We will make these interim changes official when we vote on our 2016 slate of officers

We need sisters to serve on the Nominations Committee for 2018 and 2019. This is a good way to enter into the

District Leadership Team and a very rewarding experience.

Still to be filled is the position of secretary.

Margo Bowman will be leaving as Membership Nurturing Outreach this year. She has kept us active and vital

in reaching out to our units. Thank you Margo!

Also, our president, Nancy Reigel, will leave at the end of the year. We will miss you Nancy! You have served

so willingly and we appreciate you.

As we seek leadership in our District, please consider the possibilities and gifts you possess. Perhaps this is

your next step in growing and serving. Thomas R. Steagald states in his book A House of Prayer (p 41),

"Whatever gifts the Holy Spirit gives to each, God intends for the benefit of all."

Please, call or email if you or someone you know would be willing to serve. Thank you!

Treasurer

Let us celebrate as we are having another great year as United Methodist Women. Our district Mission Study in

March and Prayer Breakfast in April and the Conference events, Spiritual Growth Retreat and Mission U,

remind us that we are living our Purpose of United Methodist Women. We are indeed a community of women

who share a creative, supportive fellowship; we are growing into whole persons in relation to God; and our

support of mission in Global ministries continues strong. Appalachian District's giving to mission at the end of

June 2015 is $34,000. What a difference every dollar makes in the life of women, children, and youth around

the world. As treasurers, part of our job is to encourage our members by continually lifting up our giving. We

can comment on one of the five channels of giving or the Legacy Fund in just a sentence or two when we give a

treasurer's report. I encourage you to remind your unit members that UMW lives out the miracle of the loaves

and fishes all the time. The smallest of gifts is appreciated and multiplied. We make such an incredible

difference in the lives of women and children. We want to keep that always at the center of our unit's activities.

As always please contact me in any way I can help you,

Program Resources

I am so excited to join the Appalachian District team as Secretary of Program Resources. My home church is

Sparta UMC located in the beautiful mountains of Alleghany County. I have been an avid participant in the

UMW Reading Program for the last four years. The wide-ranging scope of topics addressed by authors from all

walks of life have opened my eyes to social injustice, the joys and hardships of missionary life, opportunities to

care for our planet, and ways to enrich our spiritual lives.

The books on the 2015 reading list are stunners! Who cannot be touched by the dedication of Father Benigno

Beltran working with the poor and living in a Manila garbage dump in Faith and Struggle on Smokey

Mountain? And get an inside look at women’s collegiate sports in Sum It Up by Tennessee’s former basketball

head coach, Pat Summitt. There are so many more that I can recommend, but space is limited here.

Please remember, that you only need to read five books, from years 2011 thru 2015, one in each category, to

receive a Plan I Certificate of Recognition (or 10 books for Plan II) at the District Annual Meeting. The new

UMW Program Books and Prayer Calendars should be available at the Annual Meeting on September 27th

. I

invite all the units to bring your shopping lists and take these valuable resources back to your circles. Does

your circle have a Reading Program in place? If not, please contact me and let’s get your group started before

the end of the year. Read a book and share the experience with your UMW sisters.

Blessings to you,

Beverlee Scott

Historian

When has your Church been creating history this year? Has your UMW grown, stayed the same? Are you

finding new ways of welcoming new folks to Church and United Methodist Women?

It's often summer months that finds folks on the move. Might be across town or the miles. Watch for these

changes. Stop in with a plate of cookies and be bold about inviting them to Church, and UMW.

Remember that one doesn't have to be a Methodist or member of a local Church to be a UMW member.

A good neighbor helps folks find their way through the neighborhood. Might even be introducing them to a

babysitter so she can attend UMW meetings. By all means offer to pick her up.

Spiritual Growth

Greetings,

What a joyous time we had at the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska June 12-13! Love as God Loves

was wonderful, from the opening session on Friday evening, to the close on Saturday. The Reverend Toni Ruth

Smith gave us food for thought, and a challenge to love as God loves. A few of her words resonate in my being

as I go through my daily life on this faith journey..." Love like God's love is patient. The journey might be

more important than the destination. Be patient with yourself. The disciples spent 3 years with Jesus in the

flesh. Becoming takes a lifetime! Loving like God's love is the journey- not the destination!" As Spiritual

Growth leader, I am excited to serve on our Appalachian District and walk this faith journey with you. Being a

part of the leadership team has been a growing experience and very fulfilling! God leads us as we prepare to

make our UMW vital in the lives of God's people.

Mission u in July 16-19was a time of renewal and learning and sisterhood. This year, as we studied Created for

Happiness: Understanding Your Life in God , my prayer is that we all will bring with us an openness to receive

the blessings God has for us. Just by being together at Pfeiffer is a blessing. I challenge each of you who serves

as Spiritual Growth leader in your local unit to encourage and lift up each of your sisters in prayer. And for

those who attended Mission u, as we have gone back to our local churches and units, may we share with others

the blessings we receive

" Remember to pray without ceasing and to use the Prayer Calendar at all meetings. Spend time reading God's

Word and the UMW books on the Reading List." Peace!

Mission Education and Interpretation

Think Mission Today! I am once again asking your unit to become a Mission Today Unit. It is not too late to

begin working on the criteria if you have not already done so. If you need the list of criteria, go to the

Conference UMW website: www.wnccumw.org. Click on "Mission Resources" near the top and go down to

"Mission Today." You also may contact me and I will get a copy for you. You may ask: "Why should my unit

be a Mission Today Unit?" It means that your unit is doing the things that make you a healthy unit. It is sort of

like the old Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, or like a school that is accredited. It is an HONOR!

Use your Prayer Calendar! I again remind you that one item on the list, #14, states that members will

correspond with five persons listed in the Prayer Calendar at least once a year. To assist you with this, each

week I list the names and contact information from the Prayer Calendar on our Appalachian District Facebook

page which you may find by typing "Appalachian District UMW." Nancy posts these on our webpage as well:

www.appumw.com. We normally post them a week in advance for those of you who prefer to send cards rather

than e-mail.

A HUGE THANK YOU! Thanks to all of you who brought kits to our District Mission Study and Prayer

Breakfast! Also, Iverson Riddle Center thanks you for all the supplies that you brought for their residents!

We collected 101 Sewing Kits valued @ $18.00 = $ 1818; 38 Health Kits valued @ $12 = $456; 33 School Kits

valued @ $11 = $363; 3 Bedding Kits valued @ $50 = $150; Monetary donations = $493

TOTAL VALUE: $3280.00 WooHoo, Ladies!!

Hands-On for Annual Meeting!

See next page regarding Hands-On Missions for Conference Annual Meeting.

If you have kits to send to Annual Meeting and no one from your unit plans to attend, please contact me and we

will work out a way to get your supplies to the Lake.

You are also asked to bring Health Kits or Sewing Kits to our District Annual Meeting on Sunday, September

27 at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church. Participating in Hands-On Mission Opportunities will help your

local unit to meet Mission Today criteria #22. Go to UMCOR.org to get information regarding kit contents and

packing; click on "Relief Kits," or contact me for more information.

It is my desire to help you in any way that I can, so feel free to call on me at any time.

Annual Meeting is really Annual CELEBRATION!!

On Saturday morning we will be celebrating District Accomplishments..

Be ready to celebrate ...BRING NOISEMAKERS and join the celebration!!

Hands-On for WNCC Annual Meeting!

We hope you or someone from your unit plans to attend Annual Meeting at Lake Junaluska September 11-13.

Our Hands-On Mission Opportunity for the 2015 Annual Meeting will be:

Gift to Mission Cards and UMCOR Health Kits (hand towel, washcloth, comb, metal clippers/file, soap,

toothbrush, 6 bandages in gal plastic bag; $1 for toothpaste and $1 shipping on outside of box)

Encourage others in your local unit and congregation to participate...even if they cannot attend

Conference Annual Meeting.

Please be sure to carefully follow all instructions about items to include, and do not include anything extra.

Please do not put the money envelope inside of your UMCOR Relief kits. We need to collect those from you

separately.

Checks for shipping and donations should be made to: UMCOR - Sager Brown.

If you are bringing multiple kits, it is fine to just write one check in an amount sufficient to cover all of your

kits. If your whole unit is collecting the kits, it will be okay to collect the money and put it all in one envelope to

be turned in when you drop off your kits at Annual Meeting.

If at all possible, please pack your kits in a box that can be handled easily by our ladies and write the total

number of kits on the side of the box. (Paper case boxes are a nice size.) We are trying to make it as easy as

possible to collect, count and transport all of the kits.

Important Kit Assembly Information:

All items included in kits must be NEW items.

All relief kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict

rules often govern product entry into international countries, It is important that kits contain only the

requested items - nothing more.

Do NOT include any personal notes, money or additional materials in the kits. These things must

be painstakingly removed and will delay the shipment.

Please do not include any religious, political or patriotic notes or emblems in any kit.

Communications/Newsletter

Peace be with you each day,

As the new District communications coordinator, let me introduce myself. My name is Wanda Tillman. I am a

member of, and attend, South River UMC in Hiddenite and am a member of the Hiddenite UMC’s UMW, as

South River does not have a unit. As some of you may know I am not “from around here”, but have lived in NC

for the last 8 years. I volunteer at a Nursing Home and am involved in various projects at my two churches.

As we progress through the remainder of this year and into the next, I hope you will keep me informed as to

changes in people, officers, and addresses. Our Appalachian District covers a big and varied territory making

keeping in touch with one another a difficult task at times. That is what communications is about, staying

CONNECTED with one another. We are UNITED Methodist Women!

I look forward to a rich and mutually rewarding time of learning and growth!
