Christmas Cheer!Report by Lt Kathleen Pearce

The first Christmas as a Corps

    Officer is an exceptionally new

    and challenging experience!

Katherine and I wanted to jump

headlong into the season with as

much passion as we could! An

ecumenical Carols Service, several end of year Christmas

    parties, Christmas Cheer and of

    course the meeting on Christmas

    Day.

For us, the most adventurous part

    was Christmas Cheer, and the

    incredible Corps and community

    involvement surrounding it.

Neither of us have had a hugeamount of experience with the

    Christmas Cheer process, but we

had an idea... How do we think

    differently about what we might

do in order that people are

    uplifted, blessed, dignified

    and loved? How do we

    give presence, not just

    presents? How do we

    honestly and truly

    shine Gods light

    ...continued on page 2

    through our community

    interactions? What kind of

    conversations can we have

    about Christmas that bring

    people into a new understanding

    of its meaning?

    So... we gave away Chickens.

    Chickens?! you say! Arent

    chickens an Easter thing? Along

    with the more standard

    allocation of Coles vouchers,

toys and food items that we were

    able to distribute, we arranged

for each family to receive; 1) a

    frozen chicken from our local

    IGA, 2) a handmade Christmas

    decoration/finger puppet in the

    shape of a chicken 3) a

    certificate ...on your behalf a

family in the Caribbean has been

given a live chicken to support

    their family (JUSTGifts helped

us with this bit!). These and

    some other goodies were put

together in a nice gift bag for

    each family.

As well as that, we structured

the distribution days in a new

    and intentional way. We had

greeters at the door, coffee and

    tea served, and biscuits and

    snacks available. Individuals and

families were able to take a break

and rest while the bits and pieceswere put together specifically for

them. And, we were able to offer

free gift wrapping for the toys

    which most people received with

    delight!

    Overwhelmingly there was a

    peaceful awareness of the

presence of God in our midst. A

    young women commented, I

really dont want to leave, its so

    peaceful here. Another

    mentioned how much she liked

    having the opportunity to show

her kids how they had helped afamily overseas with the gift of a

chicken. A few of the volunteers

mentioned how glad they were to

be able to be involved in the

    process, which was busy, but

    beautiful.

    Katherine and I were completely

    overwhelmed to the point of

tears by the generosity of the

    community and the corps during

this period. We didnt ask God for

the things He so willingly gave

    us. Blessing upon blessing. What

a privilege we have to be a

conduit of Gods love, and thecommunitys generosity. We can

only be the ones to prepare the

way for God to do His thing in our

    midst. Praise His Holy Name.

    The Christmas Spirit in Ulverstone!

    Am I a finger puppet?Or am I a Christmas

    decoration?!
